Lack of Replies

Hi,
I've asked a number of questions over the last few months, but have received no even the most brief of replies. If the problem cannot be sollved, or if it would be best for my to go to a Mac dealer, then I'd appreciate someone having the manners to tell me. It would take seconds of your time.
For anyone who can help, here was my previous unanswered post of this morning:
"Can anyone help with my Macbook air's Mail, which seems to have frozen? I've tried force quits, switched the computer off numerous times, restarts etc., all to no avail. Would be great if someone had an answer to it or it looks like i';ll have to take it back to the shop."
Thanks a lot.

You’ve run into the main problem with user forums. Since we aren’t trained Mac mechanics and no one from Apple reads or posts to these forums except as users, you’ve got to hope that someone reads your post who has had the exact same problem as yours and has found a solution for the problem.

  • Lack of replies in this section

I'm some of you thread authors are noticing that you are getting no or very few replies from other people in the forum. I'm bringing to your attention that you are not giving enough information when you post a problem.
I refer you to Rules of the Forum by Bas (read section on what information to give)
EDIT: One other thing   If you post then please don't forget about your thread as I have noticed that no one really does much following up on threads round here. Because this section isn't getting much posting I'm going to make sure we have no threads with 0 replies.
Hope you find your answers guys- edit posts and give more info where appropriate

  • Mail 2.1 goes to wrong IMAP directory, creates multiple connections

My Mail 2.1 woes continue using IMAP accounts on a FREEBSD virtual server.
I have 2 IMAP accounts and should be logged onto the server once for each account. My server people checked and told me I was logged on 10 times for 1 account and 7 for another. In all instances I was not in the Mail directory but in the root directory. Furthermore, my server people watched as I restarted mail and while I initially get to the Mail directory, I then move to the root directory.
I tried adding "Mail" to the IMAP path spot. That didn't work, and caused my other IMAP account to go offline and stay offline.
Last night I had connection problems when sending an e-mail and got a message that there were no outbound mail servers set up. So I set up the 2 IMAP mail servers and then things worked, then Mail program didn't work, and when I checked the outbound mail server list, the old missing servers were back on the list along with the new servers.
I also checked, and some of my local storage files and directories are now listed as being on the server as local storage. Very weird.
To make this all work going forward, I need to be able to get Mail 2.1 to go to the Mail directory on the server. I tried putting "Mail" in the IMAP path, but then it was looking for ~/Mail/Mail instead of ~/Mail.
Any ideas on how to get Mail to go to and stay in the Mail directory on my IMAP server?

I fixed the problem by dumping Mail and switching to Thunderbird 2.0.0.9. All problems solved. Thunderbird has much better control over what happens between client and an IMAP server. (Probably a bad thing in an institutional setting.) Unfortunately, in other aspects, Mail is better than Thunderbird, particularly in junk mail screening. While there may have been away to get the latest version of Mail to work with my IMAP server, nobody seems to know including the Apple Store Genius and, by lack of replies on this board, most people in the know on these things.

  • ITunes insists on rearranging my iPad apps, even with 'Sync apps' unchecked

Here's an issue which I've noticed crop up on a few other forums, but which there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer for.  I'm hoping that one of the veterens on this forum might have come across it and figured out a fix...
Since iCloud launched, I've not had any need to use iTunes for any app, music, video, podcast or book syncing. I have automatic downloading enabled on both my iPad and iPhone, and that's worked very well.  Download something on one device, and it appears on the other. Wireless backup to iCloud too. All good.
There's just one thing I do still rely on iTunes for - and that's syncing photo albums and events created on my Mac in iPhoto to my iPad.  I'm hopeful that at some point Apple will enable iCloud syncing for iPhoto albums (especially seeing as iPhoto is now available for iOS), but for now I'm stuck with using iTunes to move new albums and events to my iPad.
Here's the thing. Given I have automatic iCloud downloading enabled for pretty much everything, I have the following sync options turned off in iTunes:
    Info
    Apps
    Tones
    Music
    Movies
    TV Shows
    Podcasts
    Books
The only item that is checked is Photos.
So once I'm ready to sync a newly created iPhoto album or event to my iPad, I fire up iTunes, select my iPad in the devices list, make sure that the new album/event is checked under the Photos tab, make absolutely sure all other sync options are unchecked, then I hit the sync button.
And about half the time, this will go well.  And the other half... well, disaster. iTunes will decide that it doesn't like my iPad apps arranged in the order I have them, and will rip them from their folders and scatter them across a ton of homescreens. The result is about an hours worth of work to get them all back in place again, just so I can enjoy having my latest photo album on my iPad.
I can't figure out why this happens.  When I have app syncing unchecked, I'm specifically telling iTunes to leave my apps well alone.  I have no interest in syncing apps to/from iTunes and my iPad. iCloud takes care of this for me now, and I have no reason to even have a copy of an app on my Mac. I can't do anything with it once it's on there.
Has anyone come up against this issue and found a fix?
Alternatively, and perhaps preferably, is there another way to move albums and events created in iPhoto to my iPad, without using iTunes? I know iTunes wants to be the be-all-and-end-all of syncing beasts, but now I have iCloud I have no use for it aside from photo syncing.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help here!

I'm starting to think that the lack of replies is due to the fact that nobody actually knows why this behaviour is, including Apple themselves.

  • Save automatic vendor payment run reference in clearing account assignment

    Hi,
When executing an automatic vendor payment run, the run is identified with two fields:
    - Run date
    - Identification
When the payments are posted, the vendors are cleared and an offsetting entry is posted onto the respective clearing account for each vendor. So if there is 100 vendors in the payment run, there will be 100 line items on the clearing account.
When multiple payment runs are made on the same day, it is hard to separate the line items for each payment run, during the banking process. Each payment run appears with it's total payment amount on the bank statement and should be cleared against the corresponding line items on the clearing account and that's where it becomes hard to easily select the line items that add up to the payment amount.
Unless of course, the assignment field on the clearing account would hold the run date and identification of the payment run.
Has anybody encountered the same business scenario and found a solution for it?

  • Create custom dictionary viewer

    Hello there!
I've got a digital version of a very old but very good German-Latin dictionary (maybe German users know Digitale Bibliothek), however the GUI which I have to wrap in wine is absolutely not KISS and it doesn't fit into my workflow in a tiling wm. I just discovered that I can export the whole dictionary into different formats notably XHTML, which should make it possible to create a more user friendly interface.
    The situation is as follows:

Note how the id of the anchor tags correspond to the lemmata (the uppercase letter after the # may be ignored, it indicates the language or section of the lemma in the original binary file).
In a quick-n-dirty approach I hacked a bash script (I am a bloody beginner) making use of dmenu and lynx:
    #!/bin/bash
    # display dmenu with all the lemmata, strip the id's (lemmatas in the file "data/lemmata")
    lemma="$(cat data/lemmata | sed -e 's/#[A-Z][0-9]*$//g' | dmenu)"
    # search for the selected lemmata to get the whole string with the id
    str="$(grep "^${lemma}[ .0-9()]*#[A-Z][0-9]*$" "data/lemmata")"
    id="${str#*\#[A-Z]}"
    # finally take the definition from the xml and pipe output to lynx
    awk "/<a id=\"p0*${id}\" \/>/,/<div class=\"db5PageBreak\">/{if (!/<div class=\"db5PageBreak\">/)print}" < data/dictionary.xml | lynx -stdin
The script fires up dmenu which displays all the lemmata with all the identifiers (#<number>) stripped, then it searches the selected lemma in the lemmata file again to find the identifier and finally then the corresponding paragraph(s) is (are) taken and piped to lynx. (Using the tee program I could bind the script to a keybinding and open/close a terminal window displaying lynx)
However this is not robust -  there are identical Latin and German lemmata:
    ab#B43
    ab#C60601
So the approach above must fail because I don't pipe the identifiers to dmenu. I could alter the list which gets piped to dmenu to
    ab [de]
    ab [lat]
and could then get back to the identifier...
But the longterm goal would be a more suitable custom console interface: I am thinking of
a terminal window which is divided into two parts, the left showing the lemmata, the right showing the definition of the lemma currently selected (think of something like a console music player, e.g. moc)
possibility of an on the fly dmenu-like search of the lemmata while typing
for the viewer part: automatical wrapping of the lines, colored text for <strong> and <em> tags, stripping of the HTML, scrolling (a lemma definition/translation may be very long) and display of UTF-8
I tend to hack this in C as I lack the knowledge of any other language (as an emacs user I also thought of using emacs and displaying the definitions in w3m but I don't know any lisp other then setting variables...).
    So my questions are:
Is this doable? If yes, which libraries should I consider? (ncurses, libhtml....)
Does anyone know a program which does something similar?
So far this would be my first program which makes use of menues, so any suggestions are very welcome! Any other ideas how to access lemmata and their definitions in a simple manner?

As you may have seen from the lack of replies, this is a bit hard to advise on.  Things that occur to me:
Rather than a library, you could use regular expressions for parsing, as you already did with awk.  They are available in C via POSIX functions, see the regex (3) manual page.
If all input you need is a decision between a small number of duplicate words, curses seems overkill.  Why not print all of them?  If you want more interaction, using curses is probably the right thing.
Personally I would probably use Perl for this task, which is the most productive programming language I know and is especially suited for text processing.  Seeing the rather advanced shell script you wrote (definitely more than beginner level), you may like it, as it was inspired by the shell scripts using sed, awk and the like.

  • In ical 7 cannot double click on an event, hover and then see details...

... which I used to be able to do before upgrading.Any ideas? Thanks.

Ok, due to lack of replies, I'll rephrase this and maybe someone can help. Previously, when viewing my Ical calender here on my Macbook Pro, if I single clicked on an event then hovered over it, the view would expand to show the entire details of the event, rather than the truncated version. This seems to have dispperaed, so in order to view the 'full' event, I have to edit then copy, or 'pull' the evnt down...

  • Left-click on firefox icon in taskbar shows a list of all tabs. how to just open to last tab?

I use the tab grouping feature a lot. That means I have 100s of tabs open at any one time.
The problem: once one switch between tab groups, the Firefox icon on the taskbar changes to what looks like multiple echoes of the Firefox icon. I guess it is supposed to represent multiple tab groups.
Before Firefox 20 one could click on the Firefox icon on the taskbar, and Firefox would come up and show the last tab I have been working on.
Since Firefox 20 a left-click on the Firefox icon on the taskbar now shows a tab list of 28+ seemingly random tabs. Many of them just says "Mozilla Firefox" instead of the website represented by that tab (because the tab was not accessed recently).
To open Firefox to the last tab I have been working on is now a real chore. I now have to pick one of these 28+ tabs (which is 99% of the time the wrong tab), then switch to the correct tab group, and then find the tab I have been working on. It typically takes 5-10 clicks to get back to where I was before I minimized Firefox, or before Firefox lost the focus. (In the past I could simply click on the Firefox icon on the taskbar, and Firefox restored where I last left off.)
How can I turn off the tab list that pops up when one left-click or hover the mouse over the Firefox icon on the taskbar? I would love to get the ability to minimize/restore Firefox back by clicking on the Firefox icon on the taskbar as it was in the past, not get a choice of random tabs.

Okay, with a lack of replies here, here are some solutions I came up with:
    * Quit Firefox and restart it. It reduces the number of clicks to just two. It is even faster than wading through the list of tab groups and tabs to get back to the last tab I was working on.
    * Use Alt-Tab to switch between applications instead of clicking on the Firefox icon on the taskbar. I'll have to change my habits, as I'm used to clicking on the icon to toggle between applications, especially if one has many applications open. I typically have a dozen applications open at any time, and Alt-Tabbing through them all can be time-consuming.
    * I found nothing that seems related in the about:config screens, e.g. an option to turn off tab.list
    * Switch to Chrome.
Anyone got better ideas or solutions?

  • Have I made a huge mistake ordering this??

I'm hoping there are a whole host of people who have ordered and had installed Infinity and get something like the service that is promised.. yet all I seem to be able to find here are people complaining about things, and a lack of replies from BT offering any explanations.
I've just ordered Option 2.. and the order has gone through and will move my line and broadband from O2 all on the same day (15th Feb).  I've read the stories of no one turning up, and I know people at work who've been given the run around as well, so now I am wondering if I've made a huge mistake in my desire to have anything like the suggested speeds that I can get (38Mb Down/10Mb Up).  The cabinet is about 100yrds from my house, so would hope to get at least half of that.
Anyone out there who can maybe say things MIGHT go well?

    Hi Matt.
Probably 99.999% of Infinity customers have had the service promised, but as they have not had any problem they have had no need to come here and complain.
All forums have people complaining about things, that is the nature of forums(to aid people into sorting out problems)
As for the speeds, remember they could be going up soon, and as you are only 100yds away from the cabinet you should actually get more than the 38Mb they say. They normally err on the cautious side.

  • How to Get Help Quickly

This is a user-to-user forum. Unless you see EMPLOYEE under a screen name, you should assume the poster is an upaid volunteer. Everyone's time is valuable, including yours. The following tips will help you get answers more quickly:
    DO
Check the Dreamweaver FAQ. The answer to your question might already be there.
Give your post a meaningful subject line, indicating of the nature of the problem.
Give sufficient details (such as operating system, browser, hardware platform, and other relevant information) for others to understand the nature of the problem, but don't go overboard. Short, focused questions tend to get answered more quickly.
If your problem concerns a web page that doesn't display as expected, upload the page to a public website and give the URL. But don't post links to anything you don't want indexed by a search engine. Create a test folder on the site, and remove the page when the problem has been solved.
Give details of any error messages.
Say briefly what you have done to try to solve the problem yourself.
If your question involves a database or server-side technology, such as PHP, ColdFusion, or ASP, say which one, and include it in the subject line.
    DON'T
Don't post a series of questions in a single post. Splitting them into separate threads increases your chances of a quick answer.
Don't repeat the same question in different forums, as this makes it harder for both you and those trying to help you to keep track of progress. Duplicate posts will be deleted.
When someone has answered your question, don't start asking more questions in the same thread. Keeping threads separate with clear subject lines makes it easier for others who might have the same problem to find the information they need.
Don't be impatient. If you don't get an answer in 24 hours, post a follow-up question in the same thread, asking if you need to give more details. The lack of replies might also indicate that no one else knows the answer.\
Don't hijack existing topics by replying with unrelated questions or suggestions. Start a new discussion thread so your question stands out.
When your question has been answered
If you started the thread, buttons like those in the following screenshot will appear at the bottom of each reply. Use these buttons to indicate that you have been helped or that you have received a satisfactory answer. You can choose up to two answers as "helpful" and one as "correct". Once selected, you cannot change your mind. Marking answers like this helps others identify solutions to their own problems.

  • This has to be something simple

I'm trying to get to the point where I can develop JSR-168 portlets. I'm using JDeveloper 10.1.2 and the portlet wizard. I've created a simple Hello World portlet. I've also downloaded the pre-seeded OC4J, which is what I'm deploying to (if there's a better way--i.e., if I can use the oc4J that comes with JDeveloper, please let me know).
Deploying works fine. I'm having trouble, however, registering my local provider with our portal server. I get through the wizard as far as step 3 of 3, where it tells me:
There are no registration properties required by the provider for registration.
At this point, I get a message on my local pre-seeded oc4j which says:
07/01/24 10:47:19 Warning a client is using a different version of the ormi prot
    ocol 1.0 != 1.1
This tells me that our portal has indeed contacted my local provider. I don't know if the warning issued means anything, though. If I click the finish button on the wizard, I then get the following error:
    Error
An error occurred when attempting to call the providers register function. (WWC-43134)
An error occurred during the call to the WSRP Provider: Java stack trace from root exception:

    at oracle.webdb.wsrp.client.design.v1.OraWSRP_v1_Registration_PortType.register(Unknown Source)
    . (WWC-43273)
I've looked up both of those WWC errors, but they don't give me anything to go on (the first one is an error when attempting to call the provider's register function, and the second is an error occurred when getting the service description).
I'm reading all about people developing and deploying JSR-168 portlets using JDeveloper and Oracle portal, so this has to be a problem that people have overcome. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Okay; I figured this one out. I needed to create the database table mentioned in the Portal Developers' Guide. So much for "simply download, extract, and start OC4J." I can now register my portlet provider, and I can run a simple Hello World portlet from my local container on our portal server.
Now I'm trying to figure out how to debug a portlet (i.e., step through the code). If I try to remotely attach to the container running my portlet, JDeveloper can never find the container.
Because of the lack of replies to these posts, I have to wonder, is anybody else doing this? Is there anybody out there who can help me get up and running?
    Thanks!

  • 3.6.13 won't open

I was surfing last night when I got a notice that 3.6.13 was available. Naturally, I downloaded right away. During the download, I was asked if I was sure I wanted to continue, because the source couldn't be verified. I continued, I never suspected Mozilla had been hacked, or anything.
After the install, there was some sort of problem which I can't recall. So, I tried to re-install, but was told that the file was corrupt. I un-installed FF, downloaded again using IE. Everything seemed fine.
Every two weeks, I do a boot-time scan with the free Avast! AV. I set it in motion & wnet to bed. This morning, I saw the scan found nothing, but FF wouldn't open. No matter what I did, nothing happened. At all, no motion, or mention from the Task Manager.
I did some poking around here, I set my firewall to allow FF. (I never had to do it before.) I don't know what else I can do.
It seems with the last three releases, it's been harder & harder to get things running smoothly again. Now, I have nothing & I'm forced to use IE! What's the problem?
Thanks in advance for any help!
    Mike.

Well Mikes_FF I've been reading around for a solution and since you say you solved it yourself it would have been nice if you'd told us how.

I moved on from here and found another blog where a clue was posted:
Uninstall and then re-install to c/program/firefox instead of c/program/mozilla firefox.
Unfortunately, the Fire fox installer insists on installing to folder c/programs/mozilla firefox so I simply renamed the folder and that seems to have worked.

  • Canon PIXMA MP140 Scanner not working in Windows 7

I have been having problems in getting the Scanner function to work properly in Windows 7. This is the message I receive everytime I try to scan or preview a scan in Windows 7:
    Cannot communicate with scanner.
Cable may be disconnected or scanner may be turned off. Check status.
    Scanner driver will be closed.
I have installed the latest drivers from the Canon Support website. I have even tried installing the latest Windows XP driver in Windows 7 with no effect. I have also tried using a different USB Cable and connected the USB Cable to a different USB Port on my Computer with no luck.
The Scanner works fine in WIndows XP SP3. I upgraded my Computer to Windows 7 SP1 and now have a problem with the Scanner.
Any ideas? It is supposed to work in Windows 7 I've checked the Canon and the Microsoft website which both say that its compatibie.

This printer/scanner is NOT compatible with Windows 7 32-bit.
I tried installing the latest MP Driver v1.06 and the MP Navigator 3.1 software in Windows XP compatibility mode and Windows Vista compatibility mode.
I even tried using the MP Driver v1.00 and MP Navigator 3.1 software (provided on the CD-ROM that came supplied with the printer) in Windows XP compatibility mode and Windows Vista compatibility mode.
I only had slight success with the MP Driver v1.00 which comes supplied on the CD-ROM with the printer.
When I installed this driver in Windows XP compatibility mode, it wouldn’t scan in MP Navigator 3.1 at all but in Windows Fax and Scan it would let me preview a scan then complete a full scan. But would then refuse to preview or scan anything else after that unless I turned the printer on and off and restart the computer.
This is obviously a driver compatibility problem with Windows 7.
I’m amazed at how Canon has tried to pass this printer/scanner off as being compatible with Windows 7 when it clearly isn’t. I know it works with Windows 7 64-bit but lets face it most people are using 32-bit systems not 64-bit.
It looks like there hasn’t been any proper testing done by Canon. Its poor form from Canon and the lack of replies in this thread is deafening. Seeing as this is the official Canon forum I was hoping there would be at least 1 or 2 replies saying try this and try that but I’ve tried everything there is to try at my end and I’m at a loss at what to try next.
I won’t be buying any Canon products in the future because of the poor after sales service and outright lies about compatibility of one of their products with newer Operating Systems. My next Printer/Scanner/Copier all in one will be an Epson or a HP.

  • Install Flash Builder 4.5.x Upgrade without Flex Builder 3.x installed?

Edit: Is the lack of replies because no one knows the answer or because this was a ridiculously dumb question?
Also, if I must have a prior version physically installed to do the upgrade, can I install Flex Builder 3 on a temp Windows machine, upgrade that to Flash Builder 4.5.x and then transfer the license to the MacBook? Seems like a very convoluted way of doing things but if that's the only way then I suppose I can go scrounge up a spare computer to do so. End Edit
    Hi,
I just got a brand new MacBook Air which has Lion on it.
I have an unused boxed copy of Flex Builder 3.0 standard edition.
I tried to install 3.0 and of course I got an error along the lines of not compatible.
What I would like to do is upgrade to Flash Builder 4.5.
    So the question is,
Can I buy the upgrade edition of Flash Builder 4.5 standard for Mac, then install that on my MacBook even if I don't have 3.0 installed to upgrade from?
Is it as simple of just supplying the seriel number from 3.0 when upgrading?
    Thanks.

Changed the title to better reflect the situation.
Also added a blurb to the top.

Well, thought I should update just in case someone else has a similar thought.
I ran out of time to wait and it seemed I wasn't going to get a response so took the chance and bought the upgrade.
The install couldn't find any prior versions so just asked for the serial for Flex Builder 3.0.
After entering that in, it thankfully installed just fine.
Would have totally sucked if it didn't work and was forced to then buy the full version.
    Anyhow, relieved it worked.
    Regards.

  • VGA Monitor Mirroring

Greetings---I have a external monitor that pivots into portrait mode & via a VGA connection using a mirroring-enabled drawing app (Sketchbook Pro) to sketch....
The problem is although the iPad in portrait or 'tall' mode, i can't get this to reflect on the external monitor. The image remains fixed in horizontal or in landscape mode. Turning the iPad landscape-wise causes the image to become portrait as desired but alas i can't draw what I'm needing to draw at that angle...
Anyone know how to fix this---hopefully?
    Thanks!

From the lack of replies, apparently not a unresolvable ish at the moment. Hopefully Apple with fix this aspect of things with a future update....
Anyhow i did come up with a work-around (working with the iPad is nothing but 'work-arounds' i've come to learn ), maybe a obvious one to most out there; Lock the iPad's screen into place.
Yeah it does do the trick but is hardly a solution since the tools, drop down windows, etc. of the app now need to be read at a side angle which definitely puts a crimp where functionality is concerned...
