Lack of Usability and Ergonomy

We are a small research unit at the University of Oxford, and we normally keep all our various machines up-to-date. So we  tried to move our Macs to Lion as it became available. After an unprecedented number of complaints and a massive loss of data due to a new feature, we are for the first time reverting back to an older operating system and also make every attempt possible to downgrade the new machines that we recently purchased. As these drastic counter-measures imply a massive loss of time and money, we did not do so light-heartedly. Hence prior to switching to 10.7 inadvertedly, anybody working in a productive environment relying on a usable and suffently ergonomic IT infrastructure should therefore consider the below list of the manifold reasons that triggered our decision:
It became nearly impossible to work with large documents (text, tables, figures, illustrations, large plans etc ...): Many applications require a fine-pitch control in the horizontal and vertical position of the documents displayed. This is normally done by means of the scroll arrows in a unified and ergonomic way. This is no more possible! Using the arrow keys, trackpads or other methods (which differ from one application to the other) is no viable alternative, as this is often very inergonomic (requiring two hands, taking the hand off the mouse, doing  acrobatic finger exercises or jumping by whole pages). Even reading a long text document by simply placing the mouse on the "down arrow" and then clicking down line by line is no more possible.
The automatic document handling might lead to data loss and/or poor performance: We require full control of what documents are being saved, the locations of where they go to, when this happens and also what names the documents have. For instance, when making changes to a document, an essential requirement is that the machine must be able of saving it under a different name at the request of the user. This has been eliminated (no more choice to  "save as" a different file). Moreover, the new autosave feature might overwrite the old version of a document albeit this is not desired, and also slow down the machine when sweeping in at the wrong moment. In connection with the new autosave feature, our usual practice of editing and re-arranging documents to then store them as new files has already caused various unwanted data losses.
Presentations cannot be shown as they play on the wrong screen: The full screen mode now switches automatically to the internal screen, and also seems to render secondary screens unusable. So while keynote still seems ok for presentations on external screens, this has become tricky with most other applications. For instance, any pre-recorded material from DVD's now plays internally.
Working with many documents and applications became very complicated: The way Expose and Spaces worked prior to Lion allowed one to move the mouse in a corner to see miniatures of *all* open Windows, and to immediately click the desired one to come upfront. Now windows belonging to the same application appear stacked, and finding the right window is sometimes very painful (in particular if one does not know which application deals with the desired document).
The lack of an install DVD is too risky: We have to replace 2-3 harddisks per year, and often enough these are total failures. In such a case, having no way of restoring the system other than via the (unreliable) internet is not acceptable. For security reasons, some of your machines are not even connected to the web, and we need a way of restoring them without any connection to the outside world.
The servicability has suffered: Having different versions of operating systems is always a pain when one has to keep a large number of machines up-to-date. We have a large number of first-generation Intel machines that are still perfect for office use, and we'll keep them for some more years. Those machines cannot be upgraded to Lion - i.e. we would have to deal with two different system installations.
In view of the above, we are back to 10.6.8.  We hope that Apple is going to revise some of the decisions and give us back the functionallity and ease-of-use that we had in the past.

  • JDeveloper, ADF, lack of support and bleak future

    Hi,
I'm a seasoned Java and .NET developer, used to many environments and frameworks. A happy user of Oracle databases.
For a very Oracle oriented client I started with a team of developer a project using JDeveloper (no choice). After 4 months of using JDeveloper, ADF to build web sites, here are some thoughts I would like to share. This remarks only focus on that products, because I have a lot of respect for the Oracle databases and had a lot of success with them.
I am starting to get depressed about the very few blogs (most from Oracle) talking about JDeveloper and ADF, the lack of books, and the Oracle forums.
Moreover, most of the time you never get an answer to your problems, sometimes untested not working 'solutions', and a very very few times a working solution. Help is sparse, the community is missing.
If Oracle wants to promote its framework, it has to boost the number of tutorials, examples and support.
Googling about ADF is most of the time a non sense since you always land on the same 3 blogs and the Oracle forums.
Proof of non use by the community ?
If you try on www.indeed.com to find statistics about JDeveloper or ADF jobs you get another frightening proof.
Sometimes you find a piece of code or a tutorial that may help, but you realize it works only on some specific release of JDeveloper.
What makes me angry is when you ask why your code works on the x.x.x.x version but not the newest version, and the only answer you get is stay with x.x.x.x version (I won't bother to fix your 10 lines or code or even give you a direction to do it (maybe coz I don't understand myself were the breaking changes are)).
JDeveloper is damn too slow ? You should have a dual-core and at least 2 Go of memory, you poor thing ! Is Java for rich people ?
Debuging is a nightmare. Compared to Eclipse or others it is not practical at all.
I'm happy when I can create a few pages drag and dropping controls. Business components are also a good thing. It speeds up my development. But since development is not just UI and generating business components, I lose a lot of time every time I want to write code, every time I do something "exotic" it becomes a pain in the ass.
My problem here is that the architecture and JDeveloper constraint the developer a lot. I don't even talk about the fact that everything is only Oracle database oriented (openess ?). Even changing your page layout is a pain. Positioning controls is non trivial. As a whole, I would say that this whole thing imposes you to adapt to it, it doesn't adapt to you and your way of working.
Most results I saw look like the Oracle websites.
I could go on about the various bugs and problems that plague JDeveloper. Like the refactoring (when usable) that leave old and annoying stuff in your model XML, like the bugs in the diagrams, like problems related to auto-binding on the page and manually changing controls ID, various synchronization problems between pages and backing beans, adding upload is a mess, OrdDomain types are buggy, regions doesn't work well in the designer, and so on...
My point is that I feel the whole thing is not mature. And Oracle seems to fix some issues with the release of JHeadStart. Sometimes you fix things by integrating JHeadStart stuff. JHeadStart is probably a great thing and a time saver if you don't do too much "exotic" screens and code, but does it means that JDeveloper+ADF and classic development becomes a second class citizen ?
This is sad, since the ADF framework and JDeveloper look good and are worth of a more widespread usage. But marketing and support are way way far behind other commercial and open-source solutions. When I see what is planned for JDeveloper 11 and I compare it to others (Java or not). When I look at the developers needs and expectations, I feel we are losing the race.
Maybe Oracle would like to hand over some of the framework to the community, but my feeling is that the community is already commited on other exciting and less constraining frameworks and tool, and this community may well work in a way that doesn't fit Oracle vision. Future will tell.
    Cheers.

    Hi,
thanks for the detailed comment. I appreciate the time you spent writing this up as this helps to improve the product. Below is a first - quick and brief response to some of your statements.
    ... for documentation and tutorials

Especially the ADF Developer Guide for 4 GL developers earns a lot of praise among J2EE developers.

    ... for books

Of course samples need to be created to some point in time with a specific version. We have SRDemo as our main - maintained - reference demo I suggest you download this sample from OTN using help--> check for updates. Note that SRDemo contains code solutions for most developer cases and also is available in 10.1.3.1

But since development is not just UI and generating business components, I lose a lot of time every time I want to write code, every time I do something "exotic" it becomes a pain in the ***.
What is exotic, and what are the questions you didn't get an answer for ? I see that this is your first posting on OTN, so I am wondering under which account you posted the other questions that did not get an answer.
Googling about ADF is most of the time a non sense since you always land on the same 3 blogs and the Oracle forums. Proof of non use by the community ?
Isn't OTN a community ? I don't think that we need another discussion forum and looking at OTN it appears very active.
I don't even talk about the fact that everything is only Oracle database oriented (openess ?).
Not true. Please prove your claim.
Even changing your page layout is a pain. Positioning controls is non trivial. As a whole, I would say that this whole thing imposes you to adapt to it, it doesn't adapt to you and your way of working. Most results I saw look like the Oracle websites.
Now you are barking up the wrong tree, blaming ADF for what is JavaServer Faces layouting. You don't have to use JSF but can go for JSP /Struts and/or Swing development. What is the view layer technology of your choice that allows you to do better layouting ?
I could go on about the various bugs and problems that plague JDeveloper
    Yes, please post them all
... regions doesn't work well in the designer, and so on...
Of course, because regions are not officially supported. JDeveloper 11 - I know you don't want to hear future - will have full templating (going far beyound of what facelets do) and region support
My point is that I feel the whole thing is not mature. And Oracle seems to fix some issues with the release of JHeadStart.
JHeadstart is a consulting offering and not meant to fix the product.
... but does it means that JDeveloper+ADF and classic development becomes a second class citizen ?
No comment for this statement as it is based on a wrong observation
This is sad, since the ADF framework and JDeveloper look good and are worth of a more widespread usage. But marketing and support are way way far behind other commercial and open-source solutions. When I see what is planned for JDeveloper 11 and I compare it to others (Java or not).
Note that only a fraction of new features in JDeveloper 11 leaked out so far or have been mentioned in the recent statement of direction. JDeveloper has many more features that we don't yet promote because the software isn't available.
Please note that we give ADF to the community. Its just we are not giving it to the open soutce community but the J2EE community (JSR-227)

  • The lack of details and customer service.

After less than one month of ownership, my Ideapad K1 power button broke. After talking to a customer service rep (K). She informed me it will have to be returned to Lenovo for repair, which will take about 7 to 10 business days from time of delivery. I asked to speak to a supervisor at which point she puts me on hold and then comes back on the line to tell me the supervisor stated the same thing. At no point did I ask her to confirm this with the supervisor. I asked again to speak to her supervisor, to which she puts me on hold again. The supervisor (R) comes on the line to tell me that the Ideapad K1 will have to be returned for repair. He then transfers me back to K to finalize the return, to which she now informs me I will have to pay for shipping. This is very poor customer service in my view. I will never buy another Lenovo product as long as I live and would advise every one I meet not to buy one either. I was looking at their high end laptops for my corporate deployment, its a shame. Maybe I will be going with DELL as they will send a Tech to my house to perform repairs.   I do hope that all customer calls are recorded as I believe someone needs to listen to the lack of professionalism and customer service that both K and R display.

  • Customer Service Miscommunication and a large lack of communication and follow through

I seem to be having a lot of difficulty with Verizon Wireless Customer Service the last few months and am becoming increasingly frustrated. Let me start by saying I have been with Verizon for years, my wife, kids, and in laws all have Verizon, and my Father and Step mother are soon making a decision to move their service over from AT&T.  I may tell them to think again about that.
October to 2012 we bought my step daughter a basic phone.  She has had a number of problems with it.  It doesn't hold a charge, it restarts or shuts down randomly. They sent her a replacement, and that phone had the same issues.  So we decided we would upgrade to an iPhone for her back in March.  Customer service said her plan was grandfathered in for an early upgrade and she would be eligible in May.  Great, so we waited a couple of months and when we looked into upgrading, the sales rep said she is not eligible until October, no early upgrades are available.  We told him what the CSR said, he said thats not what his system said and he began walking away.  I asked him to please call customer service.  He did, and after 45 minutes on the phone between Customer service and him and then customer service and my wife, it was determined she could upgrade that day, but it would have to be through the phone.  I wish she did it on the phone there so all of this time wouldn't had been wasted, but we had things to do so she said we would call back when in the car.  The sales rep told us to ask about the free promotion Verizon is offering a free 32 GB iPhone 5C.
We got in the car, called the Customer Service number, talked to a rep who said that line was not eligible until October.  We told him about the entire conversation we just had 5 minutes ago at the store, he just kept insisting we were not eligible.  I asked to speak with a supervisor, he then put us on hold for 45 minutes and then we got disconnected.
We called back, spoke with another rep, told her about the upgrade, were told once again we were not eligible until October.  Once again we went through the entire conversation from the store, told her about being on the phone an hour and getting disconnected, she said she would look into everything, put us on hold for 15 minutes, came back and said we would be eligible June 30th....not today.  I asked about the Free 32GB 5C, she said that was for "select" customers and she could not offer that to us.  This was now disappointing on a few levels, between the last 2 hours of getting nowhere and now we are not eligible for something others can get, this left a bad taste in my mouth.  She put us on hold for a supervisor.  After going back and forth on being told by multiple reps we could upgrade in May and now being told we can't and not being given any reasons as to why this changes from one person to another, the Supervisor said she would make us eligible to upgrade early that day, but that because it was before 6/30 we could not get the 5C promotion.  We asked if we would be eligible for the promotion if we waited until June 30, she said yes, but we could not get it before then.  We confirmed this 3 times and asked her to put a note in the system so we would not have to go through this again.  She confirmed with me 3 times, we could upgrade that day and pay the discounted price for the 5C, but if we waited until 6/30 we would be eligible for the 32GB 5C at no charge.  This was what we were looking for and were willing to wait.
The other day I called to confirm that when we walk into the store next Monday-6/30 the notes were in the system, and we would not have any problem getting the promotion.  The rep said we would not be eligible to upgrade for any discounts until October....<sigh>  Went through previous conversations once again, asked for her to please look through the notes, she saw the supervisors note showing we could upgrade at the discount but no mention of the 5C promotion and said Marketing had not "Flagged" us for that promo and we could not get it.  I asked once again to speak to a supervisor, she looked through the account and repeated the same thing about not being flagged but she would send an email to the supervisor that added the notes and find out what was going on.  I asked to be CC'ed so I can have this all in writing, she said yes, and to expect to hear back from someone by the end of the next business day.
It is  now 4 days later, I have not heard from anybody, I figured today I would look at MY plan and see if I could at least use one of the lines on my account and see if I was eligible for the promotion.  Mind you, last year when I upgraded to the 5S, I was talked into adding my Verizon iPad to it, and instead of going month to month on it, add it to a shared plan, and I would be able to use the line on my iPad to upgrade to a newer phone, he even showed me how to do it myself.  So now when I was looking to do what I was promised I could do, I am not able to do it, it only showed I can upgrade to another tablet only.  I did the online chat and the rep told me that policies can change from day to day without notice.  This does not sit well with me at all.  I get sold to do something based on what the rules are one day, and tomorrow the rules change, this to me is equivalent to Bait & Switch and I now have to question the ethics here.  This also tells me Verizon at this point takes retained customers for granted where my past experience was so much better than it is now.
Due to the complete lack of communication and simply keeping notes of previous conversations in their system so you don't have to keep explaining yourself over and over and being told different things by every rep I speak to down the line, I am not just back at square one with my step daughters phone, but a step back on what I signed up for on my plan.
AT&T has a program now that pays the Early Termination Fee and gives full discounts and Promos for new customers.  I may be forced to look into this as it will cost me much less down the line in time and money, and I can use talk and data at the same time.
All I ask from Verizon is to listen, communicate, follow up and follow through.

Feel free to sink this, I rang and sorted it.

  • Work-around for lack of cut and paste for files in finder

I am new to Mac and have observed some past but closed discussions about the annoying lack of cut and paste in Finder. I too find it very time-consuming to move a file into the folder where I want it to live - especially from downloads. Using a MacBook Pro 13", my open windows are naturally on top of each other and using drag and drop with a touch-pad for file organisation is very cumbersome. Four finger behaviour on touch pad only helps so far.
The approach I adopt is to use cmd c to copy the files or folders in question. cmd ` to flick between finder windows (usually more than one is open) and cmd v to place the files or folders where I want them after navigating through to the destination folder. Shift cmd N gives me a new folder if required. cmd ` takes me back to source folder (usually downloads) so I can cmd delete the files and keep things tidy. This is lengthy to write down. It is however reasonably quick if your fingers know the keyboard shortcuts.
Is there a more efficient way for me to work around this inhibitory feature of Finder? "Save as" is only good if you know you have a folder in your file structure already created and named and suitable to receive the file you want to file away (usually an attachment to an email).

This is in reply to your last paragraph...
This is the Mac OS default Save As... dialog:
Notice that there is a downward pointing disclosure triangle to the right of the Save As: field. If you click on the disclosure triangle, a full Finder window will be exposed, and this will enable you to place downloaded files wherever you like.
Notice, also, that in the bottom left hand corner of the exposed finder window, you are able to create a new folder (in any location on your system) to which you are able to download files.
This works the same way in any Save As situation, using any app, and the app you are in will remember where you last chose to save a file so that repetitive navigation in these dialog boxes is somewhat reduced.

  • Creative Audigy lack of specifics and vaguen

First of all, let me just say that i've never known a hardware card maker that can be so popular
while at the same time be some of the most incredibly vague people on the planet. Its absolutely
    amazing. Case example:
    Exhibit A. I'm a computer tech and I come
across an Audigy card in computer that i'm
fixing so I need the *correct* drivers.
Exhibit B. I have an Audigy cd-rom disk from apreviously owned card. I try to install the driverbut they're obviously incorrect but ALAS! the
cd-rom i'm holding say its for an Audigy.
Exhibit C. The drivers don't work correctlyso I check my windows Control Panel to seeif theres a way to *specifically" identifyit but the only thing it says is "Sound BlasterAudigy". Lovely. So, which brand could it be?
Exhibit D. Ok, I need the correct drivers fora *specific* Audigy brand and I go to the Creativewebsite to do a search for Audigy drivers. Whatdo I find? About 0 different Audigy cards. Great. Here we go with the lack of specifics and vagueness....
Exhibit E. So I proceed to take the card out ofthe computer and look at the model number toidentify it. It says "Soundblaster Audigy Model SB0090" and below that it also says"Audigy SB394 Advanced HD". So i'm thinkinghmmmm could this be an SB0090 or an SB394 butI soon find out its an SB0090 because an SB394is a "Firewire chip", which leads me to....
Exhibit F. I find a link on the Creative websitethe says "Identify your product" and behold Ifind the SB0090 listed but its only listed as "Sound Blaster Audigy card with gold jack connectorand 394 port"..... so its off to the loony bin again.Again, which brand Creative? Still theres 0 differentbrands and still no way to specifically identify it!
Exhibit G. Maybe I can tell by looking atthe pictures of the products provided on thewebsite. What do I find? Several differentcards that all look the same! They have the "gold jack connectors and 394 port" aswell as the "Advanced HD".
So what is it's A "Gamer"? An "LS"? A "Platinum"or could it be an Audigy 2? WAKE UP CREATIVE,YOUR SOOOO VAGUE! Heres proof in summary:
. Windows Control Panel - "Sound Blaster Audigy"But which brand?
    2. On the card itself - says "Sound Blaster AudigyModel SB0090".... but leads to nowhere becauseCreative's "Identify Your Product" only says:
    3. "gold jack connectors 394" but theresmore than one brand (Firewire) that look the
    same in the pictures!
And here I am still with an unknown "Audigy" brand and no drivers that I can be sure willcorrectly work. Amazing, because if I were the owner of this card instead of the computertech, i'd probably throw your "Audigy" in the garbage (but i'd probably hit it with a sledgehammer a few times first).Message Edited by ZauR on 2-04-2004 09:55 PM

    ZauR,
The Audigy downloads are listed by the packages that they came in. This was done to insure that customers that purchased a specific type of card (say an Audigy Gamer) would know that they were going to the right place. The driver pages for all but the LS is the same. So it isn't really a case of being vague, we are actually being rather specific (as a single listing for "Audigy" would be vague). Since there was never a retail package that was just an "Audigy" there is no listing like that.
For the SB0090, I would suggest going to the Audigy Gamer download page (it is what I use for my SB0090) but really any of the pages except for the LS will work. The Audigy LS is the only Audigy card that requires different drivers and software.

  • Lack of apps and games!

i've been a fan of nokia phones for a long time... last year i bought a nokia c7 and i love it but there is a big problem that nokia is having which is LACK OF APPS AND HD GAMES!!
i mean check out the app store or the android market with its amazing apps and fun games!!
and i started hating my phone for this!
can u find a solution? plz

There is no solution, but you have choices. You can wait and see what gets released or you can sell your phone and buy one that has the apps/games you want.
The symbian operating system is coming to an end (as announced in February 2011) so it's only natural that developers of apps/games have turned their attention to other platforms, such as Windows Phone that Nokia is now using as it's primary smartphone platform.

  • Lack of Primary and Foreign Keys and Efficiency

I am reverse engineering a Maximo database. I am shock that it does not have Primary or foreign keys define for 590 out of 620 tables.
My question is does the lack of Primary and Foreign key relationships adversely impact the efficiency of an Oracle database? I think it does IBM techs do not think it does.
    Anyone has the answer?

does the lack of Primary and Foreign key relationships adversely impact the efficiency of an Oracle database? Not necessarily. There are many large OLTP databases that do not define PKs and FKs.
It is true that the presence of constraint defintions is used by the optimizer. However,
what matters is how the application is written and how the optimizer handles it.
Remember that Oracle Databases have been in production since before constraint definitions were introduced.

  • Lack of Sony and Nintendo games for "Get $10" offer

What is up with the lack of Sony and Nintendo exclusive games for the "Get $10" offer? You guys have had tons of Xbox exclusive games on the list(recently Halo MCC, Sunset Overdrive, Halo 5), but there has been a severe lack of Sony or Nintendo games(The Order 1886, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse). Do you have some kind of prerogative to push mainly Xbox games? or are you getting rid of this offer since there are no games listed past June?

    Hello Nightshde,
Thanks for sharing your perspective with us regarding additional titles you would like to see added to the "Get $10" promotion.
We've had some form of a pre-order bonus for video games ongoning for the past few years, so I would anticipate that it will continue.  As new titles are announced we will update our forum post here.  To share your feedback on specific games that you think should be added please visit our IdeaX board, vote up the ideas you like and list the ones that you don't already see.

  • Hp4530s lacks recovery manager and recovery patition.

My hp probook 4530s - (core i3 2350m - Windows 7 64 bit) laptop lacks recovery manager and recovery patition. It has genuine windows 7 but it doesnt include recovery CDs as well.
1)So how can i recover the computer and set to factory settings with original OS and Hp software?
2)Can i do it by pressing F11 when booting.
3)Will it takes to recovery manager even if there is no recovery partition or recovery manager in the laptop?
4)Sellers say this product has a hidden recovery partition and it will work when you press F11. Is that true?
Please reply me as soon as possible. Thank you

    Hi:
if there is no recovery manager or recovery partition, then you won't be able to use the F11 method to recover the OS.
I never heard of a hidden recovery partition on any HP business notebook I am familiar with.
I guess you can always start up the PC and at the beginning of the HP welcome screen, tap the F11 key and see what prompts you get (if any).
The best thing to do, is to order a set of recovery disks from HP by calling them for the country you live in at the link below.
Call the number listed for business PC's notebooks. You will need to provide the model number and serial number.
    http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.html
You can also make your own windows 7 reinstallation DVD if you can read the 25 character product key on the bottom of your notebook.  Here's how:
If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to a DVD for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.
Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.
Or use the Windows 7 USB/DVD installation tool to compile the ISO file you download from Digital River. Link and instructions below. You need a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB method of compilation.
    http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool
Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.

  • Ios 7 : poor quality -  usability and readability

As an project manager who helped to include in projects at an international level usability testing and as a major Project manager who included iterative usability design, testing and feedback in this project, I am sad to say that I am VERY disappointed with the 'so-called' NEW design of is ios7.  I find the typography, design and colour scheme very poor from a usability and readability point of view and believe that ios6 design was, and is, much easier to READ and LESS TIRING on the eyes I would like to have an option of moving my ipad mini BACK TO iso6  (PLEASSSSSE...).
    I have decided that our iPhones will remain on iOS 6 and I will NOT upgrade to OSX Mavrick. Moreover and consequently,I will NOT BUY any new versions of the iphones, ipads, or MAC computers that already have preinstalled ios7 !! {At least until APPLE comes back to decent designs, or at least gives users a design choice !}
The whole situation has been aggravated by the fact that when I upgraded to Pages 2.0 on the ipad mini, I discovered, to my HORROR, that Pages 2.O and the ios6 versions of PAGES nor the OSX10.8 versions of PAGES are not compatible. That is,I could no longer synchronize with my ios6 versions of pages nor with  OSX10.8 (EVEN MICROSOFT DOES NOT MAKE THIS TYPE OF ERROR !!!).
I tried deleting Pages on the ipad mini {hoping that the ios6 version of pages would be recovered from my computer back-up, only to discover that Pages 2.0 (that I do not want) had reinstalled on the ipad mini.
To use PAGES with icloud on the ipad mini, APPLE wants me to upgrade to Mavrick (on my THREE Apple computers) and ios7 on my iPhones: this I do not want to do.
So, I will just be obligued to STOP using PAGEs and find another software program instead.
I require: more readable ios7 software and programs like contacts, calander, etc. Please do not modify ibooks original design !!
I require also : backward compatible PAGES (between ios7 and 6) buut preferably to switch back to ios6 as well as moving back a version on PAGES to the ios6 version. (For your infomration, there are many forums complaining about the design of ios7 ).
THIS FEEDBACK HAS BEEN SENT TO APPLE SUPPORT !

Downgrading is not Supported by Apple.

  • File Managers usability and features discussion

I have few questions about file manages that you use. Which are better, and why - what functionalities, UI, usability solutions are important?
Q1. Do you prefer icon list file managers (dolphin, nautilus, thunar) over twin panel list managers (krusader, total commander on windows)?
Q2. Do you like small and simple icons (by default in total commander), or bigger and more detailed (like in krusader by default, and others)?
Q3. What are the biggest bad/unusable features of file managers that you used/use?
Q4. How do you rate "file managers" that also handle other URLs (in tabs for example) ("mini" web browser, network filesystems - FTP, SFTP, SMB, terminal, binary file preview - PDF, images, multimedia files) -- konqueror like apps?

Total commander xp (extendet +many plugins..) - is all in all THE best fm, on linux there is NO one that can be like it..
Tcmd burn ripp combine archive play music audio edit tagname viewing all files taht i needet, multi re-name editing calendar webbroswing, ftp crypting, sorting hell stable, running, proces managing, services manageg and hell more... With that one, then i haved looong time ago winxp.. i didnt needet nothing more just tcmdxp...
Q1. Thunar is only for eye candy just to see oh how nice - for rare usage or show, but not for dayly usage; emelfm, worker, krusader, xfe is more quiqer way to do something... I prefer two panes managers.
Q2. If icons lags opening say directory with couple hunderts+ files, its no use of them. Tcmd is ok.
Its even better to have colorized by fyle type or extension. So i prefer wery small and w.quiqly and clear looking, working, icons but its not necesery.
Q3. Im still cant find - normal fm on linux, many off them just lack of logic, simplyness, compfortnes:
Lets say i take emelfm - point is to create couple hunderts symlinks at once-at one cmd or one push after selecting - it does taht in no time,
lets take as example worker fm - it ask 200times to name those symlinks without any kind off options to automatize this action..... Absurd. Wheres the logic..
This example is most freaquent on almost every linux fm on one way or another for many different actions copy move clone... some event cant manage multiple files at once..
None of linux managers suport hardlinks... I found crusader shity does that in same dir with asking to name it... as mentioned no multi..
Doublecommander makes hardlinks to.. but too in some shit borring way - oh sorry time consuming way .
And i cant say there is manager that have biggest unusable features - cause all off them lacks or have features that other doesnt have.
And those that already are inplemented, are not a stright way to do something. Like some fm's (im talking only about two panes at all in this section, cause i dont use 1window fms) even cant handle multiple symlinkinking at once - i select files but some creates only one link to first in selection file.
And simplyness - some managers pops up for one action - too manny question boxes, with selections like suggesting, check that, chose that - why not to put that in one box of that action..
Q4. Remmeber how fast and nice way is atrl+q on tcmd, and u on one pane quiqly go true files and on other pane it shows-plays-views automaticaly any file, and that does in no time. On linux zero managers do that ! Worker acts something like - for viewing pictures. Mc as console manager to... In emelfm i was able to implement audio files playing true sox..
I dont like qonqueror, way like it shows images is not the same way like i want that in two pane managers.
But after all to your question, i rate wery high. Its just a waist of time to opoening files in external programs - just to preview, "oh its not that one"..
Nice, then u can enter into isos, archives like to in a folder...
I tryed: total commander xp, double commander, xnc, bsc, xfe, df, emelfm, emelfm2, krusader, gnome-commander, worker, gentoo, thunar, pcmanfm, rox, mc, vfu,
I wish a mixed up thing of (totalcommanderxp), emelfm, worker, krusader, xnc, emelfm2, - all to one will be Something..
Damn that emelfm2 is unstable - no use.. i like it, how it works - configured without icons.
Now im exploring/using worker fm, i like the way how it can be configured, its great fm, jsut laks litle bit something there or there, if it will fix evaluate - i think i will stay with it..
krusader is always on my sys - cause its hell stable, i trust on it totaly. Heh but is huge...
emelfm first fm that i found may way, on linux i love it...even if it lacks something.. like multirename.. - its hell fast for dayly usage,
sad sad there is no normal fm, i always must chose one over another to do some things that other fm isnt capable to do in a quiqer way..
in a system is ok to have one windowed manager for eye candy things (like thunar) i have it.. i dont use it.. , and one that is for many files managing

  • Lumia 822 lacks good ereader and camera sucks

Lumia 822 lacks decent app to enjoy books and magazines and camera sucks
I bought the Nokia Lumia 822 because it allowed use of a micro SD card which would expand available memory and because it came with Office.  I have been happy with the SD card capability (although today I had to reseat the SD card because the card doesn’t snap into place, it just kind of sits there – I ended up losing all my photos from March 2013, but, hey, at least the majority were there).  Office is functional though I wouldn’t be able to do major spreadsheets in it.  I also had to send back my original phone for a refurbished phone when it crashed about a week after that major update.  I wasn't happy about receiving a refurbished phone, considering what a personal item a cellphone is.
While I knew apps were a limitation being on the bleeding edge of technology, I assumed they would emerge soon enough and was willing to wait.  I bought the phone in November 2012 and as of today (April 2013), there still is no decent app with which to buy books and magazines.  This is a major bummer.
As an amateur photographer, I find the Nokia Lumia 822 Windows Phone camera incredibly disappointing on its own and particularly with respect to the iPhone 5.  This is in stark contrast to Nokia’s assertion that they will set themselves apart with their cameras and comes after a February (or March?) 2013 update that was supposed to fix the camera’s color issues.  It previously had a green tint, which improved with the update but the color is still not great.  Just to note up front, I am not an Apple fanboi by any stretch, preferring the Microsoft Surface as opposed to the iPad3 (both of which I have owned).
The Lumia 822 camera takes forever to focus and shoot once you’ve hit the screen.  If you instead choose to shoot using the camera button, you have to press so hard that the phone inevitably shakes.  The pictures come out blurry with  washed out colors no matter what you do.  Taking the same shot with the iPhone 5, it shoots quickly and comes out crystal clear, with vibrant colors.  I have noticed that the largest photo size on the Lumia 822 is like 2 MB, while it is over 4 MB on the iPhone 5.
Today, when I tried to send some photos from my brother’s iPhone 5 to the Lumia 822, I noticed that Apple provided 3 choices – the original photo size, which was like 4.5 MB, a medium photo size and a small photo size.  Such choices are not available on the Lumia 822.  In any case, I chose the original size of 4.5 MB and when I received the photo on the Lumia 822 chose Save to Phone.  Yet when I forwarded my mom that same photo from my Lumia 822, it sent as 850 KB.  I don’t know how to see the size of the photo that was saved on my phone but I’m guessing it wasn’t 4.5 MB for whatever reason.
I had been psyched about the upcoming Lumia that was a 41 megapixel camera but now I even have doubts about that.
I actually bought Nokia stock, some at $3.56 and some at $4.58, but I’m starting to regret it.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I think you should have picked 920 instead of 822, I believe their new release 720 has better camera than 820/822.
I bought 920 for my brother as present, he is a good man and always wanted to upgrade his old phone to smartphone era.. Anyways, 920 felt superb, camera seemed quality wise similar to my Iphone 4s, which was excellent camera for smartphone, but it also added OIS and some nifty photolenses, like that animation edit thing and excellent other features that made my own Iphone pale in comparison.
As what comes to me, I bought Nokia 808 over 920 which I now regret. Quality wise 808 is WAYYY superior even to my Sony Alpha 300 SLR with basic lens. I still cannot believe how sharp and realistic images I get. Add excellent video recording and that lossless zoom, I absolutely love it. But as compared into Iphone as a phone and portable media device Nokia Pureview 808 is so bad! Browsing internet is worse, watching videos is worse, settings are mess up.. Its usable but I would give it an poor grade as a SMARTPHONE, as this tiny camera; Superior.
920 would have given me Excellent camera with all the other great sh*t Nokia offers nowadays.
I am waiting 920 + 808 combo Lumia with 41Mpx lossless zoom and OIS, with water proof and solar energy!
