Lagging, Freezing, hiccuping, halting, buzzing and other synonyms

Navigating for for this problem has been as much of a problem as the jarring intermitten functionality of my Satellite S55t-B5273NR, so I thought I would help anyone else who couldnt find the right words.
My laptop is brand new, but I still updated the drivers because thats just a thing people tell you to do whenever things go wrong. Suffice to say, every 5-15 seconds the mouse, and video will freeze, jar, hiccup, stay put... etc and the audio will "bzzzt" if something is playing. This happens whether or not browsers, games, videos, or nothing but the desktop is open. Ive checked the performance and processes for spikes that might cause lag, but nothing. The temperature is fine, All ease of access functions are off.
tl;dr annoying pauses. Laptop up to date, not overworked or hot. Please help.
Thank you.

Toshiba S55B
Brand New laptop, had no issues using for 2 weeks, and just now it started the exact same problem you have described.
I am not sure what causes it but its not USABLE at all under these issues. I am bringing my back to BestBuy, hopefully they will refund me, I do not want to deal with this God knows what problem. It could be a software but looks like a CPU or HDD problem.

  • Macbook Pro Freezes with Screen Distortion and other problems...

So I've had my 13' Macbook Pro for about 9 months and I am encountering problems with it. My Macbook would sometimes freeze at random and the screen would distort as well, also, the screen would react whenever I would move the laptop around by either reverting back to a normal screen (still frozen) or more distortion which leads me to believe that it might have something to do with the hardware. But all this is temporarily solved when I force shut off my laptop (hold the power button for 3 seconds) and restart it. It can start up again with no problem, but this happens again, more early than usual and becomes more consatnt. However this is lessened whenever I don't use my laptop for an extended amount of time, but it does happens again whenever I do use it for some time.
Another problem I've been encountering is that, at times after I force shut off the laptop, my computer would not turn back on. Instead, the laptop beeps 3 times, pause, then beep 3 times again. I have looked into this and discovered that this means that I have "No Good Banks"..........I have no idea what this means but I guess it means that I might have faulty RAM.
What I ask is that if anyone has had similar problems and if they know what to do or what exactly what the problem is so that I might be able to do something about it.
    Info about Macbook:
Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory: 4GB 1600 Mhz DDR3

Bump. Anyone have any ideas on this?
I "shut it off" last night, but when I turned it on again tomorrow, it turned out it didn't quite shut down?
It booted to the grey log-in screen, basically.
I've also come to the realisation that my charger isn't registered (the LED isn't orange/green like it usually is), and I can't get a "battery status" (I'm sure it has another name, I just don't know what it is) when I click on the little button on the left hand side of the laptop. Usually, it would show green dots/LEDS to tell me how far along it's charged, but now I get nothing.
I get the distinct feeling something's up with my battery, and maybe my RAM (because of the repeated triple beep after shutting down last night).

  • G4 MDD Freezes when loading software and others

    I have a G4 MDD, Dual 1.25 Ghz
    2mb L3 Cache per processor
Not realizing the Mac had multiple drives as a RAID. I tried to install a newer system. It fried the drives.
I replaced the drives with one 250GB ATA drive.
I am getting odd freezes such as when updating software, working on the internet and working in software programs such as CS3.
I did have some freeze problems while installing 10.4.11 after replacing the HD, but was successful after several attempts.
Could I have damaged the logic board or motherboard when the RAID drives were zapped?
I was trying to find the Apple Hardware Test, but only found Disk Utility to run.
Disk Utility said everything was fine. But I suspect there is something more to fix.
And the down loadable hardware test was for system 9.

The drive is set by jumpers usually located next to the power connector on the back on the "data" end of the drive. The way jumpers are set can depend on manufacturer. Go to your drive manufacturer's web site and search by model number (Disk Utility will give you the model without your having to dismount the drive). Typically, a drive manufacturer will have one scheme for all its drives so you may need only search for "jumper settings."
The little jumpers are moved to different pairs of pins to change the connection type. This image shows the jumper block location and settings for one model of Western Digital drive:
    http://support.wdc.com/images/drives/jumpers/jumpers.gif
Again, find YOUR drive's make and model before moving jumpers.

  • Freezing - emails in outlook, and other whinges

I am having the continuing problem of only being able to send/receive one email, attachments or not, when in outlook, before everything freezes, and I then have to use task manager to exit.  I have routed my emails through gmail but miss outlook.  I have an XP desktop, Word 2000, OUtlook 2007, the BT infiinity hub and live close to an exchange.  I have been unable to set up an IMAP account for reasons which I have gone into before but were unresolved (the outgoing server information is only given as "POP3" although I am given an IMAP incoming server address when checking for the set up details in Yahoo; I wont use Yahoo webmail due to the incessant advertising, which a BT support advisor told me has to stay as Yahoo pay them "millions of pounds" for the privilege).  I did not have this problem with TalkTalk and the phone calls were cheaper - I went with BT as I wanted the faster broadband speeds but to be honest, my downloaded tv and radio programmes still buffer all the time.  I dont have the time or energy to ring support any more and anyway, you always get a different answer depending on who you speak to.  Im actually paying a lot more for a service that only really benefits me with regard to downloading a certain programme with a faster speed. If TalkTalk had offered better service when I wanted to upgradae my speeds, (to be honest, their customer service at that stage was shocking) I would have stayed where I was.

Just picking one bit out of all that. If the adverts really are the only reason you don't want to use BT Yahoo! webmail, a Google search for "ie ad block" will find you a solution assuming you're using Internet Explorer.

  • LaCie Rugged 1TB freezes in OS X and other issues

    Macbook Pro Retina (Mid 2012)
Processor  2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
    OS X 10.8.2 (12C3006)
I purchased a LaCie Rugged 1TB portable drive today that supports thunderbolt and USB 3.0.  I performed the initial formating of the drive in parallels virtualized Windows 7 with the entire drive being shared for both OS X and Windows usage.  In both operating systems, if I try to access the default software folders that are on the drive from the manufacturer, (LaCie Setup and Private-Public) the system hangs and requires a hard boot.  OS X timestamp just shows the time hung from the moment I clicked on a folder.  This has happened after restarts, power-offs on all ports for both USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt.
When it is functional, the date transfer speeds are extremely slow (I was notified during formating that a shared format would mean the maximum speed for transfers would be 4TB/sec) but moving a 29.34GB iPhoto library in OS X to the drive did the following transfer metrics:
2 minutes into the transfer only 199.2MB was transfered
6 minutes into the transfer 11.78GB was transfered
11 minutes into the transfer 26.99GB was transfered
14 minutes 28 seconds into the transfer 29.34GB was transfered (completed)
    This is 33.8 MB/sec average.

Does anyone have any idea if there is a software problem, or other problem?  I think I'll have to return the drive and / or have the macbook looked at because something appears to be wrong.

I just remembered something. Check the permission on the Adobe preference files in your Home
directory (~/Library/Preferences). At some point in time (after the 10.6.2 update) my user ownership
Adobe prefs. got changed to "root". I had to manually change ownership back to my User name
(account). It wasn't just Adobe prefs., some other prefs. were affected as well. I don't know if that
is the problem causing your issues, but it may something be worth checking out.

  • My Mac is extremely slow, lags, freezes.... and it's only a year old.

I've contacted support three times, and it still hasn't fixed my problem...Now that my apple support is EXPIRED, its still having issues. If they fixed it the first, even second, ****, even the third time, then I wouldn't be here. I know nothing of Macs. I recently converted so I have no idea.
It gets better when I restart for a few hours then as soon as I run more then 2 programs it starts giving me the busy icon, my bars won't come out of auto-hide, and the last time I restarted, for some reason my background disappeared and now it's just the Default?
I need my computer for school as I'm Pre-Med at my University, Majoring in Micro with a Minor. I'm very busy, I don't have time to deal with this. Legit.
Please somebody help. Macs are supposed to be better than PC and right now, my last PC at least ran way better than what my Mac is doing now. That's bad.

  • 10.8.3 rendered my MBP to lag and freeze (and other issues)

Okay. I have a Macbook Pro 9,1 (non-retina, Mid-2012).  After installing 10.8.3 through App Store, my computer begins to lag, and it would completely freeze in about 2 hours or so.  It starts with one application 'not responding' and it would spread to other applications.  When I try to Force Quit, that Force Quit window would freeze as well.  None of my keyboard, track pad etc would work. I had to force shut down by holding the Power button.
    I have done the following:
    Restart
Restart with 'Reopen Windows when logging back in' off
    SMC Reset
    PRAM Reset
    Hardware Test
    Disk Permission Repair
    Repair Disk
    Reinstall OS
    Reinstall using COMBO Update
fsck -fy in Single User Mode
I also checked the ~Library/Logs/Diagnostic Log and Uninstalled (with official uninstaller) EyeConnect (who crashed in the background for about 8 times during my 24hrs use of 10.8.3.)
While going through that list, I found issues in kernel_task taking up a lot of RAM (1+ GB in normal mode) (~400 GB in safe mode). The free RAM would also be miniscule just before the multiple freezes I had.
Booting through Safe mode, after about 2 minutes or so after boot, My RAM looks like this:
(No Free Space, Wired taking up 6GB...) The Animation would be very choppy  and I would be using Nvidia Graphics Card (GT-650M) instead of Intel Graphics 4000, when nothing graphic intensive is up.  Some Post floating in the Support Communities also mentioned how the VRAM for Intel Graphics 4000 shrunk from 512MB to 384MB. I think I have the same problem as well.
I've been to Apple Store/Genius Bar Twice: They basically said I should wipe the computer and hope for the best.  They also checked my Hardware, and it seems alright.
I thought of rolling back to 10.8.2 through Time Machine, but for some reasons, my HDD (through Thunderbolt) would not mount when booted from the recovery partition. It's there in Disk Utility, just won't mount. When accessing the HDD through USB 3.0, my most recent back-ups are not present, with the most recent update from March 2nd.  (March 3rd ~ March 18th Missing.)This shouldn't be the case, as I back up multiple times every day. I am also able to view the recent dates through Time Machine ('Enter Time Machine' from the menu bar).
I think the only thing left I could do would be Rolling back to March 2nd or Wiping my computer to factory settings.  Both I'm quite reluctant to do so, for obvious reasons.
Hypothesis on the issue: I think it's the RAM management gone wrong, causing the computer to lag+freeze so much.  I predict the wipe won't help much.  But we won't know what will happen unless we do it, I guess...
Did I mention about the sleep problems I had before 10.8.3? I'll skip those since it's not fatal, but they're not resolved in 10.8.3 as well. I installed 10.8.3 hoping to solve those problems, only to get even more problems Help Please? Thanks!

  • Lagging freezing and crashing

I can't remember when it started.
My iMac (2 years) started taking too much time processing: while typing, for example, it showed nothing, and after I stopped he started showing the letters.
Then the beach ball appeared most of the time. i was using Firefox by that time.
I had to force quit several times.
Tried to update Firefox, didn't work.
Most of the time I had to force quit or even shut down completely. Some times it even didn't restore (blue screen or apple screen forever), had to shut down again and let it for a while.
Tried Safari, started well, then the whole situation of lagging, freezing crashing started.
Tried Google Chrome. Started beautifully. Now the whole situation again.
I cannot work for a straight hour. The beach ball is always there!!
Yesterday I downloaded the last combo of updates for OS 10.6.8, I updated my CS5 (Bridge, PS, InDesign, Illustrator and Camera Raw).
I have two external drives, but never used the Time Machine feature.
I'm not a experienced technical person.
    Any clue?
I'm really planning asking for Apple support. I have lots of work to finish (I cannot finish them on a PC - Mac only app)... but if anybody can give me a clue for now... I'm really getting crazy about it.
    Thank you!

    Hi
I have a similar story. It also started with Firefox showing the beach ball. Now, it is mostly the Finder who shows it when doing any action. I can be working in an application with no problem, but the moment I use the finder to save a file in a different location, the beach ball appears.
Once the first symptom, everything starts complicating and, in some cases, the whole computer freezes. I can not even use the Command+Alt+Esc to invoke the window to close the unresponsive programs. It all ends with a hard switch off of the computer.
Although I have not found yet the solution to the problems, I can advance what I did. It may be that you are a bit luckier and any of these help.
    > Repair permissions & verify disk (in "Utilities" > Disk Utility)
    > Used Onyx  to clean all caches
    > Disconnected external USB drives, tablet, printers, etc. (all peripherals).
My system HD has plenty of emtpy space (a bit more than 200Gb)
Hope anyone can suggest something different.
    Regards.

  • Problem with ipod, lagging, freezing, and also skipping to the end on video

i've had my ipod for about 4 months now and i can't help to realize my fairly new ipod is slowing down on loading.
when i first started, a white screen comes up and in the middle, it has an ipod and reads, "www.apple.com/support"
main reason why i came to this place.
thats fine to me, it works when i restart it.
then, i press a few buttons, Music -> Artist -> and whatever i want to listen to, but you know how the pages are suppose to pass? my ipod suddenly lags up(slows down) and at the top it shows that im going to those pages, but the screen won't change, then after 30 seconds, the page is loaded.
when i play a song, it tends to freeze a couple times and play again, i don't think this is such a big problem, because it only freezes for about 1 to 10 seconds at most.
also since i have an ipod video, i like to put some funny videos on it. the video when i play it, it is frozen for a couple seconds and play, but plays all the way at the end, meaning that the video has been skipped to the end of it.
these are my problems, anyone who has any idea what so ever what is wrong with my ipod then please reply.
    note!!
i have tried restoring over and over again.
i have dropped my ipod a few times, but not that far from the ground.

Did you Reset it or Restore it in iTunes? And if the latter, it successfully completed the Restore?

  • Why does reader freeze while opening some pdf files and others open instantaneously?

I use pdf files created from CamScanner and shared from DropBox.  In DropBox, many times (over 50%) while opening the PDF the process freezes and the error message is Adobe Reader is not responding.  If you close the program, and re-open the file, it opens fine.  I have saved these files to my computer and the same issue occurs.  The files are 100-500kb, so I do not think size is the issue.  I have reinstalled Reader (11.1.10) and there is no improvement.

This appears to have reduced the time to load a document.  Thanks Jimb      From: Anubha Goel <[email protected]>

  • MacBook  Pro screen glitches out, gray lines appear on it then my computer freezes and must be restarted sometimes it will beep 3 times when restarting and other times it won't. Is this a virus?

I have a MacBook Pro running mavericks. Sometimes the screen glitches out, gray lines appear on it then my computer freezes and must be restarted sometimes it will beep 3 times when restarting and other times it won't. Is this a virus, software issue, water damage, etc? An error message usually appears after being restarted. It does it all the time please help.

No Virus. You have a Hardware Problem. 3 Beeps means a RAM problem. You could try Reseating the RAM is its sockets.
But that wouldn't necessarily cause the screen to Glitch Out, as you say.

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
    * On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
