"Laggy" animations on Mavericks

I'm having "laggy" animations from the system like mission control, switching apps and others. I read on Mavericks causing problems with scrolling and Mission Control some solutions that did not work for me. I've had a similar problem on 10.8, tried a bunch of things that I don't remember, what I do remember is that the problem was solved completly after I updated to 10.9. So from the day 10.9 was released until yesterday my MBPr was fine, today when I started using I noticed the problem. I instaled AutoCAD 2014 yesterday, maybe it is the problem maybe it's not, but anyway I need AutoCAD to work...
So following John Galt's advice I'm posting here my output from http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck:

Cool, worked here too. My computer crashed a couple of hours ago with a stuck screen (switching desktop). After rebooting it had laggy scroll / mission control etc. Resetting SMC did nothing, but opening AutoCAD fixed it. Unfortunately I only have trial on AutoCAD, so will need a new solution if it reappears after the end of the month.

  • Laggy animations Mavericks

I got a Mac Pro 2009. I got it a month ago and installed mountain lion on it, the animations were very slow and it didn't work at all. I didn't understand it because it should be compatible. So I decided to wait for Mavericks. I did a clean install and whiped the whole hard drive, but still there are these laggy animations. When I scroll, launch launchpad, start safari etc. It is terrible, I can't do anything. I have already tried a lot of troubleshooting, but nothing works. I need to get it fixed as soon as possible. Please help...

Here are some ideas for why animations are may be slow:
    • Competition for the Boot Drive --
If everything you are manipulating and all the System and Program information is on one drive, it can induce a "traffic jam" around that drive. The drive heads are sent all over the drive getting a little of this and a little of that, and everything slows down.
The easiest way to speed up a Mac Pro is to have the Boot Drive (with only System, Library, Applications, and the hidden unix files including Paging/Swap on one drive, and all User data on another drive. If the Boot drive is a low-latency SSD, that gives an even bigger improvement.
    • A failing Boot Drive--
Disk data are recorded with an error correcting code that can fix a few bits in a burst. When a data block cannot be read on the first try, you may suffer up to 1,000 re-tries in an attempt to get correctable data. If it eventually does get correctable data, everything proceeds. If not, you get I/O error.
    • Competing processes --
Web-based synchronization, such as iCloud photo sync or DropBox are notorious for using up bursts of compute cycles doing un-needed synchronization.. You may find you get better results if you shut those off while trying to run animations

  • SAFARI IS REALLY SLOW AND LAGGY IN OSX MAVERICKS 10.9.1 UPDATE

HELP!!! Okay so i stopped using Chrome a few months ago and switched to safari as my daily go-getter and it was fine. No bad lag and bad stuff. After I updated my Macbook Pro(13 inch, mid-2009 model, 2.26GHz, 2gb RAM) to OS X MAVERICKS 10.9.1 everything was working fine the first time. The next day(today) i switched on my laptop and started using safari. All of a sudden, safari became really laggy and it affected my laptop as well! So i forced quit it and tried it again. IT HAPPENED AGAIN! Safari and My laptop became laggy. This has been going on for the past 10 times i've forced quit and reopened safari. At first i thought maybe every browser would be this slow. But i opened chrome and its working flawlessly! As i'm typing this right now, i''m using chrome. Any suggestions to help me with safari? I don't wanna turn on Safari until i get a proper answer on how to fix this.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostictest. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary in case your startup drive is failing.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as some other aspects of the configuration that may be related to the problem.
Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out. Here's a brief summary: In each of two steps, you copy a line of text from this web page into a window in another application. You wait about a minute. Then you paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is copy; paste; paste again. That's all there is to it. Details follow.
While investigating the problem, you may have started the computer in "safe" mode. If possible, these steps should be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing. If you can only boot in safe mode, you can still use this procedure, but not all of it will work. Be sure to mention that in your reply, if you haven't already done so.
Below are instructions to enter UNIX shell commands. The commands are safe and do nothing but produce human-readable output, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. I am not asking you to trust me. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
The commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. Step 1 should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PB=/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy; PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && printf '\n%s:\n\n%s\n\n' "$1" "$o"; }; PF () { o=$($PB -c Print "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'); PR "$1"; }; { o=$(( $(vm_stat | awk '/Pageo/{sub("\\.",""); print $2}')/256 )); [[ $o -gt 1024 ]] && printf "\nPageouts: %s MiB\n\n" $o; o=$(kextstat -kl | grep -v com\\.apple | cut -c53- | cut -d\< -f1); PR "Loaded extrinsic kernel extensions"; o=$(launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)|\.[0-9]+$/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic user agents"; o=$(launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES); PR "Inserted libraries"; o=$(crontab -l); PR "User cron tasks"; o=$(cat /e*/lau*); PR "Global launchd configuration"; o=$(cat ~/.lau*); PR "Per-user launchd configuration"; PF "Global login items" /L*/P*/loginw* Path; PF "Per-user login items" L*/P*/*loginit* Name; PF "Safari extensions" L*/Saf*/*/E*.plist Bundle | sed 's/\..*$//;s/-[1-9]$//'; o=$(find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) | wc -l); [[ $o -eq 0 ]] || printf "\nRestricted user files: %s\n\n" $o; cd; o=$(find -L /S*/L*/E* {,/}L*/{A*d,Compon,Ex,In,Keyb,Mail/Bu,P*P,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo}* -type d -name Contents -prune | while read d; do ID=$($PB -c 'Print :CFBundleIdentifier' "$d/Info.plist"); ID=${ID:-No bundle ID}; egrep -qv "^com\.apple\.[^x]|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|HDPro|HighPoint|driver\.stex|hp-fax|JMicron|microsoft\.MDI|print|SoftRAID" <<< $ID && printf '%s\n\t(%s)\n' "${d%/Contents}" "$ID"; done); PR "Extrinsic loadable bundles"; o=$(find /u*/{,*/}lib -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b "$1" | grep -qw shared && ! codesign -v "$1"' {} {} \; -print); PR "Unsigned shared libraries"; for d in {,/}L*/{La,Priv,Sta}* L*/Fonts; do o=$(ls -A "$d"); PR "$d"; done; } 2> /dev/null | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 1 done'
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. Wait for the line "Step 1 done" to appear below what you entered. The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
Remember that you must be logged in as an administrator for this step. Do as in Step 1 with this line:
    PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && printf '\n%s:\n\n%s\n\n' "$1" "$o"; }; { o=$(sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|calendarse|cups|dove|isc|ntp|post[fg]|x)/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic daemons"; o=$(sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook); PR "Login hook"; o=$(sudo crontab -l); PR "Root cron tasks"; o=$(syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'error|GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail -n25 | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'); PR "Log check"; } 2> /dev/null | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 2 done'
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    You can then quit Terminal.
To prevent confusion, I'll repeat: When you type your password in the Terminal window, you won't see what you're typing.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, set one before taking Step 2. If that’s not possible, skip the step.
Important: If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output of these commands, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
Remember, Steps 1 and 2 are all copy-and-paste — type only your password. Also remember to post the output.

  • Laggy Animations

I updated my iPhone today to iOS 4.2.1; however, I have found that the multitasking animation ("lifting up" the screen) and the "exiting an app" animation are laggy. I know this isn't a huge problem but does anyone else experience this? If you did, was there a way to fix it?
    Thanks

you are more fortunate then me, i have been having this lag since the 4.0.1(it's the firmware i found when i bought iPhone 4) and i think it isn't a hardware problem because the lag are different within in correspondence of the firmware. For example before (4.1) the multitasking switch animation wasn't so good but i opened apps with simplicity, instead, now the animation of the multitasking is good but when i open and close apps, there is lag(4.2.1)

  • Turn off stupid mail animations in mavericks

I need a way to turn off the animations in mail.app in Mavericks.  In previous operating systems, a terminal command existed to do this (defaults write com.apple.mail DisableReplyAnimations -bool TRUE , and I believe DisableSendAnimations as well), but that popular terminal command, along with no-glass and perhaps some others, seems to have been disabled in Mavericks.
    Does another command exist?
If not, Apple, re-enable it.  These animations are horrendously stupid and a terrible design choice.

Are you referring to the new Notifications (in the upper right corner of your screen)?
If so, go to System Preferences > Notifications and drag Mail down to the "NOT in Notif. Center" Category. After that, make sure the window to the right has absolutely nothing checked:
    That will stop it.

  • Laggy animations because of Autocad 2013?

Hello, I'm having some problems with Autocad 2013. I've had it installed for almost 5 months and it never gave me any problems until now.
First of all, I was experiencing an unbearable lag with almost any animation (mission control, scrolling, switching between desktops, dock animations, etc) but, after doing some research on the internet, I realized it was Autocad's fault and the solution was to opening and closing it. That almost solved my problem.
A few minutes after opening and closing Autocad I realized that, even though the dock and "desktop switching" animations were working fine, scrolling was yet kinda choppy and mission control was having the same problems than before, so I tried opening Autocad and checking if the animations were working well whilst it was open. As a matter of fact, that was the solution of my problem, and once I've closed the Autocad the problem had returned.
Does anyone have any solution to it?? I don't get why this is happening because it was working fine until today. It's annoying.
    I have a mid 2012 13-inch Macbook Pro with an i5, 4GB RAM and 256GB Samsung 840 Evo SSD running OS X 10.9.4.

It's a known issue with AutoDesk applications. I don't know what causes it.

  • Pinch to home on ios 7 - laggy animation?

    Hi Guys,
Just updated to IOS7 on my iPad 4 and have noticed that the pinch to home gesture animation has a lag just before fully retuning to the home screen.
I use this gesture all the time and now the animation is no longer as smooth as IOS 6. I've tried this with 'Reduce Motion' on as well but it's the same..
The animation is fine however if I use the home button - anyone else noticed this?

Since upgrading to Mavericks the animations I make within Mac Grapher lose the vast majority of their colour.  When I used Snow Leopard the animations I made within Grapher were beautiful-  with Mavericks the animations are horrible and unusable, lacking colour and resolution.  Is there any way I can export full quality graph animations or do I have to downgrade back to Snow Leopard. (again)?  It also takes A LOT longer to generate the poor quality animations in Mavericks.

I have been having MAJOR problems with outlook office Mac 2011 and Mavericks (Macbook Pro Retina early 2013).
The issue seems to be intermittent with POP and IMAP email accounts, and I suspect it may be related to the keyring and outlook mac 2011 interactions with the keyring.
Intermittently my POP and IMAP accounts refuse to work, and I get asked to re-enter the password (and did I want to save it in the keyring) when I already did that.
A suggestion over on the Microsoft Office Mac forum was to delete the account and re-enter it (credentials for the POP and IMAP) into Outlook.  Did that, and still having intermittent issues.
This is causing be considerable GRIEF as I rely on these email accounts for time critical business issues, and failing to get emails is a disaster for us!
Word, Excel and PowerPoint all appear to be behaving ok under Mavericks so far, but Outlook is proving to be quite difficult!!!
    Anyone else with these experiences???
    Apple Support are you watching???
    Thanks, IanB

  • Scrolling is really laggy and slow

For a week or so I've noticed that my scrolling is really slow and laggy on some sites. A site most often visited that makes my scrolling really slow is youtube. Has anyone found a solution to fix this? Was it maybe due to an update?

    Hello everyone!
User Hakaitz of the Apple Support Communities has worked out a solution, that has helped me getting my old Mac performance back. It involves installing the graphics drivers from Snow Leopard in Lion.
This performance bug really annoyed me to no ends... Here's what user Hakaitz says in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3198002?start=45&tstart=0:
There is a fix for this problem.
I just load with kext helper, the Snow Leopard Kexts from version 10.6.2 for the Radeon.
End of stutters on laggy animations on any version of lion. Works on 7.1 and 8.1 imacs (at least).
    Here the fix:
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=11INQM1D
How to use ONLY RADEON 2600 USERS:
    execute kext helper
drag and drop this files ONLY:
    ATIFramebuffer.kext
    ATISupport.kext
    ATI2600Controller.kext
put your admin password and click on "easy install". I tooks a while to do the work. When finished, reboot (the kext helper aaaaalways hangs, its normal.
After that reboot your computer wont stutter anymore.
    Hope it helps!

  • Tap click dragging cancel now has an animation.. that lags...

enable tap to click, then double tap the desktop and drag as you would in leopard. this creates a shaded box. now tap the desktop again. cool a new animation. oh wait, it has a 1 second lag time...
were these done on purpose or accidental? i'm starting to wonder if SL was really ready to be released, or if apple was worried about windows 7 and rushed to release it before microsoft's new OS.
there are too many problems in SL for this to be a REAL release. so many complaints on driver problems, laggy animations, the OS actually slowing things down a bit, etc.

Hmm, looking at your system specs, I think I see why you're having lag problems.
Personally, I have a top of line MacBook 2.0 GHz Core Duo with 2 GB of RAM, and a 250 GB hard drive. Yes, it's over three years old, but I think your problem is that your computer isn't black polycarbonate. Mine is. Yours is aluminum. It probably needs to be taken to an Apple Store to get recycled.
No serious lagging here, and definitely not with the so-called animation of a fading selection box. If there is ever a slight stutter with Spaces or Exposé, it's usually only the first time it's used and it clears up afterwards, and that's more a matter of catching the system off guard when it sitting there thinking it was about to go to sleep. Spaces and Exposé seem to be doing a lot more now and yet without stuttering or jumping too quickly.
In fact, it seems like everything has gotten smoother and faster for me since the 10.6 upgrade. It even seems like my LCD screen has been replaced with something better. Kind of makes this Intel GMA 950 built-in graphics with 64 MB of shared memory seem quite nice after all. I feel like my computer has been replaced with a new model. But, obviously, not with a unibody model. Naaah nah nah naaah nah! :-p
Hope things smooth out for you. If they don't, I might consider a trade… Though, I'm kind of attached to this one now that it's gotten so much faster and smoother.
Oh! Hey! I just remembered something. Are you holding down the shift key? That can cause certain activities to move in slow motion, on purpose. Great for keynote demos, but I'm not sure why they left it in except maybe to show it off to PC users. Though, that doesn't seem to affect the fading selection box.
Oh, another tip: you don't have to wait for the selection box to fade before doing something else. It's not stopping you. Not that I can test that out myself, since my system is working so much better, but I'm guessing that it doesn't prevent you from doing something else.
Oh, but karma is probably going to get me on this one, and it likely won't wait for another lifetime. Yep, 10.6.1 is probably going to reverse the matter, and then you're computer will be fine and mine will screaming out for replacement. Scary. I guess I better enjoy it while I can. Heh heh heh.

  • Should I return my new 13" rMBP

    Hello everyone
Recently my new Macbook arrived (my first MacBook ever!) and I'm really getting paranoid about the other thread that's up where people complain about the freeze issue.
I had finally saved up the money so I could afford myself a MacBook because for university I want my laptop to be durable and stable with good support from the manufacturer and that's the reason I chose an Apple product.
Now I haven't experienced this issue myself except for the laggy animation transitions and such but I've thinking to myself that nearly all products are built from the same hardware so I'm basically just sitting on a time bomb? Eventually is has to happen to me as well, right?
Next week I have some finals that require me to bring my laptop with me. I'm very paranoid that it might happen when I'm taking my finals. When I placed my order at Apple's online store I thought to myself "Finally a laptop that won't bring me countless of headaches" but I haven't felt comfortable when using my laptop because of the fact that others have this issue and I more or less convinced myself that it's a time bomb.
Do you guys think I should return it? And if so, how do I return it if I bought it at Apple's online store.
I really want to keep my laptop, but I don't want to take any risks because it's a lot of money for me.
    Thanks in advance

That's probably true. However someone just suggested me to open my console in order to make sure if I have it or not. Seems that my console is full of errors (the one mentioned in the thread).
Yet my keyboard and trackpad were always working, seems even more confusing now.

  • Problems with scrolling and Mission Control

    I have this problem:
When scrolling down any page, the letters will blur at the top of the screen and not the bottom.
When swiping acrross pages in the launchpad, it occasionaly freezes half way between the two.
When I swipe up with four fingers to access mission control, the screen becomes very sluggish. Swiping back down (or clicking a tab) is even worse, causing slow "laggy" animations.

  • IPhone 6 Plus Keeps Crashing  PLEASE HELP!

I am a huge Apple fan, so I ask this question wishing and hoping my iPhone 6 Plus would just perform the way I know it should be.
Since restoring from my old iPhone 5S backup onto my 6 Plus 128GB (AT&T) running iOS 8.0, my 6 Plus is laggy (animations are very slow and stutter), freezy (after hitting "done" it often freezes for a good five seconds before registering the click), buggy (the keyboard sometimes doesn't appear at all, the "halos" around the folders on the home screen sometimes appear and sometimes don't, seems totally arbitrary), and crashy (whenever doing certain tasks like fast app switching, trying to change wallpaper, and others, the phone crashes, turns off the radios, then shows the Apple screen before rebooting).  The crashing is happening once every five to ten minutes, making the phone VERY FRUSTRATING TO USE.
I have tried manually restarting the phone, HOME + SLEEP reset to the Apple screen, and restoring again...My next step is a factory reset and manual reinstallation of all my apps again, which is making me sick just thinking about it...
All of these things scream SOFTWARE to me, but what do I know...is anyone else experiencing these issues on the 6 Plus?  Should I just be waiting for an OS update, or did I just get a lemon phone?  As I said, I love Apple, and this is not a post to flame (so please save your "Go buy an Android" for someone who cares).  I just want my shiny new phone to work!!!  Any help is appreciated.

Im also having the same issues. I have a 6 Plus 128GB.
Sometimes it works for hours without issue. Sometimes it crashes apps (both Apples and third parties) at launch. Sometimes I get a blue screen. Sometimes a red screen. Sometimes the phone just restarts with the Apple logo and takes a while to come back again.
Originally I restored from my iPhone 5S iCloud backup. Last night I put it in recovery mode and set it up as a new phone. Even before I started downloading third party apps it crashed once.
Could this be a hardware issue or does it sound more like software?
If I recall correctly my 5S (or maybe it was my 5?) also had random restarts, the first few months and then they just stopped. Did that happen to anyone else or am I making it up?
I can live with the issues for a few weeks until a software update comes along (if its something that other people are experiencing and could be fixed with a software update). If you think its hardware then I want to start moving to get a replacement from Apple/ATT ASAP.

  • IPad 1 iOS5 Speed

    Hi all,
Does iOS 5 slow down the iPad 1 in the same way that the original iPhone 3G became unbearably slow after the iOS 4 upgrade? As it's near enough impossible to rollback the upgrade, I want to be sure first!
    Thanks.
    Marc

The people saying iOS 5 runs fine on the first generation iPad are morons. Read below
iOS 5 is a slow, worthless piece of crap on the first generation iPad. It makes me want to sell my iPad to a third party (So apple will not profit from the value of the device), and nevere buy an additional apple product.
iOS 5 has the following problems for iPad 1 users:
    - Gameplay is impossible with the upgrade, often frame by frame (simcity, gangstar).
    - Opening applications has a laggy animation
    - closing applications "
    - safari browising is crap
Apple needs to address the iOS 5 iPad issues before they begin to loose loyal customers. if you are reading this, and have not already updated. DO NOT DO IT.
I have downgraded my device to iOS 4.2.1 (because I saved the SHSH blob). I suggest everybody to do the same. Apple purposfully made iOS 4.3 and above slow on the 1st generation iPad to discourage use of the older device and encourage use of the newer device. ***** move, ***** move.
