LAN cable with MBP

Hi every one, i have an EDIMAX wireless router and modem at home of a speed of 1.5 mbps ADSL at home, works ok with my MBP after some issues (i think every one knows what i'm talking about), after the last update it started to give me a hard time but after updating the last batch of APEX and AP it's ok now, my question is, how to secure my router by means of even if some one hooked there PCs to my router using LAN cables can't get access ? i'm using EDIMAX (AR-7064g+A). thanks in advance.

The question of keeping the kids safe is not so much one of the network settings as the use of Parental Controls. This is another feature that can be accessed via the System Preferences panel. It needs a separate user account for your little ones (that will keep them away from your files as well) and then can be fine-tuned. Time-Limits in that panel seems to provide exactly what you want while Content has the access to the internet restrictions. Mind you, if they are bright (see below), they may well find a way past this eventually, so it is worth checking the logs from time to time.
I guess from looking at your reply to Craig Brady, it is your kids who may be plugging in another computer (or accessing via your computer) using the LAN cables. As Craig says, there is not much that can be done with the setup you have now. Perhaps some more information about machine availability might be useful.

  • Guide to get internet via LAN cable With WRE54G

    Hello Guys!
Sorry for my very bad English!
I found a way to get internet through the LAN cable on the WRE54G.
First of all I was thinking; isn't t very weird that I can connect to my standard gateway using the LAN connection of the WRE but not being able to connect to google?.. The answer is quite simple; If i Looked at my LAN settings on my PC there was no DNS server configured.
I opened the standard gateway (192.168.2.1) and looked for the IP of the DNS server.
I opened the config panel of my LAN connection and set my IP to 192.168.2.40, Subnetmask 255.255.255.0, standard gateway 192.168.2.1 and DNS server; the adress that I found on the page of the standard gateway (you can find it as well as you connect to your router directly in the details tab of your connection)...
You really need to set the IP and DNS server manually because DHCP doesn't work quite well on the WRE...
Now you can use the WRE as a WLAN to LAN receiver.
I also found a way to connect the WRE to a second router.
Might be handy if you want to give a wired LAN party on a second router but you are not able to make a wired link between the first and the second router and you really want to add an internet connection to it, just ask!

I have a setup that receives the WiFi signal from a distant router, and I wish to set up another "G" router at this end.  Can you tell me how to connect the WR54G to a WRT54G router?
    Bob

  • Can i get an adapter so i can hook up my cp1215 with a lan cable instead using the usb cable?

I am trying to hook up my printer to my wireless router using a lan cable. Is there an adapter or other method to use?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Based on its specs, it ONLY has USB connection and no slot for a NIC therefore you can use USB wireless print server to connect it wirelessly.
    Here are some of them:

Instructions and driver should come with the box.

  • FM2-A55M-E33 won't boot if LAN cable fitted, black screen with 99 in rh corner

Just bought a new Zoostorm 7872-1212/A computer, which has the MSI FM2-A55M-E33 motherboard.
I installed and registered Windows 7, and download all updates etc without any problems last night.
Started it up this morning, and it didn't post.
All I had was a black screen, with 99 in the bottom right corner.
Switched off, then tried again, still no joy.
Removed all cables, re-fitted just mouse, keyboard and monitor, and it started.
Powered of and refitted LAN cable.
Powered on - black screen and 99.
Powered off, bought new LAN cable, fitted it into another port on my router, powered up, black screen and 99.
Thinking it's a BIOS setting, opened BIOS
Set Sata drive as 1st drive, DVD as 2nd and disabled all other drives
Set wake up events to BIOS, RTC disabled, all other events on
    Saved and powered of
Started up, and still back screen and 99
    Anybody got thoughts?

When using a LAN cable, can you connect to the internet using other software (such as download managers, other browsers, IM clients, update software...)?

  • IMac slows down wifi/LAN cable connection

    Hello,
I came across a quiet unique and annoying problem, that I have not seen being discussed so far.
I spend the last 3 weeks trying to solve my internet/wifi connection following all kinds of posts here.
Problem: Wifi/Lan internet connection is slow (less than 0.8mbit/s)
Problem only appears when I login with an iMac via wifi OR lag cable
    iMac, 2011 27`` Mac OS 10.7.5
    Background:
I have a 20mbit/s internet connection with my provider. works fine on iPad, iPhone, appleTV HTC one mini, etc… BUT as soon, as I login with my iMac, the internet connection slows down to less than 1 mbit/s
    I have tried following solutions:
    - live box (router) was exchanged and is brand new
    - security settings on router changes (wpa2 etc)
    - all channels on router tested from 1-13
    - keychain saved passwords for Wifi and router deleted, PRAM reset
    - renewed lease of connected devices (no IP conflict)
    - shut down wifi on iMac - connection with all devices great, as soon as i switch wifi on, all devices lose their high speed connection and go down to less than 1mbit/s
    - connected iMac via LAN cable: same problem, all speed is lost
    - iMac is not in the network - speed is great
    - connected iMac via time capsule wifi, same problem. connected iMac via netgear extender, same problem
also, if I open network preferences and start the "assist me" app and run diagnostics, all dots are green except the ISP and server, bit most of the time they switch to green immediately, but connection is still slow.
Reception bar is on "3", so signal strength is no problem, and I´d like to emphasize that this is also happening on LAN cable. and again, if the iMac is disconnected from wifi AND / OR LAN, all other devices work fine.
Would love to hear your thoughts!
    Thanks!

Although I have been on Mac OS for a while now, I have never had to troubleshoot faulty network in the mac itself.
OSX does apparently have a safe mode boot..
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
Try that.. as that gives you the same thing as windows with all the extras left out, so you get a basic operating system only and you can see if the problem still exists.. if it does.. I would simply bite the bullet.. wipe the Mac.. reinstall the OS and then carefully reinstall your applications from original disks/downloads and move your operating files back .. but start a different user on the computer and copy back the min you need to get working again.
If the problem still happens even in safe mode boot then do a hardware test.. because it is possible something has actually failed at the hardware level.

  • Security:  WiFi vs. LAN Cable

With an iMac connected to a Time Capsule via a LAN cable, and the WiFi (Airport) selected "Off" in the iMac, what, if any, data is being broadcast over the Time Capsule's WiFi frequency?  I've always assumed that a hard-wire connection bypasses the Time Capsule's WiFi component.  Therefore, it would seem that a cable connection should be more secure than a WiFi connection.  Is this true?  Or, does a Time Capsule transmit "duplicate" data over the WiFi, even with WiFi/Airport is turned off at the computer?
Is there a procedure by which the Time Capsule's WiFi capability can be turned off?
    Cheers........

No data on the LAN link will be retransmitted on the wifi link unless the TC is repeater.
You turn off the wireless by going to the wireless tab and selecting wireless mode.. off. This is in the airport utility.
And you are quite wrong to think wireless is a security hazard on the TC or any wireless.. as long as you follow the rules..
Set wireless security to wpa2 Personal and set a password that is totally random mix of upper and lower case alphanumeric (although a mixed sentence is easier to remember). Make it 30 characters long if you are paranoid.
Reports of hacking of wireless are in specific lab conditions.. yes, it will become vunerable when super quantum computers become available.. we still have a few years to go.. and by then the wireless security method will also improve.
The security hazard of the TC is the reset button.
Anybody with physical access to the reset can press it for one second and have full access to your files for 5min.. without altering settings and without any warning to a person logging in later.. since apple removed all logging and SNMP from the TC.

  • I want to force lan cable plugin during login process on 802.1x computer only weird client

    Hi
I Configured Wired and computer only  802.1x authentications on all my switch and client on my network  ,It works without any problem .
I have user logon script to change local administrator password each time they log on ,I recently find out they boot with light cd and change the administrator password and unplug the lan cable boot the system and login with new administrator password after
that they plug lan cable , as they computer account is valid in active directory they are authorized and access the LAN .
they bypass some group policy by this way,
how can I force 802.1x wired client computer to plug lan cable during boot and login process in order to prevent bypass user login group policy  ?
I want to force lan cable plugin during login process on 802.1x computer only weird client?

    Hello,
you can disable CD/USB with GPO settings to prevent the use from it.
And for the change from the local admin password you should consider that the CEO of the company should make clear policies so users can legally be punished if they don't work with the company rules.
You can manage lot of settings with scripts etc. BUT there is a time where the CEO is responsible about rules.

  • Traveling with MBP to foreign countries

    Hello!
This weekend I'm planning on going to Korea where they use 240VAC. I bought a converter that converts 220/240 VAC foreign electricty to standard US 110/120 VAC. I was wondering if this would do the job or I would need something else.

Yes, you don't need the converter - so if you don't need it for anything else, return it and get your money back. The MBP Power adapter is auto switching.
All you will need is an ac cable with a "figure of 8 connection" (the bit that goes into the adapter) the same as you received in the box with your MBP, but with a Korean plug. You should be able to pick one up in Korea for a couple of dollars.
    Best of luck.

  • Using Time Capsule without lan cable

The new router issued by my ISP is without ethernet connection. Can I use my time capsule to share the internet connection instead of the router directly, without lan cable?

The Time Capsule can do what you want if it connects to a wireless signal produced by another Apple wireless router, but it would not be comatible with a 3rd party wireless router.
You might want to get with your ISP and ask them if they have another router available with industry standard things....like an Ethernet port.

  • Satellite A20-S103: LAN cable disconnected

    hi
i cannot get access to my LAN or internet.
I'm using a Satellite A20-S103 with a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC.
When I connect the Lan cable to the LAN port, appears the message "LAN cable disconnected".
The same message appears using de ConfigFree-Connectivity Doctor.
I changed several cables, used cables that worked on others computers and the message still there and no access to the router/modem.
The LEDs near the LAN port are not lightning (neither orange or green, none)
I have already read the posts here in the forum (and in others forums) and i cannot make the ethernet card work.
Do you think the problem is with the card or the OS.
    Can you help me?
    Sorry for my English

Check firstly if the LAN card was recognized in the device manager.
Under Network Adapters you should see the LAN card.
If there is an yellow exclamation mark near the LAN card then either the driver was not installed correctly or there is another serious error.
In first case I would recommend removing the LAN card from the device manager and after new reboot you should try to reinstall the driver downloaded from the Toshiba page!
Furthermore you should set the TCP/IP settings to automatic because the router assigns the IP address automatically.
Please check this and report the results
    Good luck

  • [Solved]:How to Manage 2 LAN cards with WICD

    Hi all,
I have recently added an additional lan card to my system. Its configured and runs fine.
However the concern is that I use WICD to manage my broadband internet connection through LAN1 and now I want to use LAN2 to connect to Linux/Win client laptop/desktop to share data and internet connection but WICD can manage one interface at a time and with WICD enabled I cant use Arch network daemon(as per wicd archwiki)... how to manage two cards with WICD enabled??
    Thanks in advance.

Hi and thankls ngoonee, but then I rather use arch network than netcfg coz its not gui, and yep its not possible with wicd to manage two different lan cards simultaneously, tried and tested everything.Anyways i used wicd only coz it showed icon in sys tray(the lan cable keeps movin a lot so icons are really handy to make out if cable is connected or not). Well the only solution I could find is to manage it via arch network daemon, editing rc.conf and stuff...btw wen on my quest I found this archassistant tool, and its quite handy to 'manage' arch system including netcfg.
But m curious though, what more netcfg has to offer than that to default network daemon?
    Thanks in advance
    Cheers.

  • WAN/LAN cables

This is more or a just curious question.  The other night we were having Internet issues.  They ended up sending us out a new router.  The next day it was all fine, so I'm thinking it might not have been a router problem.
Anyway the new one came and I was just looking over the installation book and realized that we have a yellow (LAN) cable from the phone jack to the WAN port on the router.   I switched it but it has probably been like that for years.  I can't imagine we switched it, although a few years ago we had router trouble, so maybe we did by accident.
my question is just will this make a difference in hoe things run?  We weren't  having trouble before, so just curious.
    thanks

    Mayhem1976 wrote:
I switched the yellow cable (the book says this is for the LAN port)  With the white cable (for the WAN port).   So we have the white cable going from the phone jack to the WAN port.   We only have a laptop, so we never have a computer hooked to the router anymore.
What exactly is the "phone jack" connected to?
Typically a fios router is connected to the ONT via coax though it is possible to ask for an ethernet connection in which case the ONT will be connected to the router via an ethernet cable which has 4 pairs in it - i.e.8 wires.  If this is run thru building wiring it will be a cat5 or cat6 cable that will terminate at both ends in a rj45 jack that has 8 connectors that will be wired in a specific crossover pattern.
A phone jack is typically wired using cat3 cable that normally are terminated in rj11 connectors straight through.
As your yellow and white cables both fit the socket I would assume they are exactly the same using rj45 connectors - you can check this by looking at the cable where the wiring category will be stamped on it..  If you are having issues I would suspect the in house wiring but the only way to test that run is by using an ethernet port/cable tester.  There are many of them out there, not particularly cheap, I use a TS031A multi quick check from Black Box
