LAN connection causes delay when booting

i have connected my ADSL modem to the LAN jack from the onboard motherboard ethernet card. but now, when i boot into windows i get a huge delay right after the administrator screen and before the icons and taskbar are loaded. why?
it must be the LAN connection, because when i disable it, everything is back to normal. im really concerned about this because i had optimized my boot up time really good. now that delay (all you can see is the pointer and hear the HDD working) takes about 10-15 seconds, which is as long as the whole boot up process took me before.
can anyone help? maybe i have to disable a service or anything like that?

It's probably taking a while to get an IP...If you could set it up with a static IP you may notice the delay being shorter or going away alltogether.  It works for me.

Reset the PRAM > About NVRAM and PRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

  • Annoying Delay when booting up SATA drive with KT6V

OK, I've almost given up on Via SATA after reading the myriad of troubles everyone else is having, but here's my issue:
I've installed Windows XP onto a Seagate 120GB SATA drive. When I boot up, SOME applications (in particular, Control Panel and any app running off of a CD) won't fire up when I double click on them. Going to the Task Manager, I can see that the application is in the Processes list. There is no drive activity. If I wait a few minutes, the applications load and run just fine. The irritating thing is that some apps open up just fine. Internet Explorer has never had a problem opening (although Live Update has, go figure).
I'm running an Athlon 2500+ on a KT6V-LSR with a Radeon 9500 Pro, 512MB PC2700, and a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz Sound card. I have a Liteon CDR and a separate DVD player. The only Hard drive in the machine is the Seagate SATA 120GB.
If anyone has a fix for this delay, please do tell.

Or perhaps you are running Core Center, as has being said a lot of times that it uses more than 90% of CPU resources....BTW you could tell us something about the P.Su.: its brand and AMPS. it gives to 3.3v. 5v. and 12v.

  • Delay when booting. First flashing folder with ?, then happy Mac...

    Hi,
I recently tried to install ubuntu on my old CRT iMac DV model, but everything went miserable wrong so I tried to reinstall OS9 from my Install disc and again that didn't work either. After some helpful assistance from this forum I figured out that it was either the install disc (scratched) or the PRAM battery.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, the Apple Tech Service Centre kindly burnt me a new copy of my install disc adn supplied me with a new battery. I ahve successfully installed OS 9.2.2 but when I boot the iMac I get a flashing folder at first with a "?" sign and then after 10-20 seconds it changes to a happy Mac icon adn starts to boot.
Has anyone got any idea what is happening and is it something I should be concerned about?
    Cheers
    Manuel
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   also have iMac G3 OS 9.0.4

Hi, CMNG. Your Mac's behavior suggests that there is no startup disk designated in the Startup Disk control panel, so the Mac is taking extra time scanning all possible locations and busses for a potential startup volume before resorting to the only one that turns up. Open that control panel, select your hard drive, close the control panel, and the problem should be gone the next time you restart.

  • Can't connect to LAN when booting MBP from external drive?

In an effort to always work in my computer environment, I backup my Mac Pro main drive to an external firewire drive, plug in to my new Macbook Pro 2.9 and option start off this drive. Result is I'm working off the last backup of my main Mac Pro drive so all my apps, stored mail, etc, is alive and well. I merely track any changes and new files and copy them over or use DropBox to get them on to my Main Mac Pro, my main computer.
Problem is, when booting off my external drive running Lion 10.7.5, my MBP's network won't turn on or recognize my home LAN. Then if I restart off just the MBP drive, it does connet to my LAN automatically.
Could the problem be that since my MBP was set up for Mount Lion, that it won't fully work with a drive with a Lion OS on it? I thought perhaps I had to turn on Airport when on my external Lion drive, since I don't have that turned on on my Mac Pro which uses ethernet. Can't figure this one out. The MBP must have airport as I'm on it now but booted off the internal ML OSX drive.
    Thx,
    Steven

No not at all. You should have access to your LAN from any version of OS X that is set up correctly. It's still using the same hardware and should be loading the same drivers for that hardware and YES you may have to actually turn on the Airport card.

  • Cannot re-boot after enabling K8T Neo LAN Connection

I've tried to enable the K8T Neo LAN controller in BIOS so that I can connect a Wireless Router to my PC. However, when I do this, the PC will not boot and I have to disable the LAN controller.
On booting-up the BIOS seems to be looking for an ethernet controller and a message states that either the device is not plugged in or the cable is faulty ! Why should enabling the onboard LAN controller affect the device the BIOS boots from ?
Can I plug a Wireless Router directly into the RJ45 LAN connection on the K8T Neo and if so, how ?
    Thankyou for any helpful advice

Check to make sure you are not set to boot from network. Unfortunately I can't remember the exact name or where it is located, but it may help.

as you say: a WIRELESS router is WIRELESS, how could you plugin a cable from a wireles router. or does it also have rj45 conectors?
if you want to use the wirreles function, you will need to buy a wirrles lan adapter (usb) for your pc
I have never seen a wireless router without rj45 connectors. (WAP yes, router no).

  • Problem when Nano connected to USB at Boot for PC

I have a Nano 4GB than for some strange reason, when plugged into a USB port (2.0), frequently causes the computer to either delay the boot process (~ 1 min+) or (rarely) cause the computer to reboot during the device initialization process. If I unplug the iPod, the problem goes away. The Event Viewer is clean. The computer is otherwise wicked fast, so the delay is quite noticable.
I am using a dock instead of the straight plug but my understanding is that the dock is passive.
Any thoughts as to what might cause this???
    Fuzzylogik

Check your computer's BIOS settings and look at the boot order.
It might be trying to boot your machine from the iPod, as it may be seeing it as an external USB hard drive.
Many new machines can boot from USB devices now.

  • Pantech UM290 doesn't connect to internet when my LAN is on

I use the Pantech UM290 to connect to the internet (travel between 2 different locations).  When I have my LAN turned on (no internet connection) which I use to connect to my printer (in another room) I can't connect to internet.  Pantech says it's connected but looks like my computer is using LAN 1st so internet connection.  How can I change priority so Pantech is always 1st not my LAN for internet access?

Bob,  I am having the same problem with my UML290: I can't get my computer running Win 7 Ultimate to support both a LAN connection and the UML290 connection simultaneously.  When the Pantech modem is connected the LAN shuts down and I can't access my printer or use a WiFi modem to share connections with Kindels and Laptops around the house.  I would connect the UML290 through a standalone Wireless N router running DD-WRT variant but can't get that to work either.  I can get it to recognize the Pantech but needs User ID and Password which is baked into the software and can't be looked up directly.  Verizon needs to address this situation... soon!

  • Disable WLAN when LAN connected - how do I do?

    Hi,
We are in the process of migrating from HP notebooks to Lenovo. We used to set a BIOS setting called "LAN/WLAN Switch" in the HP notebooks, which makes the WLAN to disable when the LAN cable is plugged in or the pc is docked
Where do I find a similar setting in Lenovo notebooks?
We need it because LAN and WLAN is on separate subnets, and Windows XP has trouble working with both nets at the same time. Users compalins about loss of network connectivity if both nets are enabled at the same time.
There may be a way to configure LAN/WLAN-switching in the Lenovo software, but we prefer to use the build in WLAN functionality in Windows, not using Access Connection or similar third party WLAN software. Our experience shows that uses often have difficulties finding out how to use third party WLAN software when traveling and need to connect to other WLAN's. The build in Windows WLAN software has the advantage that it is always the same, no matter which brand or model of pc they are using.

Check out Wireless AutoSwitch at http://www.wirelessautoswitch.com it does what you are asking.
    What is Wireless AutoSwitch?
Wireless AutoSwitch runs as a service and will automatically disable your wireless card when you connect to a LAN (hard wire) connection, and re-enable the wireless card when there is no LAN connection. This ensures that you are always using the fastest connection for network traffic. In the office this helps reduce redundant network connections, while still helping your employees seamlessly transfer from wired to wireless network connections.
For offices that are wireless security conscious this application makes sure the laptop's wireless card is off when the user is wired into your network, preventing bridged connections and preventing someone from the outside hacking your network through a laptop's wireless card.

  • Hang of RMI call when LAN connection removed

I have a client server application with comms using RMI across a TCP/IP LAN. We are in test at the moment and one of the tests is to ensure that when the LAN connection is removed, the client application handles it correctly.
We have discovered that if we pull the LAN whilst an RMI call is in progress, the call never returns, even if we subsequently plug the LAN back in. Why should this be? I would have expected a RemoteException as soon as I pull the LAN out. How come the thread gets deadlocked?
Note that we are running JRE 1.2 on the client (they are soon to be updated but it's 1400 remote, unattended sites so it's an expensive process to update to a recent JRE).
    Thanks
    Mat

Thanks ejp - couple of dollars coming your way. Be a couple more if you (or anyone else) can help further.
Firstly, how would I set this property in the code?
Secondly, would it be set in the client or the factory (yes we do have one)? If it's in the factory, will that help me from the client side (that's where I need it to work). I looked up the responseTimeout property and it looks like this is more for the server to close incoming connections. The problem I have is on the client side - I need the client (i.e. that is making the RMI call via an exported remote object) to be able to kill off a call that has going too long (for instance because it can't detect the closed TCP connection).
Maybe I've misunderstood the documentation I've found but that's how I read it.
    Thanks again!

when booting up, the bluetooth connects and disconnects with my trackpad 3 to 4 times and then i get a gray sheet that drops down from the top to bottom of the desktop then a box in the center that tells me to use the power button to do a forced shutdown. wireless keyboard connects with no problem. went to the apple store and they replaced the bluetooth card. still have the same problem. removed the batteries from the trackpad, strted up and no problem connecting with wireless mouse and keyboard. anyone else experience this?

This could be a software/state problem or a hardware problem.  Here are steps to resolve the former.

I have 2 mac powerbook, connected through airport for the 1st, and ethernet for the 2nd. I want the second to automatically connect the first powerbook (on a specific share point, I use this software) when booting.
I have only found the manual way, which works perfectly...
But as a "no computing" guy will use the second powerbook, I need this automatic connection...
I guess it should be easy.. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated

  • Lan connectivity Issue on autonomous AP with throttles

              Hello,
I encounter a strange problem on several AP 1242 in version 12.4(25d)JA1 of a customer :
He has 10 autonomous AP covering a factory and is using them for laptop connectivity and TOIP with mainly 7921 Cisco Wifi Phones.
The phones are configured to use only 802.11a.
The APs loose LAN connectivity randomly and therefore the clients don't work anymore.
The AP are connected on a 2960 and a 3560 wich are in turn connected on a 3750 wich route the trafic.
After checking spanning-tree no loops are present.
When I check the counters on the AP involved I see the "trhottles" and "ignored" counters incrementing on the fa0 link of the AP impacted wich mean I think it can't handle the incoming traffic. This incoming traffic seems not to be too big however. I can see drops on the switch interface connecting the AP.
There is a lot of roaming on the AP due to people walking in the factory with their wifi phones.
Here is a view of the fa0 counters :

Does someone ever experienced a similar problem ?
When I shut radio interfaces they're is no more problems on the LAN. Can this be an overlapping coverage issue ?
Can someone please give me advices on how to troubleshoot this issue ?
Thank you in advance as I'm a bit stuck.
    Best Regards,

         Hi Scott,
    Thanks for your reply.
Do you think this can be the origin of the issue my customer encounters or is it only to be standard ? As this change will have to be made on all clients, if there is a chance it solves the problem I will do it ASAP, if not I will delay it in a less busy period :-)
Can the constant roaming associations and dissasociations overload the AP and make it stop responding on the LAN or is it only a throuhput problem ?
Thanks in advance for your answer.
