Landing on page 1 of chapter 1 is impossible in iBooks Author
I am a veteran iOS programmer, new to iBooks.
We have now finished two iBooks and one Kindle book.
Today I called Apple support because I could not figure out how to get iBooks Author to set my iBook to land on page 1 of my iBooks.
In Kindle, this is easy.
Apparently, inexplicably, in iBooks this is impossible. This is not technically difficult, but apparently Apple doesn't want to let us do this!
We are doing children's books. We want them to be able to launch their iBook and see page 1 of chapter 1. They expect this, it's user friendly behavior.
No problem in Kindle, it's the default.
In iBooks, it is impossible!
Apple Tech said "sorrry, no help".
We are not going to do our valuable in print books in iBooks until Apple bothers to give us better abilities in iBooks Author. There is a posted HTML fix to this online, but Apple does not allow us to modify our iBooks HTML code.
Apple should provide first-rate software for iBooks if it expects to compete successfully with Amazon. Apple seems to be devoting little attention to iBooks Author capabiltities. Check out Adobe Photoshop for world class features.
Apple iBooks store open all books from the cover image in the iBooks app - it then opens the introduction image or video, then manually the reader/viewer can swipe through the book using the TOC thumbs.
Whatever other publishers do or options make possible - two things needs to be taken into consideration.
1. iBooksAuthor produces an hybrid, part book part "app" - Apple create the software and systems right through to getting it into the iBooks store - free of charge.
2. Apple set their system and supplu you free software to do it, so you have to make a choice, if it suits you use what is made available - if its does not suite you, opt out and stay with those who do what you want to do.
You can use feedback to make your opinion heard, but unless it is.... what you have is what is available.
This is not technically difficult, but apparently Apple doesn't want to let us do this!
It is their software, therefore they can dictate how it is used.
This is not technically difficult, but apparently Apple doesn't want to let us do this!
But did not bother to read the guidline before starting and when you previewed your book, you saw ho wit was presented. Did you add a video or image in teh introduction...knowing its shown after the cover page ?
Apple should provide first-rate software for iBooks if it expects to compete successfully with Amazon.
I dont know how Apple compares to Amazon, but my guess i s that Apple dont give two hoots for what Amazon are doing..... Apple concentrate on doing what is right for them
Amazon do not supply free software or allow any single person with an idea to create an interactive book and put it in the iBooks store for free and without any payment whatever to Apple, granted they take 30% from a paid book - but 30% of $1,49 is hardly going to drive up their share price is it?
Apple seems to be devoting little attention to iBooks Author capabiltities. Check out Adobe Photoshop for world class features.
1. Apple is free software
2. Photoshop does not really make books, inDesign does... and both cost around $600 + PA with their Creative Cloud fees.
What amazes me is you never thought to check everything out before committing your time to making teh two iBooks.
There are litterally tens of thousands of users of IBooks Author creating and uploading books and all are quite happy with the software and the systems.
Its basically your choice on what you do and how you do it. But lambasting Apple simply because it does not do what you failed to check if it could do... seems pointless - especailly as Apple do not monitor these USER groups.

Does anyone know how to add a preface page at the beginning of the book in ibooks author once the book is written? No matter how I try to add a Preface page, it goes to the end of the book.
Thanks. I've tried this and apparently the template I'm using is one of those where it doesn't work. I've tried dragging it as well as cutting a pasting but it always travels back to the end of the book. Maybe I can try changing the template temporarily, move the preface page, and then convert back to the original template. I'll experiment a little.

Formatting lost importing Pages to iBooks Author
I having a problem importing a text file from Pages '09 to iBooks Author maintaining some formatting.
My Pages document has some text in bold and some in bold and italics in addition to normal text. Everything is in Arial font in Pages.
When I import the document into iBooks Author all the bold italic text shows up as normal text. About 75% of the bold only text shows up as bold and the rest as normal. When the bold words are in the middle of other text, the bold format is maintained. When the bold text is at the start of a line it shows up as bold or normal after the import.
Any help would be appreciated.Check the styles in use on the Pages side versus the styles applied on the iBA side....

Flip pages on ibook author!!
Hi apple world
I was searching a lot on the internet to find a tutorial of how to make the pages flip? I can't believe that ibook author doesn't have this feature, if anyone know how to do that pleeeeease tell me.
My regards,

How to have variable headers on different pages of a chapter?
Hello,
(Running FrameMaker 8 on Windows XP.) I'm trying to figure out how to set up a system variable to use to construct a running header in the Master pages of a chapter. I would like the chapter to have more than just two header variants (one for left-hand pages and one for the right). I want the header to reflect conditions that are local to the page being displayed.
First, here is the basic structure of the chapter:
Chapter Heading
Heading 1
Heading 2
blah blah
Heading 2
blah blah
Heading 2
blah blah
Heading 1
Introductory text (several pages of body text and lower-level headers)...
Heading 2
etc
On any given page, I want the running header to display the text of the most recent Heading 2 title to be used. However, if a new Heading 1 title was used more recently than the most recent Heading 2, and there is no text of type Heading 2 on that page, then I want the running header to display the text of the most recent Heading 1 title.
For example, suppose the "introductory text" in the above outline were to take up a few pages. On one of the pages having only body text, I would want the running header to display the text of the Heading 1 just above it, rather than the text of the Heading 2 title preceding that. In other words, I would like some sort of decision process, on a page-by-page basis, on which title's text it should use.
Is it possible to do this in FrameMaker 8? I tried using the <$condtag> building block, but I couldn't even get it to display anything meaningful, much less the correct text. I think I was misusing this building block - that it's only for use on pages that have conditional text, is that correct? My document has no conditional text in it at all.
Can anyone suggest how I might accomplish what I'm trying to do?
Thank you!
JoyceJoyce,
Try using: <$paratext[Heading2,Heading1]>
This tells FM to use the first Heading2 on the page. If it doesn't find one, then search backwards until a Heading1 is found. You can keep adding multiple paratags in the specification. Just remember to list them in the reverse order of hierarchy.
You definitely do not want to be using the <$condtag> building block. This just tells FM to list the specified conditional tags found on each page and include alternative text if none are found. -
Thumbnails wont display pages in a chapter that I know are there and have pasted in
Hello everyone.
I am an author and have previously published two books in the iBookstore using iBooks Author. The third one that I'm attempting to lay out is giving me major problems for some reason. I have a MacBook Air 13 inch Mid 2013 Processor 1.3 GHz Intel Core i5 running Mac OSX 10.9.5 and the latest iBooks Author 2.1.3. My screen window is as large as it can go on my screen, and everything seems to work fine when I select a chapter layout and just drop the text in, but then when I go back and start modifying some of the page layouts by changing say, from a two column text only page to a one column text and half page image, or any of the other options, it works okay for the first couple of times but then I see that the last couple of pages of text in that chapter have been 'pushed' off the end of both the thumbnail pane on the left hand side of the screen, and in the main window itself. I can't get to them because the scroll bars in both the main window and the thumbnail pane are at the ends of their travel and won't let me see any more of the pages that I know must be there, and were there before I started putting images in... I took a screengrab and on the very right hand side of the main window you can just see a portion of the next text page, but I can't scroll on to it or access it in any way, which has brought everything to a grinding halt. Is there a page limit within each chapter that I don't know about? (I currently have about ten pages in this chapter, but that might go up to about 13 if I was able to drop some more images in.) The images are all jpegs, maximum size of around 13 MB, average around 8MB. I noticed that the 'Media' file took a very long while to load images into from IPhoto, and I don't know whether that indicates a problem between iPhoto and iBooks Author or not? I still have my two original iBooks stored in the iBooks Author memory, and wonder if I have somehow exceeded an overall memory size in the app or not? Or is it something much more basic that I'm doing wrong? I've quit the programme several times and rebooted, to no effect. Any ideas or help would be appreciated please. PS I'm not a tech head, so terminal-speak doesn't mean anything to me by the way...!

Hold everything guys! I think I've solved the problem – by manually adding on extra text pages at the end of the thumbnail pane, it kind of 'catches up' with the rest of the text. I was expecting this to happen automatically, like when you paste in text the first time around, but clearly this doesn't happen and you've got to do it yourself... Note to Apple: a 'flow-on' updating feature for page layout changes would be good to incorporate next time around please.10 marks for recognising the Latin (sort of) that is the placeholder text in your template.
You are using a Word Processing template. WP templates have content flowing from page to page. As one page fills up, a new one is created. If some of that text is deleted or displaced the pages retract.
When you combine text, invisibles like word spaces, returns, tabs, page breaks etc with objects that have text wrap set, the mix can behave in an apparent odd fashion.
Start with showing where everything is:
Menu > View > Show Layout/Invisibles
Start with getting rid of any excess returns you may have used to "position" things. Next cut and paste objects like textboxes, shapes, charts and tables "Inline" ie in as part of the text. If necessary also turn off text wrap on objects or minimise it so that doesn't push text completely out of the way.
Insert Section breaks in the Text where you want fixed breaks in the layout these will provide separation between layout on different pages.
Basically you need to clean up your layout or think about doing it another way.
If there is a lot of layout, you will need to learn Pages methods for doing this in a WP template or do it in a Layout template where each page is individual and all objects are floating with no default text area.

On Ibooks Author, my programmed image for the Chapter page no longer shows up on new pages, just appears as a question mark inside a box, How do I fix this? Please help, its the same when I try and copy and paste the same image within Ibooks author.
https://discussions.apple.com/message/24420017#24420017
You may have moved or removed content on your page or its possible you used the"Adjust Image" and over sharpeed one or more images.
I assume you mean it does not show up of new Chapter pages... have you checked the template?
Where you see the ? you need to either reduce teh box outline size - or drop anther copy of the original image onto it, it may fill the ? box or sit on top.... delete the ? box.
If its Chapter page only related, its better doing this in the template.
Is you image .jpg or .png? -
I have one LONG chapter in my book and feel is necessary to make some edits that include additional pages within the chapter itself. But when I INSERT a page or press the +Page prompt as I have my chapter open to the place I wish to insert a page, the new page appears only at the END of the chapter and not at the point within the chapter that I would want the new blank page to appear. What gives? Another under developed software bug, or....?
Anyone else have the same issue and has been able to overcome it?A new page is always dropped at the end. The only option I have found is simply to copy and paste everything down one - or as you want to adapt it. I assume its not a text only book or the text would flow and add pages as required.
Its not a bug or under developed.... its the Apple Way -
The last page of a chapter is often a repeat of the page, 2 pages ago. IE. pg 228 is a repeat of page226, not the page following 227.
You aren't the only one to have had problems with that trilogy - you could try deleting the book and re-downloading it, otherwise see my reply here.

Why are there 2 pages in a chapter?
In the layouts pane, in the 'chapters' bit. There are 2 pages, one left and one right. Why is that?
I don't get the functional difference of a chapter, a section and a page. It also seems i can add a 'page' to a 'chapter', wouldn't you expect a 'section' here?
Thx,
Kevin,The right page is the 'default' choice when you add a page.
The difference between Chapter, Section and Page is a heirarchal structure. Pages are added to chapters or sections, and sections are added to chapters.
You can add pages to chapters for the times where you do not need sections in a chapter. -
I have an ibooks file that when I make a change to a page in one chapter it adds additional pages at the end of the chapter from another chapter. Any ideas what is going on and how I can fix this?
Text pages? from what you say you are getting the auto flow function to add pages either because you have flowing text or because you have a lot of blank lines as you would if you tap return to move blank space around.

Since updating to ios 6 yesterday, my ebooks won't work properly. They jump from first page of one chapter onto first page of next chapter. Obviously missing all the pages in between. Anyone else having this problem? Help please....
I have a similar problem with Microsoft Visual C# 2010 Step by Step. This ebook worked fine until I upgraded to ios 6.

The book that I'm currently reading always showed the remaining pages in the chapter. But as of this morning, the "... pages left" item on the down right side of my screen doesn't show the remaining pages in the chapter anymore, but the remaining pages of the book.
Was there a setting I accidentally changed? Because I can't remember changing anything. Anyone knows how this behaviour is triggered? And more important, how it can be changed back.
Thanks! Not positive here but it almost sounds like your sign in was up and your wife used the computer and clicked on different sites that showed up on your sign in, Truth be told it was an accident that both you and her were unaware of. This is the reason that we have one sign in that we both use and when it gets cluttered I simply create a folder and put her stuff in it that way it isn't in my way.

Why are the Chapter titles not completely showing up in my TOC? I have customized the page, but there are no layers or anything to cover them up and they seem to drop off at different spots in each chapter.
Thanks, KT. I already have the O'Reilly-ebook, just haven't read it from cover to cover yet. And yes, I have jumped in without looking where I would land. So yes, I'm that guy. I try to learn stuff by doing, and from my mistakes.
(It's funny: the last time I asked a question and the reply was "If you don't know, I am not gonna tell ya." I was on a playground, and Eisenhower was president, so please don't be that guy.) I came here, hat in hand, to learn, not to be scolded. I do respect your knowledge, and would be happy with a little mutual respect.
In the O'Reilly book, it did not produce a hit for "insert page". I did find this, however:
"Text Boxes
Author fills up all the pages you insert with an array of images and text, but you can replace it all with whatever you want. If you want to add text where there used to be an image (or over some blank white space), you’ll need to insert a text box first."
Am I getting warmer?
I was trying to insert a page in front of some that was already established. Does this imply that I need to insert a tex box instead? -
In ibooks author how to make an existing page start a new section
I have imported a Pages document into ibook authors (version 2.1.1 in OS 10.9.1) using the Classic Text Template. The original Pages document was basically a book, with title and table of contents and forward and several sections. Now everything is one huge unit. During the import I can choose a layout, but only a chapter or a section. Then all of the document is regarded as having that layout -- every page is regarded as having the section layout, for example, though only the first page has the smaller text area and the large text as a header. I can see all the layout possibilities in the Layouts sidebar, and they include section and forward and 1 column. When I hover the cursor over a particular page the book sidebar I see the little triangle that has been mentioned, and it offers options for changing layout, but it does not allow me to make that page a new section or a forward. I can only make the page 2 column or put a sidebar on it. I cannot see how I can import the book and be able to create chapters and sections with ibooks author. I can insert a new section layout, or a new page, but I do not see how to to change a page, after it is imported and is considered to be the text of a chapter or section, into the start of a new chapter or section. I do not find anything in the inspector or on the menubar or in the help center that makes this change. The "add a chapter title" does not change the layout to make the text box smaller, as it should for a layout. Is it actually possible to convert a Pages book into an ibook authors book, or must I create the blank chapters and sections in ibook authors and then cut and paste each section from Pages?
The advice given for iBA, is to preplan your book. Modify an exsiting template as your layout suits you, to present a quality book to your readers.
iBooks Author is really more "app" than a book maker like inDesign or even Pages, - and users should really get to know how to use it before starting out on a serious project.
The insert options are clear - you can insert a Chapter from MS Word or Pages in iBA a "chapter" is a distinct "standalone" part of a book which can include sections and pages as required. Sections can be moved up or down within their chapter or can be copied from one chapter to another. The pages in any chapter are static and the only way to change content location is copy and paste.
From your post, its seems you decided to create you book using Pages and in one chapter expecting iBA to reformat it.
I would suggest a solution is to count your chapters and add that number into an iBA new book, then copy your Pages chapters. I would guess that the whole process would take less than 30 minutes.
Apple recieves feedback and suggestions for improvements, however the last update made very few changes to the application and none of those seen in many posts - such as being able to move pages. This indicates that Apple at least, are satisfied that the version is functional enough for how Apple see books being made for its store. 12 months ago this forum was taking hundreds of posts per day asking advice, its now a trickle- which I take to be in indicator that as a group, iBA users have taught themselves how to use the application and its many options and third party add on's. iBA is more suited to the interactive side of publications as Apple intended, creating a mainly text only "novel" seems to be considered by Apple as the easy part!
