Landline - No Dialtone all of a sudden, never a problem for 14yrs... before now

I have a landline with Verizon. I live in Saratoga N.Y. and have had the same landline here for 14 years, without a problem...before today (Approx.). Even when the powers' been out, at least the phone would work (which is why I have a land line). Today, when I went to make a call, I picked up the phone, and there was only a very faint "hum", and no dialtone. Thinking something may just have happened to one of my jacks (or wires to it), I went and tried the other jack in my home, but the same problem was there too. I tried a different phone, angain also trying both jacks...same problem.Went to check the NID box outside** on the corner of the house, also same problem there, too. I then went to my neighbor, and checked to see if they had any problem, they did not.
**(NID box was a little different than shown, it had no jacks plugged into the receptacles...only a pair of wires going to red + green plastic screws right next to the receptacles). I know in the past it had the plus is described, but I have not seen the inside of that box in several years, and don't remember anyone coming to change anything. Not sure why they are not there now...
I just sent in a Repair Request Online, since it's the only means at my disposal now. Once it was submitted, it's status said (online) it should be repaired 2 days from now.
I am disabled, house-bound, and with no way to go anyplace. And now without a phone, I can't even make calls to make transportation arrangements, get perscriptions called in for refills, etc..... all of which I needed to get done today and tomorrow, naturally. (No, no cell phone, can't afford it, and that type of service has not been good in this area in the past, anyways).
I also don't understand why I would have a problem with a landline like this, when it's not affecting others nearby. Nothing has happened at my house (storm, utility work, etc.) to cause that kind of problem. I am also wondering if the Online Repair Request will be enough to get someone to fix it, since I have no way to be contacted without the phone working?
And lastly, When I checked the Status Online, it said something like "The number reported is part of an outage", which makes me wonder if that's just a standard "status reply"....otherwise, how it could be "part of an outage", if no one else next to me is having the same problem(s)???

    Small chance that you have been infected by Trojan.OSX.BASH/QHost.WB.A that was out for about a day back near the end of July. To be certain open Network Utility from your Utilities folder and do a ping for google.ca and google.com. Also do a locate for each. If the results of the ping show an IP address of 91.224.160.26 that confirms the infection. If the ping IP matches any of the locate IPs then your OK.
    Do you recall downloading and installing a flash update called "FlashPlayer.pkg.zip"?  That's what caused the problem so you should trash it if you have not already so your not apt to redamage the host file.
    To confirm, launch the TextEdit application and select File -> Open from the menu bar. With the file dialog open, press the key combination Command-Shift-G.  In the "Go to the folder:" dialog type "/etc/hosts" without the quotes and click the "Open" button.  Post the contents of the hosts file.

    Cellular data is a feature from your phone carrier.  Have you contacted them to resolve your issue.

I tried the same password and it didn't work either. I read a couple of posts and they all want to take me through Applications/Utilities but that requires knowing your password in order to change it. I don't know it. Don't remember ever setting up a keychain password. Does anyone know how to change the keychain password if you don't know the keychain password???

    Most of the time your Keychain password is the same as your login password. If you configured your computer to log you in automatically, you may not have used your login password in so long you forgot it.
    There is no way to retrieve the "login" Keychain password, but you can reset the Keychain from the Preferences menu: select it in the Keychain Access menu and select "Reset My Default Keychain". This will create a new, empty Keychain but the old one will be saved should you ever remember its password.
    The result of this is that you will have to supply passwords for everything that requires it, since without your Keychain they will no longer automatically fill themselves. However, once you supply them and store them in your new Keychain, they will be remembered.

  • All iPhone music suddenly shows as "other" - can't sync now as no room left

    hi all,
    i put my iPhone in its official apple combination iPhone & apple bluetooth headset dock to sync it. for some unknown god-forsaken reason, it then gave the warning that this is not a device designed to connect to the iPhone specifically, and asked if i wanted to go into airplane mode (??? - this has never happened before, and this is the official dock from apple for the iPhone and bluetooth headset). i clicked "no" (if there had a "HELLS NO!" i would've clicked that). this was syncing to a black macbook core 2 duo with leopard on it. now, after syncing, all my wonderful music and videos that were on the drive of my 8 GB iPhone now show as some unknown "other" and i can't access any of it — none of my songs, videos artists or playlists are showing as anything but blank, but the iPhone's 8 GB's are filled up completely with this "other" in the graph in iTunes of what is on my iPhone. i've tried re-syncing and haven't gotten the same error — it syncs all my contacts, calendars and mail ok, and i've gotten a couple of my podcasts on, but all my other music and video won't sync now as it shows this "other" is taking up the whole drive. who do i report this to? how do i fix it? please advise.

    I just got through fixing this ordeal
    my iPhone's music and videos displayed in iTunes as orange other instead of purple and blue for videos and music respectively
    here is what you've got to do
    1. sync the phone once before you start
    2. make sure you sync contacts, bookmarks, mail and calendar with some source (everything under info tab)
    3. click the restore button in iTunes on the iPhone's page
    4. confirm all messages, this takes forever so just wait
    5. the iphone will restart and iTunes will say what do you want to do with this new iphone
    6. tell it restore to setting of your iPhone's name
    7. this takes even longer than step 3 and 4
    8. when it restores, the iPhone will turn off and back on and the bar will show that there is no data on it except for a few orange "other" files (the ones that are supposed to be there)
    9. go through each of the tabs on the top of the iphone page and make sure music, videos, podcasts, pictures is selected to sync the way you want it and sync it
    10. this will take forever more than step 7, it took me 40 minutes, but I have USB 1.0 so everything on this will probably be shorter for new (or just not old as dirt) computers
    11. this should fix the problem, it didn't for me, when i went to iPod on the iPhone it suggested buying music from iTunes because I had none i just synced the phone one more time and all of the music appeared when i opened iPod (this takes as long as a regular ole sync)
    there you have it your iPhone is good as new (except it didn't fix my broken screen:( )
    i have heard that this problem is because of some glitch between iPhone 1.1.4 and Windows XP, but IDK
    earlier today i was messing with the manually manage my music and videos option maybe this somehow triggered it, thats the only thing i can think of

    I guess I should have written that I had tried the tips on 'reset printer' and 'does not print to paper at all' before I posted the question - to no avail.
    The printer starts as normal: it's the right printer selected, the dialogue window shows the progress of sending the data to the printer - and after that: that's it. It simply vanishes from the queue, and nothing happens.

    Make sure there's no dust in the 30-pin connector and that the cable is fully seated in the side of the iPad.
    The charger could have failed. Take it to an Apple Store for evaluation.

    Because you had the printer connected to Windows, the print queue on your Mac was for this connection. With you moving the printer away from the Windows computer, the print queue on the Mac will no longer work and will show offline. So for the new connection of the printer you have to create a new print queue.
    Now the question is; how is the printer connected to the Mac. If it is connected by USB to the Mac then it should appear in the Default Add Printer view. If it is connected to the Mac via some other method, then could you reply with how it is connected.
    If it is connected to the Mac by USB then the most likely cause for the printer not appearing in the Default Add Printer view is thenUSB printer cable. So try disconnecting it and reconnecting it or even try another USB printer cable.

  • OK... all of a sudden I get asked for mail password

    This has just started happening recently... and it is getting a little irritating. What makes it even more frustrating is it not consistent... sometimes it asks me two or three times a session and other times it works without issue.
    I will be in Mail and the box pops up asking me for my password and I check the little box allowing it to put it in keychain... sometimes a few moments later it pops up again...
    Can anyone tell me what is going on or what has possibly changed. I sure haven't changed anything on my system with Mail. It almost makes me want to switch to Entourage.

    Like many others, I too have noticed intermittent mail-check authentication failures since around mid-November. I use Eudora 6.2.4 with 3 Verizon accounts and another at my employer; only the Verizon ones have this problem. I see the same thing with Mail.app (version 3.5).
    In my case, the problem seems to be 100% correlated with 2 of Verizon's pool of about 15 servers. Please see my postings at

    I have no explanation as to why some user's Mail Preferences are reverting to APOP. I can see that Ernie Stamper's suggested workaround of setting the preference to "Password" works on Verizon, but IMHO is a bit risky, since that results in your name and password being sent in the clear. I have found that for Verizon users at least, setting the preference to "MD5" is better; that's secure, and it'll work most of the time, but if it fails, Mail will immediately fall back to "Password" which will always work -- that's still unsecure but at least it does that only occasionally rather than every time.

    No it's not infected.  Infected with what?  Make sure you enabled the no pop up window settings in your browsers.
    How large is your hard drive and how much hard drive space do you have left?
    You are still under warranty.  Call Apple Care. Make sure you get a case number as all repairs have an additional 90 days of warranty.
