• Language packs seem to break spell-check language selection

I suspect this is a bug, but maybe I am doing something wrong, so I'll ask here before submitting a bug report.
I have Thunderbird 31.2.0 installed on OS X Mavericks. I am pretty sure it is the en-GB version, but I have several language packs installed, including the (presumably redundant) en-GB pack. I also have installed (and sometimes uninstalled) the add-ons "Quick Locale Switcher" and "Simple Locale Switcher" at various times to switch the user interface language. (The reason I have included the two is, I had the "Quick" switcher first, and suspected what I was seeing might be a bug in the add-on, so I switched to the other.)
Now, the symptom. When the user interface language is set as en-GB, the spell-checker language choice in the "Preferences" menu (I guess "Options" in Windows, and I don't know what in Linux) is respected - I can type an email in one language, stop, switch the spell-checker language half way through, and the real-time spell-checking is then by the new language exactly as I would have expected. But, when the user interface language is anything other than en-GB (I haven't tried en-US, but I have tried German and Russian), the spell-check language follows the user interface language, and changing the spell-check language option in the "Preferences" menu has no effect whatsoever on anything.
This problem persisted even after I removed the two language-switching add-ons. Then, I removed all the language packs (which forced my user interface back into en-GB), and magically the spell-check language selection started working again.
So I am thinking the problem is driven by the user interface being from a language pack. When the user interface language matches the original install language, the spell-check language selection works; when the user interface language is something else, the spell-check language selection is ignored, and the actual spell-check language follows the user interface language.
The "Simple Locale Switcher" does not seem to allow the user interface language and the spell-check language to be switched independently, but "Quick Locale Switcher" does. However, this feature doesn't seem to work, nor does switching the spell-check language through the Thunderbird Preferences rather than the add-on (unless the user interface language is the default en-GB).
Has any one else seen a problem like this? Is there a way to fix it? (Maybe futz with the language settings on the other side of the "Here Be Dragons" warning?)

Before chasing dragons, right click in the body of a mail in the compose window and set the spell check language there. I have no idea if it will work, but it might add to the over all body of knowledge for a bug report.
Please post a link to any bug report you make.

• Enable edit/spell check for Weblogs comment

Probable this was already addressed, just can't find the relevant post, but it would be great to have edit/spell check option for Weblogs comment just like in the forum.
Recently my grammar/spell is getting even worse than usual;-)))

Hi Peter,
Gregor is right. I am using iespell(sorry no firefox version available) even payed the nominal fee and then right-mouse-click spell check done.
I use that even here in the forum because I have more control over which words are O.K.
Best, Mark.
P.S. Bummer I outed myself as the last nerd still using IE, or is it the final proof, that I am not really one

• Text and spell check in languages other than English

I am a linguist who writes papers primarily in English, but which contain a significant number of words and paragraphs in other languages. Is there a way (as there is in MSWord) to highlight these words and passages and choose a different language for them so that the spell checker does not see them as English misspelled words.
Even better would be for the spell checker to identify eventual errors in these paragraphs of foreign languages: However, when I choose EDIT > SPELLING > SPELLING... the spelling checker window has no button or menu allowing the user to select different languages or language dictionaries.
I know that Mail does it automatically for the languages provided. Is there anything comparable in Pages?
Most of the alternative languages I use are quite common, i.e. French, Spanish, Portuguese.

drew,
Select your paragraph, click on the Text Inspector, More button, then select the language from the menu.

• Keyboard input in other languages - How to turn off spell checker?

I have been trying to send text messages on the iPhone in my native language and it kept replacing all the words with english words. I have tried to turn off the spell checking, but no luck. I have asked the Apple Store employees, no luck there either. How can I type my messages in languages other than english? I don't need a spell checker in my language, I just want an option to turn off the english one.

Input is essentially English only for this version of the iPhone.

• Editing Spell Check Files in OSXand other apps

Hi All!
Occasionally, I will fat-finger and add in incorrectly spelled word into the spell checker...I've done it in Mail, Firefox, and probably Word for Mac.
Does anyone know which file(s) can be accessed and reviewed for accuracy? I would like to remove the incorrectly spelled words.
Thanks!

I really like this system pref pane:
Dictionary Cleaner
It helps you clean up and add words very easily. Some of the buttons don't work as expected but the basic features work.

• "Can't contact Spell Checker".... in ANY program?

I've been getting the message "Can't or Couldn't contact Spell Checker" in both Neo Office and Text Edit, or any non-browser program that uses word processing. It used to happen some in Safari, but the latest version seems to have fixed the issue w/that browser. Please help, if you can. I really need spell checking! I haven't been using Pages recently, but this seems to apply to Text Edit, so I'm assuming it would apply to iWork should I do the new upgrade. It seems to be an "internal" problem that is affecting multiple software programs.
Thanks in advance for any help. Garth.

thanks peggy, but...
Been there. Done that. I did check the Crash Log files, and I can tell you that the filepath has something to do with the Frameworks folder---maybe a corrupted file in there that was brought on by one of the recent apple updates. I don't have iWork yet. Text Edit spell check doesn't work at all. Since I've had no 3rd party spell check apps installed (that I can see anywhere), then I'm assuming that this problem originated with one of the Tiger updates. It seems as though all of the posts I've read say Tiger is the OS particularly affected. I don't want to Archive and Install if it just ends up repeating the same Kernel flaw when I re-download the software updates.
thanks anyway,
GArth.

• Can Firefox change the language for spell-check automatically when I change my input keyboard in Windows?

I am an American, studying French and Spanish, on Windows 8.1. For typing in web forms (and in any other program), I installed Windows keyboards for French and Spanish. Windows lets me switch between keyboards easily, by either (a) an icon in the system tray, or (b) the key combo Windows Key + Space Bar.
In Firefox I installed a spell checker for French and Spanish. Very nice.
But when I switch between languages, to get the correct spell checker I have to right-click in a text field, then go to Languages and select my current language. A minor inconvenience.
It would be nice for Firefox to detect which keyboard I am using and switch to the appropriate spell checker automatically. Is it possible please?
I keep the user interface for both Windows and Firefox in English always.

• Spell checking in different languages in Mail

Dear all,
I face the following problem when using Mail. I have many friends who speak many tongues and I'd like to be able to e-mail them back in their languages. So, how do I set the typing language in Mail so that spell check checks the text correctly for me?
The usual scenario is that I need to type in Italian when I normally use English (UK). Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for the response. That's exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks a million,

• How do I change the default language for the spell checker? - solved, sort of...

As the previous thread was closed without actual resolution - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/941350?esab=a&s=&r=0&as=s
I managed to solve this on my end by just reinstalling firefox using the localisation of the default dictionary language i wanted from here - http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
A bit of a shame that the main download page doesnt select the geographically relevant localisation for you and even more so that changing the default language for the in built spell checker is so kak. oh well.

• Adobe Reader 11 MUI Spell check?

Hello,
Where can I find the list of all supported languages for spell check? I saw one for Adobe Reader 9 but not one listed for 10 and 11. Am I to assume that is the same list?
Does the spell check apply to any Asian language, like both Chinese, korean, japanese, etc.?
Also if I install the MUI, do I need to install the Extended Font pack for Asian languages?
What does the dictionary pack provide in additional to the standard MUI spell check dictionary, does it expand on the current dictionary to include Asian dictionary, if that's is a possibility.
Thanks!

Hi yellowsub123,
Thank you for posting on the forums. Kindly try the steps mentioned below to get the list of language available in Reader for spell check.
1) Open Reader
2) Edit>Preferences
3) Spelling>Dictionary for spell check
Thanks,

• InDesign CC spell check is not working at all

I have been using InDesign for around a month now and now my spell check is not working at all. I have tried replacing preferences, changed dictionaries, created new documents with placeholder text and spell check does nothing at all with all of these things. Please Help

Not all locales come with a dictionary installed for licensing reasons.
If you do not have the en-US locale then check that you have a dictionary installed (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) and selected.

You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu.
Also make sure that [X]"Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu has a tick.
You can also try to toggle the "Check Spelling" item off and on again.
• Spell Check Entire Site

Hi,
Just created over 300 pages in Dreamweaver, and now want to
spell check. Is there a way to spell check the entire site? I can't
seriously believe that the only way to do it is to open each page.
After all if Find and Replace works on all files why doesn't Spell
Check?
What is everyone else doing? Is there an extension I need to
install?
Thanks much

• Spell Checker Size Limit

Is there a limit to the size of a section of text that the Spell Checker in a text box can handle? I am getting a message, "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" message in the pop-up window. If I just enter in a short section of text in the same text box, spell checker works fine.
I am working in APEX 3.1.
Thanks in advance,
John

An update on this question. I have been testing it today and I have found that the spell checker in a text area works with up to 255 words. Seems like maybe I have run up against the top limit for the spell checker - 255 words or hexadecimal FF??
Any insight on this would be appreciated!
Thanks,
John
