Language Learning Forum should be open for all again

I am having trouble gaining access to the Language Learning Community. I just want to meet people from around the world so that I can practice....this whole posting requirement seems a little silly.

Hello, I am at a loss as to why we we have to 'rank up' before we can access language exchange forums. When it was the way it used to be, I made so many friends and it benefitted my language learning greatly. And these were all from people who just came to these forums on the offchance, some with 0 posts, some with 1 post. Now a huge audience of language learners will be excluded... It is not even clear how much we have to contribute to the community before we can access them. Will it ever be reverted to how it used to be? I spent 2 years studying Japanese, and I can't tell you how beneficial the old skype language forums were for that. I have now begun Mandarin and it would benefit myself and so many others if the forums were opened up again. Thanks for reading,Will

Has anyone by any chance read about (or frankly experienced) the rank up? Honestly though, it makes sense because sometime you have a lot of creepers that just want to make accounts and skype girls and then pull a "chatroulette" on them if you catch my drift.
It makes sense and it shows you are an active competent person who is striving to learn the language not someone who is simply going to try it out and then "drop the class" if you will after a week of exposure.
Competition has always bred the best of beasts and men. Continue doing that it shall.
Too often did I add an individual who simply wouldn't respond to me whatsover or seemed to not want to skype just send messages and thats not always quite helpful, and can become tiresome for the devout and ardent learner of languages.
Alas i'll post til I get upgraded and permitted then I shall post once more about the quantity of postings required.
Good luck to all of you in your studies and fun practice of languages!

    Welcome to the communities.
We want to help you but unfortunately you have given us insufficient information.
Please find a moment to tell us more about your machine, the model identifier, the OS version, and the total amount of RAM you have.   It also helps to know where you are, nothing specific, just the country.
Then fill those same details in your profile for future use.
We need this to answer questions otherwise we're just working blind.   Remember, different OS's and devices often require different answers for the same question.

I've checked login items in system prefs, nothing there
I've checked the program's preferences, no option seems relevant there
I've checked (i think all of them) the program's .plists, nada
I've checked launch items and launch daemons in Library and System/Library, but can't find anything there

  • What ports should be open for mac-pc chat?

So we've finally got our cams to work with cross-platforming (thanks to sandra and ralph). Now I still have a little bit of problems. I cannot hear him, tho he can hear me, and for some reason, sending/receiving files seem to be hard with most of my buddies. Can someone out there who can do all of these things tell me that optimal ports that they have open? That would be wonderful!

Whenever there is no audio at your end, but the PC user on the other end has a mic and can hear you, the PC user should try "tuning" the preferences for his camera and / or Mic. That may resolve the problem.
To find the setting, he must click on the Preferences menu option that becomes available after he clicks on the Setup icon near the bottom of the AIM 5.9 Buddy List Window.
Once he sees the Preferences, he needs to drop down the list, and click on "Live Video." In the new window that opens, click the button that says "Tuning Video and Audio." Follow the instructions in the wizard that opens.
Some PC users report that they need to reboot their PC after tuning to make the changes effective. Some also have reported that they must re-"Tune" whenever they make ANY camera or mic change, even as simple as unplugging and later plugging the same item back into their PC.
Can someone out there who can do all of these things tell me that optimal ports that they have open?
Your PC pal should see the AIM® Video IM - Frequently Asked Questions for info on setup and router configuration at his end.

  • Learning PHP, should I wait for PHP 6 or begin right now with 5?

Easy question, I guess. I want to learn PHP, but since PHP 6 is close, perhaps I could wait, but if it will be easy to switch from 5 to 6, perhaps I could begin right now with 5 and then learn 6, what do you think?

    xD
Well I liked PHP syntax somehow when I readed some code, and also that it can be used for web and desktop apps, but if you've got a better suggestion instead of flaming you could of course say that
I actually didn't mean to flame, hence my "no offense" but people who are used to languages with more structure and design might be slightly bewildered. As I said, I use PHP myself for various projects, it's a love-hate thing really. Anyway, I found myself productive in replying here by stating that I would recommend PHP for whatever dynamic web page has to be made. It DOES get the job done easily, just it usually isn't pretty .
Don't worry about that, I was at a conference held by Lukas Smith ( PHP's Release Manager ) yesterday, and he himself told everyone that PHP is a "patchy" language were there are no defined rules, no real guidelines or anything, but that's also why it's so powerful ( still some guy who came to discover what was PHP were kinda scared xD ). It also prove once more that the community can do awesome work and that open-source is a really good way to go

  • How can I stop ipages opening for all docs

    Hi,
I upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard.
When on Snow Leopard all of the documents were created in Word and Word was the default applicaton that opened. Now on Mavericks
it's iPages that keep opening as if it's the default application for documents now. Even Word docs are opening in Ipages??
    Please can someone help?
    Many thanks....

Select one of the doucments, and righrt click (or control + left click) it. In the drop down, select Get Info.

  • Can't get PSE 10 Downloader to Open for ALL CF Cards

I have 4 identical CF cards. Two of them when plugged into the card reader on the computer open PSE downloader just fine. The other two when plugged into the card reader do NOTHING. The downloader does not open. If I place these two cards in my camera or a external card reader then connect thru a USB port the PSE downloader opens just fine.
Can anyone tell me why this is happening and how I can fix it so I am able to plud all the cards into the computer's card reader directly? Is it a problem with the cards, the card reader on the computer or maybe settings?

The only other suggestion is to check your preference settings.
    From the organizer menu click:
Edit >> Preferences >> Camera or Card Reader
Highlight the current generic setting and click the edit button.
There are three choices. Try experimenting with each setting.
On the Mac use the Photoshop Elements menu rather than the Edit menu.
If that makes no difference then I suspect the problem could be down to different card/camera manufacturers. Some devices identify themselves as a fixed drive (same as a hard drive) instead of removable media. Adobe Photo Downloader isn't compatible with fixed drives. In that case you will need to copy the files directly to a folder on the hard drive and use:
Choose File >> Get Photos & Videos >> From Files and Folders.

  • For All Entries is NOT better than INNER JOIN in most cases

I quote from Siegfried Boes' excellent post here: Will writing an inner join be better or creating a view?
For all the FOR ALL ENTRIES lovers ... there is no proof for these reappearing recommendation.
There is nearly nobody who receives forum points, who recommends FOR ALL ENTRIES instead of Joins. What is the reason ???
It is easier to prove the opposite. A Join is a nested loop inside the database, a FOR ALL ENTRIES is partly outside of the database. FOR ALL ENTRIES works in blocks, joins on totals.
FOR ALL ENTRIES are not recommded on really large tables, because the chances are too high that
    too many records are transferred.
People prefer FOR ALL ENTRIES, because JOINs are not so easy to understand. Joins can go wrong, but with a bit of understanding they can be fixed.
Some Joins are slow and can not be fixed, but then the FOR ALL ENTRIES would be extremely slow.
There are several kinds of views:
    - projection views, i.e. only one table involved just fields reduced
    - join views, several tables, joins conditions stored in dictionary
    - materialized views, here the joined data are actually stored in the database. Storing and synchronisation has to be done manually.
Only the last one creates real overhead. It should be the exception.
Join Views and Joins are nearly identical. The view is better for reuse. The join is better in complicated, becuase if the access goes wrong, it can often be fixed by adding a hint. Hints can not be added to views.
    Abraham Bukit  points out:
If it is cluster table, (you can't use join). If it is buffered table, I would also say avoid join.
If they all are transaction table which are not buffered and are not cluster tables.
He further supports Siegfried's statement that FAE is easier to undestand than INNER JOINs.
Thomas Zloch says, regarding buffered tables:
At least think twice, maybe compare runtimes if in doubt.
So, unless someone has some EVIDENCE that FOR ALL ENTRIES is better, I don't think we want to see this discussed further.
    Kind regards
    Matt

To give food for thought here's an example I  gave in a thread:
If you have a statement like
    SELECT ... FOR ALL ENTRIES IN FAE_itab WHERE f = FAE_itab-f.
SAP sends it to the database depending how the parameter rsdb/prefer_union_all is set:
    rsdb/prefer_union_all = 0 =>
    SELECT ... WHERE f = FAE_itab[1]-f
              OR    f = FAE_itab[2]-f
              OR    f = FAE_itab[N]-f
You have some influence  of the generated statement type: Instead of OR'ed fields an IN list can be used
if you have only a single coulmn N to compare:
    rsdb/prefer_in_itab_opt parameter:
    SELECT ... WHERE f IN (itab[1]-f, itab[2]-f, ..., itab[N]-f)
    rsdb/prefer_union_all = 1 =>
    SELECT ... WHERE f = FAE_itab[1]-f
    UNION ALL SELECT ... WHERE f = FAE_itab[2]-f
    UNION ALL SELECT ... WHERE f = FAE_itab[N]-f
see: Note 48230 - Parameters for the SELECT ... FOR ALL ENTRIES statement
As you can see for the 2nd parameter several statements are generated and combined with a UNION ALL,
the first setting generates statements with OR's (or uses IN  if possible) for the entries in FAE_itab.
I give you a little example here (my parameters are set in a way that the OR's are translated to IN lists; i traced the execution in ST05)
Select myid into table t_tabcount from mydbtable
for all entries in t_table    " 484 entries
        where myid = t_table-myid .
    ST05 trace:
    |Transaction SEU_INT|Work process no 0|Proc.type  DIA|Client  200|User |
    |Duration |Obj. name |Op.    |Recs.|RC    |Statement|
    | 640|mydbtable |PREPARE|   |  0|SELECT WHERE "myid" IN ( :A0 , :A1 , :A2 , :A3 , :A4 ) AND "myid" = :A5|
    | 2|mydbtable |OPEN   |   |  0|SELECT WHERE "myid" IN ( 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ) AND "myid" = 72 |
    | 2.536|mydbtable |FETCH  |    0|  1403|   |
    | 3|mydbtable |REOPEN |   |  0|SELECT WHERE "myid" IN ( 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ) AND "myid" = 72 |
    | 118|mydbtable |FETCH  |  0|  |
    | 2|mydbtable |REOPEN |  |  0|SELECT WHERE "myid" IN ( 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ) AND "myid" = 72     |
    | 3|mydbtable |REOPEN |  |  0|SELECT WHERE "myid" IN ( 475 , 476 , 477 , 478 , 479 ) AND "myid" = 72  |
    | 94|mydbtable |FETCH  | 0| 1403|   |
    | 2|mydbtable |REOPEN |   |  0|SELECT WHERE "myid" IN ( 480 , 481 , 482 , 483 , 484 ) AND "myid" = 72 |
You see the IN list contained 5 entries each , wich made up about 97 statements for all 484 entries.
For every statment you have a single fetch operation wich means a separate access to the database.
If you would replace the FAE with a join you would only have one fetch to the database.
With the example above we can derive these observations:
    1. From database point of view these settings kill performance when you access a big table and/or have a lot of entries or columns in your FAE_itab. Furthermore, you hide information what data you will access
at all and thus you block the database from creating a more efficient execution plan because it DOESN'T KNOW wich data you will select in the next step. I.e. it may be more efficient to scan the table in one shot instead of having many index accesses - but the database can make this decision only if it can examine ONE statement that has ALL the information of what data to retrieve.
    2. A second impact is that with every statement execution you trigger the allocation of database resources
wich will contribute to the overhead described above.
Said that, FAE  can never be a replacement for joining big tables (think of having a table with thousands of records in a FAE table )

  • "Procurement Wizard"  window opens for a particular warehouse while saving Sales Order

    Hello All,
We have upgraded SAP B1 8.8 to SAP B1 9.0
My client is facing one of problem while saving Sales order using particular warehouse.
Actually client is having 4 warehouses (A,B,C,D) in which if they use one particular warehouse "A" for saving Sales order they are facing a issue. The scenario is here below:
    1. Client selects all required details of sales order with along with particular warehouse "A".
    2. On saving SO "Procurement Wizard" is automatically triggered even if procurement document field is unchecked in logistic tab of SO.
    3. This is happening only for a particular warehouse "A". Whereas if I select other 3 warehouses (B,C,D) the system saves SO without trigerring "Procurement Wizard".
Client is using SAP B1 9.0 PL 08
We don't want this  "Procurement Wizard" window to open for this. As we haven't selected any check box for  "Procurement Wizard" so it should not open for a particular warehouse "A".
Do you think any issue with my warehouse or system settings? Please let me know.
    Please refer screen shots.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Saurabh,
As per your Screen Shot, I think you have Add-on.
Please stop that Add-on and then check above Scenario.
    Thanks

  • Select for all entries

    Hi,
I am new in abap reports. Now i want to know why we should use select for all entries in query. We can do retrieve directly by accessing the table in database dictionary.
Experts please give me the reasons I want to know the concepts behind it.It will be better if you kindly explain this with help of code.
         With regards,
           Abir.

    HI
    GOOD
    SELECT
    Basic form
SELECT result [target] FROM source [where] [GROUP BY fields] [ORDER BY order].
    Effect
Retrieves an extract and/or a set of data from a database table or view (see Relational database ). SELECT belongs to the OPEN SQL command set.
Each SELECT command consists of a series of clauses specifying different tasks:
    The SELECT result clause specifies
whether the result of the selection is a table or a single record,
which columns the result is meant to have and
whether the result is allowed to include identical lines.
The INTO target clause specifies the target area into which the selected data is to be read. If the target area is an internal table, the INTO clause specifies
whether the selected data is to overwrite the contents of the internal table or
whether the selected data is to be appended to the contents and
whether the selected data is to be placed in the internal table all at once or in several packets.
The INTO clause can also follow the FROM clause.
You can omit the INTO clause. The system then makes the data available in the table work area (see TABLES ) dbtab . If the SELECT clause includes a "*", the command is processed like the identical SELECT * INTO dbtab FROM dbtab statement. If the SELECT clause contains a list a1 ... an , the command is executed like SELECT a1 ... an INTO CORRESPONDING FIELDS OF dbtab FROM dbtab .
If the result of the selection is meant to be a table, the data is usually (for further information, see INTO -Klausel ) read line by line within a processing loop introduced by SELECT and concluded by ENDSELECT . For each line read, the processing passes through the loop once. If the result of the selection is meant to be a single record, the closing ENDSELECT is omitted.
The FROM source clause the source (database table or view ) from which the data is to be selected. It also determines
    the type of client handling,
the behavior for buffered tables and
the maximum number of lines to be read.
The WHERE where clause specifies the conditions which the result of the selection must satisfy. It thus determines the lines of the result table. Normally - i.e. unless a client field is specified in the WHERE clause - only data of the current client is selected. If you want to select across other clients, the FROM clause must include the addition ... CLIENT SPECIFIED .
The GROUP-BY fields clause combines groups of lines together into single lines. A group is a set of lines which contain the same value for every database field in the GROUP BY clause.
The ORDER-BY order clause stipulates how the lines of the result table are to be ordered.
Each time the SELECT statement is executed, the system field SY-DBCNT contains the number of lines read so far. After ENDSELECT , SY-DBCNT contains the total number of lines read.
The return code value is set as follows:
SY-SUBRC = 0 At least one line was read.
    SY_SUBRC = 4 No lines were read.
SY-SUBRC = 8 The search key was not fully qualified.
(nur bei SELECT SINGLE ). The returned single record is any line of the solution set.
    Example
Output the passenger list for the Lufthansa flight 0400 on 28.02.1995:
    TABLES SBOOK.
    SELECT * FROM SBOOK
      WHERE
        CARRID   = 'LH '      AND
        CONNID   = '0400'     AND
        FLDATE   = '19950228'
      ORDER BY PRIMARY KEY.
      WRITE: / SBOOK-BOOKID, SBOOK-CUSTOMID,   SBOOK-CUSTTYPE,
               SBOOK-SMOKER, SBOOK-LUGGWEIGHT, SBOOK-WUNIT,
               SBOOK-INVOICE.
    ENDSELECT.
    Note
    Performance
In client/server environments, storing database tables in local buffers (see SAP buffering ) can save considerable amounts of time because the time required to make an access via the network is much more than that needed to access a locally buffered table.
    Notes
A SELECT command on a table for which SAP buffering is defined in the ABAP/4 Dictionary is normally satisfied from the SAP buffer by bypassing the database. This does not apply with
    - SELECT SINGLE FOR UPDATE
    - SELECT DISTINCT in the SELECT clause ,
    - BYPASSING BUFFER in the FROM clause ,
    - ORDER BY f1 ... fn in the ORDER-BY clause ,
    - aggregate functions in the SELECT clause ,
    - when using IS [NOT] NULL WHERE condition ,
or if the generic key part is not qualified in the WHERE-Bedingung for a generically buffered table.
Authorization checks are not supported by the SELECT statement, so you must program these yourself.
In dialog systems, the database system locking mechanism cannot always guarantee to synchronize the simultaneous access of several users to the same dataset. In many cases, it is therefore advisable to use the SAP locking mechanism .
Changes to data in a database are only finalized after a database commit (see LUW ). Prior to this, any database update can be reversed by a database rollback (see Programming transactions ). At the lowest isolation level (see the section on the "uncommitted read" under Locking mechanism ), this can result in the dataset selected by the SELECT command not really being written to the database. While a program is selecting data, a second program can add, change or delete lines at the same time. Then, the changes made by the second program are reversed by rolling back the database system. The selection of the first program thus reflects only a very temporary state of the database. If such "phantom data" is not acceptable for a program, you must either use the SAP locking mechanism or at least set the isolation level of the database system to "committed read" (see Locking mechanism ).
In a SELECT-ENDSELECT loop, the CONTINUE statement terminates the current loop pass prematurely and starts the next.
If one of the statements in a SELECT ... ENDSELECT loop results in a database commit, the cursor belonging to the SELECT ... ENDSELECT loop is lost and the processing terminates with a runtime error. Since each screen change automatically generates a database commit, statements such as CALL SCREEN , CALL DIALOG , CALL TRANSACTION or MESSAGE are not allowed within a SELECT ... ENDSELECT loop.

  • "Date Modified" for all files being changed if "Automatically write to XMP" is on

Recently upgraded from LR3 (v3.4.1) from LR2 on OSX 10.6.8 and have always had Catalog Settings > Automatically write changes into XMP turned on.
When browsing existing JPG files in my Library (no Develop changes, no keywording, no Presets, no Import), LR3 is writing to disk — i.e., when I look at files in Finder, almost every viewed file’s “Date Modified” is being set to today’s date and time. (It actually creates a .swp file, then changes it's name back to .jpg)
This is really bad, as it's making it impossible for me to use Finder to figure out when I last worked with a file, it is triggering needless Time Machine and Backblaze backups, and unnecessarily churning my disk.
If I turn off "Automatically write..." this behavior stops. Per David Marx at thelightroomlab.com, I tried turning off this preference, manually doing a "Save Metadata to File" for all files, letting that complete, then turning the preference back on. This does not solve the problem.
Per a suggestion at photoshop.com, I used ExifTool to see what changes LR was writing to a sample file; from the diff below, you can see that LR is adding a bunch of new fields as well as moving other fields around. But my point is that LR3 should never overwrite a file on disk if all I am doing is browsing thru them.
Is anyone else seeing this? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Then when LR3 loaded my old LR2 images into memory, it "dirtied" the in-memory copy of the file by adding in these new LR3 XMP fields. Then, because I had "Automatically write XMP" on, it said "I better write these changes to disk".
Yuck. As a former software engineer, this is very bad software engineering.
It should wait until the user dirties the file (via Develop, keywords, etc.) before presuming to add a bunch of metadata fields that are unique to the new version of LR3.
Well, I'm a current software developer, and this is, really, a perfectly reasonable thing to do. It is a reasonable trade-off for a convenient feature required by a small subset of users.
Yes, in most cases the in-memory copy should "never" be dirtied unless the user makes a gesture of some sort, but like I said earlier, this option (once set by the user) sets up the situation where this gesture becomes implicit. This is a clear trade-off for the sake of convenience. And if the XMP is out of date and needs to be updated en masse, so be it.
The fact is, there is no easy way around this. Do we save up /every/ dirty buffer somehow until you make a gesture that /might/ require the XMP to be up-to-date before acting on that gesture? Now we have to worry about unflushed buffers if something goes wrong and the app exits. Do we save the buffers to the DB? Now we have to block some calls to make another blocking call to flush some or all of those to DB, and then write some or all of it out to one or more files. In what order? What if there is a gesture to have X files with up-to-date XMP and some or all of those are in unflushed buffers, unflushed DB writes or we have to wait for the DB.
As you can see, this is a transactionality nightmare, and the easiest and safest thing to get what the user wants (i.e., up-to-date XMP for the purpose of talking to a third-party XMP aware app) is to simply update the sidecar or XMP block in an atomic manner using the correct file IO. The file will have to change at some point, so it may as well be now.
[Thanks to both of you for your detailed replies. I am aware of the need for tradeoffs so when you say the approach taken is quite reasonable, I do believe you. I also apologize in advance for the length of the following and am extremely aware of the time it must have taken you to compose the above replies, but I'm going to add a bit more, if only for my own piece of mind and in hopes of coming up with a solution for my workflow.]
From my naive point of view, I was expecting the answer to be simply "don't raise the XMPDirtyFlag upon reading in a file". Obviously if your architecture requires you to "upgrade to latest XMP format" upon read, and another part of the system auto-detects "out of date XMP", then it's going to write those changes to disk.
But it didn't need to be designed that way. LR obviously has mechanisms to know when a user has made a change to XMP so it is able to write XMP changes to disk only when necessary.
The promise (to me) of "Automatically Write XMP changes to disk" was to auto-save my changes, and not those made for any internal (i.e., XMP versioning related) changes.
Perhaps the premise is that it is LR3's job to update an individual file's XMP to the latest version so that other XMP-aware apps can make use of it? I would argue that those third-party XMP-aware apps already have to know how to deal with all prior versions of XMP, so LR3 should just leave well enough alone.
You asked if my problem with your approach was that it was "inelegant"; not at all, it is based on my own perception of what I need from my workflow, so let me describe that so maybe we can find a better way:
    * Part of the appeal of LR to me is that it preserves my original file as it came off the memory card, allowing me to move to a different workflow/toolset in 2025 if I choose to do so
    * However, with all of changes contained in a single database file, I'm concerned about rare (but possible) corruption, so to mitigate this risk, I let LR backup my database weekly and it's also backed up continuously in the cloud via Backblaze
    * Even with backups of the database, there is still a chance that I could lose changes made to individual files (e.g., LR corrupts the DB and I have to go back to last week's DB)
    * Thus the appeal of the "auto-write to XMP" flag -- that way critical changes (develop, crop, keywords) are saved on a per-file basis; I liked the "automatic" part of this (as opposed to a manual save) because then I don't have to teach others in my family how to manually save XMP changes
    * A nice side-effect of this setting is now when I use Finder to find a file and double-click on it to edit it in Photoshop, all my develop changes are right there; (in other words, I like the flexibility of not having to fire up LR in order to just invoke PS from within it); also when I use Bridge I see all the keywords there
    * So with LR2, I had gotten used to what I thought was the best of all worlds -- autosave of changes at the file level via XMP + raw negatives untouched (i.e., Date Modified == the date I took the picture); this allows me to use operating-system-level tools -- Finder -- to locate/search for files
    * Now I upgrade to LR3 and I'm finally now understanding that a concept "XMP versioning" is going to result in changes to many, but not all my files. (That's something else that's annoying about this issue -- I open up the Grid and browse a folder of files, and only seemingly random ones I've cursored over seem to get written to disk -- if it's so urgent that LR3 update the XMP, then it should do it for all the files in the catalog or at least in that directory)
Here's a screenshot from Finder of what I see everytime I look at this folder:
    * So now I have to assume that each new version of XMP and/or LR is going to touch my files on disk. Sigh.
    * What I don't like about this is that it is ruining the promise of "untouched raw negative". Yes, the image data is untouched -- which I agree is most of the benefit; but the file has been touched.
    * Perhaps you might empathize a bit more if you imagined that someone went thru all your source code or Word files and randomly changed the date to "today" because you upgraded compilers or moved to Word 2011.
I agree all of this would be solved by having an XMP sidecar file for JPGs, but you indicate that's not going to happen.
You've also alluded to the solution of "resetting the Date Modifed" to it's original value -- which I believe is what Finder does when you move or copy a file -- but that that is fraught with issues as well. I believe you when you say there are issues, but again the naive part of me wonders why that soultion would be so bad...
I just thought of another potential solution -- turning on Date Created in Finder -- but it turns out that's changed, too.
I am really at a loss as to what to do and would welcome your suggestions.
    Thanks again and kind regards,
