Language Selection bug (Mac)

I have appreciated the possibility to select a language different from the one of the OS via menù (previously I had to delete the Italian language folder to use English as operating language for LR) but it does not work perfectly and part o the panel is still shown in the OS language (iItalian in this case).

Can't get past language selection with Leopard Install disk

My 1 year old Intel Mac Mini, which had been running 10.5.4 without problems suddenly froze up. The mouse was still active but I couldn't click anything. I turned the system off with the power button. When I restarted it got as far as the login screen, but clicking the user didn't do anything. I was able to log in using safe mode (hold down shift when starting). I ran the disc utility, repaired permissions and verified the disc. Seemed OK, but still the same behavior (freeze at login screen) when I try to boot normally.
I tried booting from the Leopard install disk. When it reached the language selection page there were some strange-looking horizontal lines in the display. Clicking the "proceed" button caused a copy of the button's graphic to appear at the top of the page and nothing else happened. Very puzzling, since I had upgraded OS X using that same disc.
I have a Superduper backup from a couple of weeks ago. It won't boot up normally either. Any ideas? Unfortunately, I'm 2 weeks out of warranty!

I would probably start looking at the ram to see if it's worked loose or a board has gone bad (rare, but it happens).
Make sure no external drives or other unnecessary connections.
If the ram doesn't fix the problem, then you could also Zap the PRAM by holding down the Command + Option + P + R keys during boot up. Hold down the keys until the Mac goes through 3 startup chimes, then just release the keys and continue to boot normally. Check your clock settings if it boots.

Shut down your computer and disconnect all peripherals (keyboard & mouse if pertinent) from your computer. Now reboot.
If the Mac starts up normally, shut it down again and then plug in one of the peripherals (keyboard or mouse first) and start up your computer again. If it does so successfully repeat the process, adding one peripheral at a time until your Mac acts up. At that point, disconnect the last peripheral you added, reboot your Mac and search the peripheral vendor's website for an updated driver.
If no driver exists or the problem remain after installing the new driver, try a different cable or a different port on your Mac.
If none of the above works, again disconnect all peripherals from your Mac, hold down the "shift" key to start up in "Safe Boot" mode.
If the Mac starts up correctly, restart without pressing the "shift" key.
If your computer still does not start up properly, shut it down and restart it while holding down the Apple+Option-P-R keys; keep holding "all 4 keys" down until you hear the startup sound "twice."
If none of the above work Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk.
(If Disk Utility cannot repair, you will need a stronger utility (3rd party) - Diskwarrior or Techtool PRO)
Restart your computer when done.

Remove any 3rd party ram.
Reinstall Leopard - This will install a "fresh" copy Leopard without archiving old system files but leaves the rest of your files in place.
If you still want to restore your computer to factory level...
Start up from your install disc, go to Disk Utility and select the disk and click erase - to securely erase data click Security Options and Erase Free Space which will entirely wipe your disk, overwriting it with zeros so that no data is recoverable.

Language packs seem to break spell-check language selection

I suspect this is a bug, but maybe I am doing something wrong, so I'll ask here before submitting a bug report.
I have Thunderbird 31.2.0 installed on OS X Mavericks. I am pretty sure it is the en-GB version, but I have several language packs installed, including the (presumably redundant) en-GB pack. I also have installed (and sometimes uninstalled) the add-ons "Quick Locale Switcher" and "Simple Locale Switcher" at various times to switch the user interface language. (The reason I have included the two is, I had the "Quick" switcher first, and suspected what I was seeing might be a bug in the add-on, so I switched to the other.)
Now, the symptom. When the user interface language is set as en-GB, the spell-checker language choice in the "Preferences" menu (I guess "Options" in Windows, and I don't know what in Linux) is respected - I can type an email in one language, stop, switch the spell-checker language half way through, and the real-time spell-checking is then by the new language exactly as I would have expected. But, when the user interface language is anything other than en-GB (I haven't tried en-US, but I have tried German and Russian), the spell-check language follows the user interface language, and changing the spell-check language option in the "Preferences" menu has no effect whatsoever on anything.
This problem persisted even after I removed the two language-switching add-ons. Then, I removed all the language packs (which forced my user interface back into en-GB), and magically the spell-check language selection started working again.
So I am thinking the problem is driven by the user interface being from a language pack. When the user interface language matches the original install language, the spell-check language selection works; when the user interface language is something else, the spell-check language selection is ignored, and the actual spell-check language follows the user interface language.
The "Simple Locale Switcher" does not seem to allow the user interface language and the spell-check language to be switched independently, but "Quick Locale Switcher" does. However, this feature doesn't seem to work, nor does switching the spell-check language through the Thunderbird Preferences rather than the add-on (unless the user interface language is the default en-GB).
Has any one else seen a problem like this? Is there a way to fix it? (Maybe futz with the language settings on the other side of the "Here Be Dragons" warning?)

Before chasing dragons, right click in the body of a mail in the compose window and set the spell check language there. I have no idea if it will work, but it might add to the over all body of knowledge for a bug report.

10.3.9 to 10.4 upgrade, hanging after language selection on initial setup

xserve was on 10.3.9. i ran the 10.4 upgrade dvd. server rebooted and gave me the language selection dialog. i selected 'english' and continued. 'welcome to os x' window appears momentarily with blue progress bar which finishes. this window disappears and then the screen is all blue with a spinning wheel that goes on forever.
i rebooted and tried again. same result.
i booted from install dvd. repaired permissions. renamed /Library/StartupItems folder to 'StartupItemsDisabled'.
rebooted and same result.
now the installed dvd will only let me do an 'erase and install' which i'd prefer not to do. this server is hosting a filemaker pro server installation.
any suggestions?

Hi
You could also try target disk moding the XServe to another mac that has a DVD drive and try from there. Make sure you have a fallback position before trying this as Daddy has already suggested if the disk is bad you might get it installed but subsequently have boot problems with your Xserve.

HT4061 ipad doesn't move beyond language selection brand new

help I am a teacher with new Ipad2 and I have charged the thing, but it doesn't move past the language selection. I have a class to learn about it in a couple of hours but I can't get it to respond. I have looked up troubleshooting and done the on off, pressing the on/off, holding the home and on/off for several seconds...... help please!

Switching between Acrobat DC / XI window and another application - cursor selection bug (video and test files attached)

When I have Acrobat XI or DC open along side InDesign (or other programs like Acrobat or Word), I run into a bug where upon switching from InDesign to Acrobat, the mouse cursor automatically selects a bunch of text in the Acrobat PDF with a spinning beach ball, and I have to click around multiple times to release it from whatever text it has selected. It is annoyance I noticed in a few versions of Acrobat now, and I had hoped the bug would be fixed in DC. The only way to prevent this from happening is to click anywhere else on the Acrobat window (eg the menu bar or the side tools panel, but not the PDF itself).

Note that no clicking is taking place when switching windows from InDesign to Acrobat - the text in the Acrobat window is being selected automatically by the bug.
If you watch the video carefully, you will also notice that the Acrobat window does not look like it is taking focus during the selection bug - it only takes the focus after clicking around multiple times.

Thanks for the reply. I think the issue is just confined to Mac machines + Adobe products (this issue doesn't occur when I switch from Word Preview 2016, or Office 2011). I can confirm this issue occurs on more than one Mac as well.

It's almost as if the text manipulation / selection from InDesign is carrying over to the Acrobat window, interrupting the normal focus it should get on first click...
Edit: It just occurred with Spotify - Switched from Spotify to Acrobat, with a scanned image PDF. The rectangular selection tool tries to grab a region of the image several times before focus returns to the Acrobat window. It also just happened after manipulating images and text in Word 2016 Preview and Word 2011.

Upgrading to leopard- stops after language selection

Well, I'm on my uncle's G5 imac, and I said I would update his OS (he is currently running 10.4.11) to 10.5.5, so we booted up the disk, and after the language selection, it tells us that we cannot install this OS.
It says the error occured when creating a file called asav, whatever that is.
If anyone wants to know more, has had this problem, or knows the solution, please help!

You don't need a patch you need to purchase a Leopard upgrade. You can get them from Apple or one of their resellers such as Amazon. Once you have the Upgrad DVD then you can upgrade your Uncle's machine. The link below is for Apple's UK store:

U2 iPod 20GB Is *Stuck* At "Language" Selection

It's stuck and I'm stuck ...
Subject cranky music device was last used approximately 10 days ago. It had sat for a day or so and the battery appeared to be drained, so I placed it into it's cradle (connected to my XP system via firewire) to charge. It appeared complete, no "do not disconnect" message, so I did, and found it to be "stuck" at the "Language" selection screen.
I've done the "Five R's" more times than I care to think about. It goes through the "restore" process from the Updater just fine, and even acts as if it's downloading songs to it, because you can see it counting off songs in iTunes, but when all is done; it's back to the "Language" screen. No amount of "careful touching" on the click-wheel will make anything happen. And I can't say that the click-wheel itself is bad, because it lets me do the reset stuff fine.
Is there any kind of "hardware reset" software out there for us PC types, that let's us mess with our iPod's mind? I'm game to try and play, because, well, I can.
Help ... I miss my music!

Has your iTunes been updated to 7.0, and did you then allow the 1.2 iPod firmware update to install?
Your symptom is very similar to the problem I had updating my iPod to 1.2 (on Mac OS, not Windows). The songs would sync, and the song list and all the iPod information would show up in iTunes (after I reset the iPod while docked). But as soon as I disconnected, the iPod would freeze after about 5 seconds (usually still on Language Selection, but sometimes one or two clicks past that, if I was quick).
I ended up restoring the iPod firmware to version 1.1.2 (found the iPod Updater software for 6/28/06 on the support web site--don't know if the Windows version is available there).
I'm sticking to the old version (of the firmware) until Apple gets a patch version of iTunes 7 out.

Right now I am installing the programs on my new 64 bits computer , which runs windows 8 in a language which is not english.
At the very beginning of the setup I noticed that it detected the language of sist. op. and that it would install cs6 in such language.
I am very, very ,very upset with this and I will tell you the reason : the best in terms of literature , pdfs books , tutorials , support forums ,etc is written in ENGLISH !
If I install cs6 I will have all menus , tools and resources in other language and it will be very cumbersome to work with it.
Perhaps with the best of the intention to make people feel comfortable with their own language you have made it this way.
But there are several other guys like me that want it IN ENGLISH.
As a long time user of photoshop I never worked in other language than english and I will never do it.
It looks like it is a new trend to detect the op sistem language , I have had the same problem with Nero Platinum 12 , and others.
Is there a way to install Cs6 in english ?
I have no idea whether adobe developers team read this forum but I will give my suggestion : don´t leave the setup to choose the language , this is dictartoship , be democratic and bring back the language selection menu.

The setup choice only defines the language for the EULA.
You download the version for whichever language you want the app to be in.

Language selection on support site partial impossible

Oh god, who had this idea with the language selection on Support and Download site?
Now i have purchased a wide screen-ThinkPad to reduce the horizontal scrolling but the new support site plays its own game.
If i want to select "United States English" i have no chance to see and select it:

The horizontal scrollbar appears as well as the language list after i clicked on "Germany -- Deutsch" at the top of the page.
The crazy "Feedback"-field in the lower right corner hides several languages to select.
If i move the cursor to the scrollbar the language list disappears. - Great, well done!
Why is it so difficult to use the visible part of the display? On the left hand there is more than the half screen size unused to display the language list!!
Please tell the web-programmer to test on a single - display ThinkPad!!!!! in the future but not with two displays and enlarged desktop or 21:9 display.

Hei. This is not shown on the website, itself. It is like this only in the file manager /public_html/www directory on the server I use. There the downloaded files
have the titles of the pages without these vocals. I´ve send a request to the webhotel company I use and the only answer I´ve got was not to use these vocals.
This can´t be a solution. I had to change the title of the pages on iWeb, like from
interiørdesign to interiordesign, f.ex. but this isn´t the way the word is written in norwegian. I am afraid I am not visible in search enginees (google)in norway (which) is the market I adress, because of this.
I have lounged my site since april 2010 and still I don´t appear in a search even in the 20th page or something.

Netflix Language selection

Ok, I've looked at some of the posts, all great posts. But, none answer my question. I have the Apple TV And I do not have a Apple TV remote control. I use the remote app on my iPad to control the Apple TV.. I'm a huge Anime fan and some are in Japanese with the option to watch in English Dub. It defaults and starts up in Japanese and I don't know how to use my Remote App to select the English versions of the shows I want to watch. Does the remote app have the ability to do language select?

I just got off the phone with Netflix support. Specifically for Iron Man 2 and one of the Transformers movies it's a known issue. There is a temporary fix:
1. Sign in to netflix.ca
2. Change your account settings for video quality to anything except Best/HD.
And that's it. I just tested it myself and it worked. He said you may have to wait an hour for the changes to come into effect, but I just logged out and then logged in to my Apple TV Netflix and it was done.
He also mentioned this is a temporary workaround and they are working on it. Basically when they rent movies for use, they are given a package of different qualities and languages and they accidentally put the French HD in the English HD "slot".

In that Report I have created Basic Sets, Single sets and Multi Sets for G/L Account.
I need to output this Report in two different language.
1) Engish
2) Chinese
But I need to put the option on Selection Screen for Language Selection (whether English or Chinese).
How to add this option on Selection Screen. Please Guide me soon.

But when I hev created the sets, I have given the description of G/L Accounts in English. But when I will run the Report using Cinese as Logon language, how output will come in Chinese.
1) Is there a need to maintain /L Accounts in Chinese language.
2) or Shall i create the sets by giving description for G/L Accounts in Chinese If Yes then how to hadndle at run time..
please guide I am new to Report writer.

Hi, I was told that there is a field for language selection in the business partner master data. But I don't see any.
Does anyone know where it is, if it exists at all?
I'm using B1 2005A SP01 PL39.

Hi,
First you have to enable Multi Language Option in SAP Business One. To do so go to Administration > System Initialization > Company Details > Basic Initialization and tick the box for Multi Language Support.
After that you can see the language option in your Business Partner.
