Lap 1121N can't join 5508 controller

hi, i'am trying to configure an AP1121g on my controller wlc5508 7.2 but i'am facing a compatibility issue. please confirm that this access point is supported by this wlc best regards bayrem
best regards

It's not the WLC you have to worry about when checking AP compatability, it's the release of code.
The last version the 1121 is supported on is 7.0.235.0.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/release/notes/crn7_0_235_0.html#wp784122
Remember to check the release notes of the software you are wanting to upgrade to for AP/WLC compatabilty as well as what features have been introduced.

    One is mesh the other is non mesh. So changing the code or setting up the ap as mesh would fix your issue. Either could of been the wrong ap purchased or the wrong image placed on the ap. the thing now is that you have to put the ap in local mode and delete the mesh files in flash. This will prevent the ap from still thinking its mesh.

  • Old famous problem - AP LAP1142N can't join the controller - 4402, please participate, let's make a good guide!

    Hello folks,
    I really feel sorry for bringing up this discussion again. I wouldn't dare to ask this question if I find someone's clear cut suggestion/solution or an overview giving a detailed step-by-step procedure. People just suggest jumping through so many  hoops like resetting the AP or converting it back to standalone mode and then back to LWAPP.
    Hence I have so many questions and hope that we can make a good guide covering all possible problems.
    1) AP was originally running a standalone image.  I booted it into a so-called ROMMON or AP mode (ESC is the right key to make it boot into this mode)
    I found a recovery image in its flash - c1140-rcvk9w8-mx. I made the AP boot from it by using "set" command and I see that it start booting using this recovery image. Here goes the question. Do all AP settings matter ? E.g. when I run "set" command from AP I see the following:
    ap: set
    ?=
    DEFAULT_ROUTER=10.0.0.1
    Default_router=10.9.99.1
    ENABLE_BREAK=yes
    IP_ADDR=10.0.0.1
    IP_AddR=10.9.99.9
    MANUAL_BOOT=no
    NETMASK=255.255.255.224
    NEW_IMAGE=yes
    PWR_INJECTOR_DETECT=0016.c7fa.b394
    RELOAD_REASON=9
    ROM_PERSISTENT_UTC=1014941470
    TERMLINES=0
    netmask=255.255.255.0
    2) How would do something like "write erase" or even recover the enable password while being in AP mode? Do I really need to do it ? What I see next makes me believe there's something with the AP configuration (particularly SSH) that prevents an AP join WLC.
    3) The AP is powered on, connected to the switchport on the same L2 VLAN where WLC management interface. Then it boots and gets an IP address from the DHCP server located on the other switch.

    Here comes the question, why do I see this on the console (pay attention at "transport input ssh" line)? Does it have anything to do  with an error for DTLS ?

    4) Do I have to connect the controller ap-manager interface to the network or I can rely on the AP find the WLC via its management interface. I have never worked with 4400 series controllers. Just started with 5500 and they don't have the ap-manager interface.
    Cisco guide says: "The management interface is also used for layer two communications between the WLC and access points", so I can safely assume that it is enough. Moreover I can ping the AP from the WLC while connected to WLC via SSH and its management interface.
    5) And finally, what's wrong with the discovery? This is what I see on the controller while debugging capwap packets:

    i can't join LAP to WLC in difference subnet now i create 2 interface [management / ap-manager]

    ap-manager3 : 192.168.3.2 / 24 vlan 12
    connect with core switch 3 interface [access port vlan same wlc]
    or how create wlc interface for join with LAP please advise me or send capture screen for me to create all interface
    Thank you for best support.

    I created a video actually how to configure option 43 on my site.
    http://www.my80211.com/cisco-wlc-labs/2009/7/4/cisco-dhcp-option-43-configuration-nugget.html
    So when you fire up an AP it goes through a few steps to find the controller.
    1) It does a broadcast and if your APs are on the same VLAN as your apmangers/managment then she will connect
    2) If it isnt on the sanme vlan it will attempt to reslove CISCO-LWAPP-CONTROLLER or CISCO-CAPWAP-CONTROLLER. This is where you would need to create an A-record in your DNS server and reslove it to your MANAGEMENT controller IP address
    3) Also Option43. When your AP gets an IP address, you can add option 43 to the scope. Option 43 again tells the AP where to find the controller.
    Now you can do a manual prime to these as well. Extend your managment vlan to a switch and have the APs join. Once they take the download and config they will know the controllers ip address. And then you can deploy them on different vlans and they will join ...
    Does this make sense?

  • AIR-CAP1602i cannot join a WLC 5508 controller

    Hello,
    I'm managing a large number of access points on a Cisco wlc 5508 controller.
    We've recently purchased a bunch of new AIR-CAP1602I-E-K9.
    note that we already have AIR-CAP1602I-E-K9 and other models in production.
    These A.P are not able to join the controller for some reason, I've tried a lot of different things but I am now at a loss.
    I have checked the regulatory domain, upgraded the FUS, manually upgraded the software version of the LAP to match the version on the other A.P.
    I even downgraded/upgraded the WLC code (version 7.4.x and 8.0)
    I use the dhcp option 43 to to send the controller IP.
    Here are the info that can help:

  • LAP not joining the controller

    Gents
    I have 1 AP out of ten not joining the controller. I connected the access point to the network and I checked its boot. the access point reaches LWAPP Discovery" and then give me console input. I hard reset the access point and I hard coded an IP address for the AP the AP joins the controller, but when I reset it to assign it to another controller it did not join again.
    why the discovery process is not showing the DHCP option 43 configured and DNS for CISCO-LWAPP-CONTROLLER configured on the DNS. All the access point is operating normally except this one. it has many certificate inside, why a hard reset did not work to solve the problem?
    Please advise
    Thanks,

    Does the LAP have a valid IP address?
    Can the LAP ping the WLC managment IP address?
    Console into the LAP and in enable mode, type the command "lwapp ap controller ".

  • Cannot join AP to 5508 controller

    Hi all
    We have an infrastructure with a Cisco 4402-50 controller. We've just installed another controller, a 5508, and WCS as an "umbrella" to control the systems.
    I have trouble joining some AP's to the 5508 controller. Note that all AP's connect fine to the older 4402 controller. It seems that our older AP's join fine, but the newer 1142 models just won't join. As far as as I can tell both controllers have exactly the same configuration (except for IP-adresses and such of course), I've even used configuration templates in WCS to ensure this.
    If I go to Monitoring-->Statistics-->AP join on the 5508 controller, it says that the reason is "RADIUS authentication is pending for the AP". I don't understand this, because I've not set up any RADIUS authentication for AP's (only clients). I use MIC's and a local MAC database on the controller to authenticate the AP's.
    Btw, the software controller version is 6.0.188.0.
    Thanks in advance for any response!

    Hi leolaohoo, and thanks for your response.
    I've tried to configure the 5508 as primary, but that didn't cut it.
    However, I've just fixed the problem by upgrading the firmware on the 5508 to 7 (ED), that - for some reason - did the trick.
    This problem is now solved.

  • Getting disconnected randomly (5508 controller, 3300 series LAPs)

    I am at one of our remote offices and I am noticing my laptop, despite excellent signal strength is periodically losing IP connectivity on the wireless network.  When it drops, all of my IP connectivity stops (pings fail, RDP sessions "await reconnection", etc...).  The lower right corner still shows I'm connected to the hidden WPA2 Enterprise SSID.  The only way to reconnect is to select disconnect on it, then click connect again.  Immediately everything IP based starts working.
    There is a 5508 controller in the headquarters.  The site I am at has a 30mbps fiber point to point WAN to the headquarters.  This site has 2 x 3300 series LAPs which are very good coverage.  H-REAP mode is on so traffic terminates at the local office because it is more efficient than traversing the LAN twice for things like local file and print sharing, dhcp, proper active directory sites and services mapping, etc...
    The 5508 has a 2008 R2 server running NPS to do radius authentication and it verifies a domain certificate.  To be on the wireless you have to be a member of the domain.
    Seems to not give me any problems at the home office so any idea's?
    On the 5508 I see this around the times I lose IP connectivity:
    *Dot1x_NW_MsgTask_4: Jan 08 14:00:53.599: #DOT1X-3-INVALID_WPA_KEY_MSG_STATE: 1x_eapkey.c:861 Received invalid EAPOL-key M2 msg in START  state - invalid secure bit; KeyLen 24, Key type 1, client 88:53:2e:xx:xx:xx

    On the NPS server (2008 R2) I just see my username granted access because it matches the network health policy.
    Laptop Sony VAIO SE2
    Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230
    Driver version 15.1.1.1 Date: 3/12/2012

    Well I'm going to try to move the EAP-Broadcast Key Interval back.  It was set to 3600 which in seconds equals 1 hour.  Seems like not only my laptop but others now have been reporting that every hour on the dot, they stop passing IP traffic.  The regular users just reboot, while people "in the know" disconnect and reconnect, and they are good for an hour.
    Towards the bottom of this thread here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3753111?start=0&tstart=0
    They suggested this.
    I ran this
    (Cisco Controller) >config advanced eap bcast-key-interval 86400
    Now when I show advanced eap I get this:
    EAP-Identity-Request Timeout (seconds)........... 30
    EAP-Identity-Request Max Retries................. 2
    EAP Key-Index for Dynamic WEP.................... 0
    EAP Max-Login Ignore Identity Response........... enable
    EAP-Request Timeout (seconds).................... 30
    EAP-Request Max Retries.......................... 2
    EAPOL-Key Timeout (milliseconds)................. 1000
    EAPOL-Key Max Retries............................ 4
    EAP-Broadcast Key Interval....................... 86400
    I just will take note if this fixes the problem or  not.  If it does not maybe I will return it back to the default 3600.
    Your idea of a hidden SSID in the clear to rule out auth issues is a good one, but security wise I don't want an open SSID - hidden or not for an hour in public places.  Sure I could throw it on a VLAN with just one server and run a continuous ping... but I'm at the home office now which never has this issue.
    Seems like when it's time for the key to be renewed, I'm thinking the renewal handshake at remote sites is just not making it back to the controller.  However the initial key handshake when you first boot up or associate to the SSID goes over the WAN no issue.  I only say this because at the home office where the WLC is physically located, there is no issue.
    The WANs are a minimum of 10mbps over a Ethernet Virtual Private Line which is a busness level service provided by Verizon.
    Some WLC info:
    Product Version.................................. 7.4.100.0

    Field Recovery Image Version..................... 6.0.182.0
    Firmware Version................................. FPGA 1.7, Env 1.8, USB console 2.2
    Build Type....................................... DATA + WPS

  • LAP 1240 won't join WLC across subnets

    I am having a problem getting LAPs that are in other subnets to join our WLC. If I take the LAP and place it on the same VLAN/subnet as the WLC, it joins as expected. If I move it to another subnet, I get the following:

    Can you provide more information such as:
    1. How many APs can the WLC4402 support and how many are currently joined?
    2. What is your WLC's firmware?
    3. Is there a possibility of a duplicate IP address in your network?

  • Third-Party access to AP health-information over 5508 controller

    Hello,
    Situation:
    Third-Party Tool (Whats up gold) has connectivity to a 5508 controller, only.
    There is no connectivity to the remote LAP access-points from the third-party tool.
    Is it possiply to get the health information (AP available or not) over a controller via SNMP?
    Sven

    Just to elaborate on what Steve is saying:
    The SNMP monitoring of APs is still through the WLC itself. You would be pulling this information out of the WLC not via reachability to the AP itself from your tool.
    Or you could use Whatsup for just an IP reachability (ping) of the AP which would require interaction with the WLC.
    Can Whatsup be a trap receiver? I believe the WLC will send TRAPs for AP up/down events which I would think you could query off of.....

  • 5508 Controller & Muliticast

    have a Cisco 5508 controller (version 6.0.199.4) that when I enable global multicast mode it will work for an hour or two and then it will kill the network.  All internet both wired and wireless, access to server everything dead.  I then have to directly connect to the service port and disable the global multicast mode.  Then two reasons for enabling it are Docs2Go and LanSchool both require multicast to be enabled.  I have it enabled on our wired network and it works OK there.  I am probably just missing something stupid.  Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    On the Controller tab.
    so if you're not setting a multicast address, then you are running in Unicast mode.
    Multicast - Unicast - This is the easiest method to use.  When the WLC receives a Multicast packet, it replays that packet to every AP that is connected.   Now this does work, but can be very network intense, as every AP gets  the stream.  So if you have 100 AP, there are 100 streams, 300 AP 300  streams.
    Mulicast  - Multicast - This is the better method to use.  With this method, the  AP will join to a multicast group, that you configure, preferably in the  239.x.x.x administratively scoped space.  Now when the WLC gets a  mutlicast packet, it replays it once to the group.
    Now,  the WLC side is easy.  Select Mutlicast - Multicast and configure your  group, each WLC in your mobility group should use a unique address.  For  the WLC you are done.
    HTH,
    Steve

  • Can't join clients to domain in Server 2012 R2 Datacenter

    I have done the searching.  I have installed 2012 Datacenter 64bit.  No problem.  I installed the Ad Ds role and elevated it to a domain controller.  I installed DHCP and DNS roles.  I now want to join a client computer to this new
    domain in the server.  (it's the only domain).  However, nothing I try works.  I get the message:
    "An Active Directory Domain Controller (AD DC) for the domain "DGR.MINE" could not be contacted."
    Ensure that the domain name is typed correctly.
    If the name is correct, click Details for troubleshooting information"
    Details:
    The error was:  "This operation returned because th teimout period expired."  (error code 0x000005B4 ERROR_TIMEOUT)
    The DNS servers used by this computer for name resolution are not responding.  This computer is configured to use DNS servers with the following IP addresses;  192.168.1.200
    Verify that this computer is connected to the network, that these are the correct DNS server IP addresses, and that at least one of the DNS servers is running.
    In my 2012 Server the DNS address is set to 192.168.1.200
    In my client computer the DNS address is set to 192.168.1.200
    The server and the client are both connected to a simple switch, so I'm using straight through Ethernet cables.  I've tried crossover for client to server connections also, but no luck there either.
    This should be a simple process.  Can someone with patience give me a step-by-step on setting my server to a domain controller, DNS server, assigning the DNS address, and what else I need to do to allow a client to connect?  Then can I get the
    same wonderful help in connecting the client to the server?  I wouldn't ask for such detail, but I'm needing to check to see where I messed up, if indeed I can find where.
    Thanks very much.

    Make sure that the machine you are trying to join to your new domain has access to the domain (can ping the IP address of the domain controller) and has set itself to point to the IP address of the domain controller
    as its DNS server.
    Hi, Tim
    I can ping my domain controller, but not quite sure about how to set itself to point to the IP address of the domain controller as its DNS server. where do I do it? Thanks in advance.
    my sql keep dropping out the domain for some reason, I cant see any domain user account and the location is not entire directory anymore on my sql server even the domain name appears there. so I decide to take it off domain officially and rejoin later, but
    failed to rejoin and gives me an error msg just like that.
    Regards
    Linda

    Hello
    we had this problem too. I've figured out that the AP's which came factory preloaded with the
    LWAPP image version
    PRE { font-family: "Liberation Serif",serif; }P { margin-bottom: 0.08in; }
    8.0.72.236 and 15.3(3) JA (without 1)
    Version 15.3(3)JA

    remained stuck on

    In our case we wanted to use the DNS Entry CISCO-CAPWAP-CONTROLLER.domain.name to discover the controller. As older APs (1240) were able to connect I tried with the recovery image (downloaded on Support)
    15.3(3)JA1 containing
    PRE { font-family: "Liberation Serif",serif; }P { margin-bottom: 0.08in; }
    Version Suffix: k9w8-.153-3.JA1 8.0.110.0
    Image Name: ap3g2-k9w8-mx.153-3.JA1
    Version Directory: ap3g2-k9w8-mx.153-3.JA1
    Ios Image Size: 11407872
    Total Image Size: 13496832
    Image Feature: WIRELESS LAN|LWAPP
    Image Family: AP3G2
    Wireless Switch Management Version: 8.0.110.0
    with this image the AP could join the Controller via DNS.
    So If you have an AP preloaded with Image 15.3.JA (without 1) try this:
    ping CISCO-CAPWAP-CONTROLLER.localdomain  as stated by mykhuzaimi above
    OR
    capwap ap controller ip address <IP-address> as stated by mykhuzaim above
    set option 43
    Load image ap3g2-rcvk9w8-tar.153-3.JA1.tar
    Unfortunately all workaround require manual interventions......
