Lap top pavilion dv 7 shutting down Error 908 cooling fan not working

Since two days my HP pavilion dv 7 lap top has been heating up. I started getting warning notice error 908. One of the cooling fans apparnetly is not working properly and the system is shutting down.

If the operation has slowed you might also want to check the hard drive. Go back into the BIOS and look for the hard drive diagnostic test and run it. If the laptop came with Windows 8 you can also go into the "enhanced" diagnostics which is easier to use, with mouse support and such. Tap F2 as you power up instead of F10. You can run a whole bunch of diagnostics in there like memory and hard drive and DVD drive.  Let us know the results.

  • G4 MDD/FW800: shut down and restart commands do not work

    Hey all,
I've done some searching here and on the internet in general and haven't turned up anything useful.
Suddenly my G4 no longer shuts down when I select "shut down" from the Apple menu. The "Restart" command also does not work.
What happens is this: The machine goes through the normal process of quitting all apps that are open and then just hangs once there's nothing left (no menu bar, no dock) but the desktop picture. I have to touch and hold the power "button" on my ADC display to shut the machine down.
The machine is set to start up every weekday at 7AM but does not do this any longer.
I've run TechTool Deluxe; the Apple Hardware Diagnostic CD (that came with my G4); I've replaced the backup/clock battery; reset the PMU (by pressing the PMU button following Apple procedure). I've re-seated all 4 memory DIMMs. I took out the third-party USB 2.0 card.
    No effect.
Coincidentally, all this happened immediately after I played Halo for the first time in over a year. My Mac worked fine. Then I decided to play Halo. After quitting Halo the Mac wouldn't shut down via the "Shut Down" command.
    Weird.
One other note: After running the extended hardware test from the CD, the "Shut Down" button worked.
Am I looking at an OS issue? I'm dreading having to re-install the OS. I've never had to so this on an OS X Mac. This is the FIRST time I've had any problems with this Mac-- I suppose a trouble-free 6 years is a pretty good run, but I can't easily afford a new Mac right now, no matter how much I'd like to get a new iMac.
    A few details:
    Mac OS X 10.4.11
    2GB memory
    Generic USB 2.0 card
Additional HD on the 66MHz bus
    Thanks for any suggestions!
    -Brian

I created a new account with admin access. The "shut down" command didn't work then, either.
I checked out the activity monitor and syslogd was using 0.00% CPU.
    This is driving me nuts!
I want to clarify something I mentioned earlier: When booted from the Hardware Diagnostics CD, I was able to shut the machine down by clicking on the "shut down" button on the diagnostics dialog window.
That makes me thing that something in the current installation of the OS is messed up. (Thanks to Halo?)
Fortunately the computer and all apps seem to run fine-- I work on this computer all day running Adobe apps. It's just the shutting down at the end of the day that's problematic. My concern is that this is symptomatic of a more serious problem.
Perhaps reinstalling the OS is the next step?
Thanks for your suggestions so far-- I greatly appreciate it!

  • MBP will not shut down, also F keys etc. not working. Help?

Hello, must preface that I am not a very computer-savvy person, so please explain as if to a four-year old.
My MBP is about 4 years old, but has been working great all that time. Suddenly, a problem.
I realized that most of my F keys have ceased working, such as turning on the backlit keyboard, adjusting screen brightness, and adjusting volume. I thought a restart would fix it, but my machine will not restart or shut down. I click to request it, but nothing happens. I also try to view "about this mac" from the apple-icon menu (wanted to provide that info for this entry), but the spinning beach ball of doom appears for a moment, then vanishes, and the panel with the info does not open. Also, some of my hot corners have stopped working. Otherwise, it works fine. All my software works, and no sudden crashes.
I haven't installed any new software recently, or done anything out of the ordinary to the MBP, for a few months at least.
I haven't forcequitted the machine, tried to start in safe mode, or started while pushing command, R, P, option, or anything else. I did clear the caches and ran disk utility to repair permissions... then saw another post online saying I *shouldn't* do that stuff. Doh.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this? Obviously, the machine is out of warranty, I do have the disks that came with the machine, and I run time machine regularly...but I'd rather not have to do a fresh reinstall of everything, if it can be avoided.
Any help would be much appreciated.

"I haven't forcequitted the machine, tried to start in safe mode, or started while pushing command, R, P, option, or anything else."
    do command-option-p-r
if that does't do it reset the smc.

  • Shut down without warning @ 30% , firewire not working , sleep mode problem

    Hello!
I seem to have a combination of problems in which I believe that somehow they must be related altogether. I would appreciate any advice you may have on the cause of these problems and/or any solutions. Here's a detailed list of the problems:
    1. The computer shuts down without warning at about 30% battery.
    2. The Firewire doesn't seem to work when I try to connect my external HD.
    3. The firewire Bus data is not shown on the System Profiler.
    4. The sleep mode doesn't work; if I press the "sleep" icon, it doesn't respond to it.
    5. When I close the lid and open it again, the screen remains turned off which requires me to force shut down the computer every time. Yet, it seems that its only the screen that does not want to come back up, the unit seems operational.
    6. The sleep light indicator does not pulse when lid is closed, it stays on.
Actions taken:I have tried resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU) to no avail. Have the battery update. Have reset the PRAM.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Well it is either blocked, has a bad BIOS setting or the fan is dead and needs to be replaced. Try sticking a bent-out paperclip in the grille to hold the blades and blast some strong compressed air in there. Also try a hard reset....remove battery and AC charger and hold down power 30 seconds then plug in and try again. Also go into BIOS (F10) and set BIOS to default settings. If that does not work it has to be disassembled and the fan replaced.

HI:  Recently, I uninstalled all data on my data [D:] drive, in attempt to create more space, as I was save my backups there, wasn't a notice create more physical space, I do not know HOW.    Remain so a problem.
Then I compounded that, realizing I removed all HP original emergency files, so in thos 4 categories, I more or less have no files/folders, nor ID bytes.
That being in order..  $recycle bin; Scotty-PC,  System Vol. Info.,  Medial ID.BIN,   Altho in #1..I have 1 File - 129 bytes.    The recent date of change was..25/11/2014....of my indeed dirty deed.
I now better realize HP original message/warning not to uninstall any of these 4 files, all required for emergency recovery, known in some order as::::  Recovery, $Recycle Bin, boot, p,  PC-Dr., ?,  pcdr, or Preload.
Without these files there is no system recovery, no I didn't make an original recovery boot, at least I don't recall, I can check my elsewhere filing plc. to confirm that.
Are there any reasonable suggestions to this matter.
I am   NOT   in any immediate state of emergency,   my HP Notepad is more or less working ok, a little slow, but I'm uninstalling programs, that I do not need.   I have a  upgrade   Vista,  to Win. 7, H. Welcome to the HP Community Forum.
    From what I can gather:
You have accidentally removed your Recovery Drive Partition,
You are not in any immediate danger of losing the rest of your data,
You are continuing to remove chunks of data from some other part of your computer -- presumably the C drive at this point
You have never made any Recovery Disks
You have apparently not used a third party software to make a Disk Image of your data
You would like to have a Recovery Disk set
There are a number of dv9500 systems, none of which have Recovery Kits available from HP any longer.
    What to do?
    =======================================================================
    Recovery Kits
You might depend on these folks to provide a Recovery Kit -- they specialise in Recovery Kits for vintage HP computers.  The cost is only a bit higher than you might have paid for the Kit from HP had it been available.
I cannot check the specifics for you without the Product Number -- you can check for yourself to see if they have what you seek:
Recovery Kits for Vintage HP Computers
    Computer Surgeons HP Recovery Center
The company provides an 800 number you can call with any questions.
    =======================================================================
    Disk Image Software
Barring a purchased Recovery Kit, or in ADDITION to it, you might try using some Third Party software to make a Disk Image of what you have now before you lose it.  That way you can at least get back to where you are at the moment.  That you have some extra bits of software on the computer does not matter as much as the fact that the computer does, in fact, RUN and operate.
There are a LOT of companies that specialise in this sort of software.
    One such:
Redo software is NOT Windows dependent and can be used with Both Windows and Linux Operating Systems.
Redo Backup – Recovery – Bare Metal Restore
    Edits 04-Jan-2015
I suggest that you provide for the following stop-gaps to protect your data and access to your computer:
Prior to making changes to your computer, for example remove programs or make other changes:
Create a Restore Point:   Create a Restore Point – Win7 OR  Create a restore point Win8
As a matter of protecting your data:   You might consider that having an extra copy (or two) of your most critical files is a good idea.  Placing those files on a USB drive -- or two -- and then placing that Drive into a Safe location (locally and away from your primary residence) might be a very good idea.  Why do this?  Computers have a habit of failing when you least expect it -- and at the worst possible time.
HP PCs - Backing Up Your Files (Windows 7)
Do not be the one locked out of your computer because you lost your password.  Do not be the one locked out of your computer because your account becomes unusable due to corruption.  The following was written for Windows 8.1 -- the logic applies to Windows 7 and the methods are similar.

    Hi
I think it's indicating to replace the fan and heat sink assembly.
It occurs due to overheating & this decreased performance.
Try to do a hard reset first.
You may try doing a COMPLETE HARD DRIVE TEST & COMPETE MEMORY TEST from BIOS soon after powering on the system & pressing F10 or F2.

Please read this post then provide some details.  How is the printer connected - USB, wired LAN, Wireless LAN, bluetooth? It appears the printer is losing communication with the computer breifly and appearing to be turned off.
What print mode are you using?  Fast Draft puts the most strain on the printer power supply.  If you are using Fast Draft make sure the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet and is not connected through a power strip of surge suppressor.

  • My Pavilion DMT-1000 shuts down immediately when it starts to boot up.

HP Paviliion DM4T-1000 running Windows 7 shuts down as soon as it starts to boot up.  It passes the startup tests, but it shuts down after about an hour doing the hard disk test.  It also shuts down from the boot menu after about an hour. The fan is running full speed at all times and the airflow is perfectly good.  I have tried reinitiating the BIOS by removing the internal battery and doing a hard reboot.  I have tried booting off of a CD and using the F11. Everything results in immediate shut down. Should the fan be running full speed immdediately?  How can I tell if the BIOS thinks the temperature is too high?  Is there a test point to monitor?  What else can cause a failure to boot?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the times of the log messages referring to boot times. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the time of the most recent boot when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time when you had the problem – the text, please, not a screenshot. For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time. If the problem is a crash or a shutdown hang, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down.
Edit out excessive repeats and personal information, if any.
If the log doesn't go back far enough in time, scroll down in the Console file list to /private/var/log/system.log.0.bz2. Search the archived log, and if necessary the older ones below them, for the same information.
    Step 2
    Do the same with kernel.log.
    Step 3
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please do not post shutdownStall or hang logs – they're very long and not helpful.

From previous experience 3 indicates a shutdown initiated by the SMC (System Management Controller) — hardware responsible for many low-level functions including power, sleep, lights, and fan activity.
    Try resetting it:
Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.

babowa, it seems like it is using Fuse & NTFS, so I don't think it's the classic WD + 10.9 mess, but extra WD tools & drivers can still break things MtTran.
MrTran, if you must use unsupported disk formats on your Mac you must also consider actually paying the developers that made the trial software.
It's probably a good idea to follow the developers removal instructions, reboot & then install one tool at a time.
MacFuse, FuseOSX, NTFS-3G are all likley to confict if you run older versions so you need to be sure you are using the latest version. I can't remeber which one depends on the other, so you will need to read the manuals.
When the disk is readable copy the data to another disk. You could probably do this from a Linux distro or Windows if OS X won't do it.
If you insist on only using the trial versions you will need to reinstall Mac OS, copy data off this disk & reformat it.
Is there any good reason for not using the Mac HFS extended format?
