Laptop and apple tv 2nd gen without wifi network
Hi experts, I need your help.
How can I share pictures and music without a wifi or wired network?
I have a laptop with wifi and apple tv 2 gen. I would like to connect apple tv and pc but I don't have a wifi or wired network.
I created a wifi network in "network and sharing center" in windows 7 (I see it on my cellphone), but I do not see it on the apple tv and I cannot connect.

You need a local network setup to use home-sharing. You won't be able to access any of the other features without internet access.

Apple TV (2nd gen) Support WiFi Captive Portals?
I can connect to the WiFi but cannot get to he Internet due to the WiFi captive portal. My iPhone/iPad connect fine. How can one do this via Apple TV? Btw, the provider doesn't support a MAC ACL. It's browser login or nothing.
Sorry, AppleTV does not support conncetion via a browser login.

Aperture 3 and Apple TV 2nd Gen
I'm trying out Aperture for the 30 day free trial.
I can get my Aperture albums to appear on Apple TV, but the Events also only appear in the same list format as the albums. I am used to the iPhoto events appearing in a nice grid-like pattern on Apple TV.
Is there a way to get the Aperture Events (or "Projects", I suppose) on the Apple TV in the same grid-like pattern as the iPhoto events?

Went to Aperture.
Changed away from current library and then back again.
That seemed to let iTunes pick up the trail leading to the library. -
IPhone 5 and iPad 2nd gen weak wifi pick up after iOs 8.0.2 update
Hi,
I have had my iPhone 5 since September 2012 when it first came out and had never have any problems with it with regards to picking up wifi signal. I had battery issues as the phone got older but it didn't really bother me and I had it sent over to Apple to have the sleep/wake button issue resolved about two weeks ago. Since then, I have purchased the iPhone 6 and gave my old iPhone to my husband. As I'm the one who deals with all the gadgets, I do the updating stuff. My iPhone 6 is on the latest iOs 8.0.2 and it doesn't have any problem whatsoever. My iPhone 5 and iPad 2nd gen (3g + wifi) also had the latest iOs update and both have recurring problems now. Both have problems picking up up wifi signals. Even when I have the iPhone 6 next to them, which has full bars (wifi), the two older gadgets are struggling to pick any signal at all. And if they actually get onto the internet, I only get 1 bar and the internet surfing on them are as sluggish as ever. The battery on the iPhone 5 has drastically gone downhill as well. I have tried to change the WPE/WPA2 connection on the router but it is still the same. I even tried to "Forget the network" and logged in manually again to no avail. The keychain thing on iCloud has been turned off but no change has been noticed. Is there anything else I can do to have this issue resolved? HT1947 Apple TV (2nd gen) and Remote App - no more connection
Since updating to the latest version of Apple TV (2nd gen) and Remote App for iPhone or iPad I can't connect any more. Worked for a short moment after restarting a few times but now no more. Must be a new bug, because it always worked before updating to iOS 5.1!
I tried with an iPhone 4S and and iPad 2.Hi and thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately this didn't solve the issue. I tried almost everything now:
- I rebooted the WIFI rooter
- I resettled the apple TV
- I removed the cables of apple tv for a minute (I have a switch anyway to cut power off completely)
- I killed the remote app on the iPhone and iPad a few times
- I removed my account settings both on the i-devices and apple tv for home sharing a few times and activated them again
All of the devices are in the same wifi network and every device can connect perfectly to the internet.
The screen on the iPhone/iPad always just shows that I should activate home sharing on iTunes on the computer or on the apple tv with my account (what I did as mentioned above)
Any ideas, someone from Apple maybe?

You should really read the manual.

Restore. When given the choice, choose to use backup.
"And how can I check to see if the pics and videos are on my computer somewhere first??"
They would only be where you put them. What program did you use to import them? Pics/vids taken with ipod are not part of the sync process at all. You should be importing them just as you would with any digital camera.
If you did not import them, then they are not on your computer. -

It appears that this is due to firmware corruption and you can fix it by using the micro USB cable and hooking it to iTunes. I have not tried it yet but supposedly several people were able to resolve their problem this way. If you do try it, let me know. I don't have the cable at this time. -
If I initially rent and begin watching a movie on my Apple TV (2nd Gen) can I later finish watching it on my iMac (registered with same iTunes account)?
The other way to do this would be to download all your rentals onto the Mac, then you can choose watch them on the Mac or Airplay them to the ATV.
At least that way you can switch back and forth as often as you like during the "watching" period AND have 1 month to begin watching it after you've downloaded it. -
I have an Apple TV 2nd Gen, iPad 2 and can't get the icon to appear when i swipe from left to right. What am I missing?
I am able to get the 'Home sharing' 'user and password on my Mac.
Also using IPad 2 I am able to get the ITunes to accept the user name and same password as the Mac.
However, the only way I can see the 'Home sharing; icon is in Music on the Ipad. When I tap on the Icon it asks for a password.
When I give the same password, it is rejected.
Help!!!!
JaxxdiggsPersonally I think the iOS devices are poor at reconnecting - Airplay establishes that a link is available but when the iPhone/iPad has been away from the house and rejoins the network i think AppleTV already thinks it's connected with a different IP address and fails to recognise it has joined the network again with new credentials.
Something along those lines anyway.
I find that a combination of restarting AppleTV, router and iOS device tends to fix it, but not for everyone.

Hi! I just update my apple tv 2nd gen to the new solfware but it only show the itunes icon on the tv and after shows nothing on the tv screen. What i can do to fix that?
Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device) -
Constantly being asked to set time and date (Apple TV 2nd Gen)
I am constantly being asked to set time and date on my Apple TV 2nd Gen. Has anyone had this problem? I get the screen with this message about 10-15mins after I connect to my home network. I connect, everything works fine, but then streamin, browsing stop and this screen appears. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you alleycat. I have two rental movies in my iTunes library in the rentals section top left of the window that have not been played. I have home sharing turned on on both my apple TV and my Mac. Both machines are completely software updated. I can see all of my owned movies in the Computer>Library>Movies section of the menus, but neither the rentals themselves nor a rental fouler are anywhere to be found on the apple TV. I dropped by the apple store on the way home from work and they suggested that it should be working just as you described, and suggested a restore, which I've performed. Still no rentals from the Mac library are visible on the apple TV. Any ideas?

I am using Apple ipod 2nd gen with IOS 4.2.1 . No i recently updated my IOS and all my apps were deleted. Now when i download IBOOKS it needs IOS 5. How do i get the apps which are copatible with IOS 4.2.1 or IPOS 2nd GEN??
You should always have your apps on your computer. If you have failed to keep a copy of the old app versions, then you cannot get them back at all.

I have this problem. The Apple TV (2nd gen) does not show up in iTunes under devices, and I really don't know why.
Mac OSX 10.6.5
iTunes 10.1
AppleTV 2nd gen with latest update installed
Network is a WiFi Airport Extreme (Mac and AppleTV are indeed on the same private network)
Airplay works, home sharing works fine. Remote App on iPad and iPhone works.
But the AppleTV is not showing up under devices.
I had a 1st gen AppleTV which I reverted to "factory settings" before unplugging. The 2nd gen ATV had the same name as the 1st gen at the beginning, but I changed it afterwards figuring it might be related.
Under iTunes > preferences I had the AppleTV tab. But I did read somewhere on Apple's site you have to "delete" the AppleTV from the list. So I did, and now the tab cannot be found anymore...
Can anyone help?

I believe I am correct as I've got new/old AppleTVs connected to 3 Macs and a dual boot Mac Pro currently, and the new unit has never appearede under devices.
.... I really HATE the interface organization right now. Why on planet earth do I have to go under "devices" -> "computer" -> "music" just to play some music?
You, me and many other AppleTV 1 users. I think they'd finally got it right in 3.02 for AppleTV 1 which is a much nicer user interface. Basically now the majority of the top level columns are unused by many people who don't rent but want to playback theit iTunes media.
I firmly believe Apple see this new AppleTV as a relatively cheap accessory for iPads/iPhones/iPods to show video/photos via Airplay on your TV without using a computer.
Secondly it's a vehicle for pushing itunes Store rentals, but for the majority of worldwide users they can only get Movie rentals, and Netflix is of no use bar in a few countries (US/Canada).
I would have much more preferred that a "music" tab (it also applies to all other tabs, movies, tv series and so on) and then just a list of all "home sharing" connected computers from which I could pick the one where the music is stored. Or even, and being Apple it surprises me they didn't implement it, just the list of the available music on my network, with a little tab indicating in which computer it is located.
Yes that would make absolute sense - a dynamic list of available content based on connected libraries that changes as new libraries appeared on/left the local network.
The new menu organisation is quite shoddy to me, ut many users new to AppleTV like it and rave about the devices not knowing what the old one could do - it's a good device don't get me wrong, but I still prefer the older units except for their power consumption and the fact I feel they are more likely to fail due to their high temps and mechanical hard drives.
But here I'm venturing FAR off topic.
