Laptop as 2nd monitor

A bit strange, but... I've got a new mac pro tower w/ a 23" Apple cinema display... by chance is there a way to connect my old Titanium laptop to the second (empty) video port in order to use the Titanium LCD as my menu monitor while I retouch on the main cinema display screen?
Thanks in advance.
douglas

It is technically possible.
There are a few windows only solutions available (see http://www.maxivista.com/ for example), but X has supported this via xdmx (http://dmx.sourceforge.net/) for quite some time now. See this article as well: http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/os-mltihed/index.html
Not sure if an osx port exists for xdmx, but a quick google for "use laptop as second monitor" returns a lot of results.
Not saying it's a practical solution, just that it is possible.

  • Can't run flash player in full screen on 2nd monitor

Hi all! I have a laptop with dual video displays. The main
display is the laptop's LCD and the 2nd display is a 19" LCD
connected via VGA cable. I want to let a Flash movie loop endlessly
on the second monitor while I continue to work on the laptop. When
I drag Flash Player 8 over to the 2nd monitor and start the movie,
I can hit maxmize and it will take up the entire 2nd montior as it
should...with the file options and boarder around as expected. I
then hit Ctrl-F to go full screen and it snaps directly to the
laptop's primary monitor. I tried it at work where my desktop has 2
displays and the same thing happens. I need to force Flash player
to run full screen on the 2nd monitor and cannot find a way to
accomplish this. Any help is appreciated because it's driving me
nuts. I can always make the external monitor my primary but then
the start button and all my icons move there too and that is not
    acceptable. Thanx!

Seriously? No one has any thoughts about this? I can't
believe I would be the first to come across this issue.

  • MacBook Pro performance issues w/2nd monitor and FCP7

I have this MacBook Pro bought brand-new in January 2010:
      Model Name: MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz
      Number Of Processors: 1
      Total Number Of Cores: 2
      L2 Cache: 6 MB
      Memory: 8 GB
      Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
and until today had never attached a second monitor to it. Today I hooked up my Samsung 24" to do some dual screen editing in Final Cut 7.0.3. I was unable to play back my video at full speed in the second monitor, and after a few seconds of skippy playback I'd get that error message about unable to play back video at full speed and to check my RT settings. I was using a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. My computer has no issues playing the video in the laptop's monitor at any resolution and any quality settings (I've never changed the RT settings or anything else in the menu ever but I tried every combination this time). I then tried using my TV as a 2nd monitor with an HDMI adapter. Same performance issues. I then tried my friend's newer 13" MBP 8,1 and it performed flawlessly with the same project & footage. I feel like my $3,000 computer should outperform a $1,200 one even if mine is a year and a half older. Any advice?
    Chris

Wow, you posted this perfectly to coincide with an identical problem, albeit using Logic Pro 9.1.5 rather than FCP.
Last week, I purchased a 23" external monitor to use alongside my "flagship" 2011 15" hi-res, 2.3 i7 Macbook Pro with 8Gb of RAM.
It is connected via a mini-DVI to D-sub analog (not that that should matter?) and all appeared fine.
The first issue I had was with my MBP's fan now running CONSTANTLY, when I have the second monitor attached. Even when the machine is completely idle.
When using the machine to record audio, this is a fairly hefty problem and not something I had anticipated - indeed why would I anticipate such a thing?
What is far, far worse though is that over the last few days I have had repeated problems with performance drop-outs and errors in Logic and I have trying to fathom out why. Realising that the only major system change made, was the above monitor connection, I ran some tests.
I restarted my MBP, no other apps were running and with my new 23" monitor attached acting as main display with MBP built in display on as secondary
I loaded up a fairly demanding Logic project which was hitting 40% to 60% CPU usage when using the built in MBP display last week
I ran activity monitor and had CPU usage history open
The above project now repeatedly overloads and playback halts in a given 8 bar section - with CPU at 80% most of the time
I disconnected the external display, no shut down, I just let the machine switch to the built in 15".
Started the same project, the same 8 bar section and hey presto - CPU usage back down to 40% to 60%
The above was reflected in the CPU usage history with the graph showing CPU use down by about a half, when running this Logic project WITHOUT the external display.
There is a very useful benchmark Logic project that has been used as a test by many users to gauge Logic performance on given Apple hardware.
The project has about 100 tracks pre-configured with CPU intensive plugins, designed to tax the CPU.
The idea is that you load up the project with tracks muted, press play and then unmute the tracks steadily until Logic us unable to play contiunously because of a system performance error.
On my MBP, with the external monitor NOT attached, I can play back around 50 of the audio tracks in this benchmark project.
With the monitor attached, I can get about 22 tracks playing.... which is actually a far worse a performance drop (-50% I think!?) than with the first example!
I did also try with just the external monitor attached and not the MBP display and performance was about 10% better than with dual monitors - so still extremely poor, to say the least.
This machine is the flagship MBP and has a dedicated AMD Radeon HD6750 GPU which should take care of most if not ALL graphics processing - I mean it's capable of running some pretty demanding games!
Putting aside the issue of constant fan noise, there is no reason AT ALL, why using an external monitor should tax the i7 CPU this way - it's not as though Logic is graphically demanding... far from it.
I am on 10.6.8, Logic 9.1.5, all apps up to date via "Software Update".
I will of course, be contacting Apple...

  • Can I use a 2nd Monitor at 4K resolution (quad hd, 3840 x 2160 pixels)

HP Envy TS 17 Notebook, Product # E4S19UALaptop is running Intel HD Graphics 4600, and I have 16Gb memory installed. I use a 2nd monitor all the time via the HDMI port - works great.  Both the laptop and the current 2nd monitor are running at 1920x1080 resolution (HD). I would like to attach a 4K monitor - (UHD-1) 3840x2160 resolution - 4 x "regular" HD (twice the horizontal and twice the vertical resolution). Will this laptop be able to operate the 4K monitor at 3840x2160 resolution (even at 30hz would be okay - not for games but rather for word processing, spreadsheets, software development)?  Don't want to invest in the fancy new monitor if the laptop cannot drive it! Here is an exampe monitor: Samsung 28 Inch Ultra High Resolution LED Monitor (U28D590D), available on Amazon.com. Thanks!

Thanks for the information! As a suggestion, I have a copy of that manual, and it does indeed state precisely the information that I needed. Funny thing is, I looked in the TOC and the Index for anything related to external monitors and HDMI, and there wasn't anything that pointed to that page.  Perhaps for future User's Manuals, the TOC and/or Index could include such references. Either way, thank you so much for the help! Also, for folks who are interested in higher resolution external displays, there is the option to use USB devices such as that from www.plugable.com to attach devices. I don't yet have their USB 3.0 4K compatible one, but I have been using their USB 2.0 HD compatible one for several years so that I can have 3 monitors (built-in, external, Plubable USB) - and it works very well. Flawless operation, though refresh rate is slow (not good for gaming). Which works for me, because it is mainly for surfing and email.

  • Windows xp extended desktop not showing up on 2nd monitor all of a sudden

I've used a 2nd monitor as my main monitor for my T61.  I powered down today to move to another location, when I reconnected to my usual 2nd monitor, the screen just comes up blue, the cursor jumps between my 2 monitors, but there is no Windows coming up on the external monitor 2.  Usually everything boots up automatically to both of my monitors.......I've gone into Windows XP display settings, extended the desktop - but still nothing - just blue with the cursor either on my laptop monitor 1 or jumping over to external monitor 2.  Help?

    Try this:
    1. Go to Display Settings and set the Display to setting 1. (Multiple Monitors) and exit settings.
    2. Press Fn and F7 until BOTH Monitors are Shown.
    3. You shouuld be able to select  Either or  Both Monitors in Sequence.
I replaced my BIOS Battery and had the same problem.

    Laptop:  L75-B7270

I am trying to use my TV as a second monitor using an HDMI cord.  No matter what I do, my laptop does not recognize the 2nd monitor.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled the display drivers so many times, rebooted, etc and it still not not recognize it.
Can someone please help me before I hurl this laptop out the window.
    Thanks!

  • In windows 2nd monitor says no input - what display drivers are used and how can I update them?

HI. I am using windows side of my macbook pro. Yesterday, for some reason, the computer quit recognizing my 2nd monitor. Nvidia is one of the drivers used but I have updated this and it is not working still. Someone said that I should contact the maker of the laptop, apple, and get graphics drivers from them. But I don't know how to do this. Help would be appreciated.

  • Helix can't boot without a 2nd monitor attached

    Hi,
I maintain a Helix (36984RU) that gets used for presentations.  It will not boot to Windows without a second monitor attached.   I can hear the fan spin up and the unit gets warm, but the screen remains blank.  The only thing I can do is to shutdown by holding down the power button.
When booting with a 2nd monitor or projector attached, the startup Lenovo logo appears on the 2nd screen and the laptop screen remains blank.  When the Windows login screen appears, it appears correctly on the laptop screen.  I've checked the Windows Screen Resolution page and it correctly shows the laptop monitor as the primary monitor.
This issue presents itself whether or not I disconnect the 2nd monitor prior to shutdown/restart, or whether I remove the 2nd monitor before restart.  It also does not make a difference if I start in tablet or docked mode.
I've updated the BIOS to version 1.29 and have checked that the boot display device is set to Thinkpad LCD, and not either of the two displayport options.
Any tips on this would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks!

I don't know what it is - I have Enable Transmit on the Program monitor to enable it to do so, and I can't go back to 7.0 or 6.0 as I'm now working on projects in 7.0.1 and don't want to keep chopping and changing.

  • 2nd Monitor issue

I've been using a 2nd Monitor (ViewSonic 1080p) with my MacBook for several years.  After recent upgrade to Snow Leopard, MacBook no longer recognizes the 2nd monitor in the Preferences.  Monitor/cables are fine and work with another laptop OK. Do I need a software upgrade?, or will I be forced to purchase an Apple monitor.  Puzzled

Here are the specs for your HP Pavilion p6-2029uk Desktop Computer. According to the specs this model has Intergrated AMD HD Graphics that have been disabled by the factory installed discrete PCI Express x16 AMD Radeon HD 6450. The DVI-D port and VGA port behind the "plastic covers" will not work unless the discrete graphics card is removed.
    Assuming the discrete AMD Radeon HD 6450 card has a DVD-I port and an HDMI port, you should be able to connect the monitors as follows;
    Computer > HDMI-to-DVI cable > HP 2011 monitor
Computer > DVI-to-VGA adapter > VGA cable > secondary monitor
    Alternatively, you could remove the discrete AMD Radeon HD 6450 card and use the integrated onboard DVI-D and VGA ports as follows;
Computer > DVI cable > HP 2011 monitor
Computer > VGA cable > secondary monitor

  • CONECTING A 2ND MONITOR

I'VE TRY TO CONECT A 2ND MONITOR TO MY TOSHIBA LAPTOP A665-S6086, IN ORDER TO WORK WITH TWO SCREENS, BUT WHEN I PRESS THE FN-F5 AND CHOOSE THE EXTENDED SCREENS, I CAN SEE BOTH MONITORS WITH THE SAME SCREEN , BUT THEY DON'T WORK INDEPENDENT, AS SHOULD BE. THE CURSOR APREARS IN BOTH MONITORS. IF I WANT TO WORK WITH EXCELL IN ONE MONITOR AND WORD IN THE OTHER IS NOT POSSIBLE. CAN YOU HELP ME WITH THESE, AND TELL ME WHAT CAN I DO IN ORDER TO HAVE 2 INDEPENDENT MONITORS.
    THANKS

Just to make sure I'm understanding, when set to extend, it's actually showing the exact same on both monitors? What other choices do you have with Fn+F5? If you select "Clone," does it behave the same?

  • Thinkpad T440s freezes with 2nd monitor via dock

Hi there - I have a strange problem with my Thinkpad T440s:
Connecting a 2nd monitor directly (VGA) works like a charm, however putting the Thinkpad into the docking station (with the 2nd monitor connected to the dock) freezes the system. Without the 2nd monitor the dock is working fine. When booting with the 2nd monitor connected to the dock, both screens stay black as soon as the kernel loads.
Is this a known problem / any ideas? Can I somehow help fixing this problem?
I know that I'm not the only one since I have found other people reporting this here: http://thinkpad-forum.de/threads/165520 … -und-Linux
They also provided an xorg.log (http://pastebin.com/Qk7nHVwt) which shows nothing suspicious, I guess...

Same issue with my T440p. Happens with VGA, DP & HDMI (haven't tested DVI) on the dock. Undocking unfreezes it. If X is running the X server freezes and consumes 20% CPU, if none is running a kworker process does that. Even with no monitor attached it will freeze when the builtin monitor wakes up from sleep (again, undocking helps).
Here's a stack trace from the frozen X (^C'd while it was frozen from waking up the display, gdb only reacted again after undocking):

Edit: "Solved" by returning the laptop. This issue plus the loud (and not well-controllable) fan and the lack of support for the fingerprint sensor (different from previous ThinkPad models, it's from Validity Sensors) just aren't worth the trouble.

  • Using 2nd Monitor Doesn't Reset When Switching To 1 Monitor Only

FF4 was displayed on my 2nd monitor off of my laptop.
I then powered-down and removed the 2nd monitor hookup.
After rebooting with only the laptop monitor, FF4 opens (twice) with only a tiny window just large-enough to display the red-yellow-green buttons. Fortunately, upon clicking the green button, it expands into a normal window.
    Just an FYI.

    It's a LacieIIblueIV monitor.
I delieted the files any still doesn't work.
I recall one coworker encountering this before, and he switched the monitor connection to the other output on the graphics card (dual monitor support) and it worked fine for him. Unfortuantely I tried this and still didn't work...

  • Clitching H264 Playback on 2nd monitor - 17" MacBook Pro/NVIDIA

I have used Keynote professionally for many years, and often use H264 compressed videos (that I have created in After Effects). This has always worked very well until the last few weeks when I noticed that every now and then there is a glitch in the playback of H264 movies when a 2nd monitor/video projector is attached.
Glitch description: A completely random flash/breakup of the image that lasts for single frame - similar to the old flash frame you used to get when playing back MPEG2 movies in PowerPoint. This does not cause the video to stop playing, but is annoying when using it in a profesional presentation. It is also completely random and occurs at least once a minute during playback. This only occurs on the new MacBook Pro's that have the NVIDIA graphics card. It does not occur when using the laptop's LCD display only - ie: no 2nd output used. It does occur on the laptop's LCD if a second display/projecter is plugged in. This does also not occur on my ATI equiped MacBook Pro 15" or my G5 or my iMac.
It appears to be a problem with the NVIDIA card.

    hi!
i got the same problem with the 15 inch 2.4 Macbook Pro and

  • Plugin opening on 2nd monitor

I have a 2nd monitor hooked up to my Macbook pro. I have the mixer on the 2nd monitor however whenever I open a plugin for the first time it always opens on the laptop screen, even though I open it from the mixer on the second monitor. Once I move the plugin to the 2nd screen it then always opens there. How do I change this behavior so that the plugins default to the second monitor? Thanks.

I use my Apple Cinema Display as my primary monitor. I do use the application frame though do not HAVE to. But I then have used all the pallets that I can open and have dragged them onto my laptop. So I can then use the F key to go to full screen on my ACD and still use the tab key to see all the pallets but can keep them on the laptop screen and use anytime during editing. This is the only way I can figure out how to have a full screen image and the tools on the other scree, the laptop.
I then use the F key only to go to a toolbar that may have some options needed. Like changing sponge from saturate to desaturate.
This seems to work the best. I then saved this desktop arrangement as Dual Monitor and can go to Essential or anything else when needed.
    Hope that helps...

  • Organizer 11 flashes continuously in 2nd monitor?

I just installed the trial version of Premiere Elements 11, which works fine on my primary monitor, but when I place Organizer on the 2nd monitor, the 2nd monitor screen flashes continuously.  Using Windows 7 with all updates; ATI Radeon HD 4290 with currrent drivers.  All other software, including other Adobe products, work fine on second monitor.  Searched Adobe site and Google without success.  Frustrated in Virginia.

    Welcome to the forum.
I see similar, even with the latest nVidia video driver, BUT in my case, my XP-Pro is the limiting factor. nVidia has not released an updated driver for my GeForce 8800M GTX chip FOR that OS.
With Win7, I would have thought that the latest Catalyst driver for your AMD/ATI card would not exhibit that flashing. However, there have been some recent posts (mostly to the Photoshop forum) on some recent issues with the latest AMD/ATI Catalyst drivers, and especially with PS CS 6. What is the Catalyst version that you have installed? In many of those display issue threads in the PS forum, the "fix" was to roll back to an earlier version. Also, are your two displays the exact same, with the exact same resolution?
PrE 11 (and PS CS 6, PrPro CS 6 and After Effects CS 6) relies more heavily on the video driver, than most other programs will.
In my case, my display is perfect with older PrE, PrPro PS and AE versions, but I get the flashing (and trails) in PrE 11. My fix will be to update my OS on the laptop (though a new laptop is being shipped with Win7), since nVidia has ceased support for my XP-Pro and that nVidia chip.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
