Laptop Audio volume very low

Hi Experts,
I bought my Inspiron laptop in January and was hoping for good sound quality based on the advertised Waves MaxxAudio. However I find the laptop volume is very low and end up holding the speakers close to my ears when doing a skype call.
Is this an issue I need to take up with warranty support or are the speaker volumes expected to be this low?

Hello. Some of the models do have adequate volume and some have low volume, but it is a subjective thing and I don't know if anyone can say that your volume is normal or not without hearing it. Even then they would need to compare it with others of the same model. If you post your model name then maybe someone with that model will express an opinion.
If the volume is low only in Skype but okay when playing an audio file from the hard drive, then probably a Skype setting. Right click on the volume icon on the taskbar and click on "Open volume mixer" to see individual volume sliders for each device.
Also you could test by switching from the vendor's audio driver (varies by model but probably Realtek) to the Windows native audio driver. If the volume seems too low (when playing audio files) with both drivers then there could be a hardware problem.
1. Open the Device Manager (type devmgmt.msc in the Windows search box).
2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".
3. Select to "Update Driver Software".
4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".
5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".
6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.
7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).
8. Click "Next".
9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver).
10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.
[To get back to the Realtek driver,  do it again but reverse the names in steps 1 and 6.]
Note that the above instructions are for models with a Realtek audio driver. If yours uses IDT or Conexant, look for those names in the Device Manager.

I've tried adjusting every setting availble in both windows and Beats control panels. This has always been a problem since I bought the compueter. I'm just tired of having to stick my ear next to the speakers to hear anything. Ear phone plug and ear phone volume control works fine. Both speakers are working, just with no power. • X-Fi Xtreme Audio - Volume goes low, static, then comes back.

Hi all, I have a problem that just developed with my sound after 3 years of owning this PC. Is this the infamous static problem with the card or something else I can fix? Thanks.
I was playing a game the other day when the sound 'cut out'. If I turn the volume on my speakers up louder I can sometimes hear what should be playing, it's very quiet and sometimes distorted. There is also a loud hiss and static when the volume is at standard levels whilst the sound is doing this. Sometimes I can't hear anything if I turn it right up even, it's just the static.
There have been the odd pop, crackle and even strange noise coming from it on occasion over the last few days.
After a while it just decides to go back to normal and will work for a while and then do the same thing again. Will happen when playing games or even just on the desktop (listening to music to test this)
I have unplugged my speakers (2 desk speakers with subwoofer) and put headphones in, they are doing exactly the same thing so it is not the speakers.
I have updated the drivers. No change.
I'm baffled. Sometimes even restarted the computer doesn't fix it, it just decides to work again.
It's almost like it's getting inteference or picking up a staticy radio, and then cuts out again, but obviously i know that's not what it's doing.
Any solutions or am I looking at buying a new sound card here?
I'm not using two gfx cards, and the mobo is ASUS p5n-e sli. I have an Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTS gfx card.
Any other info you need let me know, thanks in advance.
Oh and I believe it's in PCI. Not PCI-E.

@Re: X-Fi Xtreme Audio - Volume goes low, static, then comes backu Hi
Did anyone solve this - I have started getting exactly the same problem today. There is a fairly loud pop and then the sound that normally should be coming form the machine (game or music) is very quiet and distorted. After a short while (a few minutes), it pops again and starts working again. I built this machine a few months ago and this is the first time that I have had this issue. The specs are as follows:
    XFX ATI Radeon HD 5870
Asus P6X58D Premium Intel X58 Motherboard,
    Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping 2.66Ghz (Nehalem)
    Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-2800C9 (600MHz) Tri-Channel
    Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000 2TB HD
    Intel X25-M Mainstream 80GB SSHD
    X-Fi Fatalty FPS
The X-Fi card is from my old machine and it worked perfectly in that one.
    Many thanks,
    Dave

  • AC3 audio is VERY low compared to apples menu presets

AC3 audio is VERY low compared to apples menu presets,
The original aiff files are at a good level, concert footage professionally recorded, nothing peaking, nothing too low.
THe AC3 is at minus 10DB on the vu meter, the aiff peaks at 100.
The apple menu music, which are .mov files, peek at plus 1-2.
My old version of compressor did not do this.
I do not have enough room on my disk for all AIFF but I do want to use the Apple Menus and provided music.
    Any thoughts?

You can increase the Ac 3 "reference level" to 0 dB (it should be -27 dB)
Reference level? There is no such thing - I believe you are referring to Dialog Normalization, and it is extremely unwise to set this to zero... it is most certainly not a good way of increasing the overall volume of the file. -27 happens to be the application's default value, but it in no way means it should be set to -27. There are a few factors you need to consider when using AC3 encoding...
The DNV setting is the amount of attenuation that the file will get, according to a formula:
    attenuation = 31 + DNV setting
Therefore if you set the DNV to be 0 you will alter all AC3 streams by 31 Db, which is enough to make it unplayable without serious distortion:
    0 = 31 + (-31)
If you want to get the exact same audio levels out of A.Pack (or Compressor 2, if you are using that) then your DNV setting should be set to -31. This means there is absolutely NO attenuation to the file, meaning you get the same levels out as went in...
What I recommend here is to edit the audio in an application such as Peak and get it sounding exactly as you want it. When you encode to AC3 set the DNV to -31 and set the compression to 'none' (not film standard or anything else, there's nothing worse than badly applied compression). These settings then give you a basic output which is nearer to what you start off with. The other setting much talked about is RF Overmodulation protection. This is useful to turn on if you think the player will be sending the output signal to an RF input on a TV rather than through scart or something else. It certainly used to be the case that such signals were boosted by 11db, causing overmodulation. The setting is a way of preventing that hapening, but as more and more folk have stopped using RF as an input it makes sense to turn it off. If in doubt, turn it on, but listen to the output file and see if it is acceptible.
As for the basic bitrate, for a stereo file, lower it to no less than 192kbps.
Now, if you want to run a few tests, then keep all the settings above and encode the same 10 second piece of audio. Change the DNV to -31, then -20, then -8 and then 0 and play the resulting files back and listen to what happens each time.
Head over to http://www.macprovideo.com and download some of the tutorials there for A.Pack. They have been created by Martin Sitter (who has helped and guided me more than once) and will give you a far better understanding of AC3 encoding than anything else I can think of. You will pay for them, but it is a wise investment if you are at all unsure of how to get the best audio onto your discs. Let's face it, audio accounts for at least 2/3rds of the experience when watching TV - it is as well to get it right.

  • Incoming ring and text volume very low!

hi, have recently noticed that when i lower volume level for music, video, games, other media, it also reduces my ringtone and notification volume level too! (even though the slider bar level is on max for ringtones, notifications.) so if for e.g i lower video volume on youtube etc, it takes my incoming call and text volume down too! this never use to happen and only noticed when i saw led missed call, text, flashing.try your own z3c?
    settings-
    sound-
    volumes-
    music,video,etc (on low)-
    ringtone&notification(max)
    ok.
now check incoming call, text volume (very low on mine) so i have to reset music, video, games etc to max to hear incoming calls, texts but i dont want max volume for music, video,,,
b.t.w I'm still on kitkat 4.4.4 but as i said the volume levels could be individually adjusted since out of box.
now strange thing is my mate has the xperia sp and i checked his yesterday and he had same issue (jellybean) and because his volume level on video, games etc is low but max on ringtone, text he too misses calls and texts! (unless of course he sets max volume on the video, games). also using volume on side of phone has no effect either.
    any ideas?
    cheers.

  • QT 7 Pro - Volume of  audio is very low when I record from a microphone.

Possibly someone can help me here, I am trying to record audio using a microphone and QuickTime Pro. I want to put this audio on my Nano.
I cannot get the audio volume up to the level of existing imported audio programs when I record a audio program using QTP and a mic.
I have already tried to set the microphone volume to a higher level. In the Quicktime Program I set the Menu/Edit/Preferences/Quicktime Preferences
I then go to the Audio tab, select audio recording and playback devices, select "audio playback and recording devices" and set the volume slider on the microphone to high, go to the advanced tab, set the microphone to boost, still I get a very low volume.
When I record using the Windows Sound Recorder I get a high volume, but the output is a wave file and the quality is not as good as I really want. But clearly the microphone and driver work. I have tried updating the driver, still get low volume for my recorded audio.

  • Gb2 and m-audio firewire solo...rec. volume very low.

    Dear all,
i'm using an m-audio fwire solo device with shure sm-58 mic.
Still, I see that record levels are always very low in gb regardless of how close i can get the mic to the amp or else.
Im pretty shure it has something to do with gb..
    all settings are fine
    any help?

Garageband defaults to the built-in mic. Make sure that the built-in is not actually being used. Open Garageband preferences, click on the Audio tab and select your device.
In addition, I have noticed that devices work better if they are connected before turning on your computer.

  • Mini CQ10t-100 IDT audio volume really low even when maxed out

Just got my mini in today and the audio volume is very low.  Even at 100% you can barely hear it.  Ive downloaded the latest driver on hp's site and im still having the same problem.  Im running Windows XP SP3 with IDT driver version 5.10.6217.0.
Doing some google searches I found a couple of sites that recommended uninstalling the IDT driver and using Vistas High Definition Audio CODEC driver but I dont have that option with XP.  How can I get this working correctly?

Unfortunately, you are not the only one. This has been reported elsewhere, and there doesn't seem to be any fix that I have seen. Your only solution may be to revert to 10.4.6.
I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news,

  • SX80 Audio Volume Became low

I am using SX80 unit with projector connected with 50' HDMI cable, and the main audio also comes out from projector over HDMI. I am also getting another audio out to external amplfier+ speaker set to the back side of the room ( this is faily large room).
Suddenly I came across that the audio volume over the projector ( though HDMI) became very low. But the audio over "line out" was still OK. I was not able to figure out why this became low; I even tried TC console, and nothing I could do there to get normal audio out.
Everything became normal after a factory reset. Does anyone had similaro experience with SX80 ?
    Thanks, Nick.

At a guess, I'd say that the SX80 is echo cancelling as it's hearing itself back through the microphones too much.
We've seen this quite a few times on various models of endpoint - and the end users usually think "I can't hear, so I'll turn the volume up" which often makes the problem worse.  Turning the volume down on the display device, and the endpoint, usually resolves the issue.
PS Your question would be better placed in the TelePresence section of the forums where these devices are more actively discussed than in the Other Collaboration section you have posted in.  If the above has not answered your question, I'd suggest you move your discussion over there.

  • Why is volume very low on I pad?

Volume is very low on a ipad

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Check your settings. The iPads have a small switch on the right edge. It can be used as a rotation lock to keep the screen from automatically reorienting itself as you move around, but you need to have the tablet’s settings configured properly. That same switch, right above the volume buttons, can also be set to function instead as a mute button to silence certain types of audio.
If the switch is set to work as a mute button, you can change its purpose to “screen-rotation lock” by tapping the Settings icon on the home screen. On the Settings screen, tap General on the left side, and on the right side of the screen flick down to “Use Side Switch to.” Tap to select Lock Rotation or Mute to set the button’s function. Even if you set the side switch for your preferred use, you can still mute the Mini or lock the screen. Just double-click the Home button, and when the panel of apps appears along the bottom edge of the screen, flick the row from left to right with your finger. Tap the icon on the far left side of the row to either lock the iPad’s screen or mute the iPad’s alerts, notifications and sound effects. Music, podcasts and video are not muted unless you turn the volume all the way down.

  • Electric guitar volume very low

I have a Saffire Pro 14 audio interface connected via Firewire. Running my electric guitar through it into my Mac Pro and my MacBook. No matter what I do, the sound level is very low. I'm pretty sure I was able to solve this problem before because I'm looking at some recordings I did a while back and the waveform looks normal, the volume seems fine. However, when I record now I have to turn up the amp output levels to the maximum to get any kind of sound at all, in addition to turning up the volume knobs on the guitar itself. In addition, when I turn up the track volume on playback, the level indicator goes into the red even when the audio is moderately audible. The waveform looks flat. I think this is worse on my Mac Pro than on the MacBook.
Also, sometimes the signal just drops out completely for a few seconds. Dead space, as if I overloaded a circuit or something (which is possible, since I've turned up the output levels all the way on the virtual amp).

that sounds like your problem, guitars are not line-level instruments.

  • BMW - Bluetooth Volume - Very Low

I currently drive a BMW 328xi with Navigation paired with an iPhone 3GS. Is anyone else experiencing low speaker volume coming through the car speakers? I've maxed out my settings, but the volume is still very low. I'm assuming that the microphone is fine, because the other party can hear me well.
If anyone has run into similar issues and has a fix, please post.
    Thank you.

Out of curiosity, have you used the side volume button on your iPhone to maximize the volume when the phone is in use?
The iPhone unlike other phones, remembers the volume settings per audio source so that it doesn't quite affect hearing if you want it loud in one setting and then quiet with another (which could be more powerful).
Additionally I have a 2010 Ford Fusion with Navi system (not quite a sweet as your wheels) but have read on the SYNC forums (which allow me to integrate the bluetooth phone in with the stereo like your BMW) that some of the NAVI systems tend to be quieter...
Each time when I go to use the phone for the first time in the car I still need to crank the phone volume as the car keeps putting it only to 1/4th of the stereo volume... That's the other pain that I keep encountering...
As for the other party, they can hear you fine because of the positioning of the microphone in your car... It's between the phone's volume (remembering) setting and that of your car stereo...
Hope this helps... Let us know if this helps at all!

  • IPad Air microphone volume very low

I've been using iPad 2 to iPad 2 FaceTime for long time. The voice are absolutely cristal clear. But the other party recently bought a new iPad Air, which has caused very low and troppy voice when I hear from my iPad 2. The other party has indicated to me that they can hear me clearly and even louder than iPad 2. The situation is not unique because they have tried on a different new iPad Air with me which yielded the same result. The Skype test shows no significant difference between 2x iPad 2 and iPad 2 to iPad Air. I'd also imagine there will be no much volume difference when FaceTime between 2 iPad Air.
So the bottom line is that Apple will need to fix the FaceTime bewteen iPad 2 and iPad Air for inbalanced volume setting.

Not normal. Take it to an Apple Store for evaluation.

Product Name: HP Pavilion g6 - 2210sa Notebook PC
    Product number: C6S45EA#ABU

This is a brand new laptop and from the start the audio volume has been fluctuating like it has a compressor/limiter applied to it. Any volume increase in a piece of music I play off itunes/pro tools/zune etc. is dragged back down after a moment and vice versa with quiter sounds.
I've searched these forums for a solution and tried all the suggested methods I've come across but am yet to find a fix for this.
It seems this is a very common problem for people with HP computers and yet so many of these promblems seem to go unsolved!

    Hey jhazzac,
The first thing I would suggest checking is your BIOS and Audio driver version. You will want to have the latest versions for both. Here is a link to the HP driver page for you model. If drivers are out of date, it can cause strange isues.
Check what BIOS version is on your notebook currently by pressing FN+ESC. A little window will pop up that has your BIOS version. Compare that BIOS version (ex. F.14, F.16) with the latest one available HP's driver page which shows to be F.22 right now. Take a screenshot of your FN+ESC window and post it in a reply if you're unsure.
Also compare your audio driver version with the latest version on HP's driver page. To check your current audio driver version:
    1. Press Windows Key + C to bring up the Charms Bar.
    2. Click Search and type in "Device" and Click Settings.
    3. Click on Device Manager in the search results.
    4. Expand the 'Sound, video and game controllers' section.
    5. Double-click on IDT Audio.
    6. Click the driver tab. Make note of the driver version number and post it in your reply.
If the audio driver version on your notebook right now is earlier than the version available on the HP driver page, you will want to download and install the latest version.
If the issue persists after you have updated the BIOS and audio driver versions, please let me know!
Also let me know if you have any questions or if these suggestions helped (this could help other users having similar issues). I'll keep an eye out for your reply!
