  • When I plug an HDMI cable into my Macbook Pro, it just turns itself off. Help?

So I am trying to hook up my non-retina Macbook Pro to my HDTV to use it as a higher quality monitor, but one of two things always happens. When I try pluggingg in the HDMI, then turning on my Mac, it fails to detect the display. If I plug in the HDMI when the Mac is already on, my laptop will just turn itself off immediately. If anyone could tell me what I'm doing wrong, or if i need to get something else, it would be greatly apreciated.

I am wondering if you may have some debris in the output port where the plug is not allowed to be fully inserted.  If not, take to an Apple store genius bar for a free evaluation.
    Ciao.

    Hi,
Open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Display Devices - make a note of the hardware listed here i.e. ATI, NVidia or Intel.
Next, connect your notebook via HDMI to your Tv.  Right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices.  Left click once ( just to highlight the entry ) the HDMI Output that has the same name as your display adapter and then click the Set Default button - see if you now have audio.

  • Zen Micro Freezes when I plug in USB cable+USB not recognized at ti

Ok, I know you, the reader, has heard this complaint posted over and over on the Creative forums, and you would probably tell me to SEARCH THE FORUMS. Well, I did, and I found no answer or solution to my problems. So..here goes nothing.
I recently purchased a Black 5gb Creative Zen Micro, I was really content and happy with it...that is until I plugged it into my USB 2.0 Card. The moment I do that (I've tried plugging it in into every USB 2.0 slot, and NO, this isn't a hub, but a PCI card), The Zen Micro freezes! I have to resolve this by removing the cover and taking out the battery, then reinserting the battery. At the same time my Zen Micro freezes, a little bubble pops up on my computer screen saying "USB Device Not Recognized". I'm going absolutely out of my mind here, and am on the verge of returning the Zen Micro, and might get a replacement, and if that doesn't work, just returning the Zen altogether for a refund and getting a Rio Carbon. I really like the Zen, so PLEASE PLEASE help me out here!
Things I've Tried That Did Not Work:
-Uninstall/Reinstalling Zen Explorer, Mediasource (basically everything on CD)
-Updating the drivers for Zen Micro found on Nomadness.net
    -Updating Firmware for Zen Micro
-Going into rescue mode and cleaning up, Formatting, reloading firmware, and rebooting.
-Trying the USB 2.0 Card in different PCI Slots
-Rotating the order in which I connect the USB cable to Zen Micro and PC
-Uninstalling/Reinstalling the drivers, even when the Zen Micro pops up as "Unknown Device"
    -Reading tips/hints on Nomadness.net
I have scoured the forums, and have not found anything useful or new. I know its not the USB 2.0 Card's problem, since I plugged in my USB mouse into all the ports on the USB Card, and it worked fine.
Note: When I plug the USB cable that came with the Zen Micro into the integrated USB slots on the motherboard (USB .), it at times, does work, but even then, not a high chance of it happening. Even if I do successfully connect the Zen to a USB . slot without it freezing up, the Zen ends up not being detected by any program, like Window Media Player, Mediasource, or Creative Zen Micro Explorer.
I am going out this weekend and am gonna try to buy a new USB Cable, and if that doesn't work, returning the cable, and returning the Zen Micro to be replaced. AND IF THAT DOES NOT WORK...GOODBYE CREATIVE! HELLO RIO! But please, any help you guys could give would be greatly appreciated. I will also try to contact Creative Customer Support, but I doubt they'll tell me anything new, if I could even connect to them without being put on hold.
    System Specs:
    Windows XP Professional SP2
    Creative Zen Micro Firmware .02.05
    USB 2.0

Yep, that's exactly my issues to.....no matter what I've done, including replacing the USB 2.0 card which WAS and Adaptec DuoConnect 2.0 card which works fine with every other USB device ever connected to it, the Zen Micro 6g is NOT recognized by Creative Media Source or WMP. It is only recognized by the PC in Device Manager, and it has a yellow marker on it, which tells me the drivers are not installed. I know I don't need the drivers installed, but even after installing them, it tells me the drivers are not installed.
However, the answer is: it's definitely not the Micro, since it works flawlessly on my other PC and on my Toshiba notebook. So, it's some compatibility issue on that one PC. Since I refuse to let things be, I am reformatting that PC, reinstalling from scratch with WinXP and sp2. This PC has WinXP Pro but it has other issues so a reformat is in order anyway. Hopefully, this will resolve the issues. If not, then I say it's incompatibility with the Intel 865Perl m.b. But I'm at a loss as to why it won't work when plugged into the Adaptec card too.

I have reached the same conclusion in the mean time. I have done a bit of investgation in to other grahics cards and am seeing some that show SPDIF connections from the card to the mother board. I was not familar with SPDIF but it did a little bit of sluething. It is of course a digitally enconded voice. I am guessing that in that case the mother board ( assuming it supports this hardware option) would use this output and be able to translate that digital audio to its other audio outputs. That is a lot of guessing of course. I think my "solution" might  be a whole new desktop - a rather drastic course of action! I was in the proceess of getting ready to upgrade this machine anyway with a new graphics card (which I will now return), go to Win 7, and maybe even a new digital TV reciever,  and I don't want to throw good money after bad anyway.
    Thanks for your comments

  • [SOLVED] Alsa: How to disable auto-mute when plugging in headphones?

I have a set of headphones plugged into my workstation permanently (the headphone jack is hard to reach so I don't want to plug those headphones in and out) as well as some speakers. Jack sensing works perfectly - when I unplug the headphones, the speakers are unmuted and when I plug the headphones back in the speakers are muted. Now as I said, my headphones are plugged in permanently and occasionally I want to have sound on the speakers at the same time. So far I have not found a way to have both headphones and speakers unmuted simultaneously.
I originally thought this was a problem with Pulseaudio (I am using Cinnamon as my desktop) but when I directly go to the Alsa hw device I get exactly the same behavior. The sound chip is a built-in VIA VT1818S and aplay displays the correct cards and devices:
    $ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: VT1818S Analog [VT1818S Analog]

I verified with "mpg123 -a hw:0,0" that I get no sound on the speakers when the headphones are plugged in and vice versa. I tried a lot of different settings with alsamixer and amixer to no avail. These are my current settings:

If I read the Alsa kernel docs right, the VIA driver simply does not provide any option to disable auto-muting: http://git.alsa-project.org/?p=alsa-ker … xt;hb=HEAD.
I would be glad if I had misread/misunderstood something or there were any other means of achieving what I am after? All I found so far is lots of posts where auto-muting did not work but very few people seem to want the opposite. FWIW, my old installation of Ubuntu 11.10 was working fine in that regard, i.e. it probably did not support auto-muting for my hardware.

Solved, well, good enough for me anyway. In alsamixer, I enabled "Independent HP". Independent HP means that two of the six surround channels get diverted to the headphones. Alsa creates a second device, one for line out and the other one for the headphones. It is a very neat feature that is meant to allow you to e.g. do a voice call with your headphones while you play music through the speakers at the same time. I can now choose in PulseAudio whether I want output to my headphones or the speakers. It required that in /etc/pulse/default.pa, I added the line "load-module module-alsa-sink device=hw:0,2" after this paragraph:
    ### Automatically load driver modules depending on the hardware available
    .ifexists module-udev-detect.so
    load-module module-udev-detect
    .else
    ### Use the static hardware detection module (for systems that lack udev support)
    load-module module-detect
    .endif
    # Take Independent HP into use.
    load-module module-alsa-sink device=hw:0,2
All this really is a work-around for two bugs:
Call it a bug or a missing feature, but it does not look like the Alsa snd_hda_codec_via driver allows to disable auto-muting.
Before the change to default.pa, PulseAudio already allows me to switch between two output devices - "analog output" and "analog headphones". "Analog headphones" however does the same thing as "analog output" and plays sound on the external speakers and not the headphones. I suspect that the PulseAudio module-udev-detect detects both Alsa devices but wires them wrongly.
The above still doesn't give me what I originally asked, i.e. sound on both speakers and headphones at the same time, but I realized that I don't really need that. I just need a way to switch on speakers occasionally while my headphones are plugged in.

  • Internal Mic is mute when headphone plugged in

    Hi,
My laptop is Toshiba R30 with Windows 7 SP1.
The internal mic of the laptop will be mute automatically when ever I plug in my headphone, which doesn't have a mic in it. Is there any way that I can use the internal mic of the laptop while using my headphone?
    Thanks!

    Hello ricky_waldron,
Your speakers do not mute when headphones are connected.
Go to HP.com and update the BIOS and chipset driver.
Here is a link to the updates.
Since you have already done a recovery, it may be the hardware not working correctly.
You may need to call HP and have the laptop sent back for repair.
Here is a link to a phone number to call HP and see what options they have.
Let me know how everything goes.
    Have a good day.

  • Speaker wouldn't mute when headphone plugged in

I've search the forum for this problem and found several solutions but none if them work.
    This is my problem...
One day the building I've stayed been struck by lighting and my laptop suddenly shutdown. When I turned it back on the problem occurs. My laptop speaker wouldn't mute when the headphone plugged in. I've try reinstall the driver and plugged in a new headphone still wouldn't mute and the sound from headphone only from one side. Is this hardware problem and can it be fix or this problem can be solve just by tweaking?

  • How can I prevent iPhoto from auto-launching when I plug in a card reader?

When I plug in a card reader, iPhoto assumes that it is being summoned and auto-magically launches itself. I don't want this to happen. I don't want iPhoto to ever launch without my permission, which I might grant once a year or so. Yet, every day I have to cope with it launching multiple times as I attempt to transfer photos to my hard drive. It is a minor annoyance, true, but it is an annoyance.
My question, then, is how can I make iPhoto stop doing this? I've searched its settings high-and-low, but to no avail. I've searched the System Preferences high-and-low, but to no avail. There must be something I'm missing.

    Hi John,
the next info is on using Image Capture to download the images. In the preferences though, you can choose to have nothing open when the camera is connected.
Using Image Capture to download images and video clips:
Open up Image Capture which is found in the Applications folder.
When it is opened, go to Image Capture/Preferences
    Under the General button choose
Camera: When a camera is connected, open Image Capture.
The next time you connect your camera Image Capture will open.
In the window that opens you will see an Options button. Click on that button to set your options.
To find out more about Image Capture (it can do a lot more) Click on Help in the menu bar when Image Capture is open.
iPhoto: How to Change the "Open Automatically" Preference
If you find you can't change any of Image Captures preferences or can't access any drop down menus or they are greyed out, check to make sure Image Capture is loose in the Applications folder and not within a sub folder.

  • IPhone 5 and Bang & Olufsen earset 3i headset: mutes when I plug it in

    Hi all
I've done a sweep of the discussion boards can find no similar issue:
As the title says, when I plug in my B&O earset 3i into a 64Gb iPhone 5, the volume goes to silent/mute.
Has anyone else had the same experience and is there a way for me to stop this from happening?
    Thanks in advance
    Graeme

For those of you who bump into  this question in the future:
The workaround I ended up using is that before I play a track after the headphones are plugged in, I increase the volume. Mildly annoying but not a deal breaker.
Oh, and the mute occurs when I use the headphone remote not when I plug in teh headset, as my question implied.

  • Laptop starts only when charger plugged in

I have a 15" powerbook G4 and suddenly it turns itself off automatically if i unplug the charger, its very weird. I have a battery and its charged, etc. etc., but it only wants to turn on when the charger is plugged.
Anyone have any clue whats wrong? Is there some random setting where it can be on only when its plugged in???
    Thanks for any help

Have you used the PowerBook G4 Battery Updater 1.1? I couldn't get my brand new 1.67GHz 15" PB to work until I ran the updater.
