Laptop battery and generic MagSafe adapter
My MagSafe adapter went dead. If I use a generic MagSafe adapter the ones that you buy on ebay. Would this damage my laptop battery?
I would avoid those - I tried it once in my old 15 inch Macbook - and for some reason - it only works when it wants to and my battery needed to be replaced after a couple of months (coincidence maybe?).
So spend the extra $20 for the Apple Branded Magsafe.
Then again, that's just my suggestion.

This is a recent problem, only since I updated the last security update from apple has this been happening. No matter where I plug the laptop in (as in, no matter the power source), the magsafe adapter glows green like it's going to charge, that lasts roughly a second and my mac behaves as if it's going to charge (different status bar indicator and brightness jumps).. aaand then the green light shuts off completely, mac brightness & status indicators go back to normal. Then the light comes back on, then shuts off, rinse, repeat. When I put the mac to sleep or shut it down completely, then plug the magsafe in, it works and charges just fine. But then the second I wake the mac up, the orange charge light shuts off and it goes into the green light loop again. Weird issue, just putting it out there to see if anyone's had that happen before and can offer tips. I've tried resetting the SMC and removing the battery when it's shut down, btw. Halp!

Laptop is not powering on wihout battery and with battery
Hi All,
I have Presario CQ 40-327 TU Laptop and i've been using this since 2009. My lap's batterry is almost dead and not charging up.When i try to poer on my lap it was not powering up. So i removed the battery and plugged in the power cable and tried again but it didn't. What is the reason behind this? Though the battry is removed, it should power on with the charger cable but the same is not happening in my case?Help me outThanks for the reply and suggestion.
Finally i have told to replace the battery and adaptor. I've asked them to send me quotation. The quotation as follows.

Symptoms:
Will not power on with the power adapter
Will not charge battery while laptop running
What I have done so far:
Replaced Battery with correct new battery ……….. No change in symptoms.
Replaced power adapter with new…………. No change in symptoms
Reseated the Ram, altered position of both 1 gb and 2 gb memory module. …. No change in symptoms
Dismantled laptop, down to motherboard to check for loose ribbon cables.
Reseated lan and wireless lan cards.
Reseated processor
Reseated Hdd
Replaced RTC battery
Reassembled and no change in symptoms.
Checked setup in bios OK
Reflashed Bios with F.15 update (this during one occasion where the laptop remained on with battery and power adapter for nine minutes)
All with no change to symptoms. And the symptoms still exist.
All that I am left with is that it is due to a faulty motherboard after two years.
Have I missed something, is there more I could be looking at

I've had my Macbook for about 9 months and I am having issues with the magsafe and battery. If I try to run the computer without the battery installed it shuts down the first time it tries to access the HDD or requires even light use of the processor. In turn, whenever the compuer is plugged in, the battery charge hovers at about 95% and is constantly charging. As a result of this, the battery stops working at about 50% charge (The computer just dies mid-task and never goes to sleep) even though my cycle count is only 174. If I were to bring the computer in, could they replace the battery and magsafe since I am still under warranty?

First off, try resetting the SMC:

If that fails to correct the problems, then you will need to contact AppleCare (or make a genius bar appointment and bring it into an Apple Store). It may be as "simple" as battery+charger, and they may start there, but it may also be an internal hardware issue. It's definitely a hardware issue, though, so you're covered under warranty. -

The last couple of days when I wanted to charge my Macbook Pro 13", my magsafe adapter stopped working when my MBP found the remaining charging time.
When I charge my MBP with another adapter, it works fine.
What can I do? Do I have to go back to the store? It is only four months old.sounds like a funky charger, go to the store and try anoher if it messes up have it replaced. They've been having issuses wuth the new charger

I'm having a devil of a time with my Powerbook. It won't recognize a power adapter.
It won't charge my battery.
Won't run when plugged into the power adapter.
The only way it works is for me to charge my battery in my girlfriend's Powerbook and then sprint through any work I try to get done.
I've replaced the PRAM with twice. (one i bought and the other I took from my girlfriend's which I 100% know to work) It didn't make a difference.

There's only 4 components in the charging circuit: power adapter, DC-in card, battery, and logic board. Do you know for a fact that your power adapter is working? If yes, then not running on the power adapter says either the DC-in card is bad (the card that has the jacks on the left side of the computer) or it's a logic board issue. Is the female jack where you plug the power adapter in visibly damaged, loose, or the case around the socket damaged? If the socket is wiggly loose, likely a new DC-in card is in order. Does the power adapter light up at all when you plug it in?
We had a similar, but not exact, situation recently on one of our Powerbooks, and ended up taking it to the Apple store, where they sent it to the Apple depot for repair. They replaced the logic board and put a new battery in. The Depot service returns the machine with anything needing repair, repaired. If everything is in good physical order, ie the case isn't damaged, it costs around $325, which is less than getting a new logic board put in at the store. If the case is damaged, a trip to the Apple depot costs more. A new DC-in card card + installation by Apple runs around $130, give or take. Used DC-in cards run around $75-$95 if you want to install it yourself. -
Small electric shocks, laptop refused to start until I remove the battery and put it back in.
I own a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Series i7537T-5005sLV.
A short while ago I tried to power on my laptop but it didn't come on. I thought that the battery drained and I didn't notice however when I plugged in the power cord no lights came on. I decided to open up the laptop and remove the battery and put back the battery and try to power on the laptop. It came on after doing that and I saw lights again.
I also notice that after reseating the battery, the latency between pressing the power button and the laptop actually coming on is shorter. It is almost instantaneous.Before there was about a 1.5 seconds delay. (THIS COULD BE MY IMAGINATION THOUGH)
I also noticed that I got little "pinches" or small shocks when my skin comes in contact with the edge of the laptop, especially at the end of the palm rest area. The shocking sensation could be cause the hair on my hands as my skin brush along the edges of the laptop as I type. I say this because I've never experienced a shock touching anywhere else on the laptop and I never felt a shock while using the tips of my fingers to touch the edges.
One last thing I feel I should mention. Around the SD card slot area there is a small dent protruding outwards; barely noticeable. It was a brand new laptop and the seal on the box wasn't broken or tampered with so I am assuming that this was a manufacture's defect. One I was willing to overlook since the dent wasn't that bad and added some character to the laptop. However I am beginning to worry that the unit might be damaged and that is why I had the power issue.
The laptop is about two weeks old. I had to replace the first one because the display had horizontal waves running from top to bottom. Even in the BIOS. They were especially visible against gray backgrounds.
I don't want to have to return another one and I like the laptop but if it is unsafe to use then I'd rather send it back and keep my life.Hi Groudie,

Powerbook alternates between battery and adapter when plugged in
The other day my PB started alternating between battery and adapter when plugged in: the symbol changes from batt to charging every few seconds, brightness goes up and down. I've managed to find a position where it will actually charge. I even tried a new adapter, but it's still extremely temperamental.
I'm afraid there's something wrong with the internal power jack, but is there anything else it could be? Any way to tweak the jack?
Thanks!No, there's no way to "adjust" the port. It's soldered to a small Sound/DC-In card inside the Powerbook. What's apparently happened to yours is that the cord has been jerked rougly up, down or sideways one time too many, and one or more of the solder joints has broken. Because it's now able to move, however slightly, the rest of the joints are also being stressed every time you connect or disconnect the cord. Sooner or later another will break, then another. You'll end up having to replace the card when you can no longer shim or jimmy the port so it makes proper contact.
If you're very good at very small-scale soldering, you could take the card out and try to repair it, but if you're an average ham-handed Joe like me, replacing the board is a better bet. Getting to it, while not actually difficult, is a pretty considerable adventure in an Albook, because nearly everything else has to be removed from the case first to reach it. -

Then I guess the power adaptor is faulty. In as much as you've verified this with a known good one a new one is in order. Try yours in another powerbook to make sure.

I am new to MAC and started with a MAC Book Pro and an iMac. These were purchased a week ago. Today while using the MBP, I noticed that the indicator light on the adapter plug was amber or red. The bottom of my MBP is very hot and the light is only green when I first turn on the computer. Do I have a problem? I also tried the the battery download and was told that it is not needed.
I've never seen red, amber means it's charging the battery. You can also go to Applications>Utilities>System Profiler>Power and check to see how much battery life is left, maximum capacity, etc.
Since your notebooks are new I would do a complete drain of the battery, then a complete charge w/o interruption. This will calibrate your battery and maximize its lifetime.
