Laptop can't access Internet through Westell 7500 router

My son came home from college with a laptop that is running Tiger 10.4.10. If he takes his laptop to the local library and uses the wireless network there, he can access the Internet. But, his laptop does not appear to work with our Westell 7500 router. He is getting an error message that says "There was an error in joining the airport network..."
The router works fine with our 10.5.2 (Leopard) iMac and it also works with PC laptops.
I checked System Preferences-Network- Show - Airport, under the TCP/IP settings. The IP address is set to 192.168.1.1, which is the address of our gateway. The router and DNS server fields are blank. The iPv4 field is set to configure manually.
I have tried putting the IP address into both the router and DNS server fields but this does not work.
I have searched the Discussions but there does not appear to be anyone with this problem who has this type of router. Does anyone know what the settings should be for the laptop and router to communicate?

It won't work if you try to give it the same ip as the router.

The easiest way is to get the settings from the iMac and put the same settings into the laptop. At least, that is a good start. How is your router configured? It is quite unusual to use "configure manually". Are you sure this is correct? If you're not sure, try "Using DHCP" instead. Leave everything else blank. See if that works.
It isn't really a question of which particular router but more of how the router is configured. That's why looking at the iMac which does work with your set up may be a good place to start.
Try those two strategies. If that doesn't work, let me know what settings the iMac is using.

Everything works perfect with Macs, iPhone, iPads but I have 2 pcs that now can't access internet. The PCs connect to the airport and my other access points but no internet- The PCs sent an error of DNS

Yes, as we already said, it will do all of this if you have a good wireless signal reaching the bedroom.
Remember that an extender or repeater or whatever you want to call it can only extend the quality of signal that it receives.
The Ethernet signal that the Express delivers will only be as good as the quality of the wireless connection between the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express.

  • E1200 - can't access internet through Tooway satelite modem

I have a working satellite system (Tooway, KA-SAT) set up. Linking a laptop direct to the satellite modem lets me access the modem itself (address of 192.168.100.1) and through that the internet and web. That all seems to be working correctly.
However, I simplly cannot get the E1200 to provide internet access.
In turn, I can connect the laptop to the E1200 (address of 192.168.1.1) whether by using a Cat5 cable or wireless and I can successfully change the various settings, save them and reboot the router.
On the router information page the settings are shown as:
    Firmware 2.0.04 build 1 July 30, 2012
(IPv4) Connection type Automatic Configuration - DHCP
Internet IP address, subnet mask and Default Gate - all 0.0.0.0
    DHCP Lease Time is blank
However, on the Setup page the settings shown are:
IP address - 192.168.1.1 with usual subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and the start IP address ... 50 and range ... 50 to 99
    DGCP server - enabled
Lease time - 0 (one day)
I've been through the process of resetting the router to default and then reentering or resetting this relevant data several times but to no avail.
When I connect the Cat 5 cable from the modem to the Internet access port of the router the light flashes, presumably indicating traffic between the modem and router. I'm running Windows 7 on the laptop. Wireless connectivity between the laptop and the router is 'excellent' but the router is shown as not having internet access. Same applies if I connect the laptop and the router using Cat 5 cabling.
It must be some minor error I'm overlooking despite having pored over everything for hours - or perhaps a faulty router. Laptop access using ADSL and another router entirely is perfectly straightforward whether wireless or by cable.
Lastly, I can see that the laptop IP address changes between 10.100.nnn.nnn (connected direct to the modem) and 192.168.1.nnn (connected direct to the router with the router also connected to the modem) so that appears to be working as it should.
Any help/advice would be much appreciated. TIA.

Thanks for the suggestions. In fact I took over the equipment from a colleague and as he'd had the router set to -254 I was hopeful your suggestion might fix things. Unfortunately, nothing has changed although following the update I both turned the router off for a while and checked that verything else was unchanged.
Basically the router continues to show No internet access when identified by Win7.
As for allowing routers, no, that's fine. As I say a colleague used it (for around ten months) and it came originally from the top-level ISP (then my colleague's ISP, though not mine).
It's a dynamic IP address on a standard lease, DHCP managed, and I can't set a static one (at least not on the ordinary package I'm on, though possible on some hgh-level ones).
As for the cable I made that up myself yesterday and I'm pretty sure it's OK. It's about 18m in length but as I mentioned there's no problem in my connecting the laptop direct to the moment, using that specific cable (as well as another older one of similar length I tested earlier) and that it connects the laptop to the modem and thence to the internet suggests to me that it's fine. In fact I'd earlier tried the same set up with a couple of different short cables and that didn't work either.  I did wonder whether it should have been crossover but I was assured that wasn't the case.

we have a movie downloaded on a laptop connected to the internet pluged into our router in the basement and an apple tv upstairs trying to play the movie through home sharing but it wont play. can anyone tell me whats wrong? it comes to the last loading page where it shows the desscription of the movie befor it acually plays.

It can come about without any change done by the user, and it's not just from other networks. The placement of the router can also affect performance. Also make sure router is up to date.
Apart from that would be the reboots.

  • Problems with accessing Internet through router (permanent IP)

    Hi.
I changed hostname with sys-unconfig. Now computer has permanent IP address (non DHCP) and right hostname.
Before this change I had access to Internet (hostname: "unknown" and DHCP).
My computers access Internet through router.
There is ping from my computer to router and another computer. Also other computer pings my computer.
In DHCP tables my computer does not exist.
I created file /etc/defaultrouter with IP of my router.
Trying to access Internet, web browser (Mozilla) writes: "<site.com> could not be found. Please check name and try afain."
I think there is a problem with DNS.
How to configure my computer on Solaris 10 to access the Internet with current configuration?
    Thank you.

To test DNS services without a browser (ie, to see if the
system can be a DNS client), first use the command
    'nslookup'
    # /usr/sbin/nslookup sun.com
    Server: miki-class-gla.eclecticgroup.co.uk
    Address: 10.23.0.1
    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: sun.com
    Address: 72.5.124.61
    # /usr/sbin/nslookup google.com
    Server: miki-class-gla.eclecticgroup.co.uk
    Address: 10.23.0.1
    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: google.com
    Addresses: 64.233.167.99, 64.233.187.99, 72.14.207.99
If this doesn't work, then your system isn't talking to a
DNS server at all at all, so you need to check the contents
    of /etc/resolv.conf.
If it does work, use the command 'getent' to check that your
system as a whole is querying DNS for name-IP resolution.
    EG.
    # getent hosts sun.com
    72.5.124.61 sun.com
    # getent hosts google.com
    64.233.187.99 google.com
    72.14.207.99 google.com
    64.233.167.99 google.com
If you don't get back IP addresses, your system isn't
correctly configured as a DNS client.
Look at /etc/nsswitch.conf, and find the line
    that starts 'hosts'.
    If it says
    hosts files
then the system is not a DNS client.
To correct this, edit that line to add the word dns on the end:
    hosts files dns
That's it. No need to reboot.

  • Routing and Remote access - internal network not accessing internet through public network!

    Hello,
    Good Evening to all.
I got an issue in routing and remote access on windows 2003 server.  This server is already configured as File server, domain server and Application server. Also configured as router (through routing & remote access) for connecting three different
network to each other. So This server has three NIC card installed and each NIC card represent separate network.
    three different network are - 192.42.160.0/24 , 192.42.161.0/24, 192.42.162.0/24
Three NIC card installed on server as with following IP address -
    NIC -1 = 192.42.160.220 , Sub- 255.255.255.0 , Gateway - NO
    NIC -2 = 192.42.161.220 , Sub- 255.255.255.0 , Gateway - 192.161.220.112 (This ip for internet access so 4g router IP)
    NIC -3 = 192.42.162.220,  , Sub- 255.255.255.0 , Gateway - NO
Now the issue is I can reach to internet & (also pinging to router ip 192.42.161.112) from only one network that is - 192.42.161.0/24 , BUT when I trying to access internet from another two network (192.42.160.0/24 & 192.42.162.0/24) I cant access
it and moreover can't ping to internet router ip - 192.42.161.112...
So how I can access to internet from other two network also?
I was already configured static routing for all three network but still I was not success. really I don't know what exactly static routing it should be done in routing & remote access so that all three network can reach to internet?
Sorry if I am not able to explain properly. Please let me know if you need more explain on this...
    Thanks to all.

    Dear Milos,
I am happy to hear from you....
1.- Actually the setup was done long before by another guy and right now I don't want to change it.
Nice to hear from you! Thank you so much. Actually this is first time I am using technet forum upon the suggestion from one of the my friend. So any your help from you will help me a great in this issue...
I ran the route print command and given follow are the results.
I have only added the default route as per the below routes. Please guide me know how to add other static routes for three network.

can only access emails through OWA after migration from exchange 2007 to 2013, in other words unable to access mails through outlook or from other Applications services.
    needed RCA ... plz help..

    Hi,
From your description, you can send and receive messages only when you use OWA after migration from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013. If I have misunderstood your concern, please let me know.
In your case, I recommend you create a new test mailbox in your Exchange 2013 and check if you can send and receive messages on Outlook. If yes, it is recommended to create a new profile to solve this issue.
Hope this can be helpful to you.

  • New Ipod Touch 5g can't access Internet in home network (using Linksys E4200 router). But, OK with other Wifi.

Just bought new Ipod Touch 5g. I found out it can't access Internet in home network. not really cannot access, but very slow to open any web page, App Store failed to access, etc. But, OK with other Wifi (office & starbucks). Others existing iOS devices (Iphone4 & Ipad2) have no problem like this. I'm using Linksys E4200 router at home. anyone has any idea why?

    Try:
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>GeneralReset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections

    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.

I entered the server IP and port number in the HTTP PROXY fields but I still can not access the web. Any ideas?

You IT person should be able to sort this out.  But, they seems to be too busy or disinterested to do this.  Suggest you provide the it person with an iPhone to get interested.
Any could be lots of things.
The best you can do is to get access to the admin setup for networking on a pc?  The internet settings are all the same.  Only what names the manufactures change from OS to OS. Check and compare parameters.
Phone works to internet at home, I assume?

What a crappy design. This is where Android is so much better. It seems to me like you have no control over your iPhone. It does whatever Apple has designed it to do without asking you first. On Android you can actually go in see all folders, document files, photo files etc and you have so much more control of everything. Apple s..cks!

No, the bluetooth profile in the iPad does not provide that
capacity. Can your netbook be a wifi transmitter? If yes,
you can connect to the internet via htc-phone and pass
the connection to the netbook which will connect via wifi

SMS. Deggie, had them check that.  After a lengthy discussion with Senior Tech advisor, it appears it is iMessage/Face Time server (they are the same) issue, which will strong arm those into purchasing Data if they use iMessage over multiple devices, as the server registers the phone number associated with apple ID.  Not impressed. I put what I've learned here in a simliar thread
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/17416082#17416082
and this is what I've put in apple.com/feedback
"iMessage requires internet.  SMS does not.  iMessage/FaceTime auto logs phone numbers to the iMessage/Facetime  server (it's the same server as I've come to learn), this means that when iMessage/Face Time is turned on anyone sending a message through the server to me will only be sent as an iMessage- not when I'm not connected to internet, meaning I will not receive the message as an SMS by default, when I have another device using iMessage (such as MacBook) logged in.
This feature is a problem for me, bottom line, in that iMessage strong arms the consumer (me) into having to buy a data plan that they either do not want, or do not need."
