Laptop connects to wireless network via a WRT54G but it can't access internet

I’ve got a WRT54G cabled to my desktop, I set up a WEP-secured wireless network for my laptop, and the laptop connects to the wireless network and receives a strong signal, but it can’t get Internet access. I know the problem is not with the router because the laptop CAN get internet access when it's cabled to the router.  (So the problem isn’t an IP address problem—which I knew because I had to reconfigure the static IP of the laptop to get it to connect to the network in the first place.)  I turned off the Windows firewall, Symantec virus protection, and Internet Explorer’s pop-up blocker on the laptop. The laptop connects perfectly to the wireless network and receives a strong signal, so why can’t it access the internet??
Linksys tech support couldn’t figure it out, so I really need your help.  Thank you!

Just wanted to clarify what you meant in this post. If you entered the router's IP address as the static IP for the laptop, you would get the symptoms that you are describing. Try entering a IP that isn't normally used like 192.168.1.142. (That is assuming that your router IP is the default 192.168.1.1.)
If that isn't the issue, please tell me what ipconfig is returning on both the laptop and the desktop.

Worked fine last week, but over weekend just started having issues.

It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference that has appeared recently that is preventing your Time Capsule (TC) from providing a clean RF signal.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like iStumbler, or AirRadar to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible. Look for other Wi-Fis that may be operating nearby. Note those with the strongest signals and which channels they are operating on ... then change the channel used by the TC to be at least 3-5 channels away.

I'm trying to add my HP wireless printer as a "new client" to my wireless network using Airport Utility, but I can't find that option in the new version.  I've downloaded all available updates of the OS and the utility..  Help!

Why would you need to ADD a new Client. Unless the APE sytem is completely different then any other Wireless router the printer should get an IP address from the router. That is IF the printer is setup to get an IP from the LAN DHCP server.
Now you may want to make that IP it does get a Staticly assign IP address so it never changes, which will screw up printing if it does change. But i don't know if you can do that with APE routers.

Please tell me what should be done to retrieve my photos on ipad before reformatting it.

  • Wireless network via TC OK, but no internet connex - it's a router, right?

I'm close to going postal here & need to know if anyone else is having this problem. I'm able to set up a wireless network between my wireless devices (TC, iMac, Airport Express for iTunes to stereo), but cannot get an internet connection. With TC glowing green & my iMac showing connection to the network I just set up, I open Safari (tried other browsers to same effect), it doesn't connect, I use network diagnostics & I get green lights all the way down through ISP, but it goes red after that. When I undo everything & go back to my D-Link router, I'm fine & TC works as a wireless HD. I just can't seem to get it set up as a wireless router.

After a very long wait to speak to Apple's customer support team on the phone, I recieved excellent assistance in solving my problem. The issue was a backup power source in my VoIP modem which made it tricky to truly reset the modem to take a new IP address with my cable ISP. There is a backup battery compartment, but when I'm looking for a familiar Duracell or Eveready C, D, A, etc. battery, the lithium ion carteridge battery looks like it's part of the hardware, i.e. not removeable, when in fact it is.
Hope this helps anyone who was at their wits end like me.

  • My HP 6500A Plus is connected to wireless network and web services but won't print email or code

I have my HP 6500A Plus connected to my wireless network and it is registered on the HP Web Services but it will not print the printer email address or code.  I have followed the directions.  I would appreciate your help in this matter.  Dave

    Hey ddwilson9999,
If your printer is telling you that it cannot connect to the server, try these steps.
    1. Find your printer's IP address by printing a network configuration page.
    2. Type you IP address into the address bar of your web browser.
    3. Click on the network tab at the top of the page.
    4. Look at the left hand side and click IPv4 under wireless.
    5. Change the IP settings to Manual.
    6. Enter the printer's IP address, your subnet mask, and your routers IP address or default gateway in the spaces.
    7. Set the Preferred DNS to 8.8.8.8.
    8. Set the Alternate DNS to 8.8.4.4.
    9. Click apply.(You may need to refresh the page if it says processing for longer than a min and click apply again.)
    10. Now try to print the information page.
Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.
If I have resolved your issue, feel free to provide Kudos and make sure you mark this thread as solution provided.

  • WRT54G ver 6 - Can't access internet on peripheral computer

Everything is set up and running for my other computer linked through the router, but I can't quite get this laptop set up.
It doesn't have a LinkSys adapter.  When I open up the Wireless Network Connection Properties Window, I select this wireless service.  It tries to connect to my network.  Asks for the network key, which I put in, then tells me it needs to be 40 or 104 bits.  Is this the same as my password I set up initially onto my router?  If so, why is it giving me the bit error?

Hey..here could be the problem..While installing the router, you must have entered a " passphrase"..Now this "passphrase" will generate either a 10 or a 26 digit no...Your laptop recognises this 10/26 digit no...To get this number try the following steps...
Go to the wired computer..Open IE and type http://192.168.1.1 . Logon to the router set up page by keeping the username blank and "admin" as the default password..On the set up page, click on the " wireless " tab and go to " wireless security " subtab. And check the security key where it says " Key 1 " .

  • MacBook Pro won't connect to wireless network unless tilted

Hi! My MacBook Pro occasionally has trouble connecting to the wireless network in my house, but that can usually be solved by turning Airport off and then back on. Today (very suddenly), Airport disconnected from my network and could not find it again. I tried restarting my MacBook Pro and router multiple times. Finally it was able to connect, but here's the thing: it only works if my MacBook is tilted at an angle. If I try to open a webpage while the MacBook is sitting normally on a flat surface, the page won't load. If I lift one side of the MacBook so that it's tilted at a 45 degree angle, the page will load. Once it's level again the internet will stop working and the Airport signal bars will turn gray.
I've never come across a problem like this before. Everything was running fine this morning. It is so strange and I have no idea what to do! Help, please? Is my Airport dying? Is something loose inside? My MacBook Pro is about 4 years old.

Delete your network from system preferences, network, advanced.
re enter your network you wish to join
If that fails then do a PRAM reset
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    and a SMC reset
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Maybe something to do with the motion sensor
if so try resetting the SMC

I just purchased the 2TB TC and set it up on bridge mode to my att verse which is connected via ethernet cable.  The TC is continually blinking amber and an error message states that a wireless network cannot be found but the uverse is functioning great.  The network name I assigned to the TC is also not appearing among available networks.  How do I remedy this, please?

What OS on the computer you are using to setup the TC?
Did you turn on ipv6 for wireless to link-local... this is essential for network access now??
Try power cycling the network.. start up in correct order.. uverse.. 2min wait.. TC.. 2min wait.. computer.
No luck factory reset and start over. Use ethernet cable as well to the computer to help it.
No luck I can show you manual method.

  • Can't connect to Wireless Network. Officejet 6500a

I just bought an Officejet 6500A and can't seem to have it connect to my wireless network via Ethernet. All the cables are connected, however when I try to install using the network connection I keep gettting an error saying no networks are found.
I have tried the HP Network Diagnostic Utility and even there after it scans it says no wireless networks found. What is the deal? The printout from the printer says it is ready and wired.

    Hi Romex,
The HP Officejet 6500A Plus e-All-in-One (CN557A#B1H) is the only model that offers wireless capability.
The HP Officejet 6500A e-All-in-One (CN555AB1H) only offers wired Ethernet capability.
You can always exchange the product since you didn't know it was Ethernet only.

  • Can't connect to WiFi networks via tray icon, manually adding works fine

I've searched for about a day for anyone having a similar issue and have come up with nothing so far.  I have an older HP laptop with Windows 7 32 bit that is having issues with connecting to WiFi networks.  It will find all available wireless
networks just fine, and when I select mine, it comes up with the prompt to enter my password, however when I hit OK to connect, the prompt disappears and nothing happens or responds afterwards.  A few things that I've tried in order to troubleshoot and
    narrow down the problem:
-I've tried connecting to two different wireless networks; one with WPA2 encryption and one with no encryption, both have the same issue (obviously the non-encrypted wireless network doesn't prompt for a password, but once I hit connect all prompts disappear
and acts as if I did nothing).
-I've added the WPA2 encrypted network manually to my list of wireless networks, and once I do this it connects just fine.  When removed, it disconnects and the issue happens again (this confirms that the wireless password I'm entering is correct and
that there are no issues with the wireless network itself, as well as other devices working flawlessly on the same wireless network).
-I've disabled all firewalls and antivirus through this whole process, did not make a difference.
-I've reset winsock which didn't make a difference.
-I've run a virus scan, no viruses on the laptop.
I've run out of ideas as to what would prevent being able to connect to a wireless network through the normal process of finding nearby access points, putting in your password, and having it work.  I understand that I could simply leave the wireless
network added manually, but this is not an option for when the laptop is taken elsewhere as having to add whatever wireless network I'm near manually is not something that should have to be done.

I would recommend to update the driver for you wireless nic as a first step. Also, if installed, get rid of third party utilities that 'manage' your wireless network(s)
    Also check if you can
clear out the remembered connections i've encountered issues before when a network with same ssid but different connection settings was stored by windows.

  • Can I connect to wireless networks far away?

How do I connect to wireless networks further away?
Is there a way I can improve my laptops wireless range so I can connect to wireless networks further away?

    Hi!
You can only connect to wireless networks that the notebook recognizes. If the notebook recognizes a wireless network, you can connect to them. If it doesnt recognize (because it is further away) you can not connect.
Furthermore you can not improve the wireless range from the laptop. You can do this on a WLAN router, not on the notebook.

  • Connecting to wireless Networks automatically upon boot

    Hi there all,
I have a G4 Laptop with a Airport wirless card in it. I have successfully connected to my wireless network in my home, but I was wanting to automate this process upon booting OSX. So what I want to know is how can I config OSX so everytime it boots, it will automatically connected to my wireless network(without manually doing it)
    Thanks for the help!

Hello jlfutari. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
So what I want to know is how can I config OSX so everytime it boots, it will automatically connected to my wireless network(without manually doing it)
First, create a new Location with your Wi-Fi as the "Preferred Network."
Create a new network Location w/Preferred Network
    o System Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort
    o Location: New Location...
    o Name your new location: <enter a location name>
    o Click "OK"
o Click on the "AirPort" tab to select it.
o By default, join: Preferred networks
o Select a "preferred" network from the list, or click "+" to add a new one.
    o Click "Options..."
o If no preferred networks are found: Ask before joining an open network.
    o Click "OK"
    o Click "Apply Now"
Second, setup AirPort to default to the "Preferred Network."
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
o Verify that AirPort is "On" (checked)
o Verify that AirPort is at the top of the list. If it isn't, you can drag it to the top.
Systems Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort
    AirPort tab
o By default, join: Preferred networks
