Laptop Display Blank unless lid is partially closed

I have an odd repair here. If I start the laptop with the lid open (90 degree angle). The display will not work. Computer turns on, external monitor works, everything operates normal. Even if I close the lid I can see the computer go to sleep, open the lid it comes backs on (except for the display) display remains blank.
Here's the odd part.
If I have the lid at about 45 degree angle, partially open, and turn the laptop on. Viola, screen comes on, I can then open the lid all the way and the computer boots up normal. I can even shut the lid, open it back up. It operates fine. The ONLY problem I'm having is... when I start the computer, the lid has to be partially closed for the first few seconds.
I am suspecting the reed switch is malfunctioning, but I don't see how? Any ideas?

does anyone have a solution to this?
I have the EXACT same problem as the original poster. If I turn on the laptop with the lid open I get a black screen. If i turn on the laptop with the lid open halfway or less I can get an image. Once I get a visual I can then open the lid open the full way and everything is perfectly fine. The lid has to be halfway or less in the opening few seconds after pressing power for some reason. It works perfectly with an external monitor and the inverter was checked and is fine.
The last poster with a solution had a similar problems except he could only open the lid halfway at all times meaning when he pushed the lid up, the wires came lose and he wasn't getting a connection and thus has to solder it together.
How does this problem work? Where the lid only needs to be closed for the first few seconds in order to get a picture?

Thanks very much Coander15... I've printed the doc you pointed me towards and I'll run through it.. hoping it helps!
Before I installed Lion I simply hit any key on the keyboard or clicked the mouse...
The keyboard is USB (usually connected to monitor which is connected to laptop... have tried direct connect to laptop as well with no luck) and mouse is USB wireless to one of those tiny plug in's... have tried direct connect USb mouse as well with no luck.
I could plug the closed/sleeping laptop into the monitor and unplug from the monitor without incident all day/night... always worked fine.
Had heard something about this happening w/ Lion but went ahead anyway.
    Oh well...

  • Radeon HD 7520g Blank Laptop Display

    Hey all,
I'm no expert on linux graphics (or graphics at all for that matter), so please be patient if I don't include everything necessary.
Here's my issue. I've got a laptop with an AMD Trinity APU, a6-4400m. The graphics "card" is a Radeon HD 7520g (as mentioned in the subject). The laptop itself has two outputs, a VGA and an HDMI. I use xrandr to run two monitors, the laptop display and the external. Here's where the fun begins.
    When I run for instance,
xrandr --output LVDS --auto --output HDMI --auto
Everything works fine and my hdmi display is showing in all of its 720p majesty (my TV is cheap   ).
    When I run
xrandr --output LVDS --auto --output VGA-0 --auto
My laptop display (LVDS) goes completely blank, and VGA-0 becomes the only active display. By blank I mean completely off. No backlight and no image (I shined a flashlight on it to verify there was no image). What's really weird is when I run xrandr -q, I see that both LVDS and VGA-0 are connected, screen 0 is expanded to encompass both displays, but LVDS is completely off. The virtual display is there though because my mouse can certainly leave the screen on that side. Also, I've tried this with all kinds of variations of --left-of, --right-of, --same-as, etc.
I have checked my logs and nothing shows up (journalctl -f and Xorg.0.log) that's out of the ordinary. As far as the logs show, X is operating as expected.
One last thing to note, once I've extended my display to VGA-0, LVDS won't come back on when I turn VGA off, unless I recycle both VGA-0 and LVDS and then bring just LVDS back (system management without a screen - try doing that Windows!). There's one other method I discovered today. If I change the LVDS crtc to a different value other than what it presently is. Making that change will cause it to alternate between VGA-0 as the activated and LVDS as the activated.
I would think that LVDS IS the VGA-0 and that all I'm doing by enabling VGA-0 is simply redirecting the output, except extending to VGA-0 works on Windows. Anyone have any thoughts as to what might be going on? I feel like I'm missing something that's staring me in the face.

A little more [hopefully] useful information here.
I just discovered that Xorg.1.log is not just the roll destination for Xorg.0.log... all this time I thought...
Anyways, nothing gets written to Xorg.1.log when I run any xrandr commands, but I did notice this little piece at the bottom of it (written at startup I presume).
Here's a large portion of the end of Xorg.1.log (most of the rest is just loading in drivers and talking about each one's capabilities, especially the ati/radeon driver)

I noticed that line at the bottom there "Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices". I assume that's talking about xrandr "screen 0" and how earlier in the log it created screens 0-3. I'll do more research into that bit of xrandr. That's about where my knowledge stops.

  • MacBook backlight goes off when lid partially closed

My 2yr old MacBook backlight has started turning off when the screen is partially closed. It works fine if the screen is open beyond a certain angle (about 90 degrees), but turns off when the screen is closed beyond that angle. Comparing to another MacBook (newer system): the backlight stays on until the screen/lid is just about closed.
It's definitely the backlight (the logo goes off as well), not the system suspending.
I'm worried this may be an early sign of a general failure.
It's well out of warranty -- any ideas what part should I look at replacing?

I have the mid 2009 MBP - is there a magnet inside the unibody aluminum housing? The lid latch below the track pad is smooth and seems to have some magnetic attraction to the lid itself.
    S.U. -
My problem is that the screen does not go off when the lid is closed. The problems described with the SMC reset involve the screen backlight not turning on. It also says to not reset the SMC unnecessarily. WIll that reset affect anything else?
Tried the paper clip - no joy. Will check with a magnet at work.

    Hi,
Create a play list that you wish to burn. Select playlist, the file from main menu which gives to an option to burn the playlist. A pop up box appears allowing you to select burn speed and disc format.

  • How can I delay my MBP from hibernating until the lid has been closed for a set period of time?

After extensive research, I have been unable to solve this problem and I'm hoping someone can explain this to me.   Everytime I close the lid on my 13-inch, Early 2011 Macbook Pro, it immediately starts to write to disk (solid light on the front) for several seconds until it finally goes into Hibernate mode (flashing light on the front).  The problem is, I frequently close the lid, then immediately reopen it within 15-30 seconds to resume typing or to add something I may have forgotten.   Each time I reopen the lid before the light has started flashing, the MBP wakes for a moment, and allows me to resume typing.  However, the Hibernation process has already begun and within 30 seconds, the screen goes blank.   I have to wake it AGAIN, which is very annoying.
Based on my research, I could use pmset to change the hibernatemode to 0 (it is currently set at 3).   However, I dont wish to disable hibernate mode completely; I DO want it to save a hibernation image to disk if it happens to run out of battery, so that when I resume I havent lost anything.
I then researched using standby and standbydelay to attempt a delay of the write to disk when going into standby mode.   According to the pmset manual:
standby causes kernel power management to automatically hibernate a machine after it has slept for a
specified time period. This saves power while asleep
standbydelay specifies the delay, in seconds, before writing the hibernation image to disk and powering
         off memory for Standby
I then set these values as below, expecting the laptop to wait 4200 seconds (70 minutes) before trying to write to disk when I close the lid:
    standbydelay         4200
    standby              1
Unfortunately, that did not work either.   If I close the lid, the light glows solid immediately (indicating it is writing to disk), and if I try to reopen the lid before it is done, it will wake and seem fine, then 30 seconds later it goes blank right in the middle of me typing something.   I usually have to click the mouse several times, or even the power button to re-wake it.
I do have InsomniaX installed, for when I want to close the lid and keep the machine awake permanently (while watching videos on airplay) and I have tried quitting that application to test this.  However, when I close/reopen the lid..the result is the same.   I cant keep InsomniaX enabled all the time, because it will never go to sleep when I truly want it to.   If I am not using InsomniaX, I just want to delay hibernation until he lid has been closed for a set period (say 15 minutes or more).  If I have not reopened the lid within that time, I want it to write to disk and go into hibernation mode.  And if the battery runs all the way out, I want it to go into hibernation mode before shutting down so I can recover.
I would appreciate any help in solving this problem.  Also any insight as to why the standbydelay setting above did not work.   Thanks!

Whats with the MBP lid? Dont close it ... if you're so concerned! Just go to System Preferences/Energy Saver and set it to how you like it.

  • Attaching external monitor resets laptop display scale

Sometimes when I connect my Thunderbolt monitor to my Macbook the laptop display resets back to no scaling. This ***** because I then have to change it back and fix all my windows. This happens maybe 15% of the time; it's happened many times now.
I've also had one case where on restart the laptop reset the scale. It was not connected to the external monitor when that happened.
Anyone else having this problem? Any ideas on how to fix it?

Hi there ,  Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great site to get answers and ask questions.  I see that you wanted to know if there was a way to hook your Spectre X360 up to an External Monitor and be able to close the lid to your Notebook without it going to sleep. I did some research on this for you also. In Power Options, Choose what closing the lid does, you should have an option that says "Do nothing". Set it to "Do Nothing".  Here is a video for you  this video explains how to change the Power Option settings to "Do Nothing". If you do not see this option, please do all of your driver updates either with the HP Driver's website for your specific Spectre X36 Notebook, or you can do them using the HP Support Assistant. You can change the Power Settings when on battery and when plugged in directly. You could change the settings when you do not have an external monitor plugged in to sleep when the lid is closed.  Thank you for writing on the HP Support Forums!  Have a great day!

  • Laptop display not correct after disconnecting external monitor

I alternate between closed-lid operation connected to an Apple 23" monitor and normal open-top laptop operation. In both set ups, I am using the maximum display resolution - 1680x1250 for the Apple display and 1920x1200 for the laptop display.
After the recent Apple software updates, a problem has now developed that all the menu items in the top right hand of the screen are gone when I switch back to open lid operation. This is intermittent, but seems to hapen most times I switch back.
To get the menu items back, I go into display preferences, select a lower resolution and they all come back. I can then switch back to 1920x1250 and everything is back to normal.
Any ideas how to stop this problem from occurring would be appreciated.
    TIA

    Reset the NVRAM:
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the third time.
    Release the keys.

Text appearance in adobe acrobat (pro) files displays inconsistently unless you zoom in. Mainly 'i's and 'l's look bigger than they should.
    The pdfs print fine though.

Try doing a spotlight search for all files that start with AdobeFnt. They will be named AdobefntXX.lst, with the XX being some number. They will be scattered across the drive... After making sure that all Adobe applications are closed, trash all the adobefntxx.lst files, those with the 3 letter extension .lst.
Then, restart the system, and open the files in Acrobat again.
Otherwise, what happens in Safe boot? (Remember, Safe boot loads only a default set of fonts.) If they display fine there, the problem most likely is a font issue, one of the fonts that Adobe installed.
Check Adobe's web support page for troubleshooting Fonts.

Contact Adobe about the whole issue, it is after all, Adobe Acrobat... Adobe's contact number is 800 833 6687.

  • Laptop display auto turning down

I just installed pm-utils and acpid. Wrote handler on closing laptop and nothing else. So I can not imagine why it goes offline...
the lack of a desktop environment is also useful information.
    pm-utils does not handle dimming.
i dont think you can switch off after a timeout the display with acpid.

  • HDMI/Mini port connect to TV = stays on blank (only background) desktop screen? I have to drag stuff from my laptop to blank desktop screen?

I hope this makes sense. The simplest way I can describe it is…it's as if the TV I am connecting it to recognizes it as another desktop entirely. Sort of like how you drag stuff against multiple screens on your laptop. Only…the TV is just a blank desktop screen (just the background) and no actual icons. In other words, my programs, my finder, all that stuff I have to drag over using my laptop. Is there a way to just display what my laptop displays rather than dragging everything over one by one just to be able to see it on my TV?
I'm using a mini port plugged into HDMI plugged into TV.
    Thanks!

    Using Macbook pro as well.

    sarah,
Check the query in the report. The reason for blank report will be the query returning blank. So check the report's query in SQL *PLUS or other softwares like TOAD, SQL Developer etc.
    Regards,
    Manu.

settigns>itunes and app store to make sure you are signed in.. If  you are, you will see your account name..... anyhow, click your account name, sign out and sign back in
also go to to settings>general>reset and reset network settings... if that doesnt work settings>general>reset and reset all settings!
one of those shall work. The last step would be to restore your device (apple.com/support) HT1414

  • HT5019 MacPro laptop display and 2 external monitors (three displays). Can I have more than one application displayed at a time?

I would like to have my MacPro laptop display and 2 external monitors (three displays). Question, how can I have more than one application displayed at a time? IE: I would like email on one monitor, Finder on my laptop, and iTunes on the other. Possible?
With extended desktop, it appears that I can only have one application presenting at a time. Sort of defeats the purpose of having multiple displays.
I am using the HDMI and the mini HDMI connectors.
