  • IMac display doesn't turn back on after sleep

This is a new problem on my two-year old iMac, and didn't happen before. What is happening with my iMac is that when it goes to sleep and the display turns off, the display doesn't turn back on when I move the mouse, press the keys or the power button.
It happens only after around 12 hours or so of inactivity, it seems. I have to reboot the iMac to force the display to turn back on. I think it is display issue, not the computer lockup because I checked which logs were written in /var/log - system.log was being written until I rebooted the iMac. However, I didn't see any information in there around the same time that I tried to turn the iMac back on.
Any ideas on how to debug the issue.

    Hi dailyjoe
    1. Reset your SMC exactly as instructed in the following article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
    2. It would be normal for you to have to startup your iMac if it lost power while in sleep mode, look at the box "Start up automatically after a power failure" in the Energy Saver preference.
I have always left the box for "Start up automatically after a power failure" unchecked and do occasionally find the iMac is shutdown because the power has gone off. I would suggest leaving the box unchecked, it's better than having the iMac going off & restarting multiple times if you are having bad weather or power issues.

  • Thunderbolt Display doesn't turn

hi there, here is the issue, i got a MB-P 15" late 2013 (from work) and a TBH 27", recently doesn't turn on the display when the cable is connected, i have tried with others MBP from my mates, and is the same story, doesn't work, the charger cable if it works but the mini display port doesn't, ( funny thing is that light of the mouse turn off when the display port is connected).
    what could be the problem?

I am having a similar problem with a 15" MacBook pro with retina display.  I got it working once after resetting the SMC and the the PRAM (Internet search for instructions).  Howerver I have not gotten it to work again so I would be curious if this solves your problem.

  • I5 27" imac display doesn't turn on

    Hi,
This issue just cropped up for me this morning. When I go to turn on my recently purchased (Feb 2011) core i5 27" iMac, the screen doesn't turn on. Instead, it remains black until I hit the power button again, after which it will usually come to life. It sometimes goes black again without any warning. I can usually get the screen to come back to life if I hit the power button. However, I have an older 24" cinema display hooked up as a second monitor, and it always comes to life when I start up, and never goes black like the iMac display. Anyone else having this problem? Are there any known/recommended solutions?
    Thanks!

Reset the SMC > Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
and zap the PRAM > Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Then if that doesn't help, contact Apple Support or your Local Apple Service Provider. > Apple - Support - iMac - Service FAQ

  • My iPad Mini with Retina Display doesn't turn on.

I have an iPad Mini with Retina Display and I have tried charging it every way I know how. I have a 13" MacBook Pro retina and that didn't charge the device nor did the original 10W charger that came with the iPad. Nothing works to charge it and it doesn't turn on. I don't recall the battery being anywhere near 0% the last time I used it either which also seems odd. Does anyone know why this could be happening or do I need to m

Plug your device into the original charger & block in a wall outlet and leave it alone for a couple of hours. Then, while it is still plugged in, restart it by holding down the home button and the power button for 10-15 seconds until you see the Apple, then let go.

  • Laptop display no longer turning off at lowest brightness

As of updating my system a week or two ago, I can no longer completely turn of my laptop monitor with the backlight keys. Before, the lowest brightness setting would be a completely black monitor, but now the lowest brightness is just a dim screen. I'm not sure if this has to do with some kernel update or my desktop environment, GNOME 3. One thing that might be important, is that `xbacklight -set 0` used to turn the display off, but now it also just puts it at the lowest brightness.
Does anyone know why this is happening?

    Hi gsingh93,
first of all, xbacklight cannot completely turn off your monitor: all it can do is to set the brightness level to its minimum value (and this can result in a very very dark screen) but it will leave the lcd turned on. If you want to switch off your monitor you should follow the ArchWiki instructions).
Now, can you provide the output of the following commands?
xbacklight -set 0 && xbacklight -get
Also, what is the graphics card of your laptop? It is a dual GPU system or it has only an integrated one?
Does it work if you manually set the backlight level to zero using a command like the following?
tee /sys/class/backlight/$your_backlight/brightness <<< 0 #this must be run as root
    cat /sys/class/backlight/$your_backlight/brightness
where the value of $your_backlight depends on your graphics card model (again take a look to the ArchWiki)
    @markzz
markzz wrote:...but it seems that X no longer allows this to happen...
It is not true, xbacklight can set the brightness level to zero on my Samsung NP530U3C-A03IT with an integrated intel graphics card and my system is fully upgraded.

  • When I open the MacBook Pro, display doesn't turn on!

I have a new MacBook Pro. It doesn't seem to wake from sleep. Also, when it is operating, it doesn't respond when I try and put it to sleep. Lastly, sometimes when I shut the computer, I notice that it will remain very warm for a long time in my bag, even though it isn't plugged in. These all seem very related.
    Any Suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Tim

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I also had some sleep problems with my new (in September) MBP running 10.4.10. Mostly a tendency to freeze if the display went to sleep, which does not seem to be the same problem that yours has. When I went to Leopard, all of these problems vanished.
Is yours asleep or frozen? If the sleep light is steady instead of pulsing, it may be frozen. And it should not freeze.
I have never had a problem with the MBP getting warm in my bag, but then, I always shut it down rather than put it to sleep. But I have heard of others getting warm. The MBP uses its aluminum skin to cool itself, and that doesn't work well in a bag. So I don't think it's good to put it in a bag asleep although I am sure others will disagree with this.
Since it's new and under warranty, you can always take these issues up with Apple.
    Good luck!

  • Retina iMac Display doesn't turn on

    Hi guys,
my new iMac just arrived. I unpacked it, put it on my desk and turned it on... The "turn-on"-sound was there, but the display is blinking just for a second on, and then it turns off - a few seconds later it turns for a moment on and then it turns off again... In that moments in which the screen is on, I can see the setup display...
So what should I do? I can call no one from Apple Support because there's no one there anymore
The iMac is brand new and came right out of Shanghai
Did someone else did have this problem?
    Greetings,
    Linda

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • New display doesn't turn on without computer?

Sorry for the noob question, but I ended up getting my brand new 30" display before the mac.
I wanted to verify that the unit was functioning properly and without physical damage so I have it set up and plugged in but the display remains unresponsive.
Do apple displays require a DVI connection before it will power on? I can "hear" electricity going into the power brick going to the display so I'm sure it's getting enough power.
Thanks for your help in advance.

    Thanks for the response.
I don't get a flash or any sort of feedback from a plugged in ACD when I touch the power button.
The accompanying Mac Pro isn't due to ship until Monday, so I probably won't get to put it to the real test until the end of next week.
I'm crossing my fingers that the ACD isn't DOA!!
Also, the ACD is plugged into a APC UPS unit, but that wouldn't make a difference would it?

  • Macbook Pro Screen doesn't turn on?

So, I have a late 2011 Macbook Pro 15". About two weeks ago, my macbook screen just stopped working. I shut it down, and since then it's been practically "dead". The display doesn't turn on, the logo on the back is off; Essentially, the whole display of the mac doesn't get powered on.  However, the startup noise is still there when I turn it on. I've been using it in a monitor as of now and it works fine with the monitor. This is the thing though, the screen is perfectly fine!! About a week ago in the morning when I turned it on, the display turned on. the screen had been white, and the apple logo popped up, it looked completely fine. Sadly I had to go to school and when I came back, no matter how many times I restarted it or did anything to it, the screen would just not turn on. Yesterday, I was showing my friend and restarted it, turned it on, then nothing. Tried it again while doing random keyboard strokes and the display turns on. Excitement in my eyes, it actually restarts and for the first time in two weeks I was to see my desktop and see my mouse moving around, all the icons, everything! The display and everything on it was working perfectly normal, no noise, no distortion, no odd colour, no issues on the display at all. My friend boots it to windows and the display stops working and again since then it hasn't worked. It's alive and perfectly normal in there, but I just don't know how to give it what it needs to bring it back that way.
Does anyone know anything to help me on this? It's quite frustrating when you see it work, then shut off. I can't use it at school to do my work anymore and it's such a nuisance.

You have a hardware problem. More than likely it is the cable that goes from the logic board to the display. It sounds like an internmitent short. Works sometimes not at other times.
The only way to fix a hardware problem is to replace the faulty piece of hardware and the only people that do that is either an Apple store or an Apple authorized repair center. That is unless you can diagnose the actual failed hardware part, find one from an Aftermarket Mac parts seller and replace the part yourself.

  • Dropped 12" powerbook - HD fine, powers up but display doesn't come on

I'm trying to fix a dropped 12" powerbook. The battery corner took the impact. I've taken it apart and removed the HD which was fine and backed that up. When I turn on the powerbook it seems to power up fine, but the display doesn't turn on. Though it's possible that there's power but something earlier in the boot sequence is broken and is stopping it booting. Any suggestions as to things to try?
Also, there's a DVD in the slot drive, and ideas on how to get that out?

    m...mac,
You may wish to head over to the Powerbook G4 forums for more specific help; good luck.

  • Laptop display auto turning down

My laptop display is turned down automatically after 20 minutes of idling. Now i want to disable this function, but I can not find a config where it can be done (not in pm configs nor in acpid confs). Please give me advice what should I do.

I just installed pm-utils and acpid. Wrote handler on closing laptop and nothing else. So I can not imagine why it goes offline...
the lack of a desktop environment is also useful information.
    pm-utils does not handle dimming.
i dont think you can switch off after a timeout the display with acpid.

Your Mac can't find any bootable partition.
    1. Insert the Mac OS X DVD that came with the Mac and press C key while your Mac is starting.
    2. Select Utilities > Disk Utility, choose Macintosh HD in the sidebar and repair the disk. If it doesn't work, take the Mac to an Apple Store.
Also, open  > Startup Disk, select Macintosh HD and restart. Maybe your Mac has forgotten the startup partition
