Laptop doesnt shut down properly or sleep

There seems to be a big problem with my laptop. It seems to not shut down properly, or awake from sleep properly. When it goes to sleep, you need to hold down the power button to turn it off, then turn it back on again Also when you shut it down, the fan seems to be on, the light on the power button seems to be on, so you once again have to hold down the power button to turn it off that way to turn it back on I've updated the bios and rolled them back, and still getting this problem Pavilion p157na Thanks

  • Laptop won't go to sleep mode and shut down properly.

hello,           My name is Atul and i upgraded my laptop hp pavilion 15-p017tu from win 8.1 to win 10 on 29h july. My laptop was working great before the upgrade and before upgrading i updraded ( updated ) all the drivers and windows too.          so, after the upgrade i have been facing the same problem which has been shared by many peple here..i.e win doesn't go to sleep mode. In my case when ever i put the sys to sleep mode, the screen turns off but the power button doesn't blinks and i can't go back to the normal mode by using mouse curser or pressing the power button back. I have to physically shut down the system by pressing the power button for 5 seconds.         Also, my system won't shut down properly and it is the same as the sleep mode probem. I have contacted the customer care of microsoft and hp both and they did some setting changes but the problem keeps coming back. I have also told by the hp care that they will take atleast a month or two to fix this as this may be due to hardware not supporting the current driver so this might take time. They also told me to just downgrade to win 8.1 and after sometime when this poblem is fixed i can again install and upgrade win 10. If any of you guys know how to fix this problem do share it here.      thanks!!

  • HP DV6 3209 TX does not shut down properly & sometimes very slow

    Hi,
I bought a HP Pavilion dv6 3209 tx laptop only one month ago. It provided Win Home Basic. I tried to install Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick along with it, from a pendrive .... I didn't get installed, & at that time, The screen suddenly became colourful with some bizarre symbols !! I shut it down with the power key.
Since then, The home basic became very slow, cpu usage often reaches 100% or very high even while idle, does not shut-down properly.
Then I formatted the hard disk,clean-installed Win 7 Pro (Got it from msdnaa) as well as ubuntu maverick. Now when I restart the system, it shuts down & restarts. But if shut down, then the desktop goes blank, but the fan keeps running, power indicator keeps glowing, system never shuts down till the power key is long-pressed. Also, The CPU usage becomes very high, sometimes it's normal.
I'm confused. Is that any hardware issue ? Do I need to format it again, install xp sp3 & check it if the problems remain ? Please help !!
when the lappy runs in Ubuntu, it's operating speed or CPU usage is normal ..... even when I'm writing this reply from Win 7, everything is normal, but sometimes it's not so smooth...... task manager shows CPU usage as 90 % or more !! I've decided to install xp & then check if the shutdown issue & slowness remains there too.

    SOLUTION  :
Open the BIOS (at the starting press f10).
    f9 to restor default
Then save and exit (press f10 again)
    Restart the computer.
Do this again and set it back to "Enable" that wil help the computer to not over heat.
And now your ROVE will start and sleep correctly.

  • My Satellite laptop (A305) shuts down when run on the AC charger/adapter

The problem is that my Toshiba _A300 series laptop (A305) shuts down when you try to run it on the AC charger/adapter_. You can boot it with the power cord plugged in and it will get to Windows Desktop and maybe a few minutes more at most before shutting off.
It will boot and _run from battery without problem_, but if you plug in the AC while it is up and running on battery the machine will normally click off instantly and reboot to the message "Windows was not shut down correctly."
The _AC adapter works fine_ reading a steady 19.19 to 19.20 volts with a voltmeter. It also _charges the battery fine when the computer is off_. I have two Toshiba brand batteries and they both work fine.
One interesting thing is that the _computer runs fine on AC when in safe mode_.
I _did a reformat/factory restore_ of Vista to assure it was not software and drivers, and still got the same problem before any external devices had been plugged in.
It has the latest BIOS and I tried resetting it to default values in case anything had gotten changed. It made no difference.
This is _not a heating issue_ because _while it is run on battery I can watch long videos_ without it shutting off. I ran compressed air through the vents just to make sure, but it makes no difference in behavior. Usually with an overheating shut-off, the computer cannot be started until it has cooled some, but these shutdowns are accompanied by an instant reboot.
I have seen on some threads that this type of problem one can work around by disabling one of the processors in Device Manager, but I don't think that is much of a lasting solution or good for the computer.
Has anyone seen this problem before and have you come with a full diagnosis of the problem and a real solution?

I have Satellite A300 and until now everything works OK.
I would like to know what happen when you remove the battery and use notebook with power supply only. Does notebook shuts down again.
If not let OS run and put the battery.
Is the battery recognized properly? Does notebook switch off again?
To be honest I cannot imagine this issue has something with software or background processes. Recovery image you got with your notebook is designed for this certain notebook mode. Recovery image is tested and I dont think preinstalled OS has anything to do with this.
    Full diagnosis?
And how to do this? You know very well that diagnosis can be done with diagnostic tools only and such tools have services only. I hope you will find answers but Im 99% sure there is nothing you can do about that. Maybe you should contact service, explain the situation and ask for help.

  • My ipad won't shut down properly

My ipad will not sleep nor shut down properly. When I plug it in it freezes.  Any solutions to this?

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely.  Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.

  • G5 shutting down rather than sleeping

    Hi,
In the past few days my iMac G5 (approx. three years old) has been shutting itself down rather than going into sleep mode. I know it is not an issue of sleeping and not reviving because the power pulse light is not on. No problems in normal operation (i.e. does not shut down suddenly or unexpectedly during use).
I haven't done anything out of the ordinary or added any software recently. I did have to unplug the computer rather than shutting down properly over the weekend when it froze and wouldn't respond to command/option/escape while I was finishing a backup of iTunes (manual backup, last disc out of 13).
We normally let the computer sleep rather than shut it down--I downloaded & ran iJanitor last night on the rec of some other past discussions on similar topics but to no avail.
    Thanks for any help.

I am having the exact same issue that BSeque described initially. For me, the shutdown only happens after I send the iMac to sleep - for example, it will shut itself off overnight. It never occurs if I am actively using any applications.
It also seems to be taking a long time when "finding local drives" on startup which it never did previously (about two minutes of just that message on the screen during startup). My wife has reported a loud noise upon startup on several recent occasions, and I have also had to pull and replace the power cord several times recently when the normal power up procedure wouldnt work.
I am also in the number range for the repair extension, but am interested in knowing if there are any steps to take before I bring it to the Apple Store.
After reading a suggestion on another post, I pulled some of the system logs. Here is a sample sequence for one of the time periods when shutdown occurred involuntarily:

  • My rove does not shut down properly

Recently my HP ENVY Rove 20 Mobile AiO PC has stopped shutting down properly. I select shutdown and the computer powers off the screen and disables the keyboard and mouse, and then stops doing anything. The power button remains illuminated, and I can hear/feel the fan working. I went into setting and turned off the fast restart option, but this has not had any effect on the problem. I did a command prompt also to no avail.
Please help me out here, this is very frustrating I received this machine as a Christmas present so its only a month old.

    SOLUTION  :
Open the BIOS (at the starting press f10).
    f9 to restor default
Then save and exit (press f10 again)

  • Shuts down instead of sleep

I have tried everything!  I have even restored to factory settings and the problem still exists.  Instead of going to sleep my computer shuts down.  I have checked power options and they look fine however when I change anything in the options it still shuts down instead of sleeps.  I am thinking this must be a windows update issue but don't know which one.  I have tried everything on every forum I found but no luck.  Please help!
    TIA

Not sure what to look for with USB software, I haven't really installed
anything that I know of is there a list of this USB online somewhere? The
laptop was new in August 2014, I got the Windows 8.1 update like the other
person did and it took forever. I think he counted 120 software updates. I
did not count them but it sure took a long time. That was about 3 months
later in November. Ever since then I've had the same problem and have tried
different things to circumvent it. It certainly appears to me that the
Lenovo has a severe bug in wakening from hibernate in 8.1 that was not
there in 8.0. And they should fix it. I'm about ready to throw the darn
thing out. Most of the time it doesn't come back from hibernate, you can
hear the fan run when you open the lid but it does not come up. other times
it does nothing until you press and hold down power. I thought HP was bad.
    Makes me scream Apple!

  • My computer shuts down instead of sleeps when battery drains...

    Hi there!
So, I just got a new MacBook Pro (the better 15" one) in June. I've noticed, however, that when my battery drains, and the little warning comes up that says "your computer will go to sleep in a few minutes to preserve data," if I let it run all the way out, it doesn't go to sleep but just shuts down. When I reopen my computer after plugging it in, all my stuff is back, but I do have to press the power button and start it up again.
My old computer (White MacBook 2006) always actually went to sleep, and only if I let it sleep for a long time did it shut off.
Have they changed the behavior? Do the laptops only shut down, and no longer sleep when the battery is gone? Or is something wrong with my computer. I'm getting all my data back, and all the windows and stuff are still open, so that's not a problem for me, but if my computer is working incorrectly only three months after buying it, then I'd like to know...
Thanks! Let me know what further information you need to help!

Your computer is not shutting down — it's hibernating, also called "safe sleep". This is indicated by the fact that everything you were working on is undisturbed when you wake it by pressing the power button.
The contents of RAM are written to the hard drive before the machine enters safe sleep, so that if the battery drains completely before you wake it, the contents of RAM (including your unsaved work) won't be completely lost. This is different from ordinary sleep, in which the machine simply suspends all activity without writing anything to disk. If the machine went into ordinary sleep after giving you a low-battery warning and not getting any cooperation from you (i.e. you didn't heed the warning and plug in AC power), and then you didn't wake it for twelve or fifteen hours, the battery might have gone completely dead and your unsaved work would be lost.
In short, yes, this is new behavior compared to several years ago, and from what you tell us, your machine is working exactly as it's supposed to.

  • Macbook shuts down instead of sleeps

I have a 2ghz core duo macbook (modle No. A1181 (EMC 2092)) that I recently restored from a time machine backup. It was at 10.5.5 and now its at 10.6.8. So, right now I close the lid of the macbook and immediatly shuts down instead of sleeping. The previous macbook (the one I made the back up from) didn't have this problem and nor did this one before the upgrade. I have already tried resetting the smc and the pram. Anyone have any ideas?

Having never shutdown my laptop, I was guessing on its reaction to closing the lid. So, I shutdown my MBP and closed the lid. It did continue the shutdown, so there seems to be a problem with yours.
Sometimes, sleep and shutdown issues can be solved by resetting the SMC

  • HP laptop not shutting down

My laptop has encountered a problem.
When I shut it down, it does not get off. black screen comes, but the light still continues to glow. I tried it for 30 minutes but the light did not get off. So I am a bit tensed about it. Please someone help.

    Darsh,
    Welcome to the HP Forum.
You did not say which Operating System you are running.
In general, when this happens, and everyting else is OK with the computer, then it is a sign that there is a program that is not shutting down properly -- a program is stuck spining in circles.
The "something stuck" might be one of your programs, that is, something you installed - a game that did not shut down properly.  The "something stuck" might be a regular system program that should have stopped but is not doing so because the program running is corrupted and cannot stop like it should.
EXAMPLE:  Use the Task Manager to check what is running just before you shut down the system.
How to Use the New Task Manager in Windows 8
The problem could be due to an Update that is stuck.
The problem could be due the system needing one or more Updates.
The problem could be due to a driver that is in need of being resintalled.
A Hard Reset might clear the problem:

  • Cannot shut down properly my Equium A60

I am having problems closing down my Equium A60 laptop with OS Windows XP.
If I try to shut down properly nothing happens and I have to manually disconnect the machine which surely can't be good for it even if I am careful to close down running applications first. Even after a Microsoft update when it asks to be shut down if I say yes still nothing happens. Can anyone help?

Maybe something wrong with the operating system files, bad registry entries or like Silas said it's a simply a background process which does not response.
Try to use a free repair tool like "CCleaner".
It's a very nice application which repairs the operating system and the registry keys.
You can find it everywhere. Search simply for download.
If it does not help I think a new OS installation could be advisable!

1 you really should be asking this in one of the iMac forums.
2 to shut down, you can either go to the Apple Menu and select 'Shut Down' or press and hold both the control and CD Eject keys.

  • Satellite P200-144 never shut down properly using Vista Ultimate

Recently did a rebuild of my P200-144. Used recover disk with Vists Home. Then upgraded to Vista Ultimate. After that was complete went to toshiba web site for latest drivers and decided to update bios.
When the laptop was restarted it never shut down properly. Left with no choice but switched it off (left in logging off screen).
Now laptop will do nothing. Is there any way to get the bios to boot / restore itself or do I need to bring this to a support centre.

Hmm looks a little bit like the BIOS update has failed ?:|
Usually in such situation the ASP help is needed.
But before you will contact the ASP and will sent this unit to for the check I would recommend removing the battery and disconnecting the AC adaptor from the notebook.
Then wait about ~20min, then connect both parts again and try to start the notebook.
If you will be not successful then the help from ASP is necessary
    Good luck

(I synced my iphone to my computer if that helps at all).

Yes, and, I try to restore. I have the T-Mobile sim card in it just to clarify. It will not let me get passed that, it does not accept the t-mobile sim card. i tried restoring it using wifi, cellular, and i cant get i tunes. I am scared that if i take the tmobile sim card out and put the at&t one in just to complete the restoration process that the iphone will lock again and not read the tmobile sim card, then all my hard work has gone for nothing. ( this whole process was caused by me trying wanting to empty my pictures onto my computer because i did not have any storage space left). <--- that may not be as important, but i included it just because.
