Laptop dropped - trying to run hard drive test in bios, but can't find

CAn someone tell me how to run a hard drive test in bios - I am not seeing it in the menu at the initial screen after hitting F2. Is there a disk I need to insert?

The BIOS doesn't provide a HD diagnostic. The BIOS is firmware and is limited to providing
basic functions like recognizing devices on the buss or providing the user the ability to
load software to the HD.

  • All music on external hard drive - ITunes 'sees it' but can't find it

a while back i moved all of my music to an external hard drive - i was unaware of all the steps that had to be taken to preserve the ITunes library. Now I've gotten back on ITunes and there's an "!" next to every single song i burned from all of my CDs. Can somebody, please, please tell me 'simply' how to fix this and not refer me to articles. i thought i was computer literate - but I'm just getting fed up now! thanks for your help!

    You have several options:
#1 Find all the files one-by-one by clicking on them and saying yes, you want to find the file, and browsing to it.
    Plus: All metadata is retained.
Minus: Takes freaking forever and requires patience that can soon wear thin.
#2 Edit the iTunesLibrary.XML file using WordPad to point to the new paths, and then use the XML file to recreate the ITL.
Plus: Is a LOT faster than option #1.
Minus: Requires careful editing and loses the Date Added metadata.
#3 Something I tried and it worked, but you could seriously hork things up even worse if you answer hteitunes questions wrong, so I hesitate to mention it - change the itunes folder back to the original place and answer NO you don't want to move the library to the new settings. THen change it back to the exHD location and say yes,but don't have copy file turned on or you'll get duplicates.
Plus: On a 160GB library, it takes about 1 hour to fix all the links
Minus: Potential to mess things up even worse
#4 Start with a blank library and drag everything back in.
Plus: All your music can be played by itunes.
    Minus: Lose all metatdata.
Best of luck, whatever you go with.

  • New cube laptop - not showing Maxtor external hard-drive in windows explorer, but showing up in Device manager.

    Hi
If anyone is able to give me some advice I'd really appreciate it. I have seen similar issues on here and tried uninstalling then re-installing the driver which seemed to fix the similar issue on someone's Windows 7 system but it doesn't seem
to have worked for me. I also tried using the usb 2 drive rather than the usb 3.
I have a new cube laptop with Windows 8 (which I'm not used to yet at all) and am trying to access the files from the Maxtor hard-drive from my old pc. The hard-drive does not show up under file explorer but seems to appear in device manager. The
laptop makes noises occasionally as if it is detecting some hardware but not showing it.
    Can anyone suggest a fix?
    Thanks in advance
    Sadie

    Hi,
    Apologize for the late reply.
How about the situation by now?
Could the external hard drive be shown in the
    disk management?
Or take a look at the format of that hard drive(list disks) with diskpart command:
A Description of the Diskpart Command-Line Utility
Check if the format is NTFS.
Also please take a look at the following article:
Help! After installing Windows 8.1, my USB drive disappears or file transfers
    stop unexpectedly…
    Hope this may help

  • I just transferred my hard drive to an external but I cannot find the location of all of my photographs. A caution message pops up every time I try to open my library. HELP!

Hello! So i'm not super computer savvy so bear with me. I just bought an external hard drive for my ibook and I believe I transferred everything to the external from my laptop. But, I'm having trouble finding all of my photographs on the external hard drive and I'm afraid I've lost a number of them because I deleted a large amount once I made the transfer. When I try to open my library from the external hard drive, a caution message pops up. I've looked at a number of discussion forums and tried to open iphoto with the option key to open a different library but there is only one library available and it takes me back to the photo library as it is on my laptop hard drive. Any suggestions? Does this mean I lost the photos I deleted? And if so, will someone help me learn how to trasnfer files properly?
    Thanks!
    Blair

When I try to open my library from the external hard drive, a caution message pops up.
    Exactly what do you see?

  • Can't see shard hard drive on my mac, but can on both my pcs.

I just bought and hooked up my airport extreme. After having my room mate switch out his old networking devices and getting frustrated with trying to set it all up, I finished the job. I have the printer hooked up and can print from the 3 computers in the house. We wanted to hook up a shared hard drive so we can share work related materials. We plugged in the hard drive and both his pc and laptop can see and use it, but I can't find it anywhere.
What am I doing wrong? How can I get it to where I can put my files on the hard drive also?

    any help?

  • Lost my external hard drive and now Snow Leopard can't find it

I was doing some maintenance with Onyx (repair permissions, clean caches) and something happened to my external hard drive that I use for Time Machine. Snow Leopard no longer recognizes that the drive exists. It is not listed as a drive in the Mac HD window and is not listed in the Time Machine preference window as a choice for use by Time Machine.
I have already tried the following: (1) unplugged the external drive and replugged it into the back of my iMac (2) restarted the iMac both with and without the external drive plugged in (3) shut down the iMac and restarted both ways (4) pulled the plug on the iMac and restarted. Nothing works and the drive remains unrecognized. In all the attempts, I can feel that the external drive is spinning and it is still warm to the touch. It appears to be working.
    Can anyone help?

I am also having similar issues with my Mac Pro (OSX 10.6.3). I have been using a WD external HD for months now with my Time Machine, and I just today realized the drive is not showing anywhere on my Mac and the last backup was on 4/4/2010 (connected via firewire 400 port). Additionally, my old Maxtor drive I previously (not currently) used for Time Machine was also not shown anywhere. I then connected the Maxtor via a USB port instead of firewire, and it will now show in my Disk Utility but will not mount. I ran a "verify disk" on the Maxtor drive and no errors were found. The WD disk cannot be found even in Disk Utility. Getting nervous about my backups.

  • My hard drive is nearly full but I cant find whats  taking up all my hard drive space

I have an intel macbook pro with 500 internal HD.
I have 160gb of music in my itues folder with another 7gb on a previous library, I am unable to find the size info of my applications folder but I susspect it to be around 50gb, however I only have 59 gb of free HD space remaining. How to I find out what is using the remainder od my hard drive space? I have not yet checked my iphoto. where would this be? Is there someway of checking to see what folders are the bigest on my hard drive?
I can's work out why my disk is so full.
    Any help greatly appreciated. :-)

  • Hard Drive fills up and I can't find what is filling it

I have twice in the last month received a warning that my hard drive was very full and I should move some files. I had abou 300 MB free. The first time it did this I cleared it until I had about 11 G free. I was careful to quickly move files after that.
When it happened last week, I didn't have much I could remove, so I cleared out Garageband and some other items and cleared 6G.
I decided to do a new install of Tiger and first backed up the files by moving them into a folder on my LaCie hard drive. When I moved everything from the hard drive, it amounted to only 10.5 G.
I re-installed using the archive system rather than a clean re-install. My reason for this is that I have one Classic Application (Adobe Pagemill) which I still use and I didn't want to lose the capacity to use Classic.
Today I did a disk repair -- a couple of trees needed fixing -- but the outcome was still that I had only 5.6 G free on a 38.5G drive. I can account for 10 so that would mean there are about 25 G of stuff that I can't account for or find to dump.
    Can anyone help me?

    Hi, Sheila —
Edit: Great news! SInce I'd already written this when I saw your 2nd post, I thought I'd post it anyway, as it includes a couple of other suggestions...
        (1) You may find Dr. Smoke's Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk FAQ useful.
        (2) What about "invisible" files? Many folks facing problems like you describe eventually discover just how much space is taken up by invisible files — not accessible by Finder — and that some of them may be unnecessary. For example, if you've ever used Norton Antivirus, it may have have created spacesuckingfile.xxxxxx — a huge (and hidden) file that you'd definitely want to "seek-and destroy." (This article tells how.)
The 3rd-party utilities WhatSize or OmniDiskSweeper can help you to identify "invisible" files that may be using a lot of disk capacity — but, if you don't know what something is/does, please don't delete it. Post back for help.
Anyway, my guess is that between (1) and (2), you'll be able to "clean house" pretty well...
        (3) Btw, I'm confused why you'd think that an erase & install process would preclude your using Classic... would you please explain the basis for that idea?
    HTH!     and
    Warm regards,
    Dean

  • My hard drive crashed and now I can't find my playlists.

Had to have my hard drive replaced and now I lost all of my playlists. How do I get them back?

In which case, unless you have an existing subscription to iTunes Match, you're out of luck. I could have helped pull back the media and playlists from the device if they hadn't been wiped already.
I guess you could take a look at this iLounge Article anyway. In some cases the database on a device can be wiped without actually deleting the hidden media content. Even if it has been wiped there may be a chance that an undelete tool could restore the deleted files, but it is a long shot. Either way the playlists are gone for good.
For the future see Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy. The tool can also be used to backup other important documents and data.

  • Trying to run GPU sniffer .exe with CMD but it cannot find the Adobe folder.

    Hi there.
I am trying to get Hardware acceleration on Adobe premiere pro. Ive done this a few times before no problem. I do this by typing this into cmd.

It does the same thing when I copy the directory from Explorer directly into cmd.

  • Shared external drive on Leopard machine but can't find it on Tiger Machine

I use an external drive connected to my MacBook Pro (leopard 10.5.4) for all my data/music/photos etc and want to share it on the network so my wife can access it from her macbook (tiger 10.4.11). I have selected it and set permissions in file sharing window but when connecting from the macbook, whether logging in as guest, with an account set up for my wife or as myself, i am presented with same options each time of either mounting the macbook pro's hard disk (no use) or my public folder (which i don't want to use). The external drive is nowhere to be found. Thought I'd done the right things - does anyone know where I am going wrong - do I need to get leopard on the macbook too? Don't really want to if there's another way...

This works for me between my PowerBook (10.4.11) and MacBook (10.5.5) using both registered and Guest accounts (with Maxtor One Touch drives connected to the MacBook).
Thus you don't need to buy Tiger. You do need to check your configuration.
    1) Add the drive to the Sharing preference list by clicking on the "+" button under Shared Folders. I generally share the whole drive
    2) Set the permissions as you want them to be. I have tested my own account and "Everyone" with Read/Write permissions.
    Cheers,
    Rodney
