Laptop Dual Drive configuration with SSD

I would like to get an opinion on what configuration would give me the best performance on my laptop.
I have a Dell Studio 17.  It has two drive bays.  Quad core processor, and 8 gig of ram.
I am going to re-install the OS (Win 7 Ultimate).
I will have two hard drives.  One, a 250gig Kingston Solid State Drive.  Two, a Seagate 750gig 7200rpm w/16meg cache.
I am thinking of using the 250gig for the OS, and 750 for data.
So here is my question, would I install CS5 on the C (solid state) drive since it is faster?  and where would the best place to put media and scratch files be?
I can put it all on C being that it is a solid state drive and much faster, but then I am only using one drive controller.  Or, should I split it up and utilize both drive controllers.  Of course, I suppose that Dell only used one drive controller for both drives in which it's a mute point.  But I don't know this for sure.
Anyway, open to any opinions.  Including installing the OS on  the larger slower drive, maybe using some partitions, leaving the 250 gig Solid State as the CS5 drive.
Thanks

I did some benchmarks using PerformanceTest 7.0
What is interesting to me is that I had partitioned my 2nd drive to put my CS5 projects on.  Scratch is on C.
The B drive, and D drive is the same drive, just two different partitions.  I don't know why, but the B partision is slower than the D partition.
B is 112gig with 50gig free, and D is 340gig with 65gig free.  But being the same physical drive, I would think they would have the same performance.
Anyway, also included in the benchmark is drive M, which is my external drive connected both as a USB drive, and an ESATA drive.
The ESATA benchmark is pretty good, beating the B drive in all tests, and close to the D drive.
Of course the SSD drive beats them all in all tests.
Can't wait for these to come in a terabyte at affordable prices.  !!

  • Dual-Drive imac with Bootcamp/Win7 and storage

    I have a Dual-Drive iMac with a 1TB SSD(primary) and a 6TB SATA(secondary) harddrive.
I have BOOTCAMP on the primary with Windows 7. I happen to be primarily a windows user. So I would like to use(read and write) most of the 6TB on the SATA drive as my  windows storage. I would like to know if this is possible and if so how could I  go about this without destroying the contents in the SATA drive(some mac folders).
Appreciate it, if someone could point me to the right resources or instructions to do this.
    Thanks.

Thank you for the response. Here are answers to your questions:

  • Dual drive configuration HDD upgrade advice

I have an Early 2009 17" MBP that currently has an 80GB Intel SSD and a 500GB HDD.  The SSD has the apps and system files, the HDD has my Users folder and all my data.  I'd like to upgrade both drives (120GB SSD and a 750GB HDD) and would like some advice on the best way of doing this.
Would it be best to just get a full TM backup of my current config, then install the new drives, do a clean install of OS X and then restore from the TM backup?  Is there a better/easier way of doing things?

Get an external drive drive enclosure for notebook drives. When you get the two new drives install one at a time into the external enclosure then clone the internal drive to it - SSD to SSD then HDD to HDD. After you have cloned the SSD verify that the new SSD boots the computer. If all is well then swap the old drives for the new ones.
You should clone the drives using Disk Utility.

  • Laptop hard drive changing to ssd

Hello, I bought a HP Envy 360x 15 u363cl laptop that has a 1TB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive  i was wondering if i could replace my hard drive with an solid state drive? If my laptop is capable of having the hard drive replaced.

    Hi there
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel. I understand that you are looking for information about possible upgrades for hard drives. Here is the HP ENVY x360 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide, inside you will find the supported hard drives. Of course you could try installing others as long as they have the correct connection. The only listed is the SATA connector. I hope this helps.

  • Hard drive configuration with Promise Raid controller

I plan on running two 30 gig 75GXP drives on the Promise controller in Raid-0 mode.  I also have a 60 gig WD drive that I use for backups and for initial installation.  During installation, I put the Win98SE setup files and all the drivers, apps, backup data, etc. on the WD drive and do a clean install from there.
My current (old) board is an Abit KT7-R with the Highpoint raid controller.  Using the Highpoint controller, I am able to put the WD drive as a slave device and the controller treats it as a normal IDE drive.  I'm moving to the 845 Ultra ARU.  From what I've read, if you put a single drive on the Promise controller, it tries to set it up as a Raid drive?  I don't want to risk losing my backup data on the WD drive to some attempt by the Promise controller to "raid" my single drive.  So, where is the best place to put my WD drive so that I can install my system from it?  I'm thinking about putting it as Master on IDE2.  I normally run my CD as Master on IDE1.  Once the installation is complete, I will remove the installation files from the WD drive and use it exclusively for backups.  I have the WD drive in a Vantec EZ-Swap rack, and I normally keep it powered off unless doing a backup.
So, the plan is to create the Raid-0 array, Fdisk and format the array, and then load Windows from the WD drive, followed by all my applications.  Is Master on IDE-2 the best solution for the WD drive?

    hi
not very clued up on raid but it sounds right
if the wd drive is on its own on that ide do not jumper
as master you have to have no jumpers if all alone

  • Best hard drive configuration with two drives

    Hello,
I am considering adding a second hard drive to my blue and white g3. It currently has the original Quantum 12GB Ultra ATA/33 hard disk (ATA 33 is capable of about 33 MB/s).
I would install a FirmTek SeriTek/1S2 card (2 Internal SATA Ports) and then I would add a 160 GIG or a 250 GIG Maxtor hard drive. The hard drive would probably be a Maxtor DiamondMax 10, or a Maxtor MaXLine III. I will also consider the Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 as well. I think all these drives are 7200RPM.
The final result will be that my G3 will have two hard drives, the original 12GB Ultra ATA/33 and also a 160 GIG 7200RPM drive.
What is the best way for me to manage my data with this setup?
What exactly is a "boot volume" or a "boot drive"? Are there boot volume strategies than enable your computer to be faster and more efficient? Do I need a boot volume and if so, on which drive should I create a boot volume?
I am currently using OS9 however I will be moving to OS10.1.5 soon and then perhaps to OS 10.4 panther later.
Should I put the OS on the original 12GB Ultra ATA/33 or on the new 160 GIG 7200RPM drive?
How about the applications? Which drive should they be stored on?
My main programs are the Adobe Creative Suite programs (Photoshop and Illustrator) as well as Macromedia Dreamweaver.
If my OS and apps are more than 12 GIGS and they are unable to fit on the 12GIG drive together, should I put the OS and apps on the larger 160 GIG drive and not use the 12GIG drive at all? Or does it make more sense to use the 12 GIG drive for just the OS and then the 160GIG drive for the apps and everything else (such as my stock photo collection)? Should I partition the 160 GIG drive?
    Thank you for any advice.
PS Does any one know of a place to buy a SATA drive such as a Maxtor MaXLine III for a good price? Are Maxtor DiamondMax 10 as reliable as Maxtor MaXLine III? Is Maxtor MaXLine III worth the cost difference? Or would anyone recommend any other good brand of a hard drive? I will need about 160 GIGs or maybe 250. Thank you.

...Should I partition the 250 GIG drive as mentioned in my original post (system and apps in one partition and data in another all on the same drive)? Or is it OK to leave it as one large volume?...
Partitioning the drive "half-and-half" would probably be a good idea.
...What utility should I use to partition it if I decide to partition?...
Disk Utility can do that, just make sure to do the partitioning when you first install the drive.
... I will also need a good ATA card that will work with both OS9 and OS10- any recommendations?...
I have one of these and it has been working well.
It is $60, which is the lowest price I know of for a Mac card.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16816123110
...could anyone recommend a good ATA 250 GIG hard drive (PATA - not SATA) for the purpose of graphic design applications (photoshop and illustrator)?...
Any name brand drive should be fine (Seagate, Western Digital, Maxtor, etc.).
Stay away from PC-branded drives though (Dell, etc.),
    some don't work on Macs.
Some drives in the 250GB size range have 16MB of cache, that and 7200RPM would have the best performance, but might be overkill considering the PCI speed bug (it wouldn't hurt though).
Note: Most regular ATA cards are 33MHz only.

  • How do I backup my HDD in dual hard drive configuration (the other is an SSD)?

I have 2 hard drives in my Macbook Pro 15" early 2011. I think people are becoming more familiar with this arrangement: the boot drive is the SSD located in the original hard drive bay and my old 500 GB hard drive is in a data doubler in the optical bay.
I'm trying to replace the 500 gig drive with 1TB drive i bought today. Any ideas how to clone the old 500 gig onto the new one?
    Thanks

download and install carbon copy cloner - free - and use it to do the clone.
you'll need a USB external enclosure - around $10 - install your new drive there and proceed with the clone.

  • System Prefs in OS X with SSD Boot Drive

I tried an OWC SSD last fall as the boot drive in my Quad-Core Mac Pro and liked the speed but had issues with wake from sleep or booting.
I use a UPEK fingerprint scanner for the admin PW and sometimes the unit would boot to the login dialog box without either a PW window or fingerprint prompt. Never did it before and didn't after I returned the HDD to boot disk status. It also would occasionally have problems waking from sleep when booted on the SSD.
    My question is this:
How should I configure the energy savings, sleep and other settings when using an SSD. Obviously it the drive had issues in the Mac Pro, however it worked perfectly on my 13" Al Unibody MacBook.

    OWC has firmware update.
SSDs don't spin up/down and yet there are and have been issues with sleep.
Even laptops with their sudden motion sensor feature have had trouble with SSDs as well.

by looking at the specs the laptop is better but if your not a gamer or graphics designer  then you most likly wont notice a difference in the performance at all so with that said a few downsides
the processor is i5 the i7 processor is the better processor the graphics card has half the dedicated memory that the laptop has and the hdd compared to the solid state is not much of a difference unless you wanna move your computer all the time you wont need a solid state drive
but like i said before if your not a gamer or graphics designer on your computer you will not notice the difference most likely

  • What is the ideal RAID 5 logical drive configuration to use with editing 1080p on FCPX?

    Hello,
I invested in one of the new Late 2013 Mac Pros (8-core 3GHz, dual Fire Pro D500 w/ 3GM VRAM each, 32GB RAM), along with a Promise Pegasus R6 Thunderbolt (ver 1) RAID because I wanted a fast and supremely smooth editing experience versus slow, laggy, drop frame performance I had been experienceing in my previous Mac (a mid-2010 27" iMac 2.8 GHz Quad-Core, 16GB RAM, Radeon 5750 with 1GB VRAM) that had media stored on a single 3TB firewire drive.
The RAID came pre-configured with 6 x 1TB Toshiba drives giving me a Logical Drive that has 5TB capacity, 128kb stripe size, 512byte sector size, with Read Ahead/Write Back cache policy. I've also enabled "Forced Read Ahead" using terminal.
    THE PROBLEM:
Even with this super fast media storage that gives me about 600MB/sec data transfer rate, I'm still sometimes experiencing lag and stuttered playback from the timeline (In all fairness, the stuttering only happens for a few seconds then plays fine, but the lag can be frustrating when I'm trying to click through the timeline to check edits). The footage I work with is 1080p mov files from Canon DSLR that are transcoded to ProRes 422 and Proxy during import into FCPX. I never edit with camera-native formats, always with ProRes. I also always close all other applications, eventhough all the power boasted by the Mac Pro shouldn't have a problem with that. I've tested the video cards by playing multiple 1080p H.264 files at once and it played about 10 simultaneously without a hitch. I've also edited under a new user and still the issue remains. My conclusion is that the lag comes from the RAID. (I did a test project with having my library saved on the internal flash storage and editing improved dramatically with speed and responsiveness, which signals that my problem must lie with the RAID).
    THE QUESTION:
Is there a preferred or recommended stripe size and sector size that would cure my problem? Is it because it's RAID 5 even though I'm using 6 disks and getting tremendous sustained data xfer rates?
    OTHER RELATED INFO:
My FCPX import settings copies all files into the library and I have Optimized and Proxy checked. My projects are also saved in the same library so everything is contained in one place.
My projects are mostly 40 minute wedding videos 1080p at 23.98fps with lots of short video clips during montage segments, no more than 2 video tracks during the wedding the wedding ceremony.
I frequenly repair permissions on the internal boot drive. Sometimes trash FCPX preferences when performance gets ridiculous or other glitches happen, like audio refusing to play, or the timeline plays no video just audio.
Thank you! Any help or advice is appreciated!

    Hi,
Making our tablespace in different directory does not improve the performance. See, Basic thing does if you are lauching your text file from different directory
say Drives C , D and F respectively does your hit any performance (your OS is installed on Drive C). I don't thinnk you will getany boost up performance. See Basicaltl what is happening is that, try to launch you textpad and try to open the files from any there then you file will open immediately, if you ask me the reason behind that, you application is already loaded in the Memory to give the Service (same as ORACLE Instance). That's the difference.

  • Media/Disk cache, etc. setup for a desktop and laptop dual configuration

    Hi,
    (New User)
I have a desktop at home, and a laptop.  I split my time about 50/50 between the two.  I use it for AE, PP, PS mainly
    Desktop hard drive setup:
1 SSD (Currently, Windows 8 and Adobe CC installed)
2 - 1TB (7200rpm) drives (1 drive is where I put my project files (gets sync'd with google drive) and the other drive isn't being used at the moment)
    Laptop:
1TB Hard drvie (Of course, Win 8 and Adobe CC installed)  (And, the folder where I do my projects gets sync'd with google drive).
As you can see, because I split my time between a laptop and desktop, I need to be working with the most current files (which is why I sync them through google drive).
My question is (please remember I am new), where should I set up disk cache, media cache, and anything else so that it is effecient and more importantly so I can use either my laptop or desktop to work on the same files?
Again, I barely know what I am talking about here.  I really don't understand what media cache, disk cache, etc. is.  I am trying to learn but I want to get this setup first so I can start with the tutorials on lynda.com.
    Thanks,
    Chris

First you do not need disk cache for all projects. For some it may even get in the way. Second, put your disk cache wherever you would like. If you have a second drive that is fast, use that. If you have room on your SSD drive, use that.
If you get into trouble with a comp and previews are fouled up or things just don't look right, empty your disk cache. It's not a necessity for working with AE, it's just a convenience for some projects that may help you work a little faster.

  • Dual Drive (SSD) Macbook pro, Data Transfer from SSD to SSD Slow

    hello,
I have in my Macbook (early 2011 / 2.3 I5, 8gb ram) a new SSD (Samsung 1TB Evo 840) installed. The old still-functioning SSD (Crucial m4 512GB)  i built with an iFixit kit (Dual Drive)  in the Optical drive Bay.  The two SSD are working.
My problem is this: the data transfer between the plates (a copy Iphoto Library approx 252Gb) is very slow (252 gb approx 5hours).
Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem?

One of the bigger problems with migrating from PowerPC to Intel is not the operating system, but the chip. Migration Assistant has been known to fail for unknown reasons when moving between the Mac platforms. Instead, this user tip has been recommended to avoid such issues:

my MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 need to install SSD Dual Drive in the enclosure in the laptop, but without removing my optical drive? can one help me. and without cable sata to usb to use it external.

I only know of one 2 terabyte drive that will fit in a notebook - and it comes in an enclosure that you must disassemble to get to the drive -> http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FRHTSK4/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&coli d=110YIC0GU53A7&coliid=I38PEBUNYX6OUM&psc=1.
HGST does make a 1.5 terabyte drive that would work quite well in your machine - the Travelstar 5K1500.

Laptop hard drives have been standardized in recent years. So they will fit and are electrically compatible.
