Laptop - External Display

Hi all,
I'm trying to setup Arch so that when my laptop is docked it will display video on the attached DVI monitor.
My xorg.conf:    http://paste.pocoo.org/show/285243/
Thanks!

First try restarting X without an xorg.conf and see what `xrandr --query` lists, then you can move on from there to build up an xorg.conf.
Why do you have several device sections pointing to the same pci address? Afaict from what you want you need one device, one screen and several monitor sections. Maybe try following http://intellinuxgraphics.org/dualhead.html on how to configure a static dual monitor setup. By the sounds of it though you want to have it switch while X is running, then using xrandr along with either a hotkey, script/icon or an acpi event would be the way to go, as hokasch mentioned and linked to.

  • Yoga 3 pro cant stream video on external display or laptop

Saw a previous post on this, didnt seem like it was fixed.  Having real issues with hooking up to an external display, when the web browser (chrome) is extended to the external display, my internet lags hard...i cant even stream a vid on youtube.
I've disabled realtek (fixed cracking speakers) tried a completely new cord set up from micro hdmi to dvi...nothing works.  When i drag the browser window back to the laptop screen, it works fine.
Ok, 5 min follow up:  it seems im now having the similar issue with streaming video on my laptop screen....sound streams fine, the video seems to shake back and forth very quickly, runs, then shakes again...seems to only happen intermittenltly on the laptop...but display shows real lag and shake.

Have you tried changing the screen resolution on the Yoga to something lower than what it is set on? A 1080i screen has a resolution of 1,920 × 1,080, my Yoga 3 Pro has a default resolution of 3200 x 1800. I have not tried connecting my Y3P to the TV yet, but the conversion could be causing an issue.

  • Laptop Built In Display and External Display not Working

Hi all, I have a HP Envy M6-1158ca, and recently my Built-in display stopped working. I plugged it into an external display via HDMI and it showed no input. It seems as though the laptop is not booting into Windows either, as usually whenever my laptop boots into windows, the fingerprint scanner blinks letting me know I can now sign in using it. I am extremly frustrated with this, and have an unbelieveable amount of stress because this was my only PC. Please respond as soon as possible, it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Yes.. i think thats what might have damaged it...Notebook should always be completely powered off with the battery out and ac adapter disconnected while  replacing any internal hardware..
Shouldnt be a BIOS problem....but still you can check this link..

    Note:
If you have HP Support Assistant installed on the computer(The Blue Question Mark) then open it ==> Complete all pending Updates & Tuneups==> Restart and Check. It may solve your problem

  • Helix - Two external displays + laptop display

I would like to extend my desktop to two external displays (1080p) in addition to the Helix screen. Of course, we only have one mini-displayport on the Helix. I don't have displayport-enabled monitors which can daisy-chain. Which of these options would you guys recommend?
    1. Using the Lenovo or Startech Displayport Splitter, which will make the two external displays look like one giant display to the computer.
    2. Using wi-di for one monitor while using the physical mini-displayport for the other. Will this work? If so, any recommendations for a a wi-di adapter for a monitor?
I don't want to use a USB dock / monitor extension, since I don't want to be using CPU power to drive the displays. Are there any other options I am missing? If it matters, the internal display of the Helix uses a displayport-type adapter.
    Thanks!

Trying to figure out how many displays that the Thinkpad Helix can drive via the GPU (independent extended mode, meaning each display is NOT a mirror/clone of another)
Tried to look at the manual/search, can't find it.
I'm sure you can do at least 2 connected displays, like any laptop sold within the past 10 years
    1) internal display (1080p)
    2) via Minidisplayport  (1440p-1660p?)
    How about 3 displays
    3) via WiDi?
    4) via Displayport chaining?
How about max resolutions? (all my displays are below 1080/1200p for now, but for future reference)
(not looking for the USB driven monitors, because
    1) a lot of them tend to be cpu-intensive instead of being driven by the GPU
    2) I want to be able to "dock" the helix with my existing large displays

  • External monitor works only works when laptop screen displays

Hi there, I just connected a different (newer, but not brand new) external monitor to my T61.  When I toggle screens (fn-f7) the external display gets no signal in the 'external display only' position, but displays beautifully in the 'both' position.  This never happened with my old monitor.  I would like to use the external display and not have the laptop screen display.  Any ideas? Many thanks, Ellen

  • Advice about using the laptop with closed lid while connected to external display

    Hello all HP forum members!
I have an ENVY 17 with Win8.1 64bit, a great laptop, but I need an advice about using it while connected via HDMI cable to an external display (TV).
When I play heavy 3D games, the computer produces more heat than usual (of course this is normal), but doing so with closed lid, could this harm the  display in some way, as a result of the heat?
    Thanks!

    Hi @VVel ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. It is a great site for information and questions. I have looked into your issue about your HP ENVY 17 Notebook and issue with keeping the Notebook on while closing the lid. Here is a document on changing the Power option.
Control Panel - Power Options - upper left - Choose what closing the lid does.
Change Plan Settings and also check Advanced Settings. Make sure you do this for both battery and power.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • How to revert back from external display mode to laptop display mode?

Hi, I'm new to this community. I'm not sure if this is where I should be posting my questions. Anyway, I accidentally pressed fn + f2, which switched my laptop into external display mode (I'm pretty sure), and the screen is now very narrow and small. I can't figure out how to switch it back to the laptop display mode. I tried fn + f3, which didn't do anything. I also tried the windows button + p, which wasn't the solution either (I was able to extend my desktop screen, but when I play my Steam games the screen is still very narrow and small). I'm very frustrated because I can't find any answers online. So any information would likely be helpful. Thanks in advance.
    OS: Windows 8

    Hi BorderingOnChaos,
Fn + F2 is a toggle. You press it again to switch back. If it doesn't work, then something is wrong with your notebook's SCM (system control manager) software or EC (embedded controller) firmware.
In the future, please do two things:
1 - Identify your notebook because the answer may vary depending on model.
2 - This question does not relate to the SteelSeries Engine. The correct place to ask it would be the general "Gaming Notebooks" forum if your MSI notebook is a gaming model. This "SteelSeries Engine" forum is a sub-forum under the "Gaming Notebooks" forum for the purpose of dealing with questions about it---but almost everybody new misses that. The SteelSeries Engine is used to configure keyboard macros and backlighting in MSI gaming notebooks that contain a SteelSeries keyboard as well as accessory devices from SteelSeries like gaming mice and USB headsets.
    Kind regards, David

  • Deactivate laptop screen with external display attached

    Hi guys,
Once upon a time when you connected a powersource, peripherals and external monitor to your MacBook (Pro/Air) you could then open the laptop to allow for better cooling (useful) without activating the laptop's built-in display thus staying in single-screen mode.
However, since Lion you can't. Whichever way you try, fly, walk on your hands or smash your head into a wall Lion will always always activate the laptop's display when you open it up.
Anyone got a Clu how to get the old behaviour back?

    1. Potential solution: Apple wants your forum feedback
Please see a post in the following thread and reply to it as you wish. Apple has now reportedly requested that we provide evidence in support of our desire to have the "open lid with screen off" option reinstated (eg significance of operating temperature differences, reduction in wifi reception, etc). They may then address our concerns with a Lion update.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3190417?start=60&tstart=0
    2. The madness of magnets
This is getting very worrying. It's madness that Apple owners feel obliged to experiment with passing magnets over the top of their premium-priced computers and sticking them on here, there and everywhere in the hope of finding short-term workarounds. The sooner this problem is fixed at source (ie within Lion), the better.

  • Laptops forgetting startup disk after using external displays

    Hi All,
Wonder if anyone has had a similar experience or any ideas.
I'm administering approx 650 laptops in an educational environment which were imaged with deploy studio in the summer and we've got a weird quirk going on: Sometimes when students or teachers use an external display that causes their screen resolution to change, the next time they restart their laptop it will not boot up. I can't recreate this at will but it is happening on a semi-regular basis. On the older white macbooks the laptop will display the boot logo but never show the little spinner than indicates that the start-up is progressing. On some of the newer macbooks, the screen changes to some colored lines. In either case, the solution is simply to option-boot the laptop, and manually select the boot drive. After logging in, manually switching the screen resolution once will cause the laptop to boot normally next time. It's an easy workaround but we use an EFI password so right now the tech desk has to handle this. We see the problem on 10.6.4, 10.6.5, and 10.6.6
I had read that settings for both the start-up disk and screen resolution are present in the nvram, so I'm wondering if I'm seeing a situation where connecting an external display is resulting in some corruption of this.
Looking through the logs I'm not seeing anything that looks out of place. Is there a specific section of the logs that anyone would recommend a more in depth look at, and if so what is the command to make that log as verbose as possible temporarily?
It's definately a quirk in the image or the imaging process so it's not worrying long term, but it'd be great if we could patch it for the remainder of the current school year.
Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Time Machine does a pseudo-archival backup.
It will until space prohibits it:
    1. Backup every hour
    2. Backup every day
    3. Backup every week
    4. Backup every month.
When space prohibits it, it will drop the oldest of each of 1,2,3,4 in sequence to make room for additional backups.
If you stop your Time Machine backing up, and only backup your existing Time Machine archive folders to DVD, or another external hard drive, you can keep older backups of data off your Time Machine backup drive, while giving it room to make more backups. If you clone your data*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Then you can be sure what's on the original is on the destination drive, and keep that as your backup.
Design your backup system to suit your needs. And note, Mac OS X does have an arbitrary 85% full point where it starts to break down and get slower, and have other issues*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/diskfull.html
If you find you reach that point a lot, you may want to increase the size of your internal drive.

  • When MagSafe unplugged, the external display and laptop need to be restart

Whenever I unplug my MagSafe when using dual-monitors, my MacBook and External monitor need to turned off/restarted. Why is this?

So, you're saying that when you disconnect the power cord (MagSafe) BOTH of your displays either go completely dark while the MacBook is still running or freeze (static image, nothing gets updated) or begin to display distorted video. Then when the displays enter one of these states they remain dysfunctional until you power cycle each one (which would mean that for the MacBook's display you'd have to restart the MacBook). Otherwise, are you suggesting that your MacBook crashes when you disconnect the MagSafe? Also, do you have to reconnect the MagSafe before you can restart the displays (if this is the case, then are you sure that your battery just isn't "dead")?
What type of connector are you using for the external display? Is it Mini DisplayPort, DVI, or VGA? If DVI, is it dual-link?
In any case, without additional details I'd guess that you have a grounding problem between your external display and the MacBook. This shouldn't happen unless there is a problem with your video cables or adapters or with the ports on either the MacBook or your external display. Have you tried connecting the 3.5mm audio output on your MacBook to an audio input on the external display (as a test to provide another grounding path)? Also, is your MacBook power supply plugged into the same AC outlet as is your external display?
I guess the MagSafe connector could also be at fault if it is shorting to ground when you remove it from the port on the MacBook. What happens if you disconnect the power supply directly from the AC plug and then disconnect the MagSafe?
Lastly, is there any chance that you are getting a static electric discharge when you touch the MacBook to remove the MagSafe connector?

  • Mid 2010 15" MBP becomes unresponsive with black screen while plugged into external display?

I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro, which is 15" and has the 2.66GHZ i7 processor configuration.
Had it for almost a year: No problems
Until about a month ago, laptop began becoming slow to boot, crashing. checked the harddisks, were corrupted and it needed a complete re-install of Snow Leopard. Did this and it seems to be ok ALTHOUGH:
I recently purchased a TEAC LCD TV which i have been using as an external display for my macbook, but have found that while the LCD TV is plugged in and i am using a dual-screen setup my computer and BOTH displays will quite often go black, and macbook will become completely unresponive
This sometimes happens apparantly randomly, but mostly happens when i have been using the external display for a while (30mins+) and use the "Display all Windows" feature of OSX.
I am connecting the macbook to the LCD TV with an Apple Mini-DisplayPort to DVD-D adaptor, which is then plugged into a DVD-D to HDMI adaptor
(As TV has no DVD-D input and i didnt (at the time) want to spend $50 on a Mini-DisplayPort to HDMI adaptor) Could this multiple line of adaptors be causing a problem? surely it wouldnt cause the macbook to die...
Can anybody help me? i have looked all over the internet for anyone with a similar problem with no avail.

UPDATE: This has happened to my macbook again while not plugged into my external monitor and with nothing else plugged in to it expect a USB mouse.

Based on this post, I picked up a Ground-Loop Isolator ($17 at my local Radio Shack), connected it, and (so far) it's working perfectly. Dead silence.

  • External display via Mini DisplayPort to DVI no longer works with MacBook.

I had not used my external monitor in the last several weeks. I believe there have been a few OSX Lion updates since the last time I used the external monitor. I had installed all the updates prior to connecting my external monitor again. However, a few days ago I tried to connect the external monitor and all I get is a "No Signal" message on my external monitor. The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI works on my LCD TV, so I know  the MDP works. I have also replaced the MDP-to-DVI cord and the external display still doesn't work.
I connected the external monitor to another computer running Snow Leopard and the external monitor works. So, the external monitor does work.
I have seen a few posts aboout this, but nobody seems to have a solution that works or is directly on point to my issue. I have tried to use all the scenarios for plugging in the external monitor and external monitor power. I tried to reboot the laptop with and withoout the external monitor connected. Same thing with the exteernal monitor plugged in and no power, etc. Nothing works. I have tried to repeatedly turn the external monitor on and off while connected to the MacBook. Again, that doesn't work.
So, I am open to any help someone may have. Here is what I am running:
    MacBook, Aluminum 13" Late 2008
    OSX 10.7.3
    NVIDIA GeForce 9400M

While we all have MacBooks in this forum most of us don’t run Lion. There's a Lion Support Community where everybody has Lion. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. Lion seems to have problems with external monitors.  https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion

  • How to restore display on MacBook Pro to original settings after faulty external display connection

Rookie question, 2009 MacBook Pro.  We bought a dvi-VGA adapter to connect to an external display. Got a picture on the external monitor but very poor resolution.  Meanwhile the display on the MacBook Pro re-set itself and we were not able to restore it to normal even after we disconnected the external monitor.  We now have our MacBook Pro with messed up resolution and display, AND no external display.  How do we get the MacBook Pro back to its default display settings?  Any help greatly appreciated!

Re: MacBook doesn't sleep when closing lid with external monitor attached with Lion     Oct 14, 2011 7:01 PM    (in response to admgtz)
I would like to offer this solution.  I have a MacBook Pro with an external monitor, and, for a year and a half both displays slept when I closed the MBPS.  This behavior stopped when I installed Lion.  They would sleep when I removed the power cord, but what a pain that would be.  The command "pmset -g assertions" gave no indication of which process ought be preventing sleep.
I contacted Apple support, and after some searching, the guy working with me found this thread, which was flagged as an Apple-approved solution:

Correct AnswerRe: How do I tell Lion to disable the LCD screen even when the lid is open?
    Aug 31, 2011 9:56 AM (in response to Bob_viking)
Here's the command to make your laptop behave like it did Pre-Lion (courtesy of my friend):
    sudo nvram boot-args="iog=0x0"
Works perfectly for me. If it screws up your system, just zap the PRAM next boot (cmd-opt-p-r) and you'll be back to the default Lion state. Or if you can still get into terminal, this command will get you back to Lion's default state as well:
    sudo nvram -d boot-args
    Enjoy!
One snag was that I had to run it with the external monitor disabled, but it worked great!
