Laptop Fan Noise

Hi, whenever i turn on my laptop, there's this buzzing noise coming from the cpu fan. i sent it to a repair shop to clean the fan, but the problem still exists. i suspect it's more of a hardware issue than the fan, and if so, where can i get a replacement fan for my laptop? Have been using this laptop for about 1/1.5 years now, problem appeared recently.
HP Pavillion dv6000

I would suggest you to do a BIOS update for the unit, and then follow the instructions mentioned in the following links:

  • Loud fan noise while gaming on GT70 gaming laptop

I've loved my laptop ever since I bought it but there seems to be one problem with the fan possibly.
The fan noise is really audible and it gets annoying when I'm gaming. Games like Fable Anniversary (highest setting) forces the fan to be turned on and make loud noises that even wearing a headset wouldn't help avoid. You know how new MSI laptops have a button for turning on cooler boost 2? It feels like it gets turned on by itself while playing some, if not most games.
I would first like to know if this is normal for a gaming laptop. Its REALLY annoying, I even tried the GT70 Fan control 1.63 but the fan keeps turning on by itself. I understand that the GTX 870m gets heated fast and therefore needs to cool off, but like on almost every game.....Skyrim, Tera (not even that demanding.....and not even on max setting ....) long hours of playing league of legends, The Last Remant..etc. I wanna play without such loud fan noises  I don't mind if its audible but not too loud, I can even hear the fan noise from upstairs if I leave my room door opened. I would really enjoy playing Tera and Archeage without such irritating, loud sound that really distracts me and makes me fear that its abnormal. Hell, even Rift (MMORPG) released in 2011, would turn on turbo fan.... =(. Any help is greatly appreciated.

There isn't much you can do with the tool but better than nothing.
It didn't fix the fan problem =/
I'm not the only one with such problem, https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=256673.0 look at the 2nd video and just listen to how loud the fan noise is. (Yes different models but same crap)
The silent option doesn't fully stop/slowdown the fan,  maybe just momentarily then once you open up the game, the fan goes back to its usual 3k RPM. Is there ANY way to stop this? its been happening ever since I bought it and it really makes me not wanna play simply because of the noise that is audible even through wearing a headset. Let alone not wearing a headset....
Sad it happens even when playing fifa 15. I mean is fifa 15 even THAT demanding? the answer is no, not even close to demanding as its using the same engine as 13, 14 ..etc. Also, I played it on my old lenovo laptop that had WAY lower specs such as gt 650m graphics card and yet the fan was extremely quiet, and I might add it was on highest setting....
I understand that the gpu can get heated fast, but on almost EVERY game? at first I thought the fan will only make such noises when playing highly demanding games such as Skyrim. A game from 4 years ago without any frkin mods. or Fable Anniversary..OR Prison Break: Conspiracy (what the f?) but it turns out that the fan will go turbo mode on literally every game. so in conclusion, every game is suddenly demanding thus the Cooler Booster 2 will automatically turn on.

  • Fan noise on Macbook pro retina 15 on low speed!

Hi guys, I'm experiencing a constant low background noise from the left fan (as I'm looking at the screen). The noise is audible always even when the fans are working in their lowest speed possible the noise is there. It seems to me that that is a mechanical failure of the fan itself. It's like something is touching at the fan. When I'm slightly moving my laptop the noise is exaggerated seems like the rotor is going out of place and touching the surrounding structures. I bought the laptop on December and I didn't use it too much. I'm having a similar problem with my older MacBook Pro but the noise from the fans occurs only when I'm moving the laptop vertically and after five years off continues usage. It's anyone having a similar problem? Any advice? Should I replace the fan? Or should I take it to an authorized service?
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)
    2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB
    Thank you in advance

If it is under warranty, by all means take it in for service.  If there is a mechanical deficiency, it should be repaired gratis.  It does sound like an internal fan problem that needs to be replaced.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook pro- OSX lion 10.7.2 fan noise

I just bought a macbook pro laptop, upgraded it to the Lion version, it is now 10.7.2, with processor of 2.7 GHz intel core i7, memory of 8GB, 1333 MHz DDR3. Whenever I am on a program like imovie, safari, iphoto, charging my smartpen...etc.... the fans goes off like crazy. It lasts for a very long time. Sometimes the noise get so bad, it goes from loud to louder...... I don't know what the problem is.
I am a new mac user, I have no idea how to install, delete, clean softwares. Please help?? Thank You ...

Thanks a lot for replying, but what exactly does the istat widget program do?
Also, the fan noise seems like a normal noise every time I launch a program, but it's getting to the point where I am frustrated(annoyed) of the fan noise. I would've thought that upgrading to a Mac book would cause less fan noise because of it's high processor. Sometimes I feel like I should go back to a Dell or HP because of this problem, but at the same time, I love my laptop. ;)

  • Vaio E series - Cooling Fan noise

Hello, 2 weeks ago I bought Vaio E series.  I was very excited that I will have Vaio laptop. It was like my dream wish. According to our standard, we are poor country and the Vaio laptops are extremely expensive. But, Vaio laptops are know for high quallity laptops and great support from Sony. So, I bought it. I am very satisfied with the quality. But I have one problem. The cooling fan is making a lot of noise even the CPU usage its 10 %. I have the latest BIOS version. So, Sony I am expecting from you to release a new BIOS update fixing this issue.. I dont want to start thinking that I pay a lot of money only for the name. With that money I could buy a more powerful machine but I put my trust in Sony. The model number is Model # SVE17122CXB. PS. Don't say that I should go to service center because they can do nothing. I am an IT student and I know how this stuff works. And I dont  want the fact that the new laptop will be repaired. So the only solution is BIOS update. Sony, do not make me regret that I have chosen you before other brands.
I am expecting a positive feedback.

    t0n1,
Engineering came back saying that fan speed control is not supported on the SVE17 hardware so there is no way on this model to control the fan speed manually.  I apologize for suggesting this initially, at the time I did not have your exact model at my desk but instead I had a very similar one (SVE14A)
I also received two SVE17 notebooks and both have extremely quiet fan (especially if CPU usage is very low).  Loud fan noise is not a characteristic of this model.
If you feel that the fan on your SVE17 is abnormally loud, then you have two options at this point:
    1) You can make a audio/video recording of this fan noise and post it for me to review; after that i can try to give you more suggestions or let you know if this is in fact normal or not.  At this time you do not mention that your computer is shutting off, so the unit is not overheating.
    2) Or you can consider service.  (I realize you initially refused service in your original post, but sometimes some new thermal sheets or re-seating of the heat-sink can address these issues.

  • Extreme fan noise on Retina Macbook Pro "15 2012

My Macbook runs very loud without intensive apps open when I connect it to a Thunderbolt Display for over an hour. I have tested this to great length, it doesn't matter whether it's photoshop, microsoft word or google chrome that's running, it's the fact that it has to power an external display.
I have taken it to Apple Support, however they perform their cooling system tests in 18 degree airconditioning so it's impossible to demonstrate how loud it gets at normal room temperature.
I presented this problem twice within my warranty period, but Apple will simply do their test and deny any problem as the fans barely start up in the cold test environment. They did say that if my laptop overheats and becomes damaged, they will cover the damages because I made the complaint within the warranty period. Now my warranty has expried (I simply didn't have time to waste taking the computer to Apple again within the last two months).
Is there anything I can do to get my laptop fixed? I'm pretty sure the graphics card was faulty to begin with as it cannot take the load of a Thunderbolt Display over an extended period. There are so many documented cases of issues concerning fan noise and overheating with the 2012 rMBP, is Apple not going to do anything about it?!

High CPU usage will make the fans run faster (luder) you can try a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Follow directions for a battery that should not remove yourself. Also have the Apple tech make sure you do not have a bad temp sensor.

  • S10 fan noise

Hi, I just recently bought a Lenovo S10 and am loving the new system, but I can't seem to get over the unbearable fan noise.
Is there any way I can change the temperature at which the fan runs?  The fan is running even when I'm just browsing the web which is completely unnecessary because the computer's only around 40C which is still really cool, although maybe not for a netbook.  Normal laptop cpu's can handle up to 80-90C so I don't see why it would be necessary to keep the fan on when it's at such a low temperature.
This is just an issue for me because I want to bring this netbook to class without bugging everyone with the fan's constant noise. It would also help to increase the battery life of the system which would be nice since it only ships in 3 cell at the moment.

    I also have this problem.
In performance mode the fan stays on about 90% of the time, even when it is doing nothing at all (cpu 0-2%).
In balanced mode it stays on about 70% of the time and sometimes is on while doing nothing (cpu 0-2%).
When in the lower power modes it stays on while browsing the internet but if you do nothing it usually stays off.
It is not a loud buzzing noise it is just the fan staying on when it should not.. The laptop is very cool, hardly even warm to the touch, even when playing HD videos or other CPU intensive things.
I wonder if the new Bios update fixes this problem.
    Any help would be appreciated.
Edit: Maybe not so cool when playing HD videos (65-70c) but when using it normally it stays around 50-55c. I'm not sure what the fan is set to turn on at.

  • Fan noise (not moo or whine)

I have a new mbp, the second one, both whined. On this one while moving my laptop I can listen to the fan scratching against something. Should I worry about this and get it repaired now, I need my laptop a lot and I can't afford to be without it. By the way, it whines like **** and it's a 1,83ghz. I've seen 4 mbp 1,83 and they all whined. I've also seen a white macbook that didn't whine.
It's very difficult to me to get support and replace my laptop, no apple stores arround here. (Portugal).

It's very difficult to me to get support and replace my laptop, no apple stores arround here. (Portugal).
I know getting AppleCare support can be difficult in some countries. Does this list of Apple support numbers help at all? I know Portugal isn't listed, but perhaps one of the nearby countries...?
You don't need to be near a retail Apple Store to get warranty support, as long as you can contact AppleCare by phone.
On this one while moving my laptop I can listen to the fan scratching against something. Should I worry about this and get it repaired now...
It's not a good idea to move a running notebook Mac, although we all do it sometimes. Obviously they can moved a bit when in use without problem, such as when using in a moving bus, train, airplane, etc. But I've never had one that didn't make some ugly-sounding fan noises when moved abruptly. (The optical drive with a CD/DVD in it will also make horrible noises if picked up abruptly while in use. Not a good idea.)
In other words, unless the sound occurs when all you have done is lightly move the MBP, I wouldn't worry about it. Just don't jar the computer heavily when it's running. That's never a good idea.
If the sound does occur at the slightest movement of the computer, and it sounds like something is being damaged, then definitely call AppleCare if you can.
(Yes, we now have the sudden motion sensor, which should help in such a situation by protecting the hard drive. But that doesn't mean some damage can't still be caused by dropping or jarring the MBP. It's still best to avoid such things.)

  • T61 Fan noise- are you going to do something about this?

Let me say upfront that my warranty has expired 7 months ago.
Shortly after, I noticed that the fan noise became increasingly noisy.
This is happening to a ThinkPad? I've used a T42  for 2 years (work laptop) before this and I had no issues.
The reason I stayed loyal with this brand because of my hassle free experience with T42 (to think that I've abused that).
What are my options to get to a resolution?
This T61 fan defect is consistent. There are posted solutions in one thread but I couldn't follow it and I would like to see an endorsement by Lenovo tech support that this is safe to follow. Can't you just once and for all support a resolution?
Having said that I've forfeited benefits of a warranty cover. Is there anything I should specify to an independent repairman?
How much is the expected fees for this? Is this an issue of replacing a new fan? What fan model is available for
    replacement?

Maybe things will improve this summer,

  • G61 laptop fan on all the time

(Reposted because the model number was incorrect first time around)
    Hi,
Around a week after I bought it, I have noticed that the fan in my Windows 7 G61 laptop is very loud and constantly on, starting the moment the machine is turned on. I have heard that this can be changed in the BIOS by disabling "Fan Always On" but I am not happy to do this as I am worried that the system will overheat.
The fan noise is not due to dust accumulation as the laptop is brand new, and there is nothing blocking the vents. Furthermore, the fan is on even when the machine is stone cold with nothing but Windows running.
The problem appears to have only just made itself felt as I am sure I would have noticed it earlier.
    I have two questions:
    - Is it safe to disable "Fan Always On" in BIOS while running on battery or AC?
    - Is there any other way to keep the fan quieter?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi I'm also having this problem. Fan will stay on at full speed although cpu and harddrive stay relatively cool. The air getting blown out the vent is also cool indicating that its software and not the hardware since its brand new (under a month old). I have also checked for a bios update which there was one. I updated to it fine but still fan stays at full speed. I have tried turning off the bios option 'fan allways on' but then I find that the fan does not come on enough to cool the internals and gets slightly too hot for comfort. I now think its due to the fan algorithms in the bios being borked and that hp knew about this fault and were lazy and just stuck fan allways on option instead of properly optimizing and alternating the fan speeds. all left to do now is wait for hp to realize consumers are being affected by this and will release a proper bios update. Thanks. Matt

  • Brand new macbook pro has annoying fan noises all the time

I just picked up my macbook pro 13'' with retina display from apple store today, and the first time when I start it, it generates constant annoying noise!  no applications run, nothing, from the moment I push the power button, it just give the noises... very disappointed at macbook pro.... Restart it, same, still gives out constant fan noises.... Even the $300, $400 cheap laptops don't have such problem....

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Your Mac may be indexing files from the flash storage, and this may cause that your CPU usage is high. In this case, I recommend you to carry on using your Mac and fans will stop working at maximum speed soon.
Another thing you can try is to reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 The SMC is the part that manages fans speed, and if it is not working correctly, fans may not be working properly.
If the SMC reset does not work and fans carry on working at maximum speed for a long time, return your Mac and get another one.

  • No video, high fan noise on startup, for the THIRD TIME

For the third time in slightly less than three years, I have encountered the same crippling problem with my iBook G4 (1 GHz, June 2004 vintage). In essence, the screen will abruptly go black while in use (not screensaver) and no amount of keyboard/mouse activity will reactivate the display. If I power off by holding down the power button then restart, the screen stays black and the fans come on full speed.
Despite a bit of confusion on the details, this sounds like the problem described on the webpages below. In essence the Danish government has issued a finding that there is a design flaw which allows excessive logic board flexing, which in turn causes logic board failure.
This is, as I said above, the third time I have encountered this failure in less than three years. Worse, they seem to be coming closer together. The first was after about 1.5 years, the second 9 months later, and now seven months after the second repair. Since I didn't get Apple Care, paying for a third repair out of pocket would bring my repair bill up to the cost of a new iBook.
I do not abuse my iBook, and since the second repair I have been very careful with my iBook. Does anyone have any suggestions on getting Apple to acknowlege the problem or who I can appeal to? Apple's website doesn't seem to offer any e-mail tech support options and I'd rather not sit on hold for an age (again) if it can be avoided. While I don't want to abandon my iBook or Apple, I may be forced to if I can't rely on the hardware.
    Thanks

iBook G4 1GHz (early 2004)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   blank screen, high fan noise on start

Well it doesn't sound like the Danish power problem since it will start up.
The ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 4x AGP graphics processor chips in these iBooks have been problematic. Usually it's the reball problem and it can be reballed for ~ $78. I've done 4 this year and they work just great. A cheap way to get nice laptops. If they respond to the "shim fix" then reballing will work.
A more troubling problem is with the 9200 chip itself. My reballer says that this chip is in itself the cause of some of these problems. He knows it since it's also used in IBMs, Compaqs and many other laptops and he's seen a lot of failures. My only failed reball was a 9200. I have a line on a replacement board or finding the chip in a broken PC.

  • Hp dv3t 2000 overeheating/fan noise/cpu spikes

hi, i own a hp dv3t 2000 which is just about six months old. Since around a month ago I have been experiencing increasing fan noise and cpu spikes (100% cpu usage when really i'm not doing much at all)
i looked into this issue online and learned that it may be a airflow problem, so i wanted to take a look inside.
here's my frustration - i cannot take out the case because the screws are put in really tight and stripped, making it impossible to unscrew them. after 2 hours of intensive labor trying to unscrew my **bleep** laptop, i am so frustrated and angry that hp cannot bother to use a decent set of screws in their products.
i wonder if hp will take it in and have it fixed with the one year warranty on the product.

  • Thinkpad T60 fan noise

    Hello
I own a Lenovo Thinkpad T60 laptop. Lately fan of my laptop started making a whirling sound. Its been only 2 years since i have purchased the laptop and now i am running with this horrible fan noise.
I want to replace the fan with a new one. So i have checked the hardware manual of Lenovo and found out that at some point i have to apply thermal great at a location of fan assembly at the time of installation.
What thermal grease i have to use for this. If i buy the fan assembly at Lenovo, will they send me the thermal grease also.
Also do i need to buy the same fan model as the existing one... If it so, where can i find the fan model in my system..
    Your responses are greatly appreciated.....

    Hello,
the simpliest  method is to use your 3years warranty and send it to depot.
The other way is to do a parts look-up on Lenovo support page, see link on top of this page.
Then your get the FRU number, search for it at Google, also for thermal grease like Arctic Silver.
The fan isn´t very expensive may be 30$ and it´s not difficult to deploy it. But you will loose warranty!!
