Laptop Fan not increasing speed
I was having very bad heating problems with my pc it would tend to go off all the tkme when it overheated, i decided to blow into the fan and dust came out. It continued to work perfectly untill last night when it continued to overheat, I checked on the Internet and I found I just had to clean the fan so I opened up my laptop this morning and cleaned the fan. But now the fan will not speed up if the temperature is high before it would and make horrible noises, now the fan is on but does not changes its speed when the cpu is heating!I have tried alot of freeware that increases the fan speed but the fan cannot be detected, but the fan is still on and idle. I opened up the laptop 3 times to check if everything was connected and they are but what could be the issue?? Please help my laptop is my life at the moment.

It should be constantly turning not idling...and only speed up when the Laptop tells it to speed up to dissipate the heat from the heat sink as heat rises. If it isn't doing this then the fan is failing.

MBP 2006 fans not increasing speed relative to heat, normal AHT, manual SMC
Hello,
I have a MBP 17inch 2006 model. About 6 months ago I began getting lines across my display. I only recently discovered after some unexpected system shut downs and feeling the underside of the MBP that it was very hot. I installed istatmenus and found that despite temperatures of above 70 deg celcius my fans were still running at only 1000rpm. They don't increase above the minimum fan setting. Manually increasing the fans in SMC fan control works in cooling down the machine.
I ran an Apple Hardware Test using the original install DVD and holding down D on startup. No errors found on two runs. I assume it is a sensor problem, but should the AHT pick this up?
Thanks for any advice, it's not ideal to be having to adjust the fans manually all the time.
BenHi Ben,
We've seen plenty of posts here where AHT did ID bad sensors, but that's not to say it always does. It does sound like a sensor, but try an SMC Reset. If that doesn't work, and you're within a reasonable distance to an Apple Store, I'd make an appointment with the "genius" bar, otherwise, an AASP. -
I use a Dell Inspiron. Since the last couple of days my laptop gets heated up to 60 at no load and 80-90 while listening to music. I can't feel the air coming out of the fan vent which I could earlier.
I tried using i8kutils but it didn't work.
fancontrols says: Error: Can't read configuration file
whatever utility I try to use I can't get a read on the fans speed or check its functionality.
Please suggest some means to check it.
Regards,
Apoorv

This program will search your sensors for pulse width modulation (pwm)
controls, and test each one to see if it controls a fan on
your motherboard. Note that many motherboards do not have pwm
circuitry installed, even if your sensor chip supports pwm.
We will attempt to briefly stop each fan using the pwm controls.
The program will attempt to restore each fan to full speed

physically verify that the fans have been to full speed

IMac 21.5 hard drive fan increases speed after HDD Replacement
The hard drive on my iMac 21.5 failed two months out of warranty, so I decided to replace it myself. I replaced the drive with a duplicate of what was already in the iMac, which is a Seagate 500GB Barracuda 7200. The replacement and restore went well, however, now the hard drive fan slowly increases speed during operation, until I assume it reaches maximum RPMs. The increase in fan speed happens regardless of how busy the unit is. This is not particularly a problem, but the noise at maximum RPMs is annoying and I assume the life of the fan will be shortened. I ran the Apple Hardware Test and received the error "4SNS/1/40000000:TH00-9.000" which I've seen from another post that this may or may not indicate a problem with the thermal sender unit on the HDD. During installation I was careful to verify the proper orientation of the thermal sensor cable, so doubtful that is the problem. Is there a way to definitively determine whether the thermal sensor is bad on the HDD, or do I need some type of Apple-specific firmware installed on the HDD?
Beginning in late 2009 Apple began using HD's that had the heat sensor integrated into it, if you are absolutely positive your replacement drive has an integrated sensor in it then your problem might be solved by doing a SMC reset. If you haven't done one before here are the instructions:
SMC RESET
• Shut down the computer.
• Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
• Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
• Release the power button.
• Attach the computers power cable.
• Press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
• Shut down the computer.
• Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
• Turn on the computer.
• Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys. -
MB990 and SL - Fan speed is not increasing automatically
Hi Guys,
Two days ago I changed my macbook's hard drive to a bigger one and did a fresh install of Snow Leopard.
As soon as I installed the SL I noticed my computer was running hotter than the previous installation. Without doing anything, my macbook is reaching 75C (167F).. I have already checked the activity monitor and no process is using the CPU. Now I realized that the fan speed is not increasing automatically, it is always fixed at 2000rpm even if the temperature reaches 72C.. I have already tried a SMC reset but the problem persists..
Does anyone know a solution for this? The problem is the fan speed that is not increasing..
I'm having to use smcFanControl to control de fan speed manually. Before the fresh install I was using Snow Leopard updated from the Leopard and I was not facing this problem.
Thanks a lot!Hi there... i have the same problem. my temperature gets up to 75C with just one window open in safari or google chrome. I have downloaded smc Fancontrol but ...its not enough. have u solved this problem yet? i'm going in to the Genius Bar tomorrow to see if they can help.

CPU heats up on file copy/backup and fan speed does not increase
Hi Friends,
I have been having issues with fan in my Dell Studio 1555. It has an ATI Radeon card and I had installed the proprietary catalyst driver as the open source driver is too noisy.
Recently, I noticed that on accessing my hard disk and copy files or running backup (luckybackup), the temperature shoots up from around 60 deg C (just using chrome) to 100 deg C when it would shut down itself. However, it seems like the fan speed does not increase with the increase in temperature to help it cool down.
I tried to get the fan speed details with "lm-sensors" but it would not show the fan speed. Here is the output of sensors:
[user@domain]$ sensors
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +60.0°C (crit = +100.0°C)
temp2: +59.0°C (crit = +100.0°C)
temp3: +66.0°C (crit = +100.0°C)
coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0: +58.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 1: +58.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Following the Arch wiki, I added acpi_enforce_resources=lax to kernel parameters but it did not help as well.
Here is the main problem:
1. CPU temperature shoots on accessing hard drive but fan speed does not increase - Any guide/direction to investigate would be really helpful.
2. Sensors does not show the fan speed. Read about i8kutils, but couldn't figure out how to get it working with systemd. Any indicators here?

HP-HP, the fan of the laptop is not functioning properly
Product name:HP-HP
Windows 7
Operating system : 64 bit operating system, RAM (4.00 GB)
I encountered the problem this morning. When i boot on my laptop there was an error message showing that the fan of my laptop is not functioning well and therefore i should visit this site for support. Thank you.Hello duckzilla2009, welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you have a message on your notebook about the fan not working correctly. I will try to help you with this.
If you could, please provide the Model and Product numbers for your notebook.
Here are a few documents that may be able to help you with resolve the error message related to your fan.
System Fan (90b) error message on startup - if you're getting that specific message follow this document.
Error: CPU Fan Failed - follow this one for any other fan error message or if the above didn't correct the issue.
Reducing Heat Inside the PC to Prevent Overheating - I'm providing this document, as steps involved could help you with the fan. If the notebook is overheating it would be putting a lot of stress on the fan.
Start with that and let me know how things go.

My laptop fan speed is always going so high...
Hello there.
My laptop fan speed is always running so loud most of the time when I don't even have many programs running. How can I control the fan speed?Yes, you can:

However, I'd look at the root cause also. See what processes are running and see if any are hogging the processor -
Mac Pro will not boot, revs fans at full speed
Hi,
I had my Mac Pro (2006 3.0 quad core) asleep, it woke itself up and didn't display video, instead revved the fans at full speed and did nothing, so I shut it down using the power button. When I turned it on, it did/does the same thing, no chime, no video to the displays, and I cant boot in safe mode or any other way, it wont even eject the DVD drive if I hold the mouse down.
has anyone encountered this before?
Any ideas?Give the SMC button a kick, hold it in for 5-10 seconds. Hard to see, but hidden by drive #4.
Or try zapping PRAM/NVRAM first and see if that helps.

Spinning beach ball of death after crash with fans running full speed
I recently put my machine to sleep - came in the next morning to find it running all fans at full speed and frozen. Did a hard reset (power button in for 5 seconds waited 15 secs and then power on. It rebooted after a long re-boot period. Since then it has slowed down. Many apps take an age to open. Many freeze and there is the infamous SBoD. I have rebuilt permissions, installed 10.5.8 combo, done a permission repair from a separate firewire disk, run onyx - which at time never ends and has to be aborted. Activity monitor shows no exceptional activity when the SBoD is running. I had significant issues until last December when i did a clean rebuild and installation of leopard and put all essential software in from clean install disks - all in all had a pristine machine which was working perfectly until the week before last when the full fan and freeze crash occurred. I notice that it speeded up after the 10.5.8 combo install and permission rebuild from external disk but gradually slows down and gets increasingly unstable requiring forced reboots more and more often. I have no hacks or other background processes other than Virus Barrier 6 which ran perfectly before the crash.
As expected after running well at about 11:40 Mail slowed down and the SBoD started.

Hello everyone! I installed Arch on my EeePC 901 and everything seems to run smoothly, until I noticed that the fan is not working. I did a little search on the forums, to check if someone already had to face something similar but with no success.

Laptop Fan Lenovo IdeaPad Y500
Hi,
I' trying to control the laptop fan on a Lenovo Y500.
I followed the wiki article on fancontrol and also tryied tp-fand, but both dont seem to find any fans.
My laptop is never going into full fan speed, one of the fans isn't working at all I think.
I made a stress test with arch and windows and compared the results.
Are there any other options I can try?

Satego X200 hangs about for one second if the fan changes the speed
Hello people,
my laptop hangs about for one second if the fan changes his speed. This does not happen so often and only since a short time.
Excuses me for my English.
Thank you in advanceFirst thank you for your responses.
Yes, notebook hangs for 1-3 seconds. I notice this because the mouse pointer does not move in this time. And if I hear music, only monotonous sound comes out. If the processor is busy, something like that does not happen. Only if he is idle. It is astonishing that notebook hangs if the fan goes on. I cannot ascertain, with the turning on which fan this passes.

Is this CPU fan or graphics card fan?
Yours sincerely -
the laptop fan makes sound when i play games on my laptop...what could be the problem?
Then install iStat Menus 4.04 so you can provide us with some temperature and fan speed data.
What about before you start the game? After you start the game do this:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
If it's the game causing the problem then either something is wrong with the game or it's not compatible with Lion.
