Laptop for editing HDV and dlsr footage... Cs5.5

H. I'm thinking of purchasing this laptop. What do you think?
Alienware M14V560122AU
Intel i7-2670 2.20GHZ with turbo up to 3.10GHz Processor
8gb ram
3gb NVIDIA GEFORCE GT 555M
750gb hdd
Windows 7 home premium
It doesn't have esata port. Only usb3. Do you think it will be fast to enough to export sequence to mpeg DVD? From HDV footage?

Here is a new next generation laptop but not yet priced HP DV7-7000 unit with a Ivy Bridge processor and Kepler graphics that has two internal drives that could be of interest to Premiere Pro users.  It was on the HP web site yesterday but today it is missing, here is a blog link.  Apparently they will not be shipping until June

    Eric,
I am shocked by the new GTX 880M, the unit has the same cores as the GTX 780M (1536) but the other critical specification for MPE acceleration memory bandwidth is screwy.  The old GTX 680M has a memory bandwidth of 160 GB /second while the new high end GTX 880M has only 64 GB/second.  What gives????
The new ASUS G750JZ has the GTX 880M

  • Laptop for editing with Adobe Premiere & After Effects CS6

Hi, I'm just started a company working with young people, and I need a laptop for editing some videos (short films/music videos).
I was looking at a cheap laptop to be able to run Adobe Premiere and After Effects smoothly. I was told that this laptop would run smoothly:
    http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/hp-envy-m6-1178sa-15-6-laptop-17419990-pdt.html
Can anyone confirm this? The graphics card is not listed on the Adobe's website but I was told it's compatible?
Im new to this stuff so please help, thank you.

How realistic are the system requirements Adobe posts on their site?
    System requirements
    Windows
Intel® Pentium® 4 or AMD Athlon® 64 processor with 64-bit support; Intel Core®2 Duo or AMD Phenom® II processor required for Adobe® Premiere® Pro, After Effects®, and Encore®; Intel Core i7 processor required for Adobe SpeedGrade™
Microsoft® Windows® 7 with Service Pack 1 (64 bit) and Windows® 8. Refer to the CS6 FAQ for more information about Windows 8 support.*
2GB of RAM (4GB recommended) for 32 bit; 4GB of RAM (8GB recommended) for 64 bit
14.5GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on removable flash storage devices)
Additional disk space required for disk cache, preview files, and other working files (10GB recommended)
1280x900 display with 16-bit color and 512MB of VRAM; 1680x1050 display required, and second professionally calibrated viewing display recommended for SpeedGrade
    OpenGL 2.0–capable system
Sound card compatible with ASIO protocol or Microsoft WDM/MME
DVD-ROM drive compatible with dual-layer DVDs (DVD+-R burner for burning DVDs; Blu-ray burner for creating Blu-ray Disc media)
    Java™ Runtime Environment 1.6 (included)
Eclipse™ 3.7 (for plug-in installation of Adobe Flash® Builder®); the following distributions are supported: Eclipse IDE for Java EE and Java Developers, Eclipse Classic, Eclipse for PHP Developers
QuickTime 7.6.6 software required for QuickTime features, multimedia, and HTML5 media playback
Dedicated GPU card required for SpeedGrade (for optimal performance in SpeedGrade and for GPU-accelerated features in Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects: NVIDIA Quadro 4000, 5000, or 6000 or other Adobe-certified GPU card with at least 1GB of VRAM recommended); visit www.adobe.com/products/premiere/extend.html for supported cards
Optional: Tangent CP200 family or Tangent Wave control surface for SpeedGrade
Optional: For SDI output, NVIDIA Quadro SDI Output card required for SpeedGrade
Optional: 7200 RPM hard drive (multiple fast disk drives, preferably RAID 0 configured, recommended) for video products
This software will not operate without activation. Broadband Internet connection and registration are required for software activation, validation of subscriptions, and access to online services.† Phone activation is not available.
You have to be from another world to believe these requirements. Note the last optional statement. Up to and including CS4 this stated:
Dedicated 7200 RPM hard drive (multiple fast disk drives, preferably RAID 0 configured) for video products.
Nobody in his right mind believes that system requirements get lower over time. It is purely a marketing lie to artificially lure prospective buyers.
The requirement to have two physical disks for CS6 is bogus.
If anything is bogus, it is the system requirements from Adobe and only fools would try to use a system with these minimum requirements, like this:
Pentium 4 with 4 GB of RAM, 24.5 GB of hard disk space is enough according to them.
Harm is confusing editing with getting high PPBM scores, I am afraid - again.  Not all projects have 10 layers of H.264 stacked with heavy effects for two hours straight.  The vast majority of editing is simple transitions and effects with 10 minutes of YouTube encoding twice a week.
Wrong assumption. I was thinking of a simple DV timeline with one single track. And however much you dislike the PPBM benchmark, it is the only available tool to show how well a system is setup and in balance. Question: Is your dislike of the benchmark based on the fact that your favorite HP Z820 does not do well?

While you're in itunes, with the leftside window open, click on Apps. Then, look across the top middle of your itunes screen. You will see several choices: All, Iphone/iPad Touch, Ipad, Ipod Games, List, and Updates.
Clicking on each of these gives you a different view.
When you select ALL you will see all of your apps. When you select Updates you sill see only the apps that need to be updated. When you are in Updates you will see the Update button in the lower right corner.
    Hope this helps.

  • Laptop for adobe illustrator and photoshop

We are getting a new laptop for my daughter and a subscription to the Adobe Creative Cloud.  She is interested in graphic design and mostly uses photoshop and illustrator.  She has already sold several ebook covers and some other design projects.  We are looking at laptops with an i7 processor and a SATA drive.  We are unsure where to put our money - faster processor, more RAM, SATA vs optical drive, dedicated graphics card - for optimum performance. What do we really need?  dedicated graphics cards seem to cost about $200-300 more.  My IT friend says the SATA drive will make the biggest difference in speed....
    HELP!!!
Here is two we are looking at .  Would these perform well for creative cloud and last several years?  Which would be better?  Thanks for your advice.
Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Series Touchscreen Laptop | Intel Core i7 | Backlit Keyboard
    8GB DDR3L 1600MHz RA
Intel Core i7-4510U Processor at 2.0GHz
    8GB DDR3L 1600MHz RA
    1TB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    Microsoft® Windows 8.1 (64-bit)
15.6" Touchscreen Truelife HD LED Backlit (1366 x 768) Display
    Integrated Graphics
HP ENVY 15t Touchscreen Laptop | Intel Core i7
    4th generation Intel® Core™ i7-4710HQ Processor (2.5GHz)
    16GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    1TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
    SuperMulti DVD Burner
    Microsoft® Windows 8.1 (64-bit)
    802.11b/g/n WLAN
HP TrueVision HD Webcam with Integrated Digital Microphone
    15.6-inch diagonal Touchscreen HD LED-backlit Display (1366x768)
    Intel HD Graphics 4600

    What is you actual budget?
If you are wanting a machine that is going to run well for a number of years and keep up with the ever developing Adobe Creative Cloud then I would suggest investing in something that has a good amount of RAM (8GB RAM recommended), a good graphics card (1GB VRAM recommended), a good processor and plenty of hard disk space.
Here is the specifications for Photoshop and Illustrator:
    System requirements | Photoshop
    System requirements | Illustrator
My suggestion would be something like this Dell Precision M3800 — 15" Mobile Workstation | Dell UK

Im completely new to Mac. Im swapping my windows laptop for macbook pro and looking for network storage solution which the Time Capsule seems to do. Is it possible to use this as NAS for my desktop Windows PC - windows 7

Broadly speaking I want some sort of network storage( wireless or through my existing wifi router) that I can access files for both my windows PC and Macbook and also to access files to my iPad/ iPhone. Some sort of backup and sychronisation so that I can access certain files remotely.
Buy a real NAS.. synology or QNAP are the standard... although companies like Netgear and Western Digital and Seagate make them as well.
There is no problem sharing between Mac and PC now.. you do not even need a NAS to do that.. you simply share the hard disk directly. Mac talk SMB.. everything talks SMB nowadays.. so it is easy.
ipad and iphone are not designed to use NAS.. they are designed to backup only to the cloud or itunes.. but you can load an app like file browser if you want.
    http://www.stratospherix.com/products/filebrowser/
Remote access to the Apple TC is somewhere between difficult, to impossible from a PC.. Apple use BTMM and iCloud but the service is not offered to PC.
A real NAS will offer HTTPS or SFTP or several other methods.. that both Mac and PC can use.
You simply plug it into the current wireless router.. it is a network device and assessable over the network. It is not necessary to buy another router.. in fact that is a waste.

  • New Laptop for Editing on PR and AE

I'm looking at buying a laptop to run Premiere AND After Effects for post production and editing work. The current laptop I'm looking at is the Toshiba - Qosmio  (Specs - http://tinyurl.com/nv8wf9a). Is this a good laptop for Premier and After Effects to run on decently or is there a better one you would reccommend for a similar price.

Hmm... the title at the top of your linked page says 500Gig hard drive, but down in the specification list it says 1T - so that is confusing
If possible, 2 hard drives (both 7200rpm) is better... otherwise, a couple of past discussions

  • Laptops, Final Cut Pro, and HD footage

    To the Apple staff:
I'd like to buy a Mac laptop and I'd rather not spend more money than I need to. I've shot some video in HD and I've heard only the $4,000.00 fully loaded model can run the footage. Right now I'm using a MacBook with 1 gb memory and it's too jerky to edit. Is there a medium cost solution that would do the trick? Or is there a way to quickly, inside the computer, dub down some of the footage just for editing purposes (that wouldn't leave it looking too washed out)?
    Best Wishes,
    Carol

    hey there Carol,
i'm running FCS2 on my MacBook to edit HDV footage-have Sony A1-U so footage is 1080i. so far i've had similar issues that i think can be handled w/ an increase in RAM(MacBook can handle 3 GB) which i intend to get ASAP. closing open seq's. helps somewhat & i can't use more than 2-3 video/audio tracks in a seq., but i love the size/weight of MacBook & when i work in FCP @ home i use my 23" HDTV Monitor for 2nd display 'cause Viewer & Canvas windows are so small.... sometimes i sit on my porch/patio w/ my port FW HDDs & work if the weather is nice. if you have the $$$ to get a fully loaded 17" MBP by all means go for it, it's the best option for FCS 2. if you don't get more RAM, don't have lots of Apps or CPU/GPU intensive Apps or seq's. open-ie. Motion & LiveType.
    good luck.

  • Need advice before I buy laptop for editing

I have edited mini DV on a 7 years old laptop with PE 3. Now it is time for me to buy a new laptop so I can edit footage from a Canon XA10.
And buy a new video editing program. PE 12 is one of my top candidates because PE 3 has worked fine for years.
I plan to record AVCHD, 24 Mbit/s, 8 bit, 4:2:0, true 1920*1080 for maximum quality. In PAL.
No, I have never edited HD.
Yes, I have tried to check what various software companies suggest.
My editing is normally very trivial, even though I make long movies (hundreds of hard cuts in the same film). But when I do something complicated, the result is just a few seconds long.
How powerful laptop do I need? I have the impression that the following is the minimum for editing both PE and the competitors, but please correct me if I have made some mistake.
Any Intel core i7 quad core CPU with at least 2.0 GHz
One single mechanical hard drive, 5400 or 7200 RPM (I mean SSD not necessary)
    4 GByte RAM
Any graphics card with at least 1 GByte graphics memory
I have the impression that editing HD means that one hard drive is not enough because the laptop needs to handle so much data. But how many external hard drives do I need? I want to minimize cost.
And do I have to connect the external hard drives via USB 3, or is USB 2 enough?
And one more technical question. When I edit, I see the whole project on the laptop's screen. How do I do to see only the film? With mini DV, I connect a television receiver to a camcorder and the camcorder with firewire to the laptop. But I don't know how I am supposed to do when I edit HD. Is there anything I must take into account when I choose what laptop I buy?

I have continued to think about my problem.
The main problem is that when laptops are sold, they are not optimized for video editing because few people edit video on laptops. And far from all of those who sell laptops are familiar with video editing, so asking them to optimize a laptop may end in misunderstandment.
So I have thought about one possibility. Buy a "cheap" laptop with powerful processor and enough graphics memory. Then tell somebody who repairs laptops to replace part of the hardware with something more suitable for video editing.
But before I do that, I must know exactly what to replace.
So I have thought about some alternatives to upgrade a laptop as painlessly as possible.
    1.
I have read a short description of SanDisk ReadyCache. This is 32 GByte SSD with software. Connect it to a computer and files which are used often can be accessed up to 4 times faster than on a hard drive. Sounds relevant for video editing, but I have no idea if it works in practice. I mean, reviews are favourable but I have no idea if the reviewers used it for video editing.
    2.
Replacing a 5400 RPM hard drive would not cost me that much. My external hard drives are almost full so I need to buy new ones. I mean, I can tell somebody to replace a 5400 RPM hard drive with either SSD or a faster hard drive (7200 RPM). The 5400 RPM hard drive can I then use with firewire 3.0 as an external hard drive.
    3.
Unless I have misunderstood something, one can make a computer more powerful by using an USB memory as some form of memory. How much would that help in video editing?
I think this is what Microsoft calls ReadyBost, but I have never used it so I don't know.
By the way, if I use an USB memory in this way, how large should it preferably be? And how fast?
Any more suggestions than those above? And what is the preferable solution?
And yes, I have thought about the possibility to use a Small Form Factor PC, but since they are rare I have problems finding anyone. If somebody knows about a suitable one, please tell.

  • Editing SD and HD footage together in one project in FCE

I have both SD and HD footage that I have imported (in addition to still shots) into a project, which is now ready to edit in FCE.  This is my wedding video and I would love to avoid as many problems as possible before I get too far down the road in editing.  Is there anything I should know about combining the SD and HD footage in FCE?  Are there certain settings that I should check before editing?  I am concerned about aspect ratios and how that might ultimately skew the picture when burned to a DVD.  Any basic guidelines that you could provide would be very helpful.  Thanks!

This is great information, thank you.  After reading the responses, (and doing some additional research) I think I'll try create a shortened version of the video using only the HD footage and share via youtube and/or vimeo.  I would also like to produce a longer video (under 1 hour) that includes both my DV and HD footage and burn that DVD for a few people.  Given that I will be burning this to DVD, it seems that I should downsize the HD footage before editing to have it all at the DV level for one sequence in my FCE project.  I have two questions for creating this longer video with the output to DVD:
    1) How to downsize the HD footage: there seems to be several suggestions for this process, so I was wondering which is the most effective (and least time consuming).  Please note that I have already loaded all the clips (DV and HD clips) and still photos into a new project, which took some time.  I hope to be able to leverage that effort in some way (so I don't have to start from scratch again).
         a) Convert the HD footage using Streamclip before bringing it into the project
         b) Select the HD clips and export using Quicktime Conversion, select the DV codec, and resize for DV aspect ratio pixels (either 720 x 365 to match 4:3 DV aspect ratio, or 720 x 405 to match the 16:9 DV aspect ratio)
         c) Put all the HD clips in the project and do a batch export to DV
         d) Create a DV sequence in FCE and drag all HD clips to the timeline, which will automatically downsize them and will then require rendering
         e) Create a DV sequence in FCE and drag all HD clips to the timeline, then highlight all the HD clips, go to Modify > Fit to Sequence, which should resize it to match the sequence settings
         f) Resize the HD footage using a 3rd party app called Compressor before bringing it into the project
    2) Do I still need to crop the footage even after downsizing the HD footage?  I assume that "crop" means that the image will stil be too big for the DV level editing, so part of the image will not fit, so I will need to scale it (or something like that).  Is that right?  It seems very labor intensive to do that for every clip, hopefully this is not the case.
    Thank you for your help!
