Laptop freeze

Recently acquired my co workers laptop after he got a new one. He is not very savvy when it comes to pc world.
Satellite L305-S5901 Vista 32 Bit.
He apparently didn't understand about antivirus protection therefore had known for along time .
The laptop freezes after booting into any user acct . When one tries to open a program, view a folder contents, pretty much any action results in the whole screen freezing.
i have to reboot into safe mode to get some semblance of operation back.
Have run vista repairs and diagnostics resulting in no apparent problems.
Antivirus programs etc will not complete their scans.
I do not have the install discs, he bought this unit new w/ pre installed Vista.
Is there a way for Toshiba to remotely do a wipe then a re install of Vista ?
What other options do I have ?
thanks

See the section Hard Drive Recovery Utilities, which begins on p. 60 of the User's Guide.

That model may or may not have all or some of the utilities. If it has none, you'll need to order the recovery discs from Toshiba.

  • Laptop freezes while on battery power.

I have Arch 64 bit install on a Thinkpad T510. While the laptop is plugged into power, it is rock solid and can run for days without a crash.
The laptop freezes up quite often when it is running on battery power. After anything from 15 minutes to an hour, it will probably freeze. I cannot switch to a tty, I just have to do a hard reset.

I'm not sure if tracker could be causing the problem, or if it is something else.
I have the discrete graphics card enabled - NVIDIA Corporation GT218 [NVS 3100M]

It might not necessarily be caused by loss of power, but maybe if the battery power dips? Or if the battery gets too hot and something overheats, then that could cause freezing. I'm only going by what I've found on google.
Anyway, I found another thread (not sure why I didn't see it before) that suggests that it might be caused by bluetooth (bluez specifically) https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=115814, but it seems like that was more of a locking up problem than freezing completely. I've remove bluez and disabled bluetooth for now anyway (unfortunately can't remove it completely because I'm on Gnome Shell) and I'll run on battery for a good while and see if things freeze again.
EDIT: also followed this - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HDAPS in case the problem was caused by the hard drive being moved about.

  • Win 8.1 upgrade, laptop freeze for 10 second

    Hi,
Anyone experiences this, after upgrading for Win 8.1, my laptop freezes 10 seconds every now and then. It doesn't matter if I am running just the browser or working in excel. Anyone have similar problems and any solutions?

Can you please give full notebook model but also BIOS and ME version please?
It sounds like some incompatibility with drivers.

  • [SOLVED] Laptop freezes at startup after kernel upgrade to 3.13.6

Some days ago I got a new Dell Sputnik 3 Laptop and installed Arch Linux with UEFI Boot and gummiboot as bootloader. The installation was successful.
However two days ago there was an upgrade for the Linux Kernel from 3.13.5 to 3.13.6. When I restarted the Laptop after the upgrade of the kernel the Laptop freezed directly after pushing the power button (never got ahead of the initial DELL logo).
I ran the DELL hardware diagnostics to identify a possible damage of the SSD but everything was ok. Than I booted into a live system ad mounted the root partition and there was no problem work on it. Additionally I change the value of timeout in gummiboots loader.conf (it was commented out before). Since than I got the gummiboot boot menu at least. So narrowing down, I think something happened during the kernel upgrade. Unfortunately I have no clue what could it be since I am convinced that at the installation process some days before I did everything like it was described at the beginners guide so automatic gummiboot update had to be possible.
The drive is partitioned in the live system looks like this (look at sda):
    ├─sda1 8:1 0 512M 0 part /boot
    └─sda2 8:2 0 235G 0 part /
    fstab like this:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    # /dev/sda2
    UUID=3f216fdb-f4c6-459a-856f-6f246d7a5bff / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1
    # /dev/sda1
    UUID=0F8F-2A3B /boot vfat rw,relatime,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro 0 2
    # swap
    /swapfile none swap defaults 0 0
I have and arch.conf in gummiboot looking like this:
    title Arch Linux
    linux /vmlinuz-linux
    initrd /initramfs-linux.img
    options root=/dev/sda2 rw
and the loader.conf of gumiboot looking like this:
    timeout 5
    default 56cccedc29f1418ab2d8f1762ea09471-*
Now, I don't know anymore how to proceed to identify the problem and hopefully solve it

looks like this issue might be the same:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=172961&p=1
If I find time I might try using an alternative to gummiboot to see if this works.
Update: There also seems to be a reopened bug report on this https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/33745

  • Laptop freezes.. .slowly...

I already had my system board (main board)replaced due to the bsod and now that I have gotten it back I have tihs new problem. Occasionally I'll be using the laptop and a program will crash, which is fine so I try to go to the task manager. I ctrl-alt-del and click task manager and the task manager NEVER comes out. I try this twice and by this time every program is crashing and not responding one by one. Then finally the laptop freezes. I can never get to my task manager when this is happening. What could be the issue now>?
I have a T400 btw... Thank in advance.

    welshphil, welcome to the forum,
    as you've had difficulty running chkdsk I would suggest;
    a) backing up any important files on the drive to another mediumif at all possible.
    b) using a third party software to check the hard drive. All hard drive manufactures offer a free iso image download which can be used for this purpose on their support sites. example: Drive Fitness Test from Hitachi.
If you're not sure of the hard drive's manufacturer use DFT, it's kind enough to tell you whether or not a drive from another manufacturer is OK or not.
Let us know how you get on.

  • When streaming a live webcast laptop freezes

I have attempted two webcast using Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder 3.2 and about 20 minutes into the webcast my laptop freezes. I have to shut-down holding down the power button to re-boot and restart Encoder to resume live stream. Looking at the encoding log I did not see any problems like "drops" to alert me that I may encounter a problem.
    Laptop (HP):
    123 GB Freespace
    Windows 7 Professional
    Service Pack1
    Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T9600 @ 2.80 GHz
    32-bit Operating System
    2 GB Ram
Using a DSL line for making connection to server with Adobe Flash Media Interactive Software 3.5.
The Encoder setting I am using are:
    Video:
    Frame Rate: 29.97
    Input Size 720x480
    Bit rate 350
    Required Bandwidth read 406
    Audio:
    Fomat MP3
    Channel Mono
    Sample Rate 44100
    Bit Rate 56
I am new to working with video and do not have clue what might be causing this problem other than laptop upgrades needed?
    Thanks

It sounds as if there is a problem with the TV\Monitor. I note that you have not specified what other inputs the device has. That would help. You call it a monitor. Most of the rest of us are using LCD displays. It is only 20 inch per your description. I wouldn't use it if it wouldn't accept a video signal with a resolution higher than 1024 x 768.

It is normal for configuring updates to takee a while, appear to be froen, and reboot a few times depending on how many windows updates there were.  If it is still doing so, there may have been a bad update causing your computer to act this way.  Were they Windows Updates or some program you just installed?
What is the make and model of your computer and version of Windows you are using.
If need be, did you create recovery disks when you got the computer?

  • Laptop freezing suddenly

Hi, my laptop HP G62 freezes suddenly during usage. Neither detects mouse or keyboard. The display remains as it is. I have to remove the battery or long press the power button to get it an improper shut down and start once again. It's freezing at intervals such as 1 or 2 hours sometimes just in 5 minutes after I start. Can anyone say what can be the problem. Recently I had my graphics issue which I had repaired. Does that issue related to this problem. Or is it any other.

Actually you better try this one , its much easier :
    http://hcidesign.com/memtest/download.html
Just download it and start testing , if it shows some errors and/or your laptop freezes during test then youl know its your RAM.

  • Laptop freeze when no pressure

    Hi,
I have a strange problem on a M60-CD4 laptop (I know, that laptop model number is strange too!): when I dont push on the casing or the screen, the laptop freeze and if I "repush" on it, it's "unfreezing" at the same place.  No error, no blue screen, only freezing laptop ?!?  Sometimes when I'm lucky, I place the screen in a position that the laptop work no problem but I'm not so lucky!
Any idea ?  Broken motherboard maybe ?!?  Any other idea ?  Is there service manual where I can find the way to open it correctly to view component ?
    Thanks a lot!

I am desesperate. The Datasocket - OK version.vi 19 KB that seemed to work so well (no freeze at all) creates a huge memory leakage as you can see in the attached file. I am only reading a tag (local OPC tag, not even remote tag on another PC's OPC server) and the word document attached shows the issue:
After 15-20min during which no increase of memory is noticed (first picture) the situation starts to worsen. In 12 hours (about 7200 read operations) it reaches a consumption of 65Mb ! (to read everytime the same OPC tag). Something that I never noticed with the Datasocket - NOK version.vi 19 KB that had the freezing issue...
I really do not know what to do.
    Thanks for your prompt feedback

  • Cooling fan makes noise n laptop freezes

    hi,
     i got a satellite -215 S4747
after i start my cooling fan starts making some noise as if its struggling to rotate, n within few minutes laptop freezez,,
i got it checked der was no dust or anything found on the fan..
    pls help.

Is your model A215-S4747?  Support site here
If there is no dirt clogging the heat sink fins, and none in the fan blades, then it may be the fan itself is/has failed.  replace fan or attempt to relube existing fan.  search the internet on how to restore a fan by relubing.  I think replace would be better, and what you may ultimately have to do anyway.

  • Problem: Laptop freezes on battery

Hi since I installed arch to my laptop I have been having problems when I'm using the battery and the wireless (I think).
The problem is that the laptop freezes and I can't move the mouse, type or change to any tty, and then the cpu fan goes crazy, at this point I hold the power button to shut down. It don't happens always, sometimes it happens before the GDM is loaded, sometimes when I'm already logged. Lately I noticed that if I close the wireless interface it don't crash instantly when I'm logged and sometimes it don't crash at all.
For sometime I have been thinking that the problem is my wireless chip (BCM4313) and I have been following that post: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=111554 but my laptop is still getting freeze so I don't really know which is the problem.
    There is my rc.config http://pastebin.com/E83zsZ4y
    My lspci : http://pastebin.com/1pCUTe82
And the message.log of the last crash I had: http://pastebin.com/XvgvF3sF
My laptop is a Toshiba satellite R630-13U
I hope someone have an idea of which is the problem
PD: Sorry for my bad english...

I had a bizzar set of events happen. MSN Messenger was definitely messing up on loading. At the same time I am using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard which have been working fine. Not certain what happened to drop both at the same time, but they stopped working at the same time I started experiencing problems with Messenger.
It appeared the machine was locked up, when actually it was not recognizing either the keyboard or mouse. Started up in safe mode and used the keyboard on the Macbook. I unistalled MSN Messnger and then realized my other keyboard and mouse were not responding.
Set both of them back up under Bluetooth, installed Adium, and life is good again.
    Thanks for your comments.

please give me a solution to fix this

    Hi,
This issue may be due to various reasons,
    - A possible virus attack - scan the machine using antivirus program.
    - When connected to internet, some programs checks online for any available updates.
    - It may be due to hard disk issue - perform defragmentation of drives.
