Laptop froze during software update now it won't boot?

I can get in into disk utility and have erased my disk, but cannot reinstall OS X. I believe the issue is that cannot erase, partition, or unmount or "OS X Base System" in terminal. I've tried restoring a backup from Time Machine and even inserting an old snow leopard software disk.
Any suggestions? I'm about ready to give up!

  • MacBook Pro froze during software update, now it's stuck at gray screen

My MacBook Pro was running a little slow today so I did a Disk Utility repair and that went fine then I did a software update (OS X, Java and remote desktop) but it froze during the last ten percent of the update install and now when I boot up it won't get past the gray apple screen. I tried to restore Lion but since I bought this used my Apple ID wasn't used to purchase Lion so I can't do a restore.
I've tried to safe boot and boot from a CD but no go.
I also tried the short and long Apple hardware tests and those found no problems

In case anyone else needs an answer to this, I called in to Apple. Tech support said to power it off and let it reboot itself. I had to go back into updates and tell it to finish the install (restart computer, was the only step remaining) and it worked fine. It took longer because it had gotten hung up during the previous restart. ( Just to clarify, I was stuck on the grey screen after the restart step of the install.)

My current operating system is 10.9.1 and I downloaded the 10.9.2 update. I am now stuck on the Installing Software Update screen that appears during reboot. I have been stuck here for about an hour and don't know what to do. Help, please!

  • Just did software update, now mail won't open!!

I just ran a software update and now may mail application won't open. These are the five updates that I installed:
    Backup 3.1.1
    iPhoto 6.0.6
    Airport Base Station 5.1
    iTunes 7.2
Mac OSX Update Combined (PowerPC) 10.4.10
I don't think I needed to install that last one, about the Power PC....Anyone know if that is enough to keep my Mail App. from openenig? I can still check my e-mail via .Mac, just not through my Mail Appliacation.

Did you download the correct Combo for PPC, since it
appears you do not have an Intel Mac?
If the correct Combo version, then I think you should
run Disk Repair from the original Tiger install disk
to check out your hard drive.
How much free disk space do you have on your hard
drive, or if partitioned, on the boot partition?
    Ernie
    Ernie,
thanks for the suggestions. I'm not quite the Mac expert I'd like to be, so bear with me please. How do I know if I downloaded "the correct Combo for PPC, since it appears you do not have an Intel Mac?" Wouldn't my computer automatically download the correct one? How can I check if it's the right one? ALSO,
How do I "run Disk Repair from the original Tiger install disk to check out your hard drive"? Do I need to insert the original startup disk again, or can I do it without it?
When doing info on my mac, it says I only have 6.1 GB left available. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!!!

  • Software update now phone won't synch!!!

    Hi!
    Can anymore please help me!
So i have the latest iPhone 5S, it stated it needed updating in software, so I updated it to iOS 7.1 today, but not via my itunes, it was just updated on the phone.
The software updated without any problems at all, but when I have gone to link it to my Macbook, it has stated that it is unable to start synching, this has happened every time, has anyone else had problems with this!
    Thank You!!!!

Actually, it would explain why the battery depletes. If the device is constantly trying to search for the network it will run the battery down quite quickly. I'm skeptical that the sim card will fix it since Verizon doesn't use a sim card in the US. The sim card is only for international roaming. I don't know what happened during the update but you may need to reload the OS on the device.
And, "POS?" I've had my Z10 since launch day and love it.

  • Help-eMac froze during software update and is now stuck on Grey Screen!

So I recently moved, and was updating the software on my eMac. While it was updating, I was looking through some photos(probably my first mistake). When I tried opening one torwards the end of the update, my computer froze up. I waited a few minutes for it to resolve but ended up resetting the computer by holding down the power switch(second mistake?). When I restarded the computer, all I got was a grey screen. Now I'm stuck and don't know what to do. Can someone out there help me? I can't find my restart disc and tried the command,option,p,r-trick.
    thanks for your time,
    Andrew

    MingusBass,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Ouch. As you've already discovered, running anything else while a system or security update is running is not a good idea. If you use the power button to force-restart a Mac while it's still at the "optimizing system" stage, stalled or not, it can damage the Finder and the startup manager / login items (e.g., leave the previous version marked .old without finishing 'blessing' the new copy).
Is it possible to borrow a second Mac with the same OS / security version, or a bootable external hard drive? It's possible to boot a Mac that crashed while optimizing the system in FireWire target disk mode and replace the damaged files (bear in mind, I say that as an interested observer at work several years ago and I can't swear I remember each and every step, other than replacing a Finder.old in the System folder).
You really need your OS X Install disc, which would let you do an Archive and Install. I'm doubtful if booting into single-user mode to run the Unix file system check utility fsck would help but you can always try it.

  • Software update, now apps won't start?

I just updated the software in my girlfriend's Iphone 3gs, and now the downloaded apps wind up on a separate page, and they won't start up. Their title pages just flash onscreen, then discontinue. No error messages.

It sounds ljke you interrupted an update that was failing. You said it was reinstalling upon reboot? Something's wrong there.
Clone the external drive to the internal.
Use Disk Utility to Restore your external to the internal or download and use CarbonCopyCloner.

  • I have an iPhone which froze during software update to a picture of iTunes and USB cable.  I have never loaded this device on my computer.  How do I unlock the phone?

My iPhone froze while downloading a new update.  The screen now shows a picture of iTunes icon and USB cable.  How do I unlock the phone if I never registered the device on a computer?

Have you tried to restore the iPad back to factory settings from within the Setting App?  You might also try and hard "reset" by holding the power button and the home button at the same time until the iPad 2 restarts.
Besides that, find a friend with a computer and try to update it from their comptuer, or if it is close and convenient go to the Apple Store and they will be able to help you.

  • Ipod touch froze during software update

hi. my ipod touch is frozen and displays a picture of the apple cable with and arrow to connect to iTunes.

  • Plugged in iPhone to update, now MBP won't boot up

I have a MBP Unibody (late 2008) running OS 10.5.8 and a 3G iPhone - everything was working fine until today when I plugged in the iPhone to update to OS4.1 - iTunes wouldn't open and gave me a weird message about installing a new version. Tried again, nothing, but the computer froze, so I held down the power button to shut it down. When I went to restart - I just got the gray start up screen with a black apple and a spinning symbol - but it never got past that.
I tried starting up in safe mode, couldn't.
Then I tried running disk utility to repair the HD. No luck, repair failed.
So now, I'm trying to figure out how to get my data off my HD. I know I can reboot and reinstall everything (if HD is okay, this should work) - but like an idiot, I don't regularly back-up my HD. Now I'm stuck with a bunch of valuable info on that HD that I really can't afford to lose. How do I get it off there?
I have another mac, can I connect these two via firewire or ethernet and copy the appropriate files over?
Can I back it up to an external HD? I tried this, but I can't seem to get the "system drive" into the source field to back up. It won't let me drag it there.
What can I do other than pay big bucks for someone to pull it off for me?
    Please help!

was able to get the system drive into the source box, but it still wouldn't let me back it up, which brings up my next question - if I remove the HD and install it in an external enclosure - hook it up to another mac, will I be able to access those files that way or since it can't be repaired, I'm S.O.L.?

  • Installed latest Safari update, now iMac won't boot?

OK, I'm baffled. This has never happened before. I was using my machine just fine this afternoon. I got a notification that new software was available and I checked and it said it was a safari update. So I downloaded and chose to reboot later when I finished all my work and closed a bunch of items down.
I went upstairs to eat dinner, and came back down expecting to see the machine up and running. Uh-Uh. So I held the side button down until it beeped and then released it. Heard the "ta-da" and the black screen turned light gray but no slotted pinwheel. It stays right there. I tried pulling the plug for 10-15 seconds, same deal. It stops after the musical intro on the gray screen and never gos further.
Is there any way to force-boot the system? Is this what some people refer to as "freezing" or planned obsolescence? I bought an iMac because I was tired of fighting with PC hardware, OS's, and viruses. I would hate to believe that Apple has sunken so low so as to plan the early death of this marvelous machine. Its shameful that I have to use an old PC to get on an Apple Support site and ask about what's wrong with my Mac. At least with the PCs you can easily rip them apart and replace bad components. Here I'm trapped in Apple's all-in-one don't you dare take it apart design.
Hopefully there's a easy way out and maybe someone will clue me in.
    Doc

No, Apple is not out to get you.
What is most likely is simply the physics of magnetic media. From your description I'd say something untoward happened during the Safari install. Whether that was corruption of your directory or a physical failure of your hard drive or something else I can't say, but the first step should be to locate your Install DVD and see if you can boot from it. Insert the disk while the screen is grey; the iMac should still "eat" it. If not you'll need to find an external DVD drive and use that.
Assuming you have a DVD loaded and the machine boots from it the first thing I would do is run Disk Repair on your internal hard drive. You will find this in the menu options on screen, upper left hand side... I can't remember the exact sequence, but poke around, you'll find Disk Utilities, one of which is Disk Repair. Run that and hopefully your problem will be solved. If not you can resort to stronger medicine like DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro, but those are 3rd party apps that costs quite a bit of $$$. If you don't want to try repairing and your Mac boots from the Install disk you can (hopefully you've kept a backup of your data) try a fresh install of OS X, or drop into an Apple Store and see what they can do for you at the Genius Bar. Good luck!
