Laptop is extremely slow to start up
I have a Pavilion g7 Notebook PC. When I power it on, the light by the power button and the light on the f12 (wireless) come on and I can hear the fan. However, nothing happens for 2 minutes and the display remains black. After the 2 minutes elapse, I get a message "Press the ESC key for Startup Menu". Pressing the ESC key brings me to the startup menu after about 5 seconds. All of the options on the startup menu function as they should. I have performed a hard reset of the system which didn't fix the problem. I am able to get into BIOS settings and everything there looks normal to me. I have also performed the following system diagnostics with the following results:
Processor Check: PASSED Memory Test: PASSED Hard Disk SMART Check: PASSED
Hard Disk Short DST: PASSED
After exiting the Startup Menu or if I let the system bypass the Startup Menu and perform a normal boot, I just get a blank screen with a flashing cursor in the upper right corner of the screen. I would greatly appreciate any assistance in fixing this problem.
Thank you for responding to my post. I don't see any reference to UEFI or extensive tests. The closest thing I can find to do extensive testing is under the option System Tune-Up. I am running that now. It is giving me an estimate of approx. 4 hours. I will write back with any error codes after that completes.

Photoshop Elements 10 is extremely slow to start
Photoshop Elements 10 is extremely slow to start. It needs three minutes after starting before any sign of the program appears.
Then another three minutes passes before the program will respond to a mouse click.
While the program is in use, the display frequently freezes at seemingly random times and is unresponsive for a varying period of time.
It has always been this way since installation.
I read in the community forums that starting the Photoshop editor directly with a shortcut will bypass the start screen and eliminate the problem. Tried it--it does not.
I also in the community forums that the program is trying to connect with photoshop.com which no longer exits. The fix offered was to disconnect from the Internet. This is not acceptable.
I will not be upgrading to a newer version as a fix (as someone suggested) unless it is offered without additional cost.
Is there any sort of work around if not an actual fix for this problem?

With the Internet connected, Photoshop 10 needs better than 6 minutes to start up and be ready to use. Starting while disconnected from the Internet requires less than 10 seconds.
This is a work around, but it is not a fix. Temporary and unacceptable.
Uninstall, reinstall? Been there, done that, too many times.
I was hoping for something different that would either fix the problem or upgrade a faulty product for users who deserve better.

Laptop running extremely slow, how do I fix it?fix it?
My late 2010 macbook pro has been running extremely slow lately. It would take anywhere from 5-10 minutes to start up and rests on a blue screen during that time. I even just got the beach ball while typing this, without any programs running except safari. I get the beach ball just by opening system preferences. I ran disk verify and found out my harddrive was corrupted. So I erased everything, reinstalled the OS, and downloaded the standard applications. I ran disk verify again and everything appears to be okay. However, it is still running super slow and beach balling frequently. I haven't even transferred all of my files over yet. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Thanks!
Nothing large, activity monitor is using the most. I am currently on a college campus and went to the technology help center, the manager looked at my laptop and repaired disk permissions. It definitely is going faster than before, however I am still noticing some random lag.

Firefox would slow up when cache builds up. Especially at start ups. Extremely slow. Then a few second later it would go back to normal. Then when i check the cache. It has already been cleared automaticly. Can somebody please explain whats going on. Looks like it has something to do with Automatic cache management system. THank you very much.
You may want to just get one utility for now.
At this point, do you need a new graphic card? then you need to upgrade to Leopard. If your software and system won't be a problem regardless of compatibility great, but make sure. Otherwise, Snow Leopard will likely require lots more upgrades and updates.
But maybe doing an upgrade to Leopard and then test the waters with Leopard and Snow L. makes better sense.
Only the "Early, Early" 2006-7 1st Gen Mac Pros can run 10.4.11 (or at least install and officially supported).
The product pages have misleading information but you do need 10.5.7 for the 4870 which is your best graphics upgrade choice. The 3870 came out a year ago and requires 10.5.3+. -
IPhoto 11 Extremely Slow to Start
After upgrading to iPhoto 11, it now takes minutes to start. The dock icon bounces for so long that it actually stops bouncing, then another minute or 2 it starts. Once it's open, the performance isn't too bad.
I have scoured this forum for solutions; I have tried the following:
1. Launch iPhoto with Option+Command and checking most options in rebuilding database and thumbnails
2. Deleting old QuickTime plugins from various Library folders
3. Created new test iPhoto library and it still is very slow to start.
4. "opensnooped" iPhoto and found a errors. I noticed slow downs whenever it's trying to load ATS.framework and some other odd items. I have tried full combo updates of 10.6.5 + iPhoto 9.1.
The only thing I noticed is that if I "Option" start iPhoto with the library selection screen, then iPhoto opens almost immediately...
Do you guys know of any fixes for this?I dont have an answer, but at least your not alone. I am having what sounds like the same exact problem. I have tried shifting more memory ect w/o success.
Please include me on any solutions.

Extremely slow response/start up time
Hi guys,
Having an issue with my mid 2009 MBP, running Lion 10.7.5 with all current updates.
I've generally never had an issue with start up time or performance until very recently, aside from the odd kernel panic.
Within the last week (i've not made any changes or installed any new apps), response time has become EXCRUCIATINGLY slow, rainbow beachballing on me every 5 seconds and just super laggy. Start up time is unbearable, if it starts up at all (usually hangs on grey apple screen).
I've troubleshooted this a little as per the following;
- cleared PRAM/NVRAM
- Restarted in recovery mode, verified and repaired startup disk as well as disk permissions.
- Restarted in safe mode (it eventually booted)
- Booted in single user mode and performed fsck.
- installed all current software updates
- ensured there is 20% free space on start up disk
The only things i haven't done is opened it up, and checked/cleaned off the RAM - don't have a screwdriver small enough to do so
Anyone got any ideas? There's no clicking noises from the HDD and the fans aren't spinning unnecessarily..... I"m stumped

anyone else have the same problem? and if so, what is being done about it??
Back up your documents and everything else important to you, not that there is any reason to believe your hard disk may be failing, but the symptoms you describe may presage an impending disk failure, and you should have backups anyway.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting:
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. For Snow Leopard, start your Mac while holding the c key with its original OS X Install DVD inserted in its optical drive. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
Some users have reported an SMC reset to be beneficial. Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial. -

hello rlyslowff, one thing you could try is to remove all program rules for firefox from your firewall/security software and let it detect the program again...
please also [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/ update your plugins] (some of them are out-dated & have security vulnerabilities that are actively exploited on the web).
in case this didn't solve the issue, go to the firefox ''menu ≡ > help ? > troubleshooting information'', copy the contents of that page and paste them here into a reply on the forum, as this might give us further clues what is going on... -
Disk access extremely slow after 10.5.2 Update
I did the update to 10.5.2 today.
1. I tried to update via Software Update. The update started but then stopped with an Error message (Contact Support) and the system freezed. There was just the spinning wheel on blue background for more than one hour. No more harddisk activity. I finally rebooted (hard way). After a reboot I had a somehow upgraded system. But many things did not work anymore (most applications crashed, mail could not access keychain items anymore, etcpp)
2. Then I downloaded the complete Update package to do a manual update (happily firefox still worked). After a manual install it worked. It installed fine and rebooted. Now everything works as it should with the only problem that everything is extremly slow. Starting an application lasts about double the time as normal, loading files takes 3 to 4 times more time than with 10.5.1
To fix these issues I tried several things:
- Fixed permissions
- Cleared all cache files and forced system to rebuild them
- Severall reboots
- Waited until backup completed and Spotlight index was rebuilt
Bootup time is now fine (more or less). Just a little slower than 10.5.1. Application start is still slow but better. But the file access is still extremly slow. This can be observed very well in Parallels which still works fine, but needs 3 to 4 times longer to start (so do all applications within parallels). I checked CPU (Activity Monitor) but could not see anything special.
Any ideas what could be the reason for this behaviour and (more important) how to possibly fix this? I'm thinking about going back to 10.5.1 with time-machine and then try it again with the package install.
Any help/ideas would be appreciated. Is it slow wireless LAN behavior affecting Time Machine? Check out the third page of this thread, specificallly the post by John Albergo about "delay_ack."

Adobe premiere cs6 suddenly EXTREMELY slow and CPU intensive
Hi everyone,
I'm editing candon 5d mk III footage (h.264 files) on my late 2011 MacBook pro. Here are the specs..
240 gig SanDisk SSD harddrive (190 gigs free)
500 Gig (250 gigs free)
8 gigs ram
2.4 ghz i5 processor
Intel HD graphics 3000 graphics card
I'm a wedding videographer and I am currently closing my last edits of the season. I have edited 20+ 45 minute videos on Adobe Premiere CS6 and have had absolutely no issues at all. I enjoy working on premiere so much that I've been trying to get my videographer friends to give a shot and simplify their workflows.
Upon starting my second to last edit (same process as the other 18 videos I've done this season, organizing the footage within it's respective folder, loading it into premiere with the couples' choice in music and opening 4-5 new sequences based on the events of the day) I noticed that I was having a lot of trouble importing folders into my media bin. I had to import all of the footage unorganized because loading the folders "Preperation, Ceremony, Photos, Reception" with the footage within them would cause premiere to freeze and become unrepsonsive. So, finding no solution I added all the footage in no particular fashion. Just one large unorganized group. Then, while organizing the files into bins, I noticed even the smallest move would take several minutes to complete. Because I was working directly off of my hard drive I figured these kinds of delays would eventually catch up to me, so I moved all of my files to my HDD and decided to work on them there. The project itself continued to be extremely slow and started crashing regularly (especially when applying audio effects). After a few hours, I stopped being able to play 1080p video at all. It would jam and stutter so often it become unuseable. 720p video was the next to go along with my ability to render anything in less than 30 minutes - 1 hour. At last attempt to use premiere I was getting an "Unable to compile movie - Unknown Error" message when trying to render alpha channel things (lower third titles and things of the nature), my ability to change the resolution of the playback had disappeared (Going from full, 1/2 and 1/4 did nothing, it just remained at full quality) and finally doing anything in premiere caused it to use 300% of my CPU (based off of my Activity Monitors metering).
Does anybody have any clue as to what could be happening to my machine/program? I have a yearly subscription to adobe's creative cloud service if that helps. Oh and I've tried moving my media cache's from my HDD to my SDD with little or no results. Don't know if that helps.
Thank you to anyone who helps in advance. What I believe to be clean installs aren't doing anything so I'm hoping somebody can give me a hand.Sounds to me like specific media is dragging the Mac to a halt. (300%, really Apple? Isn't that like saying that my car can go up to 90mph, but last night I drove it at 300% speed, 270mph)
Some things to trouble shoot:
Do you have any assets in the project that are loaded directly from strange devices, like a SD card or CD audio? Any dynamic link media that may be problematic?
Is there anything that makes this footage different than footage from successful projects?
Can you work successfully with an old project?
Can you successfully start a new project using different or less media?
Is the 500 GB drive internal or external?
One time I was sent out at from work to troubleshoot a system that would freeze up like yours. The guy was an idiot and rude client that demanded that someone from our facility help him fix his own project. He said that he had been troubleshooting for a day, and then had convinced his organization's IT guy that he needed a way over spec new pc to run Premiere.
His system was fine. Within 3 minutes of checking media in his project, I saw that top track of the problem sequence had a video clip that was set to a speed of .01%, and he had the clip stretched for 24hours in the sequence. His project was supposed to be a 2 minute PSA. All his issues went away after removing the idiotic Day Long slow motion clip. He complained to my boss because I had laughed at him.
I relate that story to illustrate that it could be a weird thing with you media or fx, just as well as a hardware or software issue.
Good Luck -
Hi
I have Mac mini that works extremely slow,
it starts to load the OS but turns really slow once the login is done, it takes about 30-40 min to load.
i did few tests like permissions verify and fix, then verify and repair disk which said that Macintosh HD is OK.
What should I do next? Its sounds like hardware issue - for my opinion its the HDD but I can't understand why when I use the Restore mode the computer works fast so maybe its OS issue related? Should I reinstall OSX?
what do you recommend for me as a Mac newbie user
thanks a lotThe boot drive is failing, or you have some other hardware fault.
Back up all data immediately, then make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed. -

You have two problems going on here...
1. Everyday laptop aren't made for hardcoregaming and overheating will cause your system to crash or freeze or lockup.
2. Flash problem would indicate corrupt installation files...
1. Get a Gaming laptop that will cost you 2000US or above
2. Reinstall flash...

My NB-505 runs very slowly even after a memory upgrade to 2GB. I have read comments from other users that this can sometimes result from "bloatware" packaged with the system, eating memory and hurting performance. If this is true, what packaged software should I look for and uninstall?

Extremely slow internet data downloading
I have 2 other older Macs connected to my LAN both of which access the internet at normal speed. My new Mac mini pings addresses at the same rate as the other Macs but data download speed is extremely slow. Has anybody had this problem?
Define extremely slow.
Start with the basics:
1. System Preferences -> Network -> Network Port Configurations.
Uncheck all the boxes except the method you use to connect to the network (airport checked if you are wireless, or Built-in ethernet if you are wired)
2. System Preferences - Network -> Airport (or Built-in Ethernet depending on step 1.) -> TCP/IP -> Configure IPv6
Change selection to OFF
Under DNS (Optional Box) you may wish to manually enter in the IP addresses of your Service Providers DNS servers.
3. Because you have older Macs with an older selection of LAN hardware to access the internet you may want to see what the speed and duplex settings are on your box (access switch, broadband router, hub) and match those settings on your Built-in Ethernet if you are using that instead of Airport.
4. If you are wired, switch cables with one of the older Macs.
That should be a start.
