Laptop keeps shutting down without warning because it thinks the battery is low, but it isn't.
My laptop is about 9 months old and recently it started to just shut down as if the battery were low. It is not low. It just did it now and the battery was at 80%. If I try to restart it it shows low battery and won't start. However, if I remove the battery and reinsert it, it starts up fine. Or, if I plug it in for a moment to start it up and then unplug it it works fine. The battery obviously still has plenty of juice left, but the computer is misreading it somehow. Although it still shows an accurate reading in the task bar. Any thoughts? Thank You.
UltimateBid,
Thanks for the update. I do not see anything on my end that talks about it, you can try to update the BIOS and see if that resolves the issue, otherwise I would recommend service possibly.

Mac pro keeps shutting down without warning
I have a 15 inch Macpro running Mac OS X Lion, version 10.7.3. It keeps shutting down without any warning. The screen just goes black and I have to press and hold the power button for a while till a hear a sound to turn the system off. This is happening like, more than 5 times a DAY. Please help, any suggestions are welcome.
Dose this issue happen when the computer is plugged in? or only when it's unplugged from power?
Have you checked for software updates? if so, have you installed all the updates? (apple menu, software update, install updates, reboot, repeate untill there are no more updates)
If the issue is happening while power is plugged in, have you tried a SMC Reset and NVRAM Reset?
Is there any thing externaly connected to the computer besides power? if so, haveyou tried removing those items; to see if the issue only happens while those devices are connected?
Do you know if yoru MacBook Pro has a NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT? (apple menu, about this mac)
Do you have any kind of keyboard cover? if so, have you tried removing the keyboard cover, dose the issue still happen?
You could also try running an Apple Hardware Test. If it give you any error codes; I would suggest writing down the exact error message it displays.
Also it might be a good idea to set the graphic card to run on the high end card; and see if the issue still happens. (apple menu, system prefrences, energy saver, At the top there should be a check box along the lines of use best graphic performance at all time, check this box) -
My MacBook Keeps shutting down without warning
Every since downloading Mavericks I have been having problems with my MacBook Pro. The worst thing is that the computer randomly shuts down without warning. Today this has happended about a dozen or more times. Every time it generates a report that is sent to Apple. I have coppied the first few lines of the report and I have pasted it below, I can post up the full report if need be: if anyone can help that would be great!

thanks very much for the help; the problem only started after I upgraded to Mavericks and started immediately after that. I have seen that there are other problems with my GPU particularly the icons on my desktop decaying. My computer is a mid 2010 CPU, it backs up automatically to our AirPort
In any case here is the full error message:

IBook g4 keeps shutting down without warning! Help please!
Hi everyone,
The problem in brief (as I'm scared the laptops gonna shut down again and I'd have to restart)
- I just upgraded my Tiger to Leopard
- Everything WAS running smoothly for approx. 4 hours, then as I was playing around with iTunes, the mac shutdown
- I had to restart it but as soon as I logged in, I was told "My Time and Date is set to a date before 1970", and that I was not connected to the Wireless.
- Just as I was connecting to the wireless, it shut down again.
-Once again I turned it on, and the same messages appeared. This time I managed to open safari before it shutdown again.
- I took out the battery, and used the AC power, but it shutdown as well.
- The battery, which was shown as fully charged 10 minutes ago, now on the lowest green light out of the 5 green lights situated at the back of the battery pack : s
So right now I'm running on AC power without a battery, paranoid it's gonna shutdown again without warning. Does anybody know what's wrong?
Your help will be much appreciated
Thanks.
Dakota.Hi,
Welcome to the Discussions.
It sounds like a bad battery. Try putting the battery in while it's running on the adapter then launch Apple System Profiler (Apple Menu>About this Mac>More info) and click on battery. See what its capacity is compared to the absolute capacity (4400). If it's 50% or less you need a new battery.

My mac keeps shutting down without warning
Can anyone help. My imac will suddenly turn itself off, this happens when I am not online and I can start it again immediately.
What model iMac do you have? G3, G4, G5, Intel-based? How old is it? What OS are you running, 10.3, 10.4, 10.5, 10.6, etc.
It sounds like your power supply is going bad. Here's a link to an old discussion with a similar sounding problem:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/1938289#1938289
This may or may not be a repair that you can do yoourself, depending on you iMac model. I've never had to do this repair so I can't help you out that way.
Good luck. -
2006 Macbook running 10.6.8 shuts down without warning
It's a 2006 Macbook (I bought new in 06) running os x 10.6.8. Up until 6 months ago no problems what so ever with the computer. I would be working and every once in a while, it would just shut down. Replaced the battery less than a year ago. Power supply (60w charger) had a short, so I replaced that about a week ago. Computer is still shutting down without warning. I did the 1.1 update on the OSX but it still acts up. I'm lucky to be able to use the computer right now (it's been running for 20 minutes...this time). Would it help if I upgraded to LION, or would it still do it then? Any help please...I'm a musician and it's my livelyhood.
Thanks,
DavidWhen a Mac shuts down without warning, it's doubtful an upgrade will be the fix. You need to find out what's causing the problem.
Check the startup disk.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click: Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If Disk Utility reports errors, restart the Mac while inserting the install disc and holding down the C key simultaneously. From there you should be able to repair the startup disk.
No errors were found, run the Apple Hardware Test > Using Apple Hardware Test
If installed, anti virus software can cause system anomalies such as an unexpected shut down. -
After updating my software from snow leapord to mountain lion my MacBook Pro suddenly keeps shutting down without any reason no warning suddenly just restarts... Can someone hel

Laptop keeps shutting down???????
Hi all,
I have an Equium laptop, which over the last few weeks has started shutting down on me!
Intially it seemed to be when it got hot,but now it shuts down within an hour of switching
on!!!! If anyone has any ideas as to why this is happening,i would be very gratefull.
Many thanksI have a Satellite L505D-S5965 3GB SDRAM, 250GB HDD and have been having the exact same problem that many of you have. This PC was originally loaded in 2007 and purchased (NEW) in 2008 and I've been living with this shutdown for well over 3 yrs.
After reading every review and so-called help to this problem, I have tried them all (including a re-load of the-out-of-box-state), and I have found zero that work. On my own, I did try this: I went to the Toshiba Eco Utility that (I presume) is built-in to each Toshiba made. I turn this to -ON- and make sure the screen is @ a dim of 4 or less. Sure, this is no good for gaming, but this is not a gaming computer to begin with. It has worked. No more shut downs, not more crappy (can't start msgs). If I turn it off though, OMG - within' 30 minutes - I hear that "Pearmmm" sound many of you are all too familiar with - and it shuts down without warning. So my recommendation is to use Toshiba Eco Utility and keep the PC as COOL/COLD as possible. I'm no computer genius, but this appears to be a heat-related issue, and it's sad to see so many people having issues with their Toshiba (ON A TOSHIBA SITE/FORUM) and Toshiba has not acknowledged this issue as of yet. Trust me guys, this is the last Toshiba I will ever purchase. I hope THIS post helps someone out there. ~Blaz0n -
PB G4 Shuts Down without warning
Hi everyone,
Recently I have noticed that my PB G4 (1.5 Ghz with OS 10.4.11) will randomly shut down without warning. The battery bar on the top right of my screen will not be in the red zone when this happens. I have also noticed that when I do reboot my laptop that I get a warning that my Date and Time are set to before 2001 which apparently will screw things up. But when I check them, they are set to today's date.
Can anyone help me please?
Thanks in advance,
BettinaHi, bettina. Before replacing your clock battery, test it as described in this article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30017
This may confirm that it's bad, or may encourage you to focus on finding the problem elsewhere.
What suggests that the battery is bad is the fact that your clock is wrong at startup. If your Date & Time options include obtaining the correct time from a network time server and your computer is connected to the internet all the time, that explains why the clock is reset to the correct time very soon after starting up. -
MacBook shuts down without warning during calibration (39% battery power)
My MacBook has been shutting down without warning during recent calibrations (which I've done approximately every two months). Most recently it shut down after 2 hours and 20 minutes on battery power with a battery reading of 39% -- i.e., nowhere close to the 0% of a fully rundown battery.
The result is that:
I'm not seeing the 'low battery' warning dialog before the computer shuts down; and
(ii) I'm not able to save current work and close all applications when the battery's charge gets low, before the computer goes to sleep (because it just shuts down without warning)
Can I do anything about this? Is it just an unavoidable indication of declining battery performance?
My MacBook is 15 months old. Current 'battery information' is listed below.
Thanks. Replies appreciated.

1. I'm not sure how to match the path you listed re: the '1.3 battery update' to what's on my MacBook. Maybe I just don't understand how to interpret it, but I don't have a root folder (or any other folder) identified as 'MacBook.' When I used Spotlight, I also didn't come up with a BatteryUpdater.bundle. A file named BatteryUpdate2007001.pkg was all that Spotlight turned up.
On my MacBoook my hard drive that I boot from is named Mort's MacBook. Yours may be similar I don't know. It is the drive you boot from. Mines shows in finder as the top level drive. The next level in column view. Then you find the System file and go from there.
If your not sure what you named your drive or which one it is click the apple in the upper left corner and then pick *About This Mac* You then should see *Startup Disk* and next to that the name is what you refer too when you look for the folder path I gave.
2. You recommended resetting the SMC. However, the info file you provided a link for says it shouldn't be "necessary except as a last resort in cases where a hardware failure of the power management system is suspected." Does that accurately describe the condition I reported? Also, the problems listed as possible reasons to reset the SMC don't include the one I posted about.
The reason I suggest resetting the SMC is that your changing one of the components that is controlled by the functions of the SMC. The battery is a big part of the system which the battery update changes. To get it to be sure to recognize the new bundle you reset the SMC. The instructions linked are not all inclusive but if you don't want to reset it that is up to you.
3. Similarly, re: the 1.2 Battery Update, it's not clear to me that any of the listed 'symptoms' of a faulty battery apply in my case -- unless what I reported indicates a "+low charge capacity/runtime+." Does it?
The battery update instructions are again not all inclusive. If you don't want to do it that is fine. All I know is you have a MacBook Pro update installed at the moment. You don't have a MacBook Pro. This suggestion of mine has helped many people with problems as reported by you. You do not have to do anything you don't want. That is your choice. Is your battery cutting off at 39% considered normal operating or capacity to you? I personally would call it a faulty battery, but thats just me.
What would be your definition of a faulty battery?
4. Apparently, you had a faulty battery which Apple replaced. I wasn't sure from your message whether you had other things going on that made it clear you had a faulty battery, or only the same symptoms I reported. Were there other power-related problems in your case, or only, as you wrote "the same thing as yours except mine cut off at 28%"?
I guess I misunderstood your original post, everything yours was doing mine was doing except mine cut off at 28% not 39%. I can only give advice on what you post. Are there other things happening that you didn't mention?
My idea of a faulty battery must be different than yours. If I don't get warnings I should and the battery does not work like it used to then that is a faulty battery in my opinion.
If your not comfortable with any of my suggestions contact Apple support and maybe they can help you. Possibly one of the other posters on here can give you different advice that you agree with. Never do anything advised in the forums unless you agree with it. -
My Macbook Air (circa ~2008, used) keeps shutting off without warning.
Hi, guys. I'm back again with the same issue. My aluminum Macbook Air (circa late 2008, used) keeps shutting off without warning. It comes back on as if nothing has happened, and I can even unplug as soon as I press the power button (twice, once to do...something, and the second to turn it back on). I have a brand new battery, so I know it's not that, nor is it an overheating issue. This is becoming very frustrating for me.
Before you recommend: I cannot possibly get to a Genius Bar appointment, because, unfortunately, Apple has no stores in West Virginia.
Thank you all for your help!

cant be monitor or fan, only possibility is onboard Ram / logic board or the SSD is going bad.
If the logic board / memory is bad,...the cost of which would make repair a bit counterintuitive to replace given the age of the unit.
Does it does this plugged in or only on battery? Does it hold a full charge. -

Hello, I am running Mac os 10.6.8. It is shutting down without warning when I walk away from the computer for about 5 minutes. It happened twice. It was not asleep, i had to turn the computer back on...Any ideas...

The next time the problem happens, note the date and time the problem occurred, then go to Applications/Utilities/Console and copy the log starting at the time of the crash. Paste the log in a reply. Please do not use a screen shot as they can be hard to read. If there are repeated runs of the same messages, please post only one run. Be selective about what you post and don’t post huge amounts. Make sure there is no personal data visible. Information learned from Linc Davis. -
Photoshop CS4 crashes and shuts down without warning.
I have installed the new CS4 upgrade, and I have disabled the GPU. I have just upgraded to 2MB of RAM. However, PSD CS4 will suddenly shut down without warning at unpredictable times - yesterday it happened when I zoomed in past 200% - today it happened when I hit Save For Web. Really annoying. Any ideas?
Thanks

IMac 8,1 Shuts Down without warning using FCE
Can somebody give me some advice on this?
My iMac 8,1 shuts down without warning it seems that it is when I am using FCE. Its as if there is a complete power loss, again no warning, just a black screen. It always starts up when I push the start button on the back of the machine.
This problem has only started since I moved into a new home.
It is plugged into a surge protector.
I am running the latest update of OS10.6
I have an external HD connected by 800 firewire. This is where the FCE project is saved along with all of the footage.
I have used this configuration for years without a problem.
The problem does not occur when I am using safari or itunes or mail.
The steps I have taken so far are:
reset the PRAM
reset the SMC
tried different outlets in the house in case of a wiring problem in the house
removed and reseated both 1GB RAM chips.
tried different configuartions of my external hard drives
If anybody please has any advice or has experienced the same problem please let me know. Thanks! Can somebody give me some advice on this?
