Laptop keeps spontaneously restarting

Whenever I activate the webcam (I've only used ichat, photobooth or evocam), approximately 60 seconds later the computer spontaneously restarts. It once completely froze up on me and another time it simply kernel paniced.
Any reason on why this is happening? Hardware problem? Software problem? Perhaps I should get it replaced?
(It's a brand new laptop bought sometime last week. Everything has been updated and everything seems to be running smoothly other than this one problem.)
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Just got my MBP yesterday and have spent today installing software. Now it keeps spontaneously restarting.
This first happened while I was trying to make a bootable backup to a FW hard drive using Synchronize Pro. It started with the backup ok but then just restarted after a couple of minutes. I tried again several times - also tried trashing Synchronize Pro's prefs - but it kept doing the same thing. One time, it looped for about 3 or 4 times continually starting up then immediately restarting before it finally completed the startup.
I ran the Apple Hardware Test which indicated no problems.
Thinking that it may be a problem with either the external HD or Synchronize Pro, I disconnected the HD and quit Sync Pro. I then tried to import some images from a CF card into Photo Mechanic but after about a minute the computer again spontaneously restarted.
Any suggestions, or should I just get it replaced?

  • 15" Macbook Pro (Mid-2010) keeps spontaneously restarting

    All,
I've looked around and found several threads addressing this problem, however, I have tried all the recommended fixes and still have nothing to show for it.  Any help would be appreciated. Let me know if there is any more information that you might need to help me out. I'm not too code savy, but I can figure most things out and find an answer when I don't know how (shoutout to youtube).
    Back story:
    - 4 Months ago, I upgraded to OSX Mavericks from the stock OS (I think Leopard).
    - Almost two weeks after I did this it began restarting randomly, wasn't often and happened when I was doing something unimportant (watching a TV show, movie, photo editing) so I didn't mind.
    - Two weeks after that, it happened quite often and became an issue almost to the point where I could barely login before it would restart.
    - Read around for solutions for about a week, tried those, things went back to normal for a week or so before the problems began again.
    - The next week it would restart then get stuck at the apple logo and 'loading wheel', couldn't even get to login.
    - Following week I went to the Genius Bar, they came to the conclusion that it was my HD and recommended that I get a new one.
    - Went online got a new one and installed it via iFixit guide. Also installed OSX Mavericks via USB install.
    - Problem was not solved continued to occur almost identical, nothing bad at first, then increasingly reoccuring.
This brings me to this article post.
I have only installed necessary updates from the Apple Store, Firefox, VLC player, as well as loaded my old files from my external to this one.

Thanks for your help again guys and gals!
    - Nick

Kernel panics usually indicate some hardware failure, possibly RAM (if you hear 'beep beep beep': have you had the memory chips out at all? Or has the computer suffered a sharp knock recently? If so, try try removing and reinserting the RAM in the slots), but more likely a hard disk is dying or corrupted. Worst case scenario is the logic board is kaput (lets hope not).
The most important thing I'd do in your case is make a clone of your entire system (google "Carbon Copy Cloner"). Partly cos this will help you test whether its the drive (see next line), but more importantly because it'll preserver your data.
After making the clone, try running your system off the clone for a week and see if the panics subside. If so, replace your internal hard disk.
EDIT: On second glance, I see the panic is being called from the graphics card. Is that always the case (examine older or subsequent reports) or just in this one?

  • Laptop keeps on rebooting after windows update configuration failure due to low disk space.

    Dear all,
My laptop keeps on restarting it self due to it cannot configure the windows update. I had tried all the solutions online including boot into safe mode, however none of this works as it keeps on going back to the windows configuration screen. I had no windows
installation disc, i tried system repair and system restore, both also not working.
I know where my problems is, it is that I had turn on the quota management system in my c drive. Thus, it had limited my disk space. I suspect that the configuration failure is due to not enough disk space.
I am here to ask, anywhere i can start my windows without the update configuration step, or how did i turn off my quota management system without getting into the windows. I tried safe mode, it  still goes to the windows configuration screen and reboots
    again.
    Please help, thanks.

    Hi,
You can access Advanced Boot Options by turning on your computer and pressing the F8 key before Windows starts.
Then choose system restore to go back to a previous status if you have a restore point.

  • My Toshiba laptop keeps restarting.

    Hello,
    Let me explain.
This problem only happens when I go over to my dad's house. I'll be able to log in and open programs, but not shortly after, my icons on my desktop turns white. A few seconds after, it reboots again. I've tried everything. Even disabled the auto-reboot after crash, and all that does is freeze a blue screen. (Which sometimes pop up when I take the laptop off of sleep mode. Though, the real case is not a blue screen or a crash. It just restarts. And this is the weird part, when I go over to my mom's, the laptop MAGICALY runs normal as if nothing happened?! But for some reason it has problems at my dad's house. I figured it was the networking (Like wifi) because when I start windows with non-networking safe mode, it works. But starting safe mode with networking makes the laptop restart again. And get this, the other day at my dads, my computer kept restarting, but then the internet stopped working and I saw that my laptop wasn't restarting anymore. THEN AS SOON as the internet comes back on, it restarts! I tried everything but honestly, I think the laptop doesn't take certain wifis????This been happening for a month. I don't get how it'll work normal in another house but goes to reboot paradise on another house.
    Thank you for reading.
    -Jaz

Can you check the laptop's full model and part numbers from the label on the bottom? Don't include the serial number.

  • Laptop keeps restarting since Windows 10 install

Ever since updating to Windows 10 few days ago my laptop is randomly restarting itself.  It doesn't matter if it is on battery or plugged in.  Sometimes it will restart 2 or 3 times back to back.  Other times it may go a couple of hours in between restarts. It is also sometimes not connecting to the wireless internet or stating that their are no wireless networks. I then have to restart the laptop to get it to recognize the home network and connect. Again, not a problem pre Windows 10 upgrade. I ran the battery diagnostic and it said it was ok.  I haven't even had the computer 1 year, any suggestions of how to stop this?  I use the computer for work and this problem is making it very difficult.  Thank you!

Hi, I have upgraded my HP envy Touchsmart 15" (15-j013ea) to windows 10 as well and am having a similar issue to you. Initially the touchscreen was working well following upgrade from 8.1 to 10. I then did a clean install of 10 onto a new SSD.  The touchscreen is not showing up under HID devices in device manager, but seems to be working as a mouse. I can touch the screen to move the cursor, double click, but scrolling does not work properly. Basically it thinks it's a mouse! Like you - windows says "no pen or touch input available" I have trawled the web to try and find decent drivers, but to no avail. Come on HP - sort yourselves out. These laptops are designed for touchsceen and some working drivers would be greatly appreciated. Matthew

  • New Macbook spontaneous restart

Hi all, I have a month old Macbook pro that has been spontaneously restarting with an error. It doesn't matter what I am doing on it; it will restart at any point in time randomly. I took it to the genius bar and they said the only restart they found was for software updates. In order to diagnose, they would need to keep it for a few days ( My job is all computer based, going to be difficult without a computer for a few days). I took it back home to see if the problem stopped- It stopped for a week, then yesterday I had three restarts. I am wondering if my issue is related to anything I have plugged in. I have a blue tooth mouse, a usb keyboard, and a second screen. I have tried the energy saver default restoration, no luck. Below are two error logs. Any thoughts before I have to leave it at the store?

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Ipod classic isn't recognized by the computer & keeps on restarting

    hii
I am experiencing very strange problem. My apple ipod classic isn't recognized by my computer nor it formats or restore & keeps on restarting on it's own when tried
to open any application.it also shows that there is 0kb free & 0kb used.
    please help
    highly obliged

I have the exact problem. My ipod (and now there's two of them!) used to work fine, sync, etc. with this computer. A while back, it stopped recognizing the ipod. I tried all the stuff (the 5r's), checked my usb ports (work with all other devices), different cables, etc. Finally, I got another ipod. Now I've got two perfectly good ipod classics that I can't get music on or off of. grr.
I guess it's something in my computer set up (which is still strange, since, to my knowledge nothing has really changed from when it used to work)...but it my laptop also won't recognize either ipod. so that's two computers that I'll have to take to some expert if I can't figure this out. frustrating!

  • Why does this mavericks start on its own? even after downloading GFX card status it keeps on restarting. Fix it Apple. I'm going Banana.

The laptop says kernel error, but after downloading GFX card status the laptop keeps on getting restarted. Oh why did i buy a macbook?

Either your Mac is broken, or you have something installed which isn't compatible. Hard to tell without the kernel panic log.

  • What do I do if my laptop keeps saying checking media fail and it keeps saying no bootable device

I need help because my laptop keeps saying checking media failed and then it says no bootable device please restart system I don't get it

checking media failed and then it says no bootable device
This is possible HDD failure. Could be that the Hard Drive is no longer working.

  • Macbookpro Keeps Randomly Restarting

    My Computer's Details - http://pastie.org/private/u9w6mgnlzbafxcil31l1w
Hello, I recently have been on my MacBook Pro and two nights ago while I was closing a application my computer randomly restarted and I thought that it was kinda weird while it was restarting it asked for my password, I typed it in and it restarted again before my computer even fully loaded. Then when I woke up the next morning I opened my laptop and it restarted and said "Your Computer Restarted because of a problem" so it's been restarting the whole day yesterday and today, and another thing that makes it restart is when I plug my Iphone 4s into it. Here is the message
"Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue starting up."
once it opens it restarts again and then I get this once it opened fully - http://pastie.org/private/edlnqjczaw0oaptamtn3g
If anyone knows the problem please help me it is getting very annoying.

    Hello!
What's happening to your Mac is called "kernel panics"
They can have many causes. Often they're caused by connected peripherals. If you have any connected, including external display, disconnect them. See what happens with a barebones MacBook Pro with other words.
Secondly, you have these non-original kexts/drivers. If we manage to get you back into your OS X again, you must consider deleting the ones below:
    com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard 5.9.1
    com.microsoft.driver.MicrosoftMouseUSB 8.2
    com.microsoft.driver.MicrosoftMouse 8.2
    com.sophos.nke.swi 9.2.50
They can be found at: "/library/extensions"
If your issues aren't solved by disconnecting peripherals, here's my advise. It's a bit lengthy but might just save your day:
It will take you about 45 minutes or less to do these, depending on how bad the problem on your Mac is as well as your internet-connection speed.
The goal here is to boot your Mac to the so-called Internet Recovery partition where you’ll have a chance to repair the disk and the disk permissions using the Disk Utility and Password Utility. This might solve your issue and even if it doesn’t- it’s still a decent maintenance step to perform. These steps won’t erase your data or reinstall your Mac in any way if you follow instructions carefully. Make a back-up anyway.
    Here’s how:
1/ Make sure your computer is completely shut down.
2/ You’ll have to be quick next: Press the Mac’s power button. As soon as you either hear the loud chime, or see the display light up - usually after a second or 2 - on your keyboard press [alt] + [cmd] + [r] Keep these keys on your keyboard pressed until you see a spinning globe with the text “starting Internet Recovery” You might have to connect to your Wi-Fi network before you can continue here.
After a few minutes, you’ll be presented with a Utilities screen. This is the Internet Recovery partition. If this step is already giving you problems, try using a USB-keyboard. It doesn’t have to be an Apple-keyboard. If you have a Windows-tailored keyboard laying around, use the “Windows-flag” key in stead of the [cmd]-key and it should also work.
3/ Choose Disk Utility and click [continue]
Disk Utility will display your computer’s harddrive in the left column. The default name for it is “Macintosh HD” and is usually the second one from the top. Click on it and click on the [verify disk] button. This will check your “Macintosh HD” harddrive partition for errors. If found, click [repair disk] unless you have a Fusion drive in your Mac and it says [fix] instead of [repair disk] please tell us before you continue! For a screenshot of what I mean, check this article from Apple: http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202574
4/ Once done with the verifying or repairing of your “Macintosh HD” click [repair disk permissions]
This will check your partition for permissions errors. A common myth about this feature is that it will fix all permissions issues on your Mac, which is not true, but it will fix most systemwide issues. Also, here is a list of error messages that you can safely ignore if they pop up:
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203172
5/ Lastly we shall do a permissions/Access Control List repair on specifically your user’s home folder with a somewhat hidden tool in the Recovery partition. Close Disk Utility and find the menu called “utilities” in the top left corner of your computer’s display. It’s in between the menus “edit” and “window” Don’t be confused with the menu called “os x utilities”
Choose Terminal. A somewhat old-fashioned looking window will pop up, waiting for a text command from you. This is the Terminal.
After the # type: resetpassword and press return. Note that there is no space between ‘reset’ and ‘password’
What you’ll see next is an rectangular window that gives you the option to reset passwords. We are not going to that, however. Instead, click on “Macintosh HD” at the top. In the pull-down menu below that, choose your user's accountname. Skip all the rest and at the very bottom click the [reset]-button.
A spinning gear will appear and may stay on for a second or several minutes. It’s hard to predict exactly how long.
If you have multiple users on your Mac, I advise you to repeat this step for all your users.
We’re ready to reboot your Mac now. Click on the Apple Menu and choose “startup disk” Choose to boot from “Macintosh HD” Please let us know if this solved your issue, or if the steps above did not work, or could not be performed for some reason.

  • How can I reformat my Mac Book Pro without using disc utility? My laptop keeps crashing, and needs to have everything reinstalled, but disc utility will no longer open, saying it 'quit unexpectedly'. I'm running Mac OS X10.6.8. I've lost install CD.

My laptop keeps crashing. This seems to happen only when it's streaming from sites such as Netflix, YouTube or Spotify.
Also, it stopped being able to run iTunes, and can't download Yosemite.
I want to wipe it and reinstall everything - I've already done a full back up.
The problem is disc utility will no longer open, saying it 'quit unexpectedly':
I'm running Mac OS X10.6.8 and I've lost install CD.
I have no idea what to do, but need to get this sorted as quickly as possible as I need my laptop for work.

Even if you could open Disk Utility you can't reformat a disk while you are booted from it. You will have to use the install CD. Ring the Apple Online Store at the number given at bottom left of this page and give them the serial number of your Mac. You should be able to get the Snow Leopard install disks for a nominal fee.

  • My windows 7 laptop keeps on turning up a BSOD- help!

I have a Dell Inspiron n5110 with Windows 7 Ultimate Installed. I've had the laptop close to 2 years now.
For the past week, it has been repeatedly turning up a blue screen with Kernel Data Inpage Error, code 0x0000007A.
One or twice it has also turned up the code 0x000000F4 and 'a process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated'.
This happens randomly every time I use my laptop. I restart, only to have it crash again. I ran disk check on all my drives and also checked my RAM, but no errors have turned up. I also ran a full antivirus scan and had no issues.
Please guide me as to what I should do. I have university access to the Microsoft store so I can reinstall my OS (or windows 8) if that would solve the problem.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

    Answer from previous discussion (Meghmala):
The error code KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR STOP: 0x0000007Astates that the requested page of kernel data from the paging file could not be read into memory. It appears that
there are some issues with the hard disk.
Use check disk command for any errors on hard disk -
Warning: Microsoft does not recommend interrupting the CHKDSK process. Microsoft does not guarantee the integrity of the disk if the CHKDSK program is interrupted.
For safety you can back up your data before using the check disk command.
Use the check disk commands as follows:
     1. Click Start.
     2. In search window type 'cmd' and ENTER. Right click and select 'Run as administrator'.
     3. Type at the command prompt CHKDSK /P and press ENTER to scan the disk.
     4. Then type CHKDSK C: /F /R and press ENTER to repair corrupt sectors, if there are any.
NOTE: The root drive has to be C: and the command may schedule a task at the system startup, if it does, then press Y to schedule a task and restart the computer to perform chkdsk.
Once chkdsk completes, boot to the desktop and then check.
