Laptop locking up.

My Toshiba Sattelite A505-S6980 locks up intermittently for no reason that I can see.

There's always a reason why they lock up.  Sometimes it just isn't apparent what that reason is.
First question, what version of WIndows?   Have you installed all of the Windows Updates and Service Packs?  Have you run chkdsk/r lately?  Open a command prompt and type  chkdsk/r then hit enter.  Anser Y when it asks if you want to run it the next time you start windows, then reboot the laptop.  This will take anywhere from 15 minutes to a couple of hours depending on what it finds that needs to be corrected.
To check the ram you need to download the Memtest CD Iso, create the CD using the Burn From Image option, then boot to it and allow it to run through a minimum of 3 complete passes.  If it shows ANY errors whatsoever then you have defective ram.
To test the hard drive determine what brand of hard drive you have.  You can check the Bios/Setup to find out or run SIW or Belarc Advisor.  Go to that manufacturer's support site and download their Self Booting Diagnostic CD ISO image, create the CD using the Burn From Image option (see http://iso.snoekonline.com/iso.htm for more information on doing this), then boot to it and run the most exhaustive tests available.  If you have a Toshiba or a Hitachi hard drive you will NOT be able to test it as the Hitachi DFT will not run on the Intel ICH9M chipset in your system and Toshiba won't supply a diagnostic test to the public for their drives (which is why I avoid them like the plague).
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • Firefox 5 on my Windows 7 64 bit laptop locks up. Have not be able to get on the internet for days.

I have used Firefox for 3 years on all my computers. However, Firefox 5 on my Windows 7 64-bit laptop locks up. I want to uninstall it and use an earlier version. Also, the "key' in the address bar to 'remember the password' for this site will NOT behave! No matter what I do, it continues to crop up. I dislike Firefox 5 because it is causing me delays, using up my time with constant problems. What previous version do you recommend I use?

  • My laptop locked after I don't use it for several minutes.

    Hi everyone,
I have a really troublesome problem.
My laptop is locked after I don't use it for several minutes.
When I say locked, I mean it turns to where shows my account name and below it says locked.
At first, I think it is cause by the Auto-lock .cuz I am really annoyed by it, I uninstalled it.
However it still does not work.
Could anyone tell me what the problem is on earth?
Perhaps it is just because I am really not familiar with my new laptop.
    Solved!

That's a power setting that determines how long before it enters the screen saver, sleep more, or even hibernation mode. You can change either the requirement of a password (somewhere in the screen saver section of Windows) or the duration before it enters those modes (you should be able to set that with the Lenovo Power Center thing). Of course, doing either is a security risk, but that's up to you as to how much security or comfort you want.

  • Laptops locking down

I have a Satellite A135 S4527 laptop that has suddenly started to go to lock up on it's own ,please some one help me

Ok I think I can close this. It appears to work now. I dont really know why we had the initial issues. Managed user accounts we created on the lab workstations would not obey the web restrictions we set up. I even tried on my mac mini (10.8.4) and created a new managed account with the same restrictions, logged in and the web restrictions would not work; I could browse everywhere.
Yesterday at home with my mac mini (I take it back and forth to work) just for grins I logged in as the managed user. The web restrictions worked. Took the mac mini back to work this morning and tried and the web restrictions worked on the managed account worked.
Maybe all we needed to do is reboot? The  only thing I can think of is there is some daemon that only starts on boot if there are existing managed accounts. Dunno.

  • Laptop locks up after installing wrt600n

I have a Sony laptop with builtin wireless g. I recently upgraded my wrt54n wireless to the new wrt600n wireless router. It has not been a pleasant experience. I am finally connected, some of the time. The main problem is when the laptop comes out of hibernation, the system is locked up. Sometimes I can move the mouse other times not. I end up having to reboot everytime. The connection sometimes is lost. Now at times this could be issues with Time Warner but I never had these connectivity issues with the 54n. I have bought the wireless n card but have not opened it yet. I want to keep this router but not if I have to reboot everytime it comes out of hibernation.
Has anyone else encounter this situation and how did it get resolved?
Is there anyone from Linksys who monitors these discussions?

  • HP Laptop Locked Microsoft Password Problems

OMG how many bours spent trying to get somewhere anywhere where I could get heard by anyone that can help me with this problem. SHAME ON YOU MICROSOFT for making it so bloody hard and frustrating for people to use their devices due to the inept way that your product works. I really think you DO need to spend your time a lot better and look at your competitors for some inspiration so people/consumers can use your product easily and effectively without all of the headaches.
I recently purchased a Hp Laptop for my birthday and came home so excited to use it. Well you can imagine my surprise after using it and it shutting down that the next time I go to use it I cannot get in as the password I was using kept telling me that I had it incorrect and to try again. Well thanks MICROSOFT I spent my whole birthday trying to get it unlocked with no success. CONTACT MICROSOFT we'll forgive me for holding my sides in a fit of laughter because if you follow all the steps you just keep getting redirected to FORGOT MY PASSWORD which is the same bloody problems as it doesn't recognise your password so whoever you paid to make an ant trail of deflection than you definitely got your monies worth. I tried chatting online to MICROSOFT SUPPORT STAFF Ha,Ha after waiting for I can't remember how long we'll guess who I ended up talking with YES YOU ARE CORRECT MY BLOODY SELF.
If anybody is remotely interested in helping this situation I would GREATLY APPRECIATE it.

I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP ENVY Notebook and a forgotten Microsoft Password. Here is a link to help you recover your account. You could look at this document on how to Refresh Windows. 8. It gives you the option to Refresh Windows 8 when you cannot get to the desktop. Please read all the documentation before starting. Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues. Hope this is a help. Please let me know how this goes. Thanks.

  • Laptop locked up--what to do?

I have a MacBook Air laptop from mid-2012.
It has worked wonderfully since the first day--until today.  When I raised it from sleep. I got the login screen.  When I started typing in the password field, I noticed that in the right corner of the pw field, there was a grey up arrow and a grey arrow pointing to the left.   When I hit enter after putting in my password, the field shook from right to left to indicate that it wasn't accepting the password.
I knew the pw was correct, but after several tries it still wouldn't accept it.   Then I did something where it changed the user name, and turned into a different desktop.   It still would not take my password, even as I observed the password hint it supplied me with.
I am sure those two grey arrows in the password field have something to do with the problem.  Anyone have any idea what's going here and how to fix it?
    Thanks.

I failed to say it locks up while trying to boot up!!see yesterdays post. It works normally when the battery pack is removed and connected directly to the mains. Is this a fault in the battery pack or software fault in windows 7 ?

  • Laptop locks up for 20 seconds each 2 to 3 minutes

During the past 2 days I installed about 20+ updates for Windows 8.1 and Office 2007 and also started using One Drive.  Ever since then my computer locks up for 10 to 30 seconds, mainly for internet related tasks, and then resumes for a few more
minutes before repeating the lock up.  Do I need to uninstall all 20+ updates or has one or a few been reported to have caused these problems?

    Hi,
It's a little confused about "Ever since then my computer locks up for 10 to 30 seconds, mainly for internet related tasks"?
Did you give us a screenshot? Did you mean it freeze when browsing the Internet Explorer?
    If yes, try this:
Windows 8.1, Windows 8 or Windows 7 hangs or freezes("My computer hangs or freezes when browsing in Internet Explorer" section)

  • Dead screen, laptop locked in Safe Mode with no HDMI driver for external monitor

    Hi,
Background: This is a Windows 8 pre-loaded notebook, I have updated to 8.1 (some months ago) via the Store.
I recently had the dead screen that appears quite common with HP notebooks.
I connected an external monitor, notebook was fully functional.
Backed up all contents, then updated graphics driver, no improvement.
Then went into msconfig and forced boot into safe mode...
Now, I cannot control the notebook at all because I can't see anything.  At this point I am just trying to get control of the notebook so I can wipe it, and sell it to a repair place, or as a notebook that works fine with a docking station or external monitor.
    Questions I have:
    1. WITHOUT SEEING THE SCREEN (dead) is there any way to get it to boot back to Windows Normal mode, or any other HDMI-driver enabled mode?
    2. As an alternative is there any way I can get it to boot from a USB to any operating system so I can wipe the HDD and start again?
    3. Would (2) even work if I need a HDMI driver to operate the notebook - would it be possible to reinstall an OS with a dead screen, because I would need to be able to run an external monitor?
    4. How do I find my Windows Product Key without access to the notebook (can HP help here, from my notebook serial #)?
    5. Any way to perhaps mount the HDD externally in order to manually edit the boot config to return it to Windows Normal booting?
Grateful for your comments.  Remember my objective is NOT TO FIX IT, just to get it to drive an external monitor again so I can part with this notebook with some kind of financial return.
    Dom

    Hi @Dom_Oz ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
It is a terrific place to find answers.
For you to have the best experience in the HP forum I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide Learn How to Post and More
I see that your display quit and you connected an external monitor and it was functioning well.  You backed up all your data and updated graphic drivers but there was no improvement.  You booted into safe mode and now both screens are blank.
Since both screens are blank when you booted into safe mode, I would try a Performing a Hard Reset or Forced Reset.
to try and bring back the external monitor.
If that does not work, can could try to do a recovery Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8)
The Windows product key is tattooed in the bios and is hidden, but if you do a recovery it should automatically get picked up.
Yes you can try booting to an OS on a USB stick to wipe the hard drive.
Yes you can remove the hard drive and install it in an external case and then edit as you wish or format  from there.
If you edit the boot config and manage to have Windows reboot, I would do a factory recovery, this will  format the drive and return back to its original condition.
    I hope this helps.
