Laptop loses power and won't boot

I have an Aspire V5-573G running Windows 10 Home 64bit, but I experienced the same problem while running Windows 8.1 Home 64bit.
I leave the PC on or off, come back a few hours later. The power indicator light don't shine if left off, shine orange if left on. The charging indicator lights blue if charging, else not.
I press the power button, both lights turn off and it does not boot.
I tried holding the power button down for 30 seconds, disconnect and reconnect the power adaptor, tap the power button, etc. The laptop seems dead.
I open up the laptop and disconnect the battery and reconnect it instantly. The laptop boots.
This issue repeats itself every time and it does not matter whether I have it connected to the power adaptor, leave it on or off, sleep mode or awake.
Since the lights do shine until I press the power button to wake/boot it up, I'm assuming it cease to respond once I do press the power button.
Help?

After additional tests I've noticed the following:
The hold-power-button-for-30-seconds trick works if, and only if, the battery is disconnected. When the laptop loses power as described in the original post, and the battery has been disconnected, I disconnect the power adaptor, hold the power button for 30 seconds, connect the adaptor and the laptop boots.
If the battery is connected, this trick does not work.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
I'm not entirely sure I follow you here, home sharing comes with iTunes 10.2, so far as I am aware even iTunes 10.6.1 only requires OS X 10.5.8 or better. On that basis I'm not sure why you think you have a problem.

    Hey KatInTheHat2,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Sounds like it might be a screen issue or a computer issue. This first article discusses what to do if your Mac won't turn on.

  • IMac G5 Power PC won't boot past the grey apple and pinwheel

After everything froze and having to shut down (holding the power button), it won't boot past the grey apple and pinwheel. After a few seconds, the fans speed up and then nothing else.
*it won't boot into safe mode (holding shift)
*booting to OS on DVD works but then freezes after select language and hit "continue"
*disk utility shows the actual hard drive name but no disk image/partition is listed for me to repair or change
*running the system hardware diagnostic CD returns a list of "passed" for all hardware
I did have the logic board replaced during the extended warranty period a few years back and have not had any issues at all since.
    Any thoughts, suggestions, tricks/tips?

Perfect diagnosis. I replaced the HD and reinstalled the OS. Back in business! Thanks!

  • G4 Power Mac won't boot past gray screen

I have a mirror door g4 power pc that had been having some issues with not turning on, and after testing the power supply, it failed miserably. We placed a refurbished power supply in it from a company in New York and the computer was working wonderfully. I went on a cruise last week and went to turn the computer on for the first time in a week and a few days. The CPU turns on, the unit chimes, the fan turns on and the computer starts to boot up, but it won't boot past the gray apple logo screen.
Actually, the first few attempts to boot it resulted in a blue screen with gaint apple logo and spinner; it wouldn't advance further. After several restarts and resets, I got it to come up into the normal gray screen. On several attempts it wouldn't boot further than this. On two occasions now though, it has moved past the gray screen to normal operation (it takes about an hour for it to get to that point though) but with some kind of errors. I get the side bar, but the gray panel on to with "file" ect is gone and my HD icon never comes up. The icons on the sidebar do not respond when clicked.
The computer will not boot from the OS X disc.
What's going on, hard drive? Virus? Something else?

You likely have hard drive directory issues or worse.
Virus is just a hopeful whimsy.
    No virus.
I hope that you have a backup of your data.
Try a Safe Mode boot. This forces system repair of the directory (if possible).
Hold Shift while starting to enter Safe mode. Be patient, as it can take several minutes to complete.
Failure to boot to the OS X disc is not good. A severely damaged drive can prevent boot while connected.
Disconnect your boot drive and try booting to the OS X disc.

  • My 2 months old iPhone 5 just died and won't boot up, My 2 months old iPhone 5 just died and won't boot up

I purchased iPhone 5 for Virgin Mobile USA 2 months ago.  This morning while checking weather app it just died.  The phone has no water damage and was never dropped.  I tried every single trick that I know and I could research online to bring it back but no success:
I left it charging for about 3 hours, and tried to boot it up but nothing.  I tried to hold power and home button for 30 sec then just power then just home buttons but nothing.  I tried to toggle the mute/vibe button 2, 3, 4 times and hold home and power button but nothing again.  The only thing I didn't try is to connect it to a computer with iTunes since I'm on vacation and didn't bring my laptop with me.  Basically by now I just gave up on it.  Does anybody know any other ways that I don't list above?  Will Apple Store replace it for a new one right on the spot or will I have to wait for them to send me one?  How does that work?  Would they have a brand new Virgin Mobile USA iPhone in the store?

Nothing works Tonefox believe me.  It doesn't take apple genius to hold one button or the other or both at once until the logo appears.  The phone is dead! If you know something no one else knows on this apple forum please share it, otherwise don't waist my time.

  • IMac shut down suddenly and won't boot back up

This morning my iMac shut down suddenly.  All I had open was Google Chrome and I was just on Facebook and that's it.  When I tried to boot it back up, it wouldn't load past the startup sound, wherein it would appear to shut back down,or at the very least the screen would go black (my mouse has lights that stay on when the computer is on, and the light kept going on and off while the screen remained black).  This was the case for at least a half hour until it suddenly booted itself back up all on its own.  I had it on throughout the day, just browsing the internet and watching Youtube. It shut itself down twice during the day, and both times it restarted on its own right away after showing me a grey screen with the Apple logo and a progress bar.  Now it just shut itself down again and it won't make it past the progress bar screen - if it even makes it that far, sometimes it shuts off right after it makes the startup sound.  It keeps trying to boot up on its own over and over again, but it keeps shutting down right away.  All the fixes I've searched for so far require a computer that actually boots up all the way so I don't think I could run any reports if I tried!
I'm running the latest version of Yosemite (10.10.2?).
    Model number A1311
Not entirely sure what specs are useful to know so I'm just gonna write some of what's on the box it came in:
    3.2 GHz Intel i3 processor, 4MBshared level 3 cache
    4GB of 1333MHz DDR SDRAM
    1TB serial ATA hard drive
ATI Radeon HD 5670 graphics processor with 512 MB of GDDR3 memory
Bought it around fall of 2010.  Not sure if it's worth trying to get it fixed (I live nowhere near an Apple store) or if I should just get a new computer, but I would like to know what's wrong, if possible.

Try to boot into the Recover Partition by holding down the Command + R keys on startup. If it still won't boot then the HD has probably crashed. The is likely a AASP in your area, you can locate one by clicking AASP Locator, take it to one to be professional diagnosed. If it's only the HD, assuming you have been backing up, restoring to a new HD is pretty simple.

  • My mac mini sudenly frozed and won't boot in again.

while i surf the net with safari, safari just close itself and the screen was dim with a message to restart . after i do restart my mac mini it can't log in to os and fail to install new os from cd. i did test hardware and it error 4MEM/1/40000000 . is it because my kingston ram that i just replace 1 month ago? i think it just works....

I am having a similar issue to the original post! However, I have not upgraded my RAM. I've only had my Mac Mini for 2 months. I have the dual 512MB RAM sticks which came with the Mac Mini from Apple. The case has never been opened.
My system won't boot into the Mac OS GUI. I just get dumped to the Darwin prompts. I can't successfully re-install the OS from DVD/CD. I run the Apple Hardware Tests from disk and get "4MEM/1/40000000".
I noticed this when I tried to login to my machine on 6May07.
Does anyone know if the brick and mortar Apple Stores can replace the memory under warranty on the spot? (The closest Apple Store to me is about a 3 hour drive). I hate calling the Apple hotline.

  • Power Mac won't boot up

Hi, Folks! I've had this Mac Pro 2.8GHz since 2008 and rarely had a problem. Last night, the clock was wrong (for the first time ever); it said it was a few hours later than it was. And I couldn't reset it in System Preferences. I re-booted and the cycle began:
-I get the grey screen, with the Apple and the spinning wheel. This lasts for about a minute
-The screen goes black, the CPU winds down and it starts up again.
-I get the grey screen, with the Apple and the spinning wheel. This lasts for about a minute
-The screen goes black, and so on...
It sounds like it's pushing a rock up a hill and instead of reaching the top, it suddenly falls off the side and has to be pushed up again--only to fall off again. The fans are working and I hear the usual start-up noises--but not much else.
I've booted from the Install Disk and run Disk Utility (it repaired some things, but to no avail). I've run a Hardware Test, which it passed. I've zapped the NVRAM. No luck.
I've run out of options. Any suggestions?
(BTW, I'm in Brooklyn and therefore got hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. However, we never lost power--and I actually had my computer and power strip off during the worst of it. What happened to me last night was a good two days after the storm had passed.)
    Thanks!

The "crunching" is more likely the stepping motor in the hard drive, the processor should be silent.  And since you can boot from the DVD then the logic board should not be an issue.  Sounds an awful lot like a bad hard drive.  Do you have more than one hard drive in the Mac Pro?  If so, can you install a bootable copy of the Mac OS X on a second drive and try starting from that drive?
If not, then it seems like the options are to buy another hard drive to install and install the operating system on, or take the Mac to an Apple store and have the techs run some of their diagnostics to see if it isn't a bad hard drive.  They have much better diagnostics than the AHT...but getting into the City is pretty iffy right now.  An option is also to order an external drive and install Mac OS X on it, make that the startup disk, and see how it works.
I would guess the order of options by cost would be:
    1.  Apple store for testing
    2.  New internal hard drive
    3.  External hard drive.
I have gotten three eternal drives from OWC for my Macs and been really pleased...cost is reasonable, around $200 for 2 TB, and they are compatible.  OWC also has internal drives so you can check and see what they cost.

  • Power Mac won't boot, a few issues....

My PowerMac was sitting dormant for about 2 years when I decided to get it going. I hauled out the 10.3 install discs a new 80 GB hd and got to work. The cd's booted good and when I got to the installer the screen was black, white and grainy. I thought nothing of it although I could barley read it.
When Mac OS X 10.3 was installed It booted fine and I went into the control panel and it was set to 258 (or so) colors, but was still black, white and grainy.
I reset the NVRAM and PRAM and now the mac goes to the apple logo and turns into a circle with a cross through it. It won't safe boot X, you can't force X to start and cd's won't boot.
The mac has a 128MB, 256MB and 256MB ram chip leaving one ram bank unused.
Anyone have a clue whats wrong?

Is this the first time you've installed OS 10.3 on your B&W G3? I was wondering if you had previously updated the firmware to version 1.1? Did you use the black, universal/retail version "Panther" disks, and not another Mac's grey Restore disk? Additionally, if your B&W G3 has the first revision motherboard, the onboard IDE controller will have problems with an 80 GB hard drive. You can verify which motherboard you have, by scrolling down this article to the section entitled "Revised IDE Controller Chip." An 80 GB drive can be used in a Rev. 1 B&W G3, if it's connected to a Mac-compatible Ultra ATA-133 controller PCI card. They're getting harder to find, as the industry has moved to SATA drives. You might also want to remove and reinstall the graphics card and SDRAM cards from their slots, to create a fresh connection. Over time (and depending on the ambient temperature range where a computer is stored), oxidization can form on the gold-plated contacts and cause problems. I use a soft white eraser and gently scrub the gold-plated pins on the cards, to restore a bright appearance. Care must be taken to prevent electrostatic discharge damage when handling these components, and any small residual rubber shavings from the eraser should be blown off before reassembly.

  • MSI GE70 Laptop will start but won't boot

    Hello
I've had my GE70 for almost two and a half years now and it has recently started to show a few problems.
A couple weeks ago the laptop started to freeze whenever I moved it too abruptly, particularly when holding/pressing the case near where the HDD is installed.
Now, I took it on a trip with me, and when I tried to turn it on, the fan would spin, the CD/DVD drive would run, and the power light would also turn on, but it wouldn't boot (won't even get to BIOS, just a black screen). The laptop doesn't boot because capslock/numlock lights do not turn on. The HDD seems to be working because its light blinks once as soon as I try to turn it on.
    I've tried:
    1. Swapping memory card slots
    2. Removing the memory cards and turning on (motherboard does not beep, is that a signal that something's wrong with the motherboard?)
    3. Reseting the EC
However, nothing seems to work. Can't send it to a MSI repair shop because I am currently living in Brazil and apparently there's no MSI official repairer here.
Any ideas on how to solve the problem?
    Thanks!

Try to remove all the storage devices and see if you can enter the BIOS menu.
If not, then it's likely that sending it to the service center will be your only hope.

  • Satellite Pro 6100: Can't enter BIOS and won't boot up

I've got a Satellite pro 6100 notebook, en I was trying to make it boot from an external USB HD. When I enabled the second hard disk option in the BIOS it stopped booting all together en I can't even enter the BIOS Setup anymore. All I get is the "TOSHIBA in touch with tomorrow" screen with the icons to select the preferred boot method manually after that it's just blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner.
Holding down the ESC or F8 key before powering on usually results in fast beeping sounds.
Holding the tilde (~) key before powering on results in the screen remaining blank (not even the toshiba splash screen appears) and slow beepings sounds.
Appart from that I can't really make her do anything at all.
I tried resetting the BIOS by disconnecting the CMOS/RTC battery (hoewever it's called) from the motherboard for a while, with no results.
Powering on without the internal HD results in a blank screen with an "IDE #0 ERROR".
I can always shutdown by holding down the power button, don't bother about the external HD, it gone I don't even want that to work anymore.
    Suggestions?

    Thanks for helping me out,
With this laptop I only use both hard disks internally (not both at the same time ofcourse). As long as I can't boot normally or can't get into the BIOS I won't bother using USB.
About USB Booting: I believe the newest BIOS have USB booting built-in, and you can specify it in the boot order menu, or so I read. My BIOS is obviously not able to do this.
Back to the problem: what CAN I do in this situation:
ESC to get into the BIOS :: doesn't work
F8 to specify boot order :: doesn't work
Holding down the tilde (~) key before power-up :: beeping, this is the BIOS update mode right?
    I found this thread:
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=1402&tstart=306
    Sounds familiar.
So I guess I'll try a BIOS update, I found information about that on the Toshiba site, the only problem is that I don't have a floppy disk drive, but it should be possible with a CD too, any suggestions are welcome.
And could anybody tell me something about that resume mode (if you think that's relevant).
    Thanks.

  • [SOLVED] System froze and won't boot.

When I pluged in my power adapter on my laptop my entire system froze and forced me to cut the power.
Now when I try to boot it I get several errors about mounting and udev and more which I can't catch in the speed. Then it enters a long loop of printing
systemd[1]: Failed to start Journal Service.
    And finally prints:
systemd[1]: Failed to start Journal Service.
systemd[1]: Failed to start Emergency Shell.
systemd[1]: Dependency failed for Emergency Mode.
Now only thing I can do is reboot, with the same result. I have no clue what to do so now I reach out for help here.
    Thanks in advance.

    Indeed this was the cause.
Anyway I've manage to solve it, here is the steps:
    1) Boot a live cd
    2) Set up and enter a chroot according to https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=154625
    3) Disable [testing] from /etc/pacman.conf
    4) Run:
    pacman -Syyf util-linux
    pacman -Syyf linux linux-headers
I got som wierd errors at first which was gone after reinstalled util-linux.
And to get rid of the cause:
    pacman -R laptop-mode-tools
    5) Although this did not really work out so I did:
    mkinitcpio -p linux
    6) Exit chroot and reboot.
Maybe not all of those cammands are needed but that's how I solved my problem(s).
