Laptop memory compatibility

Hi, Just received 2GB DDR3 PC3-8500 1066MHz SODIMM 204-Pin Laptop Memory Module (bought second hand on eBay). Have tried it in 3 different laptops - HP Probook 6550b, Lenovo T400S, Lenovo SL510 - same result each time = blank screen, no boot, no message.  The Probook gave 3 blinks on caps lock and num lock, which according to HP website means Memory - Module error not functional.  Crucial says my Probook takes DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz. Have I bought the wrong memory or is it duff ?.  Thanks.

Hi redart,
I am sorry for the issues you are experiencing with the RAM. What is the full part number on the module? This would read something like CT25664BF160B.16F, etc. This would help us determine if their is an issue with the density. It could be that the memory module is just plain defective.
Thanks in advance for this information!

  • Laptop memory

I just ordered a refurbished Mac Mini (1.83 w/ 1 GB RAM) and I have a quick (and probably dumb) memory question. I upgraded my laptop from 2GB to 4GB (its a 2.4 mhz laptop that I bought last summer) can I use the memory that I removed from my laptop to upgrade the mini?
    Thanks

It says in the specs that its only upgradable to 2 gb ram
If the mini is a 1.83 Core 2 Duo model, the specs give a 2Gb Max, but you can fit 2x2Gb modules, giving it a total of 4Gb. However, the system will only recognize 3.3Gb of that.
In a related development I spoke to someone at Apple support about another topic and I mentioned wanting to use laptop memory in the Mac Mini and she said that 1) if I put it in myself (or had a non-authorized repair center install the memory) it would void my warranty.
That's not really the 'official' line, but it is something that gets repeated a lot even so. Opening up the mini doesn't void the warranty, and neither would fitting memory. However, any damage done would risk voiding the warranty, and it is always possible for Apple to note the replaced RAM and find that to be good reason to deny warranty claims since it isn't a supported configuration.
In situations where Apple deny a warranty claim after discovering the user opened the system for a RAM upgrade, it is possible to escalate the issue to customer support, and have that decision reversed as long as there is no indication the user caused any damage or problem.
To my mind, for peace of mind, it is better for one's peace of mind to have an authorized service provider do the RAM upgrade - many will do so for relatively little charge. While Mac resellers are few and far between, there are authorized service providers in more locations. Authorized service providers can be found via the page at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1434?viewlocale=en_US

  • Mac Book Pro 17-inch Mid-2010 memory compatibility

I have a Mac Book Pro 17-inch, 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8GB 1066 MHz DD3 RAM. The RAM consists of two 4GB modules. I was just wondering if I can upgrade the RAM by putting DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz SO-DIMM PC laptop memory module RAM. Will it work?

Buying RAM off eBay is probally the worst thing you can do.
Not only that, it's some off name brand RAM made for PC's, so it's likely to cause issues or fail in the Mac, which the seller might not respond for a exchange or refund.
Inexpensive RAM is usually lower quality and more prone to not working but might so it's pawned off to third party resellers to appeal to the cheap crowd willing to work more to get their machines running.
Opening up the MacBook Pro is delicate work with fine screws that need to go back into each exact hole they came out of. The more you have to open it, the more potential damage can occur that is not covered by AppleCare or warranty.
If you want perfect RAM the first time, without having to keep trying over and over which costs you more money and headaches, buy the RAM directly from the manufactor here
    http://www.crucial.com/mac/
When your looking at the RAM approved and tested to work for your machine, you can opt to spend more for the higher speed RAM however it will only work as fast as your BUS speed (aka: "Mhz") of the machine.
Benefit of the faster RAM is it will max the bus speed, whereas the matched speed spec-ed RAM can be a bit slower than the bus speed.
If your not into serious performance of the machine, then just opt for the most used spec-ed RAM speed.

  • I tunes reads laptop memory when ipod plugged in

I have abn i pod nano which until today has worked fine... but from today when i plug my nano onto sync lead.. i tunes operns as normanl but then askes me to register nano... in the left field it seems to read the laptop memory when the ipod is higlighted.... i.e telling me i hav 40 gig of free memory
    Any idea?? please help!!!!

Do you have any other networked drives or external drives? I have experienced the problem with a Shuffle on a PC that is connected to network drives.
The solution is fairly simple yet not obvious. You need to force a drive letter for the Nano because XP is getting confused. It is trying to assign the same drive letter as something else (your 40GB drive) and reporting the wrong info.
    1. Go to Control Panel and open Administrative tools.
    2. Click on Computer Management
    3. In Computer Management highlight Disk Management at the bottom of the list.
    4. Now you should see all of your drives, including the Nano. The Nano should have the short name you gave it. Click on the drive representing your Nano and right click. Select Change Drive Letter and Paths...
    5. You will see a window listing your drive and the buttons, Add, Change, Remove, OK, and Cancel. Click Change.
    6. Now there is a new window. Make sure Assign the following drive letter: is checked and use the drop down box on the right side to select your new drive letter. Select something far way from the rest of your drives - I, J, K etc...
    7. Click OK.
    8. You will see a notice about changing a drive letter. Click Yes.
    9. Your drive should now have a new letter and iTunes will be able to read it properly.
You may have to do this twice before XP remembers to set that drive letter from then on. After that you should no longer have any problems.
    Take care.

  • Need to know which is better and faster for laptop memory upgrade

What is the difference and which is better for a laptop memory upgrade:  SDRAM, DDR SDRAM, SIMM?  One site suggested DDR SDRAM and BB suggested SO DIMM

SODIMM is the physical form factor of the module, DDR SDRAM is the actual memory type.
SIMMs are an ANCIENT form of memory module.  If you have a system that uses SIMMS, you will spend less money throwing your computer in the trash and buying a new one.
    Non-DDR SDRAM is also ancient.
Each system can only use one type of memory, i.e. you can't use DDR memory in a system that only used non-DDR memory, and you can't use DDR2 memory in a DDR system.
To find out if the configuration is 2x256 or 1x512, you'll need to look at what is installed.

  • Laptop memory not big enough

i have a 160 gb ipod classic. i have 40 gb of music and video on it but my laptop memory is nearly full. can i store more stuff on my ipod without storing it on the laptop?

    Hello hoopsmania,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
If you wish to store content on your iPod and then remove it from iTunes without losing it upon resyncing your iPod, you must set your iPod up to "manually manage music and videos" by enabling this option from under your iPod's Summary tab in iTunes. Keep in mind that, manually managing your content is a whole different ball games in terms of syncing content and such. Here is more information if need be.
[Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1535]
However, by going this route you risk losing everything on your iPod for good if something happens to your iPod. I would instead invest in an external hard drive to store your iTunes library on. You can find a pretty decent sized one for a pretty good price these days.

  • BigBang Xpower memory compatibility

    Hi.  I have used A-DATA AX3U1866PB2G8-TP2.
AX3U1866PB2G8-TP2   is adopted ELPIDA HYPER MGH-E
However, when operating at high memory clock to freeze the PC.
Prime95 and OCCT Linpak freeze prone to stress test and so on.
But, no more errors in memtest86+.
I did not have the same problem that other memory with same setting,So memory controller with no problem.
So I think that the compatibility issue. Please solve this problem.
Incidentally, other memory is A-DATA AX3U2000XB2GB-3X. AX3U2000XB2GB-3X is adopted ELPIDA BBSE.
Voltage setting is also strange. Auto Vdimm is stable at 1.65v in.  no more errors in memtest86+
However, manually set to 1.65v too unstable. memtest86+ get many errors.
    Bios ver is 1.4B8.
and this is irrelevant, Vcore settings you want to be able to offset input.
    Any help would be appreciated.

No, it isn't.  Such a specification does not exist.  It is an overclocking rating which has nothing to do with the "real" specifications of your modules.
Please set your command rate to 2T and retest.  At such high clock speeds (remember:  Intel's maximum for the CPU's memory controller is DDR3-1066!), 1T will not help you one bit.  Manually set it to 2T, otherwise the chances to stabilize your memory overclock is rather low.

This matter has been reported that MSI. What I have to wait until BIOS be fixed?
As I said before, first and foremost this is an overclocking problem, not a memory compatibility problem or a BIOS issue.  You are overclocking both the memory modules and are also forcing the memory controller to operate beyond its native specifications (DDR3-1066).  There is no guaranteed stability here.

  • Memory Master - 2-Pack 1GB PC2-5300 DIMM Laptop Memory Kit

    Hi,
I would like to purchase "Memory Master - 2-Pack 1GB PC2-5300 DIMM Laptop Memory Kit".
Everything looks perfect however it's missing the "SO"
I only see "PC2-5300 in the image of the package.
    Is this a typo?
In searching I find no "DIMM" for laptop. They are all "SODIMM".
I understand "DIMM" to be about twice the length of "SODIMM".
    Thanks in advance.

I wonder why there is only one bank with 512mb and two banks with 2gb. Is each slot a bank? There are only 2 memory slots.
It does seem to have much less disk activity and respond quicker however I have to return this and get my own memory. Each 1gb memory card is Black Diamond Series certified memory M533DN-1024BD10.

  • Running low on laptop memory. iphone backup put me over edge!!??

First off...please forgive my tech-related ignorance.  Admittedly, I know very little about computer operations.  Now that I have that disclaimer out of the way...here is my issue.  I am running very low on memory on my laptop.  I recently spent several hours deleting music and photos in an effort to create some space.  I was able to free up a whole gig of space and thought that would buy me some time.  Well...it did, until I connected my iphone.  It took a very long time to "back up" my data.  I then received a message stating that the backup to my computer couldn't be completed...presumably because I didn't have enough space to do so.  All of a sudden, I have 1.8 mb of free space!   Can someone help explain what is happening?  Backing my files up is important, I suppose, but not if it means that I can't use my laptop.  Thanks, in advance, for any thoughts, opinions, suggestions, or pearls of wisdom!

      1. See Lion's Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.

  • BT Infinity and laptop processor compatability

I have just ordered BT Infinity to be installed in October 2012.
My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite with an Intel Pentium Dual Core !.60 GHz processor. The laptop utilises Vista Home Edition with Service Pack 2. The RAM memory is 2 GB and have installed a 'n' type USB wireless adapter.
The BT Home Hub 3, hopefully, will be using 'n' type wireless network.
The BT Infinity installataion web page calls for the processor to have a minimium specification of 2 GHz.
Will my existing laptop with an Intel Pentium Dual Core !.60 GHz processor work with BT Infinity using 'n' type wireless network?
BT Infinity Help Desk could not confirm that it will work, so any advise would be welcome.

That only refers to all of the extra BT software, which you do not need anyway, as it will work without it.
Just enter the wireless key into your laptop, and it should be fine.

  • Help, cant start Laptop (memory clogged?)

Hi. Can anyone please help. I have a G4 laptop. Was using it when had a warning about there not being enough space in start up memory and to shut down applications. I quit internet and started sorting unwanted files into trash. Then hit delete trash. Left room for a cuppa, when I came back the screen was just blue.
Turned computer off, let it sit a minute and have turned it back on and it just stays in the booting up phase (apple logo & small wheel spinning round) Tried turning it on and off a few times but continually stuck in booting up phase.
    What can I do?

Safe boot mode runs a directory check command similar to that used by Disk Utility's repair. In Tiger it ignores some stored information (cache) that is normally read that speeds up the boot process, and it moves some other caches to the trash. It also uses only System fonts and disables all Startup Items, third party items, and any Login Items.
