Laptop-mode draws more power than no laptop-mode

Hey all,
I finally took the plunge and installed laptop-mode-tools. I edited the main configuration file to my liking and enabled those extra powersaving features I need. The other ones I have disabled. However, when I enable laptop-mode my battery is drained faster than without! I am pretty sure this is not what it should do
I'm clueless as for where to look though, because I didn't change any critical setting (AFAIK) and I didn't enable any 'extra' features: i just enabled those found in /etc/laptop-mode/conf.d that I need and disabled those that I don't need. Can you help me pin-point which feature of laptop-mode-tools draws more power out of my battery?
Here's the list of features I have enabled:
auto-hibernate.conf
dpms-standby.conf
ethernet.conf
intel-hda-powersave.conf
intel-sata-powermgmt.conf
lcd-brightness.conf
nmi-watchdog.conf
runtime-pm.conf
sched-mc-power-savings.conf
sched-smt-power-savings.conf
terminal-blanking.conf
usb-autosuspend.conf
wireless-power.conf
Those that I have disabled:
ac97-powersave.conf
battery-level-polling.conf
bluetooth.conf
configuration-file-control.conf
cpufreq.conf
eee-superhe.conf
exec-commands.conf
hal-polling.conf
start-stop-programs.conf
video-out.conf
wireless-ipw-power.conf
wireless-iwl-poweac97-powersave.conf
battery-level-polling.conf
bluetooth.conf
configuration-file-control.conf
cpufreq.conf
eee-superhe.conf
exec-commands.conf
hal-polling.conf
start-stop-programs.conf
video-out.conf
wireless-ipw-power.conf
wireless-iwl-power.confr.conf
Thanks in advance!
PS: if you need any files, please tell me. As I said I am clueless what could cause this, so I could give you a list of all the laptop-mode files I have edited but I don't think this would help anything.
EDIT: I have disabled the cpufreq one because I use cpupower and have that setup without any laptop-mode-tools interference. I use the on-demand governor all the time. An extra question: do I need those sched-{mc,smt} features in laptop-mode, if I have configured those in cpupower as well? For now I left them in, but I was gonna figure this one out still.

Finally had the time to do some testing with powertop. The highest result I get are these:
Top causes for wakeups:
35,8% (309,7) [Rescheduling interrupts] <kernel IPI>
28,8% (248,8) PS/2 toetsenbord/muis/touchpad interrupt
The first I have also without laptop-mode, the second I don't have. However, it does seem to drain a little slower now. Anyway, any hints to persue to get those wakeups down?
PS: powertop also suggested this:
Suggestion: Enable the CONFIG_INOTIFY kernel configuration option.
This option allows programs to wait for changes in files and directories
instead of having to poll for these change
Does the Arch kernel have that by default or do I have to build my own kernel for this?

  • Left USB provides less power than right?

I've noticed that my left USB won't power my external HDD. But it seems to provide some power because the light comes on the drive and i can feel it spin some. Plugging it into the right USB works fine. it mounts right up.
any reason why one would give more power than the other?

It's not only a Mac problem, I get the same thing on my desktop Windows PC with it's front two USB ports, if I plug a USB HDD into the front ports the drive just clicks and does not mount but if I plug it into the rear ports no problems - think as S.U. said it's because the front are connected to the MoBo via a header and longish wires so can not provide the power needed to run a device like a HDD ?!

  • More Rx power than Tx on SFP DOM

    Hi everyone,
I actualy use 2 cisco catalyst 2960 24TC-L, both with one SFP (AXCEN AXGD-5854-0511 SFP-1000SX-DD), with 2 fiber (TX RX) 50/125 between, 15m lenght.
My goal is to monitor the power of each link, but i have more power on RX than TX...
    My case for exemple :
              - TX switch 1 : -6.2dBm
              - RX switch 1: -5,7dBm
              - TX switch 2: -6,9dBm
              - RX switch 2:-4,8dBm
I run iOS 15.0 on both.
I havn't found any problem like that on the net.
Is this normal ? Recurrent on this hardware ?
    Any suggestion ?
    Thanks for your help

  • Why my ipad (4th Gen) consume more power when reading books in ibook than surfing over wifi

when i m reading my books in ibook it consume more power .I notice that power decrease 1% per 4 minutes

Power consumption increases significantly when the screen is set to a high brightness. If you are using your iPad ins a bight environment, for example, outside, flourescent lights, etc. and have auto-brightness turned ON then the iPad will automatically increase screen brightness resulting in higher power consumption.
Also using small changes in battery percentage to predict total power reserve is not very accurate.

  • IP address has more numbers than Mac allows

    Hi,
I'm trying to hook up a security camera system (for the barn), and I'm having trouble - I had it set up last year, can't remember what I did. Anyway, the unit hooks up to a router (the AE base station via ethernet), and I'm trying to use a PC laptop to watch from the house - I was given an IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, but it seems like it's more numbers than Mac likes. Also, I am trying to Port Map, since that's what the instructions say (5000 to 5003), but have no idea how to do this.
    Help?

When setting up port mapping in a router you only use the last number (.xxx) on the right of the IP address. The first three numbers (xxx.xxx.xxx) are the same for all devices connected to a router.

  • ITunes Match indicates more songs than Library

Updating iTunes Match says "2821 songs are now available in iCloud", however, my library says 2820.  This occurs w/ 3 separate computers (Win7 desktop and laptop, and a MacBook Air running OS X Lion) all synced to the same iTunes Match account.  I know it's only a variance of 1 track, but has anyone else run into something similar?  Any way to manage just the music in iCloud?

iTunes Match if only matched with a single library can only contain upto the number of Songs in that single library - clearly if it has access to more than one library it is soon going to contain more Songs than any individual library.

  • Help! iMac/OS X crashing more often than XP

No not sensationalist but actually true for the past 10 days compared to my PC. I've been having all sorts of problems with my new iMac and I don't have enough knowledge / hands on experience to know how to fix it.
Here's a couple of problems by way of example:
    trying to use Front Row to play a DVD - FR just locked up the iMac all I could do was reset by holding down the power button;
waking from sleep - all OK for a few days and then with no processes running except Address Book I woke the Mac and minimised the onscreen Address Book - this froze as it minimised and nothing could force quit the app (actually that's happened with both iLife and third party apps quite a lot in the pst few days).
apps refusing to launch - even though they were used a couple of hours earlier.
I've run the extended Hardware test to no avail. Repaired disc permissions via Onyx (actually an hour ago even that just hung and I had to cold boot again).
I have no idea where to go next, though I have one qestion for any one more experienced than me: could the problems originate from data pulled over from my iBook via Target mode? Am I at the stage where I need to reformat and reinstall and how should I go about it and preserve my settings and data?
I sincerely hope someone can help.

    Hello Tenex
In case you have Adobe Software installed, the culprit could be Adobe Version Cue.
To solve it, boot in safe mode and remove the Adobe Version Cue folder from the Library/StartupItems and it should be back to normal.
    Other things you can try:
Is your Ram build in by Apple or is it 3rd Party Ram?
Try it with one Ram Stick only, if it still crashes, try the other one.
    SMC reset: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
Reset NVRAM: Press Option-Command-P-R until you hear two or three beeps
    Safe Mode:
Hold down the Shift key during startup to force the computer to start in safe mode. Staring in safe mode does the following things:
    * It forces a directory check of the startup volume.
    * It loads only required kernel extensions (some of the items in /System/Library/Extensions).
    * It runs only Apple-installed startup items (some of the items in /Library/StartupItems and /System/Library/StartupItems - and different than login items).
    * Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger only: It disables all fonts other than those in /System/Library/Fonts .
    * Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger only: It moves to the Trash all font caches normally stored in /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/(uid)/ , where (uid) is a user ID number such as 501.
    * Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger only: It disables any Login Items.

  • KDE 4.6 more power hungry?

    Hello there.
Just upgraded to the latest KDE release, which worked greate, only thing I noticed is that through Powertop KDE 4.6 seems more power hungry. It seems to draw around 3~4 watts more, does anyone else notice something along the same line?

occam wrote:I see in 'System Activity' that dbus-daemon uses 32% and nepomukserver 22% of the total CPU capacity when running KDE 4.6
In KDE4.5.* those percentages were less than 2%.  Maybe this has a bearing on your observation?
Thats the strange part, my system is behaving like with 4.5, nothing is using excessive amounts of CPU or Mem.
locke87 wrote:Well, I had this as well. I removed all files from Nepomuk and akonadi (After stopping both), that solved the issue.
Could you post how you did that? I have turned off Nepomuk, don't know about akonadi.

  • Intel more reliable than G4 ??

    hi, all
i have an old iMac 233 MHz, still running (except that it never would wake up correctly, otherwise NO problem for 8 years!!) . 20 months ago i bought an iMac G5 20", which developed recently major problems, which are NOT solved after the official apple service exhanged the logic board. 10 days ago, i bought for my daughter an miniMac G4, which now already showed Kernel-Panics. These are things which fall under Apple warranty, and are not the topics of this post here.
    my question is the following:
I need another computer, small type desktop like the mini. Laptop might be a solution as well, but is expensive and less suitable. The past experience with my iMac and the miniMac g4 get me suspicious about the reliability of Aplle.
has anybody some kind of overview on whether the miniMac intel (single processor) are more reliable -- well, i know: how to gauge it? thus
"more reliable than my experience with G4 and G5 machines"?
any response is welcome, and "Thanks in advance"
    Thomas

    Hello,
That is a tough one to answer with certainty since we don't have real numbers to play with. But, from my perspective, the Mac Mini G4 was the most reliable computer Apple has produced since the introduction of the Mini. I've had nothing but good reliable service from mine, and all the other new machines I've purchased since the G4 mini have been sold because they kept breaking down. So, I've repeatedly gone back to my slower mini G4 because of it's reliability.
The Intel Mini seems to have had comparable success to the G4 Mini. It would appear from most reports that the Intel Mini is almost as reliable as the G4 mini. For most accounts, it would seem to be on equal footing. But, there are more graphical anomalies and sound problems that have cropped-up in the Intel versions. These are not necessarily wide-spread problems, but just problems that were not present in the G4 versions.
So, from what I have seen and experienced, I would compare the G4 Minis and Intel Minis as being very much the same in terms of reliability. I would add that the Intel Mini has had problems that the G4 Mini has not had. But, that does not appear to be a significant number of units. So, they are probably very comparable.
Whether this helps or not, I don't know. But, I hope it does help you to some degree.
Let us know if you have other questions.

It certainly sounds like your harddrive is dying.  I would Immediately backup your harddrive to an external USB or Firewire harddrive Before doing anything else.  It just may save your data in time before you lose it all.
    Hope this helps

    Pro Tools 10.3.7
    Interface Apollo 16
Pro Tools is curretnly not compatible with Maverick.   Also, I believe that Pro Tools 10 only allows 4GB ram to be utilized (not sure )
I know Pro Tools 11 allows more, but not sure how much more.  Also not sure if the upgrade to Pro Tools 11 I will have to purchase all new plug ins or if my existing ones will continue to work in it.
The platform changes from 32 bit to 64 with the upgrade to 11
If it is as simple as adding more ram, what mode-part #l would you recomeend.  Can the processor be upgraded also ?
The new tube like Macs are non compatible with UAD Cards.  Those cards a must my sessions

You can use Activity Monitor to check if apps run as 32 or 64 bit - simply look at the "Kind" column (you may need to select it under View -> Columns) and see if the app in question is listed as "Intel" i.e. 32 bit or as "Intel (64 bit)".
While in Activity Monitor you can also check if Pro Tools is close to the 3-4 GB limit of a 32 bit app - if you aren't you will probably not benefit from more RAM.
Your MacPro (it appears to be a Early 2009 model) should have come with a small booklet showing how to install RAM and what kind of RAM that you need. Any RAM that fulfills the requirements should work but your safest choice is probably to buy from a retailer/online store that supports Macs as they will usually know what kind of RAM you need for your mac model.
Upgrading the CPUs should be possible, but I haven't seen Apple document how to do this, so you will probably have to google around a bit to find instructions and CPU part numbers.
Your choice of CPUs will also be limited by the motherboard and CPU socket so you may be limited to faster version of your current CPU chip and some slightly newer versions.
Going from your current CPU to the fastest version included in the 2009 MacPros would be going from 2.26 GHz to 2.93 GHz. This would only give a modest 30% speed boost. Using newer and highly clocked CPUs might boost this somewhat more maybe to 50% ?

  • More ram than specs call for

Specs for my emac specify support for 1GB of ram. In searching for additional ram (I presently have 512MB) I have found some suppliers that claim you can install 2GB (1GB in each of the two slots). I called and they said they have tested this and it works fine. I consider the company I called to be reputable. Has anyone heard of this? What would be the downside of trying it out - other than the extra cost? Is there some kind of power limitations or something that might harm my computer?
    Thanks for any insight,
    Doug

Ya if you do a search of this group, you will find this has come up a LOT of times and yes your Mac can use more RAM than 1GB if you want.
JIMacG5 I think is being a bit paranoid since, A) your eMac is probably long out of warranty anyway and B) Apple only tests up to whatever RAM was available at the time the model was in production. They do not test RAM for old models so many old models have outdates RAM specs and can use a lot more than they "officially" state they do.
