Laptop no longer loads Captive Portal following Windows 8.1 upgrade

Since upgrading to Win 8.1 from Win 8, I no longer see a captive portal displayed whenever I try to connect to a wireless network that requires additional login information.  Some WiFi networks require you to click their Terms and Conditions box
or add some additional logon information and they splash up a Captive Portal screen to allow you to enter the information.  Without entering this information I receive an IP address for my wireless adapter ok, but end up with a "Limited Internet"
connection.  Which means I cannot connect to the Internet at all.  This exact same problem has happened to two colleagues of mine that recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 on their laptops.  Any help will be much appreciated.

Hello Grantlsmith,
Do you receive any error message when you connect to a wireless network that requires additional login information?
Or you just connect to the Wi-Fi with limited Internet, and nothing pop up?
Please take the following steps for troubleshooting:
1. Please provide the result of the command ipconfig –all
2. Ping the IP address of URL and check if we can contact.
3. Type in the URL that can use in Windows 8 and check if we can open the Captive Portal
Best regards,

  • ITunes no longer loads after updating to Windows 8.1.  I have tried every corrective step I've found on the web (reinstall, copy files, change permissions, etc.) nothing helps.  Has anyone heard if Apple is working on fix?

Itunes does not launch after updating to Windows 8.1.  I've tried every suggestion I can find on web (reinstall, copy files from other directories, change permissions, etc.).  Nothing works.  At best I can get the licensing agreement to show and then nothing.  Has anyone heard if a fix is in the works?

    Hi 3backpacker3,
It sounds like you are on the right track in troubleshooting this issue. If you are having launch issues, you may find the following article helpful:

  • HP Pavilion x2 11-h003sa: app functionality problems following Windows 8.1 upgrade

I recently bought an HP Pavilion x2 11-h003sa 2 in 1 laptop/tablet.  This came with Windows 8, and I decided to accept the free upgrade to Windows 8.1. Since doing this, several apps, including purchased apps, are not working correctly when they worked fine on Windows 8.  Please note I have applied all available Windows updates, app updates and I have ensured they are compatible with our firewall.  Where possible I have uninstalled then reinstalled the apps. The problem is as follows:
The following apps are affected: Angry Birds Star Wars, Star Wars Assault Team and (the pre installed) Fingertaps Instruments.  When these apps are activated, the screen goes blank.  The app only reappears when the Charms Bar is swiped from the right of the screen.  If I then attempt to touch the screen to use the app, the screen will immediately go blank.  I have to activate the charms bar in order to close the app completely to return to the start menu  The apps are, consequently, useless.  The pre-installed Monopoly app is even worse, as activating this results in a blank screen and only closing the app will return to to the start menu.  I would like to emphasise that all these apps worked fine prior to upgrading to Windows 8.1. The retailer (PC World) has never encountered such an error before and suggested I try and resolve it online.
I have also noticed that occasionally, after period of use, the touchscreen and the Windows start button simply stop working, and I have to close the tablet down and restart in order to get this resolved.  I have not owned this computer long enough to comment if this had been a problem prior to upgrading tp Windows 8.
I look forward to any ideas or if anyone has encountered anything similar.  I am regretting upgrading to Windows 8.1, as the useability of an expensive and otherwise excellent piece of hardware has been compromised by this upgrade.

Hi Toastcartoons1. It sounds like it may be driver related. The update instructions indicated you should install the latest drivers before updating where possible.  Updating your HP Windows 8 PC to Windows 8.1
Maybe you can identify some opportunities, to update drivers that may be affecting the Apps you are having problems with. The most likely candidate is graphics.  Before the graphics driver, I would recommend trying the Chipset update first:
Intel Chipset Installation Utility and Driver
    Intel High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver
After installing both and restarting, try to recreate the issue. If you can, then reininstall the problematic Apps, and try again.
If you want to go back to Windows 8, this is the procedure: Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8)
I hope this helps. Let me know the results.

  • WLC Captive Portal not loading images or via HTTP correctly

    Hi All,
I have a strange issue I'm hoping someone can shed some light on.
I have a CT2504 at a customer site which does not load the captive portal page correctly nor will it load via HTTP as opposed to HTTPS.
So for starters I did what I do with all my CT2504's (which work fine), I configured my Guest network to authenticate via the default captive portal. I then disabled HTTPS and SSH and enabled HTTP managment followed by rebooting the controller.
On boot, logging into the WLC management GUI is automatically presented via HTTP as expected.
However when clients access the Guest network they are redirected to the Web Authorisation via HTTPS instead of HTTP, any ideas?
In addtion to the above the captive portal page does not display correctly.
The preview via the controller works fine, but the client is presented with a page with broken links to the images i.e. the blue strip at the top and the Cisco logo on the right, any clue what's happening here?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Gary

Thanks Gray. I am glad it worked.

I found a fix for this, not only firefox but several other networking programs were broken as well (Outlook and IE were ok for some reason) so I reasoned that the Norton uninstall was incomplete somehow - I had done it from the add/remove programs in the control panel. Sure enough that's not enough to release Norton's tentacles in your system, there's an uninstall tool on their website (a whole set of them actually) that managed to carve it out completely and after a restart everything was back to normal. My machines will definitely be Norton-free from now on ... N

  • ISE Wired captive portal

I've a new ISE Integration, I've implemented captive portal for wireless and wired guests, for Wireless all is working perfect
For Wired I can see that ISE put the url captive on the interface of the switch but from the laptop of windows machine, I'm unable to see the link on browser, please advice

In the same document you have
Wired NAD Interaction for Central WebAuth
If your client's machine is hard wired to a NAD, the guest service interaction takes the form of a failed MAB request that leads to a guest portal Central WebAuth login.
The Central WebAuth triggered by a MAB failure flow follows these steps:
    1. The client connects to the NAD through a hard-wired connection. There is no 802.1X supplicant on the client.
    2. An authentication policy with a service type for MAB allows a MAB failure to continue and return a restricted network profile containing a URL-redirect for Central WebAuth user interface.
    3. The NAD is configured to post MAB requests to the Cisco ISE RADIUS server.
    4. The client machine connects and the NAD initiates a MAB request.
    5. The Cisco ISE server processes the MAB request and does not find an end point for the client machine. This MAB failure resolves to the restricted network profile and returns the URL-redirect value in the profile to the NAD in an access-accept. To support this function, ensure that an Authorization Policy exists featuring the appropriate "NetworkAccess:UseCase=Hostlookup" and "Session:Posture Status=Unknown" conditions.
The NAD uses this value to redirect all client HTTP/HTTPS traffic on ports 8080 or 8443 to the URL-redirect value. The standard URL value in this case is:
    https://ip:port/guestportal/gateway?sessionId=NetworkSessionId&action=cwa.
    6. The client initiates an HTTP or HTTPS request to any URL using the client browser.
    7. The NAD redirects the request to the URL-redirect value returned from the initial access-accept.
    8. The gateway URL value with action CWA redirects to the guest portal login page.
    9. The client enters the username and password and submits the login form.
    10. The guest action server authenticates the user credentials provided.
    11. If the credentials are valid, the username and password are stored in the local session cache by the guest action server.
    12. If the guest portal is configured to perform Client Provisioning, the guest action redirects the client browser to the Client Provisioning URL. (You can also optionally configure the Client Provisioning Resource Policy to feature a "NetworkAccess:UseCase=GuestFlow" condition.)
Since there is no Client Provisioning or Posture Agent for Linux, guest portal redirects to Client Provisioning, which in turn redirects back to a guest authentication servlet to perform optional IP release/renew and then CoA.
    13. If the guest portal is not configured to perform Client Provisioning, the guest action server sends a CoA to the NAD through an API call. This CoA will cause the NAD to reauthenticate the client using the RADIUS server. This reauthentication makes use of the user credentials stored in the session cache. A new access-accept is returned to the NAD with the configured network access. If Client Provisioning is not configured and the VLAN is in use, the guest portal performs VLAN IP renew.
    14. With redirection to the Client Provisioning URL, the Client Provisioning subsystem downloads a non-persistent web-agent to the client machine and perform posture check of the client machine. (You can optionally configure the Posture Policy with a "NetworkAccess:UseCase=GuestFlow" condition.)
    15. If the client machine is non-complaint, ensure you have configured an Authorization Policy that features "NetworkAccess:UseCase=GuestFlow" and "Session:Posture Status=NonCompliant" conditions.
    16. Once the client machine is compliant, ensure you have an Authorization policy configured with conditions "NetworkAccess:UseCase=GuestFlow" and "Session:Posture Status=Compliant" conditions), From here, the Client Provisioning issues a CoA to the NAD. This CoA will cause the NAD to reauthenticate the client using the RADIUS server. This reauthentication makes use of the user credentials stored in the session cache. A new access-accept is returned to the NAD with the configured network access.

  • LAPAC1750 Captive Portal

    Hello,
I was surprised to discover captive portal from the 1750 cause its not explain into the docs. Only the 1750 PRO should have this function.
Well I tried it  but I cannot use...
    Captive Portal
    Global Configuration
    Portal Profiles
    Local User
    Local Group
    Web Customization
    Profile Association
    Client Information
    Instances configuration is missing...
I disable security mode in Wireless SSiD then I can connect with a laptop.
Next I launch firefox then I got error loading "fail connection" (www.google.com).
Then I type in the bar adress of my web browser the ip local adress to my wifi access point LAPAC1750 and I got 401 Unauthorized page...
How to setup this captive portal ?
    Best regards
    Bobo

    Hi,
I think the Captive portal for LAPAC1750 is with the new firmware release last month. This is part of the additional feature added to the following models LAPN600, LAPAC1200 and LAPAC1750. This is based on the release notes they have on the Linksys website. I haven't upgraded my LAPAC1200, I might try it later and check if I will have the same problem.

  • Long Load Times on Graphic Intensive Games

I'm experiencing some absurdly long load times (1-3 hours) with many games (SPORE, Portal, X:3, etc...) that I believe may be related to how graphically intensive they are. Older games with lower graphics quality (WoW, Civ 4, etc...) load up fine.
When I load any newer game the icon appears in the tray and the computer does nothing else for at least an hour, whereupon the program loads and begins playing immediately--often without any further delays or issues.
I also use Boot Camp to run Windows Vista (Ultimate 32) and experience no delays when running SPORE on Windows.
