Laptop not booting

Yesterday I had my macbook freeze on me so I powered it off. When I turned it back on it clicks 4 times and won't boot up (can't find hard drive).
I assume this is a hard drive problem correct? Does anyone know that click code?

Looks like I found some info on what I need here:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=910664&tstart=45
In terms of the beeping it looks like it is:
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
I guess I'll just have to take it in for repair.

  • C700 Laptop: Not booting: Black screen: No BIOS

My 4 years old Compaq Presario c700 (C794) laptop is not booting up. Does not go into BIOS, and does not even show the message “Press F10 to enter BIOS” etc.
I see a clear black screen (but has backlit and I am able to adjust the brightness using Fn keys). Tried on the desktop monitor, it is black too.
The HD is running intermittently, all LEDs are on, and the fan is running.
Windows is not booting up, there is no log on sound. WIFI light is also orange, it becomes green after booting is complete. HD activity is on but it is not as much to boot up Windows 7.
    Troubleshooting I did till now:
Hard reset by holding down the power button several times.
Cleaned RAM and placed it in another slot.
Removed the power and battery and kept it overnight.
Tried on the desktop monitor, it is black too.
This happened all of a sudden. I did not do any BIOS updates or anything that normally causes these kind of problem. I learned from some forums that an exhausted CMOS battery can cause it. Is it true? In this case, can you please give the location of the CMOS battery in these laptops?
What are the other measures I can take?

  • Laptop not booting after I Upgraded BIOS

    Toshiba Satellite A215-S5849
Originally had issues with the left speaker making a horrible buzzing noise. Searching forums & help boards & the fact that I'm fairly computer Literate I came to the conclusion a OS reinstall was called for.
Since I only use this laptop for DJing theres only a couple of programs on it so it was not too much hastle.
Reinstalled OS Windows 7 updated it & all the drivers & the Buzz was still there.
This is when I read from a couple of users of Toshiba laptops said an upgrade of the BIOS helped them.
So I went to the official Toshiba support page & flashed my laptop using the following BIOS upgrade
ACPI Flash BIOS version 2.00 for Satellite A215 (PSAFGU/PSAFHU) 32/64-bit
Nearing the end of the flash my pc screen went black power lights are on, cord light on, battery light on just no OS
    What I've tried.
    Unplugged from power supply.
    Removed Battery
Left for 20 mins & then tried to reboot.
    Same thing happens each time
Power lights come on HD spins for a minute but nothing happens after that.
Any ideas why an official software update would cause my computer to not work & how do I roll back or clear my bios to default specs.

Finally I found a good Phoenix crisis copy at : http://mods.myftp.org/Tools/CrisDisk_and_Pen_Drive?_Recovery.rar
to download my own version of crisis disk with the new v2.0 rom bios. ready to build the floppy by running the crisdisk.bat:
    http://rapidshare.com/files/410963513/CrisDisk.zip?.html
I posted this instruction to repair my A215 with these files:
Since finding a solution was a very confusing experience, here is how I fixed it (it should work for most similar models.)
Now read it all the way through because the steps are critical.
I got a Toshiba Satellite A215 PSAFGU (S6814) And after shutting down from overheating during a flash from windows it didn't boot. Black screen and nothing more. Meanning my bios was corrupt
So after lots of trial and error, using an external usb floppy drive I managed to save my laptop.
Maybe people here describe how to do it, but they tell you to download the wrong crisis recovery files and once you try to use your ROM instead of the one on the disk, or try to replace phlash16.exe it just fails. Tried injecting but that didn't work.
Finally I found a good Phoenix crisis copy at : http://mods.myftp.org/Tools/CrisDisk_and_Pen_Drive?_Recovery.rar
unrar and go to the directory, then unrar (you'll see it) CRISDISK.rar .
This copy of crisis with phflash16.exe (in the extracted directory) is a good version that can handle the newest versions of bios ROM.
Now copy your ROM file to the crisisdisk directory renaming the file to bios.wph and thus replacing the existing one.(i used the new 2.0 version ROM from the Toshiba site - in this case its called m10a200.rom)
To prevent 'dos path' errors when building the disk, copy the entire directory to a simple one like c:\cirsis
Build your disk now by running CRISDISK.BAT - the process includes quick formatting, copying the three files, and lastly making it bootable, make sure you go through all the steps. ( at first, i messed the last part by not having it bootable and it failed ofcourse)
once it says it created the disk successfully, put it in your external usb drive (or use the disk you created to make a bootable flash drive by using hp drivekey boot utility available here: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/S?oftwareDescription.jsp?swItem=MTX-UNITY-I23839 I didn't have a chance to test it with usb flash drives, but it should work.)
Now once you connected your media to the usb port on your laptop:
make sure the battery is out, power cord out, hold fn+f, while doing that, plug the cord and then push the power button, release the fn+f key once you see the light on your usb drive/usb floppy is starting to blink. it should pause for a few seconds, and then start reading the disk for a while (not just 3 seconds). Process should not take more then 10 minutes so waiting more then that is a waste(trust me). The computer should reboot byitself if everything is fine. Mine took about 5 minutes but give it 10 just to make sure.
After hours of finding, replacing, injecting, only this worked.
This works for sure, if you follow these instructions with your Toshiba Satellite A215. Don't loose hope - you will recover it.
A good sign is when using the fn+f method and it flashed the usb drive/floppy. It means its 99% recoverable.
Really hope this saves time for others.
This is a solution posted by yarivc on the USA Toshiba site.

    BTW
    to the last poster
If you were to ask 100 customers in any comp store who just purchased a Toshiba Laptop if they knew a OFFICIAL UPDATE from the manufacturers support website would VOID a warrenty I gaurantee not one of them would know that nor be impressed by it.
Further more what screwed up my bios was not the BIOS upgrade but the fact that Toshiba has a install from your desktop (windows) button in the update, researching this I found that one should never use this method because Windows in inherently unstable when it comes to BIOS update.
This option should NOT have been included in the update since its very unstable to do so.
    On a side note.
My left speaker buzzing noise is back. But it doesnt seem too annoying right now concidering I saved myself money & headache.

  • Laptop not booting satellite

    Hello,
Please help me there is a problem wih my satellite l655. When i press the start button the screen comes up but the screen remains blank in ash colour. And does not seem to go to the os loading screen. The "Toshiba Leading innovation"  screen does not seem to show up either what should i do please tell me. I have my GCE a/s exams and i really need the computer therefore i need a quick way to make the laptop.
Thankyou for reading Please help me as fast as you can
    Email:[email protected]

It sounds like the computer is turning on and working but you're not getting any video. As a temporary fix, hook up an external monitor to the VGA port and turn on the monitor. Now turn on the computer again. If the computer is still not showing anything on the external monitor, while holding down the FN key, tap the F5 key a couple times.
I think there is something wrong with your computer. If it is still under warranty get it fixed as soon as possible, because an out of warranty screen repair can be expensive.

  • Laptop not booting from UEFI usb drive

    Hi,
unfortunately I delete the whole hard drive so I'm trying to reinstall it. I'm using a Windows 8.1 UEFI usb drive (successfully used on other computers) but I got the following error on booting:
No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key
I don't have any selectable options in bios (i.e. legacy / secure boot). My bios version is F1C. It happens with any USB port (I tried them all).
The same happens with a Windows 7 UEFI usb key.
It works with a non-UEFI drive but I want to use UEFI...
    Thanks a lot
    riccardo

There are no Windows 8 or 8.1 drivers for your notebook.

    hi sathish291
    Welcome to the Forums.
    Can you try the following:
    1. Power down the machine, remove the AC adapter and battery.
    2. Hold the power button for 30secs and reconnect the AC adapter only then turn the computer ON.
If the machine still doesn't power up normally and boot into WIndows then it's likely that something went wrong (could be a bad BIOS flash or an internal component might have gone defective during or after the BIOS update). In this case, you may need to contact lenovo on how to go about getting the unit serviced.

  • My Lenovo B460e Laptop not detecting Bootable Pendrive

I have govt gifted Lenovo B460e Laptop. I already removed old both OS. I freshly installed Windows 8 using Bootable Pendrive. Now I think to install new OS using Bootable Pendrive but my Laptop not boot ing Pendrive for OS Installation. If i try to boot from Pendrive. Show Black Screen and go to the windows OS Login Window and also Setu Utility (BIOS) protected with password. I dont know also Setup Utility Password. I also checked Bootable Pendrive with another Laptop its working fine with it. Kindly help for installing new OS using Bootable Pendrive.

    hi Santh93,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Try using other Pendrive (Other brand)
This might be compatability issue with the format
Or the BIOS is se to load a proper UEFI boot. If this is the Case you will really need to enter the BIOS and set it to boot as legacy for it to boot on your flash drive.
With the BIOS Password, the only thing I can think is to call Support team for assistance.

  • Laptop does not boot.

Laptop will not load Vista OS.  BIOS works ok and all internal diags passed ( harddrive and memory ).  The screen stays black with the cursor blinking.  I tried booting off on the dvd drive with a Vista and Windows 2008 server boot disk but got a CDBOOT Error Code:0.  Could not find that error anywhere on the web.  I removed the harddrives and screen showed "NO bootable disk" as I would have expected.  SATA Harddrive issue?  Could that also cause the DVD drive to malfunction?
    thanks,

I grasp that your notebook will not boot or startup but just presents a blank or black screen.    You were able to access the bios and test the hard drive and memory and both passed. You tried booting to a Vista disk but were unsuccessful.

  • G580 Laptop will not boot due to the harddrive some how disconnecting

    Hello,
My problem with my G580 is that when I start up there is a sounds coming from the laptop and in the booting device list, the HDD with windows 7 on it which is the main HDD won't show. Pretty sure it is because the HDD somehow disconnected but how much will it cost if I send it in to lenovo to fix it?
Video of when I start it up... https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bzb6bwEsdb02cS1RV05aTkVSbUU/edit?usp=sharing

    Hi Brandon,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
I’m sorry to hear that your G580 Laptop is not detecting the HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and not booting to Windows. I would suggest you to perform the BIOS reset once and check if the HDD is detected in BIOS, below are the steps for the same:
To access BIOS menu press F2 when the Lenovo logo appears on the screen while the computer is starting up.
Then to reset the BIOS to its defaults click on “F9” Key and select YES.
Now click on “F10” Key to save the changes that are done in BIOS, the computer should automatically restart. Please check if the issue persists.
If the issue persists even after performing BIOS reset, I would suggest you to contact our Technical Support for further Assistance to get the details of the nearest Authorized Service Center to get the issue analyzed and for information about repair cost.
Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I’m sure they will be a great help.
Do post us back for further queries.
    Best Regards

  • Laptop will not boot, no display and flashing caps key

    Hi,
I am attemping to repair a laptop for a family member, their baby threw up on the keyboard, although after they cleared it up they said it was still working (booting into windows, mouse working etc). They took the old keyboard out themselves but it looks like they were a bit heavy handed with it; there are quite a few scratches on the metal plate underneath the keyboard and the plastic surround. I have not yet been able to confirm if the laptop was still booting after the keboard was removed.
Anyway - I went to their house to do what I thought was going to be a relatively easy job, simply connecting the new keyboard. Now the laptop will not boot, there is no display on the screen and we get a flashing CAPS/F12 key. I have looked at the table for LED codes, but I am not sure if it is one flash lots of times, or six flashes. The warranty has also run out so sending to HP not really an option.
There are six short flashes, with quite a long pause between each one. After this the laptop powers off and after another pause turns itself back on and starts over. If it is one flash (CPU) then I guess they must have shafted something on the board by shoving the screwdriver in underneath the keyboard to prise it away from the laptop. There is however not an awful lot of stuff exposed - there is a fairly substancial metal plate under where the keyboard would sit to protect the laptop.
I am hoping at the moment that it is showing six flashes - which is BIOS authentication error. I am not that familiar with HP products, but could this be caused by installing a non-genuine keyboard? The keyboard looks the same from the top, but was bought for less than a tenner on ebay.
If anybody has any ideas that would be great.
    Aaron

  • Apple Macbook 13.3" Laptop-Black 2008 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo will not boot up and instead I get a grey screen with a folder and a question mark over it.

My Apple Macbook 13.3" Laptop-Black 2008 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo will not boot up and instead I get a grey screen with a folder and a question mark over it.  I've tried Option key, and Control S keys and it still will not boop up.  Can anyone help?

If you are running Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
If you are running Lion or later:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it isthree times faster than wireless.
