Laptop not recognizing 2nd monitor U410

Ever since my windows 8.1 upgrade (?) My laptop has not recognised any external monitor through my HDMI port.
Upon drive installation it will work but after a reboot i am in the same position again and have to re-install the graphics driver.
my ideapad is U410.
It Worked fine (with regard to graphics) at Windows 8.0 problems started after upgrade to 8.1
My connector on the Idea pad is HDMI whilst the connector on the monitor is DVI (i have tried two different cables both give the same result.
If anyone has any advice i would greatly appreciate it.

So, I need to you to try a couple of things first before we figure out the actual problem.
1. Connect the cable to your second display and navigate to Control Panel.
2. Click on Display and Then on Change Display Settings.
Q - Do you see your laptop display and the external display listed there?
If Yes, then select the external display, set the resolution and Click Ok.
(Whether you want to duplicate displays or use either one is up to you)
You can also click Identify to verify that both displays are being identified correctly.
If No, then click on Detect (if its enabled) and see if the other monitor shows up.
Let me know if anything works. We can further investigate your issue.
Also, Are you saying that your graphics drivers get Uninstalled (or corrupted), everytime you reboot?
How about your other drivers, such as audio, peripherals?

I am trying to use my TV as a second monitor using an HDMI cord.  No matter what I do, my laptop does not recognize the 2nd monitor.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled the display drivers so many times, rebooted, etc and it still not not recognize it.
Can someone please help me before I hurl this laptop out the window.
    Thanks!

Right-click on the Desktop and select "Screen Resolution" while the TV is connected. Does the Screen Resolution window show a second monitor?

  • Imac not recognizing 2nd monitor

On cold startup,  why do I always need to unplug and replug thunderbolt mini display to vga adapter for imac to see second monitor ?
Once I do this, the 2nd monitor is recognized.  If I restart, 2nd monitor is recognized.
thanks.. I am worried that the port will be compromised with all the unplug/replugs.
Btw... the "detect displays" function doesn't resolve this issue.

    Hi John,
I really have no idea, but as a test, hold alt key at cold startup, let it set on that screen for maybe a minute or two, then click the startup volume or hit enter... any change?
Also, if you log out & back in does it show up?

  • Pavilion Slimline 400-034 Windows 8 not detecting 2nd Monitor

Hello, I have a Windows HP computer, and I recently bought a 2nd monitor for my birthday, link click here. I have the same monitor for my first, and that works perfectly fine, when I bought the 2nd monitor, I realized I have a different port, and it's not a DVI-I, it's a DVI-D. So I bought a VGA to DVI-D connector, so I plugged my VGA into the connector and then plug the DVI-D into the tower. I turned on my computer, and the 2nd monitor wasn't detected, the DVI-D connected one, but the first one was. The monitor was set into mode auto, so it detected any working inputs, DVI, VGA, HDMI, and another. The 2nd monitor works thought while into the DVI-I port, but neither work in the DVI-D port. Any help (: ??

    Here are the specs for you HP Pavilion Slimline 400-034 Desktop Computer and here is the user guide for your Insignia™ - 24" LED HD "NS-24EM51A14" Monitors. Based on the specs of your computer, it has one DVI-D (digital only) output and one DVI-I (digital and analog) output as shown below;
    #3 - DVI-D (digital only)                     #4 - DVI-I (digital and analog)
    According the user guide for your Insignia monitors... VGA, DVI-D, and HMDI inputs are available. Using a passive DVI-to-VGA adapter will work on the DVI-I port because it supplies both digital and analog signals. Using a passive DVI-to-VGA adapter will NOT work on the DVI-D port because it only supplies digital signals. Please remove both DVI-to-VGA adapters and VGA cables and replace them both with DVI-D cables. You can purchase these cables online and at most local retail store such as Fry's, Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Radio Shack, Staples, Newegg, Office Depot, etc. Once you have purchased two DVI-D cables, please connect your hardware as follows;
    Computer ---> DVI-D cable ---> Monitor #1
    Computer ---> DVI-D cable ---> Monitor #2

Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I understand that your notebook is not recognizing the new or old RAM module in one of the memory slots on your notebook, and that your system displayed a CMOS error. Which slot on the system board is affected when you insert a new RAM module, and is it inserted by itself? I would be happy to help you, but first I would encourage you to post your product number for your computer. Below is a is an HP Support document that will demonstrate how to find your computer's product number. In addition, it will also help if you indicate which operating system you are using; and whether your operating system is 32 or 64 bit. The more information you can provide, the better!
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Which Windows operating system am I running?
Is the Windows Version on My Computer 32-bit or 64-bit?
Please re-post with the necessary information, this way I will be able to research this further for you. I look forward to your reply!

  • Sony VAIO laptop not recognizing video ipod

I just got a new Sony VAIO laptop. I plugged in my ipod, and it recognized it as an ipod and everything. I went to go install it, and the stupid windows hardware installation wizard couldn't install it. I have tried numerous times and it still can't. Now when I plug my ipod in, neither My Computer nor itunes recognizes it. The latest ipod updater doesn't recognize it either. However, the ipod itself has either the "charging" or "charged" icon on it. It charges like normal when connected to the laptop. I have yet to see it say "do not disconnect" when I connect it to the laptop I am using USB to connect the ipod. I have tried all of this stuff too and it didn't fix the problem: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301343

After three days and countless hours that I will never get back, I finally figured out how to get the computer to recognize the ipod and work like it is supposed to. If you go to the device manager and it is showing up with a yellow question mark next to it, open it up and if it is giving you a code 28, try this.
Go to this thread, it helped me and maybe it will help you.

  • ARD on my laptop not displaying both monitors on my desktop

I'm running ARD 3.2 on both my Macbook Pro laptop, and Macpro desktop. Both are running the latest version of Leopard. My desktop has dual monitors, and it seems before I upgraded to Leopard, ARD on my laptop would display BOTH of my desktop monitors (scaled down, of course). However recently, it stared to only display the desktop's primary monitor, and not even detect or display the second. I've been pulling my hair out trying to find a relevant setting, and searching the forums for someone with this issue. Does anyone know what's going on? Please let me know. Thanks in advance!

Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.

do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1

  • Using iMac and Macbook at the same time (not as 2nd monitor)

    Hi all,
So I have an iMac (2013) and a Macbook Air (2012). I do NOT want to get a Macbook Pro and an external monitor. Here's what I'd love to do:
If I have both computers up and running on my work table, I'd love to be able to transition between them as seemlessly as if the Macbook was a secondary monitor. However, I want to access the Macbook Air's harddrive and contents while doing so. Example: I have Skype running on only the Macbook Air, a call comes in, I want to be able to mouse over from the iMac and take the call. I also want to be able to drag and drop content between the two computers (without using AirDrop).
Ambitious, I know, but is this possible? My understanding is that Target Mode means that I'm only using the screen, not the actual computer, so I wouldn't be able to run seperate software on the 2 computers. And I'm not sure an ethernet connection is possible because the Macbook Air doesn't have one. Any WiFi software solutions?
As always, thanks for any and all input!
    Best,
    Rob

You can do this with the application Teleport

  • SSD with caddy on Lenovo B50-70 Laptop not recognized by Windows 8.1

    Hi all.
I just bought a B50-70 laptop and I thought I upgrade it with a SSD. I bought a caddy and a 120GB Kingston Hyper X Fury and I installed it in the DVD-ROM slot after removing the DVD drive. The problem is that Windows 8.1 does not properly detect this drive. Under Disk Management in Administrative Tools, the drive shows up with a down red arrow and when I try to create a MBR on it, an error message pops up with an I/O error. I have the latest BIOS firmware from Lenovo.
A Windows 8.1 installation disk does not recognize this drive as a valid on to install the OS on. The SSD works fine in another PC and it is properly detected by the B50-70 BIOS. My question is: does the B50-70 actually support a SSD via a caddy instead of the DVD-ROM? What can I do for this drive to work?
    Please help!

Thanks for the hint. However, opening up the case to reach the HDD will void the warranty for the notebook.
Really? How's that? Do you have any sticker (paper or plastic) anywhere or covering some of the parts that you would have to disassemble in order to reach for and change the HDD? Unless you have one of those, I don't see how it could void your warranty.
Didn't you face the same problem when changing the DVD-RAM drive with the caddy?
I'm more interested to know if there's a specific issue with this laptop and caddys before I start thinking about waiving the warranty and tinkering with it. I found a similar issue on a dutch forum: http://gathering.tweakers.net/forum/list_messages/1600861  which might indicate a recurring problem.
I don't know about caddies that much, but isn't there a SATA to ATAPI kind of connector for it? I mean, did the DVD-RAM drive have a SATA connector just as a HDD has? Or is there a small controller over there, in your caddy, which converts from SATA to ATAPI.That might be a problem, in my opinion, however, I did not study this potential incompatibility issue with the adaptor, but it might be suspect.

  • L430 not recognizing external monitor

I just switched companies. I've had two other, older versions of Thinkpads. When I plugged them into my home monitor (actually the KVM) via the external VGA port, the thinkpads would automatically recognize it as a monitor and extend the display. It would also keep it there when I was switched away on the KVM and returned.
My L430 isn't doing that. It won't recognize the monitor as a monitor. Rather, it forces me to connect to a projector. Worse, it will not remember context. If I switch away via the KVM, put the computer to sleep or hibernate it, the next time the computer is awake and the KVM is switched to it I have to reconnect to the monitor all over again, including moving my windows back to it again.
What did Lenovo mess up in that, is there a switch I can change to get the same recognition of an external monitor I've had from two previous thinkpads?

Do you have another cable you can try? Are you near an Apple store? You could probably take the drive and your computer to a nearby store and ask them to try the hard drive with one of their computers.
There is one other place to check to see if the computer is even seeing the drive at all.
Connect the hard drive. Open up *System Profiler* (Applications>Utilities). In the left-hand column, click "Firewire." Does your hard drive show up there at all?

  • System is not recognized by monitor

for about a month, the system would freeze after about 6 to 8 hours of use. The screen would be filled with small rectangles and the only way to get out of this was to turn off the power at the front botton blue ready light, pushing for about 4 seconds. The monitor would say "sytem will turn off because of no RGB signal, andd sure enought the monitor would turn off. It would work again the next day for 4 to 8 hrs andd then same problem. This went on for about a month. Now it's totally not working at all, as soon as I turn the power on the fans come on at full speed, the green light is on in the back and the blue light comes on right away in front, where normally it would be orange until the system was ready to go and the blue light would come on. I have done the hard reset, pulling even the power cord for a few seconds and as soon as I plug it back in the computer tower, the blue light comes on right away and the fans are at full blast. I have had this computer for over 10 yrs, never changed anything in it. Just opened it up last night and vacuumed it very carefully with power cord off. Could it be that the cmos battery is dead and would this create this kind of problem? I have never replaced it. And if I do replace it do I have to do anything to restore the computer to it's operating form? I am not a computer wiz but I am fairly handy and good with instructions.  Would appreciate your help. Thanks. JP

    Hello @paparaut ,
I understand that after 10 years your monitor is starting to have issues with recognising your computer. I am providing you with some steps you can try below:
Step 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall
Step 2. Hold the power button down for at least one minute
Step 3. Plug the power cord back into the monitor and then into the wall outlet (not a power bar or surge protector)
Step 4. Press the Menu button on the monitor
Step 5. Navigate to the Factory Reset option and select it
Step 6. Try different cables between your computer and monitor.
If the above steps did not resolve your issue you can try the monitor on a computer or other device to see if the issue persists. Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836.
