Laptop problems after reformat

Hi all,
After formatting my laptop and re-installing Windows 7 I am having problems,
1. Both shift keys do not work
2. And the audio doesn't work dispite the drivers being installed.
HELP.
Thanks in advanced
Chris

HI @chrisjd2
I grasp that after formatting your notebook and reinstalling Windows 64 bit you are having an issue with the audio and the keyboard.
Did you do a recover or install from a Windows disk?
Have you done all your Windows updates?
Have you ran the HP Support Assistant ?
Try updating the keyboard driver in Device Manager.
Here is a link to the software and drivers for your notebook and Windows 7 . Please ensure you have the recommended drivers and updates installed.

  • Problems after reformatting

Had problems so Disk Utility said reformat. Saved entire disk to external drive then erased and re installed Mavericks 10.9.5 Now there is no icon for the HD on the desk top so I can't drag any files back from the external drive. Please help

Thanks Niel. Although I am an old hand with Macs I missed one very important thing. I was looking in the System Preferences not the Finder Preferences. I don't remember in 25 years ever changing those!! Sorted.

  • Istallation problem after reformatting HD

I am running my imac off snow leopard on an external HD.  I reformatted my internal HD and want to put Lion on it.   But the Install Mac OS X Lion page does not allow it as an option. What is the best / easiest way to get Lion installed on the internal Hard Drive?

Boot from your Snow Leopard disk. Open the App Store application. Sign in with your Apple ID. Search for "lion." Purchase and download the Lion installer. After the installer downloads (will take a few hours as it's a 4 GB file) I recommend you first do the following:
    Make Your Own Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Lion application. After Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing Lion.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the InstallESD.dmg disc image file into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable Lion installer that  you can use without having to re-download Lion.
You can now use your USB installer to install Lion on all of your computers. You can now run the downloaded Lion installer except instead of installing over your Snow Leopard system click on the Other Volumes link in the installer, select your internal HDD to use as the destination for the Lion installation.

  • Windows XP/Solaris 10/laptop - Problem after to install recomended patches

    Hi,
I have a Toshiba laptop with a HDD 40GB. Tow partitions: 20GB for Windows XP and 20GB for Solaris 10 3/05.
1.- Windows was installes first, later with a boot linux CD I use fdisk to resize the disk and create a new partition to install Solaris 10.
    2. I installed Solaris 10 perfectly and I worked for more than 1 year this way.
3.- When I turn on the laptop a menu show me and let me choose from where to boot, Windows XP or Solaris.
4.- Now, I got the Solaris 10 Recomended bundle of patches from EIS-DVD (may302006) and I decide to update Solaris 10. I loged into Solaris 10 and in Single user applied the recomended bundle of patches. It become with the new boot loader GRUB and this just let me start Solaris.
5.- format sees the disk with 20GB for solaris and from fdisk utility I could see the Windows XP partition and the Solaris 10 partition as Active.
6.- I setted the Windows partition (1) as Active and reboot the system.
7.- Now I cannot get anything. The laptop turn on and no display is show, nothing.
Someone of you can helpme with this?
Thank you for comments and experience.

Well, I found a doc #73412 where teach how to enable Windows XP partition with boot loader GRUB.
But my problem is my laptop don't start because the active partition defined with fdisk from Solaris, doesn't have the Master Boot Record and don't show anything on the screen. I am trying to get access through the function keys, but I cannot.
    Any suggestion??

  • Installation problems after reformatting

So I reformatted my iMac G5, and I'm trying to install leopard on it. But whenever I boot from the disc, it brings up the language selection screen, I click english, press next on the introduction screen, accept the terms of service, and it goes to the where would you like to install leopard screen. But, nothing shows up on that screen for me to select from. Do I need to format my hard drive a certain way? I noticed that there were options like Macintosh Extended (Journaled) and other options. Does it have to be one of those specific ones?

first start disk utility from the utilities menu at the top. does your drive show up? if it does try reformatting it again. the format should be mac os extended journaled and the partition scheme should be APM. to set the partition scheme click on "options". then quit Disk Utility and proceed with the install.

  • Syncing problems after reformatting

I recently had to reformat my computer due to a virus and have just loaded iTunes back onto it. When I plug my iPod in, I get a message saying it is synced with another iTunes Library and if I want to sync it with the one on my computer I have to wipe it.
How can I sync my iPod with my iTunes without wiping all the songs off it? I'm using the same computer through the same connection as I was before.

If the reloaded iTunes is different to what you have on the iPod then when you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it: Managing content manually on iPod
If your reloaded iTunes is the same as what you have on the iPod simply press "Erase & Sync", the content of your rebuilt iTunes will sync to it, the iPod will be re-linked to your library and you can continue to use it as you diid before.

  • WiFi problem after upgrading to Windows 8.1 Lenovo R400 ThinkPad

I have this problem after updating to 8 to 8.1
Right after updating to 8 to 8.1, all of a sudden my wifi stops working. I used my philips external wifi usb stick and now I'm able to get the internet going.
However if I disconnect my philips usb I no longer get the internet because the built in wifi that came with the R400 ThinkPad no longer works. I went through the device manager and under properties it tells me, 'Device not working properly' however it is up to date.
Im Running Windows 8.1  64bit  Laptop Lenovo R400 ThinkPad

    Hi Matti,
    Thank you for replying back!
I suggest you to reinstall the Windows 8.1, as all the windows driver will not update, if you have upgraded the Windows 8 to Windows 8.1.
Please download Windows 8.1 separately and reinstall the OS, I hope this may resolve the issue.
Note: I am not suggesting for clean installation, only reinstalling the same OS.
Do not update the drivers from ThinkVantage system update utility. I suggest you to uninstall the current drivers and download the drivers manually for Windows 8.1 and install it.
Below is the link to enter the downloads page and download updates accordingly, please click on "Select Product" then in "QUICK PATH" enter the MTM no. select the exact model.

    Hope this helps!

  • After reformatting hard drive, iPod syncs very slowly with iTunes

A couple of months ago I had to reformat my computer's hard drive. I keep all my music files on an external hard drive. After reformatting, the man who did this for me reloaded iTunes for me and imported all my music back into my iTunes library.
It seems that since that time, when I sync my iPod to the iTunes library, it takes many times longer than it used to. Maybe something else happened to my iPod or iTunes and the reformat is just a conincidence, but it really does seem to take three or four times longer to sync.
I have iTunes 7.4.1.2 and my iPod is an older one, a 40G with dock connector
Also, I recently bought some audiobooks to put on my iPod. I only had about 600megs available so the iPod would not sync. I then removed several Gigs from my iTunes library. When I click on the "music" icon under "library" it shows that I have only a little over 29G used which should leave well over 5 plus Gigs available for the new music. But when I try to sync the iPod, it gives me the message that I have only approx. 600 megs available. What's up. I never have had this problem before and I have had the iPod for several years.
    Any ideas or suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Dennis

I actually learned yesterday that Apple didn't put USB 2.0 in their Macs until G5... something I was VERY irritated to find out. Turns out they were betting that Fire Wire would take off instead of USB 2.0, so they only equipped their machines with USB 1.1. So as a result, my iPod is unacceptably slow. Other nagging problems like this are convincing me that I'll have to get a new Mac Pro in the coming year, but for the meantime I think I'll be buying a USB 2.0 PCI card.
    Thanks for your response.

  • Grub won't install after reformat from gentoo install (error 18)

Previously I had gentoo installed with grub in the / partition in sdb2 (hd1,1).  I got through the arch install after reformatting that jfs partition except grub wouldn't install because it said the "Selected Cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS".  I didn't change any partitioning so I don't understand how that would be possible.
I ran fdisk to fix the partition order, but it didn't have anything to fix.  Another oddity is that when I try to boot up, I get a grub command prompt with no errors, and that mapping is different (sdb is hd0).  I can't really change my partitions, because sdb1 is a 1.5+ tb partition and I don't have room to backup the data.

Well I found a workaround for my problem.  It's not ideal, but I installed grub to sdb1, which is a home partition instead of sdb2 (my /).

  • Major problems after ICS on my Bionic

So I've had the Bionic since it was released and have never had any major problems with it.  It wasn't until a few days ago when I woke up to a notice of the ICS update finally being available, so of course I pressed on Install now.  I ended up going to sleep again and waking up later to a frozen screen.  I did a battery pull since it was just frozen on the unlock screen, and after it booted up I was having issues with everything.  Half of my icons were gone, neither of my text messaging apps worked and would force close randomly.  I kept getting random reboots while just staring at my phone, sometimes many times in a row.
I ended up taking it to a couple different Verizon stores, the people at the first one told me they haven't heard of this problem nor did they know ICS was even out for Bionic yet, the second store was like "all you can do is FDR".  After being hesitant on doing that since I didn't want to lose anything, I finally did it.  After the restore, it hung on the "preparing system" screen for at least 2 hours before I finally did a forced restart.  After that it decided to continue with everything...things were going okay for a little while, until I started to reinstall my apps.  Then I started getting random reboots again, force closes on programs, and horrible battery life.  I decided to give it a couple days to maybe settle in, and well, I thought it was better, but last night I started getting random reboots again and force closes on a lot of apps.
This is getting extremely irritating as I cannot use my phone much in fear of it crashing or rebooting itself.  In the time it took me to type this, it has restarted 2-3 times, which is why I'm glad I have a laptop instead of having to type this on my phone.
Is there anything I can do to fix this? Or should I request a replacement phone?  I have not rooted nor installed anything that changes system settings, and these problems only started after the ICS update, so it is not anything I did to my phone.

I've got the same problem after the update 3 days ago. The homescreen keeps closing and reloading - that takes >10 seconds every time. This update made my phone unusable. I can't get to anything because the interface keeps rebooting. I tried restarting it, taking the battery out and factory reset. Nothing helped - it works fine for about 5 minutes and starts messing up again. I can't even answer a call on it because it just freezes when I use any interface features. OMG... Motorola never again!!!
I'm taking it to the store lets see what I can get out of them. Who is testing these updates? Monkeys? That's what causes people to switch to iphones.

  • Whining Problem After 7 Days Of Use

I am experiencing a slight wining problem after only having the computer for 7 days. The funny this is that when i pick up the computer with both hands the wining stops. I think apple is having a grounding issue with these new laptops. Also the wining s sounds like its coming from the left side of the keyboard. Any suggestions? I already installed the keyboard update.
    Thanks,
    Dmitry

Now that you have the whining and have installed the keyboard update, you'll probably have to use the QuietMBP application.

  • Problem after 10.6.6 update! MDS running from the start on activity monitor

    Hello,
I have a iMac late 2009 and yesteday <unfortunately> I did the update 10.6.6! Before everything was working great cause I care the system with clean my iMac and other applications everyday and mostly I use recording programs like Pro Tools. After update the restart came and iMac's CPU was jumping at 20-30% without touching anything! I saw on Activity Monitor and <mds> was running! I want to ask what is that and how I can remove it and not running all the time. I close it from Activity Monitor every time the system starts but I want to remove it and don't see it as it wasn't before! After reading other topics, I did verify and repair permissions from Disk Utility and Mac Osx disc but mds starts when system boot.

This problem started happening to me on both my iMacs as well. I have a brand new 27" 3.06 Core2Duo which started to experience boot and shutdown problems after running the 10.6.6 update. My 21.5 3.06 Core2Duo (have had for just over a year) is suffering quite a bit more. My 21.5" iMac has Bootcamp installed, as mentioned in this thread and at the following thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12968046#12968046
I had noticed extremely sluggish behavior and many cases of the spinning wheel of lost hope. I run MenuMeters, so noticed a higher than usual CPU utilization - looking into Activity Monitor, mds was taking between 30% and 50% of my CPU.... ordinarily that shouldn't be a problem, but since that is Spotlight's indexer, I imagine there was IO contention. I plan on removing Bootcamp this weekend (don't really use it anymore thanks to Parallels 6).
Additionally, I have experienced horrible WiFi performance on both iMacs since updating. I have seen a few mentions on the Internet about this, but no real official acknowledgement. My icon in the Menubar indicates that the connection is still solid, however, I'm unable to resolve websites, etc. I assume that it is losing its connection momentarily to my router, and not reresolving with DHCP upon reconnect. This problem seems to be pretty repeatable when I use Fast User Switching... Anyone else having this problem? I have ruled out my router, as my Windows box and Linux laptops have zero issues. I hope Apple is resolving this issue -- making me eat my words when I told my wife that we HAD to go Mac since its so much more reliable!
    - Paul
