Laptop Screen Issue

I have a lenovo T540 laptop. The problem is that my laptop screen will not completely work. What happens, beginning from startup, is that the laptop screen works completely normal, shows the usual lenovo loading screen, then once it reaches the point where is is supposed to show the desktop background(where you sign in.) It changes to a dim black. My external screen is black as well as though it was extending the screen. I can click, then sign in, and access all of my files after I change the setting to second screen only, but I would like to be able to use the laptop screen as well.
If anybody could help that would be great.

It's not a virus. If the Geek Squad where you live thinks that then I wouldn't recommend ever taking it back to them.

  • T520 External Monitor/Laptop Screen issue

    Hello,
I have a T520 with a docking station.  There is an external monitor connected to the VGA port in the docking station and I have the laptop set to only use the external monitor.  However, when I close the screen of the laptop and put the laptop to sleep, and then when I open the laptop again, the laptop monitor turns on and mirrors on the external.  So basically, I need to set it to only use the external every time the laptop starts up.
Is there any fix to keep the laptop screen off while it is docked?
    Thanks.

    Hmmmm,
Many docked users only use and external monitor. For those not sleeping while docked is the typically setting.
there is the Fn F7 or F8, can't tell which to toggle  displays. However, there should be a when docked configuration profile. Have you tried Lenovo support on this as to where it is. It should follow those setting each time it senses its docked.

  • XPS 12 (9Q33, Mid 2013) Laptop Screen Issue

The issue started occurring just few weeks before the end of warranty. My laptop stopped detecting the the internal screen in Windows. When booted to Windows with no other screen connected, the internal screen is blank. If the external screen is connected during booting, internal screen is enabled but with settings like resolution taken from the external screen causing everything to be shifted to left and the external screen is blank. In fact it seems that Windows thinks the external screen is internal as touches on internal screen are still working. BIOS, Windows recovery, Windows booting are correctly displayed on the internal screen - the problem is with Windows logon screen and further. Also when connected to the external screen, Windows doesn't show internal screen in the dropdown in the Screen Resolution menu.  When using Ubuntu, the OS correctly recognises and works with internal or both screens. I tried reinstalling vanilla windows, next used Dell Recovery to reset to the initial state and nothing helped - this is why I think this isn't Windows issue but hardware issue that affects Windows. I followed some advices from the Dell support portal and tried to install the firmware update (XK8DT) but got "AuxUpdate MFC Application has stopped working" error and couldn't proceed. Installed all drivers including the BIOS update from the Dell website - nothing helped. Run the diagnostics from F12 menu - they all passed reporting no problems. Restored BIOS defaults - no difference. Run Online Helpdesk tests, no problems detected.
The biggest problem is that I thought the problem is with Windows initially and waited to reinstall it due to being busy at work and not having time to back up all my files and was very disappointed to realise it is not a software issue 3 weeks after my warranty ended.
Here are two videos I recorded to demonstrate the problem:
    cs_setInnerHtml('video_ccae9f5a-be4c-402a-82d6-a4c87d2c76a3','');
    cs_setInnerHtml('video_cdcdd9d0-3097-4aa1-8d67-7d16970c70cb','');

Since I haven't got any response I will recap the issue:
When I boot the laptop with external screen disconnected:
i can see the BIOS and the Windows loading screen on the internal screen (and Windows recovery etc).
when Windows is loaded i can't see the logon screen or home screen but a blank screen only.
when i connect external screen after Windows is loaded, i don't see anything on the internal and external screen.
When I boot the laptop with external screen connected:
when I boot and the lid is closed, Windows works perfectly fine on the external screen. When I open the lid, the internal screen is still blank, touch works though.
when i boot and the lid is open, Windows is displayed on the internal screen and the external screen is blank. The displayed home screen is broken on the internal screen since it uses the settings like resolution from the external screen, since the external screen's resolution is higher.
In both boot scenarios, when the external screen is connected, the Windows screen properties dialog doesn't show the internal screen, only external.
I reinstalled windows from the recovery partition but it didn't solve the problem.
I run diagnostics from the Dell Support website it all passed.
I updated all drivers including BIOS it didn't help.
I run BIOS diagnostics, they all pass as on this video:
    cs_setInnerHtml('video_cf0d6ef7-1ca1-4fe1-8ca1-7551bf272166','');
I don't know what to do, this happened when warranty was still valid, i followed different suggestions from the support page and thought it is a software issue. Didn't reinstall Windows as i had couple of projects behind the schedule and didn't have time to back everything up correctly. After i did reinstall and found that this isn't a software issue, the warranty was already expired by two weeks.

  • Laptop Screen Issues

My laptop is an HP Pavilion DV7-4190US with Windows 8.1
I thought I should note first that a couple months back I bought a new LCD that worked beautifully, but after dropping my laptop a month ago, a couple of different things happen when I turn on my laptop.
Here's the link to the display pictures I took: Display Issues
The first thing that would happen is that it would run normally for about 2-3 minutes, then the screen would turn white with close thin vertical lines appearing on the entire screen. When I ran the system tests, the only thing it failed was the Video Memory Check (it gave no failure ID). When doing the testing, either very light vertical lines would appear or three columns of solid vertical lines, but at least the tests would continue to run and I'd have control of mouse.
When I connect an HDMI cable, the display issues appear on my TV.
Another time, the screen would turn black and would be covered with blue or green angled dumbbell shaped pixels. There were also times when it would look exactly like a TV with no reception (moving gray/black/white pixelated look) without the white noise.  The screen remaining totally dark is the most recent.
Whenever I completely disassembled and reassembled my laptop, it would always run fine a couple minutes before reverting back to the various display issues listed above.
When I replaced the motherboard, since I was told that that might be the problem (the graphics chip or whatever else that's soldered on), it ran fine for a couple of minutes (saw the HP, Windows logo, and it was readying devices... I was excited as hell), but then the screen became distorted showing a mini version of my log in screen in the middle and corner, all jumbled up.
Any idea what the problem is? Is it the LCD, motherboard, program, or something else?

    Hello Melissa_01,
Thanks for posting on the HP Forums!
I understand the computer display is altered and not correct. based on what you have described, it seems like a connector might be messed up, which probably occurred when you dropped it. I would call HP to perform a full service of the computer. You can also send it to a local repair shop.
You can utilize this website to learn how to contact HP appropriately, based on your region: Contact HP Worldwide

  • Black Laptop screen - inverter issue

I have the same problem, black screen but if you plug into an external monitor the computer works fine. I hear on other social media hp know about this problem and it's the inverter. I am returning mine today !

So I managed to drop my laptop screen and the lcd broke.
I called Dell for a replacement and after they told me the model number and then the $450 price tag I decided to just order the replacement screen for $50 on amazon.
The screen came in today and I went to install it but am having issues and am not sure what the problem could be.
I'm assuming the screen they sent is good and in working order so the only problem I could think of is an issue with the cable/ribbon but would like the community's feedback.

  • Screen Issue with HP G7000 laptop

    Hi there,
I bought a second hand HP G7000 laptop preinstalled with Windows Vista Home Premium x86 a few days ago, the problem with it was that the screen wouldn't light up even when plugged the laptop was plugged in using the AC adapter which I also had to buy seperately as the original one was misplaced and only cost me £10 for a compatible one off the Internet, the screen wasn't shattered and showed no signs of wear and tear, I took it to my local PC repair shop for £40 in which the contacts behind the screen needed connecting back up and with a little soldering for some other parts of the repair, however when I tookit  back to my place the screen lit up fine in which I decided to perform a factory restore to make it feel like it was brand new and that it belonged to me. After restoring the laptop successfully, I noticed that a lot of stuff was a little out-of-date and decided to update it to make it compliant with the latest security fixes as well as the latest bug fixes i.e. to upgrade to SP2 etc, however upon updating and turning on the laptop every so often the display kept going funny i.e. black and white and wouldn't display anything clearly in which I had to keep forcing the laptop to shut down with using the power button in which I don't like doing as this will corrupt the hard drive eventually, however upon researching this problem on the Internet I stumbled across this forum thread http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f108/hp-g7000-screen-issue-529809.html using Google describing a very similar problem to me, the problem not only seems to be with tilting the angle of the screen but also the surface in which the unit is placed down on, I've tried various surfaces including my USB fan cooler, glass and wood and all produce various results from time to time. So I guess the answer is to place the unit down on a flat surface that isn't shiny and screen not tilting when using the laptop? I thought the purpose of a laptop was to make computing mobile regardless of what surface you place the unit  down on and what angle you have the screen at. Your feedback and suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    RocknRollTim
P.S. I also suspect that the problem is related to interference and lighting conditions as well as heating conditions and the battery as the battery sometimes retains its charge whereas sometimes it doesn't and have to use the AC adapter when this happens, don't know whether flashing the BIOS has helped the battery to retain its charge though.

    Hello @RocknRollTim,
I understand that your notebook computer is experiencing an issue with the display screen as well as keeping a charge with the battery, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
To further diagnose the integrity of your computer's battery, I recommend following this document on Calibrating the Notebook Battery (Windows Vista). This should help re-synchronize the battery with your notebook.
Because the display intermittently stays on the screen when moved a certain angle, I believe the display panel cables are defective. According to the Maintenance and Service Guide for your computer, this part can be replaced with a camera (462455-001) or without (454932-001), and can be found from the multiple vendors below:

  • My laptop screen goes black when i plug in an Hdmi cord

Initially I had both my tv and computer off. I connected the dvi to the tv and the hdmi to the laptop and turned them both on. I had no issue using my laptop as i tried to sync the computer to the TV. However i must have accidentally hit something in the graphics options as my laptop screen went black. I unplugged the hdmi cord from my laptop and the screen came back up. But now for some reason everytime i plug in the hdmi cord to the laptop the screen goes black. When i take it out it the screen comes back up. Did i change something that is causing this to happen? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have pretty much the same exact problem and setup as DaveA1.  I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop C55T-A5123 which I just purchased a few months ago and when I connect my laptop to my SONY TV via the HDMI cable the screen on my laptop goes black and the TV says no signal.  It was working just fine up until about a week ago when I was watching a movie through my VLC player and then the screen flickered a couple times then video went completely out and I've never been able to get it to come back even once.
Here's the specs on my laptop:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834114907
So far I have tried on two different TVs, swapped HDMI cables which work on my other HDMI devices, system restore and attempted to update various different drivers.  I am curious to find out if Dave was able to find a solution to his problem.

  • Random laptop screen Black out / Turn off .

     Hi,
first of all my laptop is : HP Pavilion dv6-6160se Entertainment Notebook
    to the problem now
A few days ago my laptops screen started  out of a sudden shutting down/turning black( no lights at all ). This was happening while using the laptop at random. The screen  had no lights, and if i use a flashlight on it there is nothing. like its turned off completelly.
Before this happens. Ths behavior varies. Sometimes it flickers from my desktop to a black screen then back on and some times not. Most of the times screen changed to a radom color (green mostly) then becomes black/shuts down.
NOTE: The laptop keeps runing, i can hear the videos playing so it probably isnt a gpu chip or gpu issue , music and games.
I searched the web for all kind of reasons that this could happen and tried some of the fixes .
Here are everything i tried and all or the details i could accumulate in past coupe of days:
    1. If the screen flickers , blacks out and then turns back on i get a message that gpu drivers have stopped working and recovered (  on both amd and intel ).
    2. If the screen blacks out, on rare ocasions if you close the laptop lid and let the laptop go to sleep , when waking up screen works again ( noticable due to screen moving)
    3. I tried installing 4 different drivers all with clear install. ( didn't work)
    4. I tried to  to recover system with restore point. ( didn't work)
    5. I tried to lower the screen brightness. ( didn't work)
    6. tried this trick:
    Turn off laptop
    Remove battery
Hold the power buttong for 30-45 seconds
Plug-in the charger ( dont put the battery in )
Turn on laptop and see if it works.
    Very Noticable details:
    7.  Since  on of the rare fixes requires to move the lid  i tried shaking the screen a bit or pushing it slightly to different directions. This actually  does the trick and turns the screen back on ( i am right now typing  this after using this "trick"
So, with this one as a hint there are a couple of stuff i have in mind but i am not sure  and need help since i am not a technician.
    a) There is a loose LCD cable and when i type a little vibration moves it and ends up in a black screen.
    b) I read that if you use a flashlight and you cant see  your desktop it means its a bad inverter.
    c) Can the inverter have a lose cabe instead of the lcd ?
That's all the feedback i could give you that i can recall now.
Currecntly the screen looks ok ( maybe its the certain angle it has after i moved it  so i would aprecciate a fast reply before  it goes black again
EDIT: Tried to play a game for a few mins and i got the black screen again. Closed the lid  so the laptop goes in sleep mode then opened it and it worked. Just for the records.
EDIT#2: Just tried to play a game again. got the blackscreen, shaked the screen a bit and it worked but for the 1st time i get the message " Application has been blocked from accessing graphics hardware" , Can it be that its the GPU after all or maybe drivers?
EDIT#3: Tried to play a game again and it seem to trigger the issue . ( i am currently running the laptop with only the intel drivers installed)
    thanks in advance
    Sincerely,
    Ntas

    Hi @Ntas
I have read through your post and it seems there are a couple of possibilities, and I noted that you have already tried several of the things I would normally suggest.
I will however post some of those links anyway for you to review, it is always possible there may be something in one of them that may have been missed or may inspire an idea of the cause. Since you mentioned that sometimes just moving the screen will cause the problem or make it disappear, that does seem like either a loose connection or maybe something like pressure on a part of the display causing the issue.  Of course that last part may just mean the display is on its last legs, but hopefully not.
First I will give you a link to the service manual, to help you check the connections. Just be careful to read the sections on precautions, to protect yourself and to prevent any other damage. This manual is also useful in that it lists all the compatible parts, so if the display is defective you could use this guide to help order a compatible replacement if you choose to do so. Hello chrispyw,
If your content is still being displayed incorrectly, I would check the resolution setting for the built in display with this article:
OS X Yosemite: Adjust your display’s resolution
If it keeps happening whenever you use AirPlay then I would use this section of the following article to reset the display system:

    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.

  • Multi Monitor messes up laptop screen?

I have a 15" Retina MB Pro, got it when they first came out.  Had the display replaced with the Samsung after the ghosting issue.  But this happened randomly before that, and now it's every single time.
I have a 24" 1920x1080 external monitor I connect to via HDMI.  I also have, on my laptop screen, some icons on the left edge, top edge, and right edge, so I can hit a few things here and there without having to minimize whatever I'm working on at the time if I need to do something else.  These are mostly just some folders and text icons, not apps.
But what happens is that when I plug in the external monitor, the icon positions change.  And it's not consistent.  Sometimes they change so it's like the external monitor is just part of a virtual monitor, and my top row on the laptop moves to the middle of the laptop and extends across the middle of the external display.  Sometimes when I plug in the external monitor, my "actual" desktop shrinks up to a small spot on the top left, like some crunched version of my actual desktop.  Other times that happens, as well as getting a small silver plane shape from what would be the "dock" on that tiny screen.  Now, regardless of what happens, my entire screen on the laptop is still usable, resolution isn't changing, and the entire desktop on the 1920x1080 external monitor is usable - it's just the desktop that gets totally screwed up as far as the icons go.  If I unplug the monitor, they revert back to "normal" on the laptop display.
It used to just happen once in a while.  Then it started happening more often, and now it's to the point where I may have to unplug and replug the HDMI 70 or 80 times to try to get the desktop to not screw up like this.  At this rate I'll wear out the HDMI port in a month or so.
Any suggestions?  One of my zillion google searches for this turned up someone who specified a plist file to delete, which I did, but that didn't solve the issue...
If it were at least CONSISTENT on way or another (screwed up across both screens, or always giving me that mini fraction of my latpop desktop on the top left of the retina display) it wouldn't be as bad as this, espeically since sometimes it *DOES* work as expected - I plug my external monitor in, and there's the second desktop waiting for me to drag stuff to it.
No, it's not set to mirror.
Thanks for any ideas, this is driving me absolutely nuts since I waste so much time on it every day.  I'm about ready to nuke the laptop and rebuild everything from scratch but that's such a pain, and would just make me think of my windows days when I used to do that far more often than I do now...
MBP is current (10.8.3) wiht all updates, 8GB RAM and quad i7 processer model.

sorry did not completely read your post hehe
try to check the monitors maximum capabilities, apple can output 1920 by 1200
also check for the wide settings as well if the monitor is a wide one.
also, there are some issues with regards to windows running on mac missing drivers is most likely your problem see link of intel http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-022544.htm#native_resolution
mac on the other hand supports the full 1920x1200 output since its their product

  • White screen issue

I am having an issue with my macBook Pro. The laptop screen is white with what looks to be stripes of the background when I open it, but it is working and functioning at 100% when plugged into my ThunderBolt screen.
    What could be the issue?
I am worried something is damaged. Also, when plugged in the light to the charger does not come on, but it is charging the battery and computer. So confused. It seems liek everything is working the opposite way it should be.

  • White screen issue on Compag

My Compaq is currently displaying only a white screen. The laptop boots up fine and displays fine on an external monitor.
I have taken it apart and reseated the connectors on both the screen and the motherboard with no effect. So I am sure it's not a loose connection.
Before I go and splash out on a new replacement screen, is this an issue that is usually seen when the screen itself is at fault. Could it be the cable? or the connection on the motherboard itself. Is there a way to be certain?
I don't want to buy a new screen and find it's not at fault.
    Many thanks!

    Hello, @Skyfox
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you have a white screen issue with the notebook. I will try to assist you.
With the steps you've taken and the fact it works correctly with an external, leaves only the display screen as the possible cause. That being said, there is no 100% way to know that it is not a cable causing the issue.
    Typical steps for this issue:
    Restart notebook
    Hard reset notebook
    Test with external monitor
Reconnect LCD cables and check all other display cables
    Have notebook serviced.
You're at the point of service. This really limits the options, and a display replacement may not correct the issue.
I hope this adds any insight to the choice you need to make next.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

  • My laptop screen displays on reverse direction

    HP Pavilion DV6-2121er
    OS: Windows 7 Home Basic
My laptop screen displays texts and symbols on reverse direction. For example, on the desktop "My computer"  - as "retupmoc yM".
I did reinstall my OS, but it didn't help me.
What problem may be? Please, help me!

I have the same problem.  A more accurate description would be that the display is mirrored...
If I view the reflection of my display in a mirror everything appears normal.
If I view my display directly everything is reversed horizontally pixel by pixel (i.e.. mirrored).
At no point during the boot process is the display correct.  As soon as the BIOS posts the screen is messed up so this issue has nothing to do with the display driver as it's not even loaded yet.
My problem is actually slightly worse.  My display is mirrored and then shifted to the right half a screen length with pixels beyond the right edge of the screen getting wrapped around to the left side of the screen.  You can get a sense of the problem by doing or imagining the following scenerio:
    1) Take a screen shot of your desktop.
    2) Open the screen shot in photoshop and mirror it (not the same as rotating or flipping)
    3) Print the screen shot and tape the left edge of the paper to the right edge forming a tube
    4) Make the tube flat again by cutting it down what used to be the middle of the image.
