Laptop screen plays back jumpy video, CRT looks fine

I have a strange problem:
When I play back video from FCP (6.0.6) in either the canvas or the viewer and the window is entirely on my laptop screen, it looks jumpy, sort of like if the playback frame rate was set to dynamic. If the window is even partially (like 10%) on the CRT, the playback is fine. The jumpiness goes away if I set the playback quality to Medium.
I have been editing with this setup for a year or so and only recently noticed this. I've recently upgraded to Snow Leopard, but FCP is still 6.0.6. Is this a Snow Leopard / FCP version problem? It seems odd that it would only exist on my laptop's LCD screen and not my CRT.
System Details:
I have a 2.6 Ghz Macbook pro with 2gb of ram. The DVI out is connected to an old LaCie Electron Blue 22" CRT. I typically edit with both screens, usully putting the canvas on the laptop screen and the viewer on the CRT. My playback framerate is set to full and video quality set to high. My capture scratch drive is an OWC Mercury Elite Pro set up as a RAID 0 and connected via Firewire 800. My sequence setting is ProRes 422 1440x1080 and the footage was shot with a Canon XH A1. Some was captured as ProRes and some as HDV, but the problem happens with both kinds of footage.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
- Bruce

I suppose that makes sense. I do wonder, though, why it would have this weird behavior where it only does it if the entire window is on the laptop screen. If just a little sliver of it is on the CRT, then it's fine. Also, why would it prioritize the performance of the second display over its main display?
Is there any way to boost the graphics card performance? Would more RAM take some of the pressure off the graphics card, or are the tasks strictly separate?

I have the LifeProof case for the iPhone5, and I remember the instructions saying that any protective screen cover should be removed before enclosing the phone into the case, but I left mine on with no ill effects.
But I should have taken off the back protective film, which was covering the video mic!

  • How to play back AVCHD video files without jerkiness result?

Hi all, I have an iMac 27" 3.06Ghz as well as the new MacBook Air 13 1.86Ghz, and both have 4GB of RAM. When I tried to play back AVCHD video files (*.mts) recorded from my Canon HF200 HD camcorder, the play back is always jerky and choppy. I have tried various software like Perian for QT, VLC, MPlayer Extended, all have the same result. However, I can play back other 1080p files like MKV and MOV just fine.
Is the jerkiness problem that I am seeing due to underpowered hardware? or is it I am not using the correct software? Note that I am not trying to edit HD videos, I just want to be able to play them back smoothly. I can play the same files on Windows 7 natively without any issues.
I am curious if any of you have the same problem. Please help!
    Thanks in advance.

    Swaza,
Just thought I would jump in and share some experiences with .tod and .mod files.
I too have the JVC GZ-HD7 camera and I can confirm that the new version of the MPEG-SC 1.93beta will open and convert .tod to .mov for use with iMovieHD. I am not sure that the files can be used with iMovie08 since I have not tried, but it will work in iMovieHD just like any other qt or .mov file import.
Also, you can use the QTpro plugin that came with the camera (should be on the CD as the only MAC software available.) This will allow you to open the files in QT and convert them to any other format needed. This plugin unfortunately does not allow QTpro to open the older .mod files of previous JVC cameras. For that you can still use MPEG-SC.
In my experiences over the last few weeks, having mistakenly dumped all of my footage onto my hdd as I used to do with my older JVC cameras, I am now stuck with 3 hours of footage on my HDD as .tod files. I have been struggling to find the right blend of codec type, compression amount, fps, and quality to convert these files in an acceptable resolution (1920x1080 full - another mistake since iMovie08 will not import this quality but will import the 1440 CBR mode.) Converting these files is a nightmare and has become a stain on my otherwise wonderfu lexperience with this new camera (It is an awesome camera despite what negative stuff the "Canon fanboys" are saying!) It takes an unbelievably long time to convert. And you will find that when viewing these files in QT either as .tod or even after converting to .mov, they will be jerky and stutter. I believe this is more to the fact that the files are just really huge. Playback inside of iMovie06HD was perfect for me though.
Hope this helps out and I hope others may offer solutions as to what codecs they are using and what settings they are using to keep the quality as high as possible when converting these files.

The desktop image is fine, taken from the exact same pool of jpg photos.  However, as soon as the slide show screen saver comes on, the images are scrambled.  What is it about the apple screen saver algorithm that scrambles the pics?

  • [SOLVED] Rip or play back audio/video DVD

Recently I bought a DVD that contains audio content as well as video content. On the packaging it says that it is in the "DVD Audio/Video" format.
Today I wanted to rip or at least play back this DVD on my computer. When inserting a "normal" video DVD into the disk drive, the DE which I am using (Gnome 3.12) displays a notification that offers the possibility to start playback of the inserted DVD. No such notification was displayed for the DVD in question.
Since anyway my original intention was to rip the DVD to my hard drive, this didn't bother me much and I started looking for a program for ripping DVDs. This research resulted in me installing dvd::rip.
Unfortunately, upon trying to the read the table of contents of the DVD, dvd::rip displays the below error message:
Job 'Determine number of titles' failed with error message:
    Command exits with failure code:
    Command: execflow tcprobe -H 10 -i \/dev\/sr0 && echo EXECFLOW_OK
Output: libdvdread: Could not open /dev/sr0 with libdvdcss.
libdvdread: Can't open /dev/sr0 for reading
    [[31;1mtcprobe[0m][31;1m critical[0m: unrecognized filetype for '/dev/sr0'
While googling for problems with DVD playback in Arch, I came across some generic solutions that didn't solve the problem, namely adding my user to the audio, video, and optical groups as well as installing packages for handling DVDs (libdvdread, libdvdcss, libdvdnav).
Is there someone who has managed to rip or play back DVDs in the "DVD Audio/Video" format?

Can you mount the disk and see its file system?  If it is a DVD, you should be able to do this, regardless of and CSS.
Is there any chance this a VCD (Video CD)?

I fixed it in the following way.
-Search for utilities on the HELP option on the top taskbar
    - Go to utilities and open your audio-midi-setup.
    - check your input and output properties
    - Change input and output 44100khz and 16-BIT for both.(these are the most common properties)
my sound and video are not ouf sync in photo booth anymore.

  • Hulu full-screen plays back choppily when sent to HDTV via Mind-DV to HDMI

Hi, all. I searched discussions for a solution to this to no avail. Thank you in advance for any help!
When I have my MacBook connected to my HDTV via an Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter and try to watch Hulu in full-screen on the HDTV, it drops all kinds of frames and plays back very choppily. When I watch the same program on the MacBook display at full-screen, it plays back fine.
I've tried the Hulu website, as well as the Hulu Desktop app. Both yield the same result (i.e. bad).
I set the HDTV's display settings (via OS X Display Preferences) between 720, 1080i, and 1080p, respectively, to troubleshoot. Neither 1080i or 1080p plays back well at all, but the resolution is nice. When I set it to 720, it plays back a lot smoother, but the resolution is awful.
The MacBook specs are below. Any suggestions or ideas as to why this is happening?

I updated Flash player and set the OS X display settings for the HDTV to 720p, and it is acceptable now.

  • Live video capture while playing back another video track?

Is it possible to capture live video while another video track is being played back? I would like to do this for multitrack video recording of music: a) record a video track, then b) record a second video track while listening to/watching the first. Exactly like multitrack recording of audio as in Garage Band, but with video.
A similar question was asked here, but I want to avoid manual synchronization. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11712024&#11712024
As an example, there are lots of multitrack videos on youtube, but you can often tell synchronization has been done manually as the audio and video are out of sync (even if only slightly):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2RA0vsZXf8&feature=related
    Many thanks!

I'm not too familiar with video editing (yet), so please forgive me if I've misunderstood your suggestions. I think what I'm talking about would have to be done post (after shooting multiple video tracks?), and couldn't be done with video switching (live switching between multiple video feeds?). Here's a much better example of what I'm trying to do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGKErn2Zr88
What it boils down to in my mind is precise synchronization of a new capture with something pre-recorded (be it audio or video). If no software can do this (yet), perhaps there's a way to do it with additional hardware, for example playing video on a monitor while simultaneously recording with a camera, assuming the devices can be synchronized somehow?
    Thanks!

Since nobody here can possibly know what is included in "majority suggestions posted for this problem" then your next step would be a trip to an Apple Store and ask for their help.

  • IPod video fuzzy/blurry and juddrey when played back on video editors

i have recorded many videos on my ipod before but the most recent videos have become fuzzy/blurry when i have uploaded them onto video editors i have tried many different editors but all of them made the video qulity poor, fuzy and juddery. when i play them back on my ipod or PC there absolutly fine but as soon as they are in a video editor the become fuzzy.

(PAL would be less than 768x576 pixels)
BUT...why do commercial DVDs (i.e. the ones I rent from Blockbuster) look ok on my laptop? Do they use better compression or something?
A little "better compression" and a lot of "something".
Yes, commercial DVDs are produced by better compressors, but the primary reason for better quality is better original content. Commercial DVDs aren't shot with consumer DV camcorders, while they are shot using a tripod and carefully lit.
MPG-2 works by looking at image frame to image frame variations - things like camera shake and noise due to poor lighting can cause major frame to frame differences in the video stream causing MPG-2 artifacts.
In addition, the commercial content is just a lot sharper to start with - better lenses, 3 chip cameras with more pixels than DV camcorders, as well as no compression of the shot footage (DV stream content is compressed about 4:1).
It the old computer saying: GIGO
    Garbage In - Garbage Out
Now I'm confused! If a monitor has more pixels shouldn't it give a better picture?
Only if your source image has the same number of pixels. Your DVD only has (PAL) 768x576 pixels and if you 'blow them up' to something like 1280x1024 (or larger) on your computer monitor the image with 768x576 pixels will look very soft.

  • Pixelated images while playing back a video shot on my iPhone4s

Shot a video of my kid playing soccer and when watching on playback mode on either iphoto or imovie it comes out all pixelated images...

The size of the hard drive that the OS resides upon is not of concern as long as it has enough space for you operating system, the applications and a swap file.
The reason you NEED to keep you media files on a second drive is that it is TOO MUCH to ask of one drive to deal with all the system level read/writes AND to also seek, find and play all your audio AND video AND renders AND graphics and who knows what else you've got going.
to get the best possible playback.
    1. Run Diskwarrior and Disk Utilities to make sure the files/directories are clean.
2 Disconect the system from any network.
    3. Turn off any screen, power, disk power savers
    4.Make the file self-contained
    5. Have ONLY the external drive that the media resides upon connected through the firewire bus.
6.Shut down and reboot the machine before you start.
    7. Pray.
    Cheers,

  • Can't hear my audio clip when i play back my video. Why?

I recorded an audio file in QuickTime, moved it to iTunes, then imported it into iMovie. Then I dragged it to the Project area, under my video clips but you can't hear it when playing the clip. What am I doing wrong?

Well, in the "System settings" menu I have these options:
Default imput: Built-in microphone Default Output: Built-in output
Built-in input System Output: Built-in output
(In neither of the imput/output menus I see built-in audio.0
In the "Properties For" menu immediately below the "system settings" menu I get the following three options:
    Built-in Microphone
    Built-in Input
    Built-in Output
(No "built-in audio" option either in this case.)This menu is currently set to built-in microphone, and I just found out that if I set it to built-in input, the audio output below appears 'output not supported' and greyed out, and if I set it to built-in output, the audio input below appears not supported and greyed out, whereas the audio output now appears to be supported. How come? It seems that I cannot have both at the same time. Is that normal?
One more thing: I don't know if this is important, but I think I most probably is:Whenever I start Logic Pro in my computer a dialogue box appears warning me that "The previously selected audio interface is no available" and that "The built-in audio inputs and outputs of the computer will be used instead for this session."
    Thanks again Caramby!
