Laptop shut off unexpectedly

HELP! I normally keep my laptop on sleep mode. Recently my computer has been shutting off on me after a few minutes that i turn it on.
At first i thought it was just the screen that would go black, perhaps the light needed to be adjusted. I tried adjusting it and it was still black.
Then i noticed that my computer had shut off on me. I close it and it turns on again like if i put it on sleep mode.  So i begin to use it
again, and it turns off after a few minutes! I tried shutting it off completely and turning it on, same thing happens.  I don't know what to do
I'm trying to avoid taking it to Apple genius because i know its quite expensive. Does anyone have any suggestions?

When I open up Itunes, whenever I downloads songs, play my music on Itunes, or I sync music, my laptop will shut down unexpectedly.
It makes me believe there might be a virus in my system. Is there anything I can do? It is very annoying when it just shuts down.
Thanks in advance for any help you might give me.

  • New iPhone 5s shut off unexpected and won't turn back on

I just received my new 5s. I activated it. Made a phone call. I was downloading my apps, and using them, when the phone shut off unexpected. I tried to turn the phone back on, the apple logo appeared, then it went to the waiting circle for a couple of minutes. After a couple of minutes the screen had a blue screen for a second, then it went back to the waiting circle, then it turned off. I've tried turning it on a couple of times with the same results. Help!

    Hello Keith,
Congratulations on your new iPhone 5s!  I would be concerned too if my iPhone shut off unexpectedly and would not power on.  I found an article with steps you can take when you encounter an issue like this.  I recommend following the steps below:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 15 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

My system keeps shutting off unexpectedly after updating it to OS X 10.8.2 (12C60). is there anything that can be done to correct this?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Macbook pro charge cord stopped working & shuts off unexpectedly

    Hello,
All of a sudden, my charge cord has stopped working - I'm not sure if it's my actual computer or the cord.  It does not light up at all anymore and the battery icon says "not charging" sometimes.  It also will shut off unexpectedly and when I manually turn it on I get this message "can't verify the identify of the website" and the clock gets set back....help

Does your MBP get HOT when you are playing games, as they use quite a bit it the way computing cycles and generate a lot of heat.  I had this issue with my kids machine, try rasing the MBP up off ahy hard surface you mat have it on while playing. (I used 2 1"X1" strips of wood the increase air flow around the machine. The exhaust vents are in the back under the hinge, keep yhem clear. This simple fix seemed to work, no more problems. There also cooling trays with fans that are commecially avaiable. Are your fans spinnig up to cool the MBP? If not you might want to try a smc reset which controls the fans.

  • Laptop shut off during hard drive reset

My laptop shut off during a hard drive reset and now it says to do a system reset but I don't know what to do

Sure sounds like a hardware problem to me. To verify that you would need to attempt to restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media.
If you failed to create it, you can obtain it from Toshiba. Scroll down to Get Recovery Media here.
For instructions, see the section Restoring from recovery media, which begins on p. 57 of the User's Guide.

  • Why does my ipod classic shut off unexpectedly

Why does my ipod classic (80 gb) shut off unexpectedly?  This happens often and more so when the earphone (any earphone) moves.  The only time it does not shut off is when my ipod is lying flat on a table.

    Hey madelinefrommiami,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
After reviewing your post, it sounds like it may be a hardware issue if moving the earphone shuts off the iPod. A frustrating situation for sure. Take a look at this page for information on available service options.

  • Shutting off unexpectedly

Twice recently my powerbook has shut off unexpectedly while I was on Safari. It restarted back up ok. Any thoughts? I did get a cheap replacement battery awhile ago, but it shows as being fully charged and has worked ok before this issue started happening.

You bought a junk battery, apparently. Replace it with a real one.

  • Laptop will shut off unexpectedly

Roughly one and a half years after I got my dual core computer it started shutting off randomly. Since this began it has been wiped twice and we've replaced the battery, charger, motherboard, and fans but within a week it always starts turning off every couple of days again. I've taken it in to office max who we bought it from and they didn't fix anything concrete before sending us over to Toshiba warranty. Toshiba then did the same thing, replacing one part at a time and then shipping it back insisting it was fixed (but it would shut down the moment I turned plugged it in and turned it on)
Finally they said if it wasn't fixed "this time" that it would be replaced for free. So we sent it in, they fixed nothing before sending it back, and we called to set up the replacement. They played games and insisted it needed to be sent in again to be sure. This was of course a load of garbage but my father who was on some heavy meds at the time agreed and sent it back in. This then happened for a 3rd time and they held onto the computer for the remainder of the warranty. Since I couldn't convince my father to follow up with some course of action my computer is still messed up but I have no means to get it fixed. I tried getting it repaired at Crystal pc but after wiping it (this was the 2nd time) and cleaning the inside they said it should work. It will stay on long enough for me to use it now but every few days it turns off and will turn off multiple times in the same 24 hour period. A man working at Crystal pc recommended changing the power setting to remove sleep mode (as I could prevent the shutdown usually by hitting the power button a few times) but now instead of switching to sleep mode in place of the shutdown it will just shut down.
I'm new to this forum but if the issue of getting the computer replaced is still available or anyone has technical advice either would be appreciated.

For anything warranty I would private message Peter the moderator with you model and serial number and any repair info, RMA numbers that you have because he is the only one here that can help with that kind of issue.

  • MacBook Pro shuts off unexpectedly

So I've had my computer for a while, I think I got it back in March 2006, and around August 2006, I was having trouble with my battery where it would be fully charged, but would automatically shut down when I took the charger out. I went in to the Apple Store and they were able to replace my battery with a new one. Lately my computer gets really hot, so I bought a laptop fan to help cool it down and that helped a lot with how long the battery can last without the charger. This week, my computer began to shut down unexpectedly even at 79% battery life and when I try turning it back on, it'll begin the process of turning on and just shuts down again. As of right now, my cycle count is 246, and my full charge capacity is only 934 mAh. I began to calibrate my battery so I'm hoping it works, but it's not looking so good. I was wondering is there something I can do myself, or should I take it to the Apple Store and if I do, will they even replace my battery? Thanks!

You could try resetting the SMC, but it sounds like you may have a defective battery. Here is the link:
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/
Be sure and print out the article and take it with you, as not all Apple employees are familiar with this particular battery program. But if your battery meets the criteria, you should be able to get a free replacement.
However, it sounds like you may have developed a heat problem, and this may well be contributing to your battery problems. There are a couple of things to check:
First, run the Apple Hardware Test and see if you get any error codes that might indicate a failing thermal sensor (SNS) or fan (MOT). Use iStatPro to check that both fans are running and that they speed up with the heat and that both run at about the same speed.
Second, open Activity Monitor and set it to show all processes and look for some process which is using a lot of the CPU. Sometimes these things will run in the background and cause excessive CPU usage and heat.
    Good luck!

  • Laptop shuts off periodically whether attached to charger or not.

Hello, my laptop (15.6" 2000-bf69wm Laptop with AMD E-300 Accelerated Processor and Windows 8 Operating system), keeps shutting off. I use it mostly for streaming Hulu/Netflix. Its usually always connected to the charger. Lately it shuts off for what seems like no reason. It doesnt seem to be overheating. I was told it could be that fact that i have it plugged in 99% of the time. I bought the laptop last feb. It started shutting off within the last 2 months.

Try resting it from the computer
