Laptop shuts down after waking up (SOLVED)

Hi,
I have a Supsend issue with my HP-Pavillion DV6-2155, after an update suspend stopped working. Just after the laptop wakes up it force shuts down and I have to remove the battery in order for it to be able to boot again. I have not been able to find any one else with this issue and I find it hard to diagnose - it does not seem to be somewhat unrelated to suspend. I've tried to look at other suspend problems but I haven't found any viable solution yet.
I use the Fluxbox WM with an Nvidia GT 230M graphics-card and an Intel i5 processor, don't know what other infos could be useful.
All the best,
Jonathan

I couldn't connect this issue to this update since a lot of changes happened during the summer. Now I happily switched my whole system to systemd and that seems to have solved the suspend issue very neatly. I'm marking this thread as solved. Thanks for pointing this out to me though.

When I close the lid or press the sleep mode button, my laptop goes into sleep mode and everything is ok. However, when I open the lid or press the power button to awake it... after a few seconds, my laptop shuts down! I just formatted my laptop to the factory settings hoping to fix the issue, but it persists. Please help!

When any problem persists after recovering to factory settings, it's often indicative of a hardware problem.

  • Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop shuts down after about 1 minute

Despite being plugged into AC power, my Lenovo 3000 N100 shuts down after about one minute. It boots properly but suddenly shuts down. I have not used this laptop much since purchasing it in 2006 and have seldom used it on battery power alone. Any suggestions before I buy a new battery? Maybe I am mistaken, but shouldn't the computer work on AC despite a depleted battery?

Hi Charleydog and welcome to the community,
Take the battery out  and unplug the ac.  Hold the power button down for about 15 seconds.  Do it twice.  Then plug only the ac in and see if it fires up.

  • Cleaned Fan, Now Laptop Shuts Down After 1 hr.

I own a pavilion dv5 1140tx laptop and for the past few months it has been really overheating and so I decided to open it up and clean the fan. This laptop is really poorly designed since you have to completely dismantle it to get to the fan. Like I had to take out the HDD, Monitor, Mothe Board, Optical Drive, everything!!!
Anyway I cleaned out the fan which had a considerable amount of dust in it (its 3 years old) and then I peiced it back together. After that it seemed that the fan was running a bit more smoothly and there was far less heat coming from the laptop, I turened it on and everything works the same but after about an hour of use it shuts itself down just as it would if it were overheating, but it isn't anywhere near as hot as it used to get.
I set it to a balanced power setting, and changed the BIOS so that the fan isn't constantly running and that seems to have helped it but it still shuts down after a while!
Might it be that the heat sink isn't close enough to the CPU and so the CPU over heats before the heat can disapate into the heatsink? Anyone else have this problem?

    Hi Mario,
Before cleaning the fan with an air duster can, I restored the computer to factory settings. It was only after that my laptop started shutting down shortly after start-up. It stopped doing that eventually, but what I did to prevent overheating is I sprayed the fan's underneath the laptop with air from an air duster can to remove any possible dust clogging, thereby causing the fun to work much harder than it normally should, and it seems to be running fine now. I haven't had any problems with start-up, and in fact, when in use, it doesn't make as much noise at is use to. My laptop used to ramp up the fan speed quite often because not enough heat was being expelled from the laptop. Luckily, it doesn't do that anymore.
Doing further research led me to a video  called: "Reducing Heat and Fan Noise in Desktop and Notebook PC's" on HP's support page.

  • Shutting down after waking up

hello- my ipad is shutting down after i wake it up. i restored it and it's still doing it. anyone else have that issue? how do i fix? thanks!

You say you "restored it." Does this mean that you have tried restoring it to factory settings?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If you have done that, and the problem is continuing, then it's a hardware issue. You'll need to contact Apple for assistance.
I note that you used "virus" as one of the tags in your post... be aware that there is no known malware capable of infecting an iPad that hasn't been jailbroken, and even on a jailbroken or otherwise compromised iPad, resetting to factory defaults would remove all known malware. Whatever's going on, it's not malware of any kind.

  • Laptop Shuts Down after Turning it On

    Hi,
My laptop likes to shut down within 3 seconds of turning it on. The research I have done indicates that the fan is not operating, thereby causing the unit to overheat, but I wanted to see if there were any other reasons why this could be happening.
I restored my computer to factory settings a few days ago, and it only started happening after that.
I tried running a diagnostic by running a "PC Health Check" after pressing F10 on startup, but I didn't have the option to do so.
Apart from trying to do a PC Health Check, there are no errors popping up on start-up.
My laptop is running Windows 7 and it is the Pavilion DV6 model from 2010.
Any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

  • Laptop shuts down after 5 seconds

Macbook Pro 2009  - apple logo startup screen appears, it chimes, the fans start up, but the bars don't fill on the logo and after 5 seconds it blacks out. even when plugged in. battery is fully charged. what do i do?

Your computer's problems go beyond the Recovery CDs. It does not sound like the computer powers on for any length of time. Can you go into the Bios and have the computer remain on? If not, this is not a software issue, but a problem with your hardware. M65s are an old computer, so it has to be out of warranty. If the computer is only staying on for a minute, I suspect that you may have a short. Remove the main battery and any other attached hardware and try again. If it still fails to stay on for more than a couple minutes, it is going to need to be repaired. Considering how old the computer is, it would probably make more sense to replace the computer than repair it.

My new laptop shuts down after 20-25 minutes when on battery.  The last time, the screen went completely distorted with colorful lines before shutting down.  Can someone tell me why this could be happening?
I am getting it replaced with an Acer the first thing in the morning.

    hi usmanz.
sorry to hear that but could be hardware/software issue.
to make sure it's hardware, can you perform clean windows installation by pressing one key recover button first?

  • My hp dv6700 shuts down after 1 second. i recently upgraded the processor to intel t7500.

I recently tried to upgrade the processor of my HP dv6700. I upgraded to an Intel T7500 and after reassembling the laptop and trying to power it up, the laptop shuts down after 1 second. The computer turns on, the fan makes a brief noise, and then the machine shuts down. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hey, did you apply thermal paste to the new CPU? It may be shutting down because none of the heat it getting blown out by the fan. The thermal paste is a conductor of heat to allow it to be transferred to the copper which will get blown out of the laptop by the fan.
I also have a DV6700. May I ask how a motherboard melts down? I have had absolutely no problems with my laptop, and I've had it for 5-6 years.

Heating issues. For all the dv9000 series with nVidia video including your model there are well-known overheating and video/motherboard failure issues very well documented on the internet. Just google "HP dv9000 nvidia video problems".

  • [Solved] Loud pop noise, then laptop shuts down

So, I heard a loud "pop" noise like what happens when the power goes out, my laptop shut down. When I turned it back on, it didn't show that it was charging. So, I plugged in another power supply, when I used another one, it showed that it was charging. So, did my power supply go bad, and will msi replace it?

I agree with this one. If AC adapter is from them too just like the laptop (some don't provide AC adapter mostly on used one) then they should replace it. It will be considered a factory defect.

Sounds like it may be a blown capacitor. As long as you're still under warranty, MSI should replace the failed AC adapter. I'd say to just contact their support and see what they say.

  • Laptop breaks down after new BIOS installation

    Hi ,
My laptop HP 2000 - 2d11x is  nearly a year old now. My problems started last month when my laptop started overheating and shutting down randomly. Now my laptop is completely unusable. I do not know what happened to it but I suspect that the incompatible BIOS installed recently in my computer caused its break down.
The first problem I had with this laptop is its overheating . I bought a usb cooling fan for it but the overheating persisted. Then, one day my laptop randomly shut down. For many days the laptop shuts down every hour or so when I use it. Then one day I took the battery out and started using the laptop without the battery. It worked continously and did not shut down but the overheating problem got worse.
Couple of days later I inserted the battery and the whole unit shut down. I tried again and again but my laptop keeps shutting every 5 seconds after I inserted the battery which is half charged. I cannot charge it properly because the laptop shuts down. It went on till my battery was out of charge and I can not use it anymore.
During this time my laptop only works when I plug it without battery.
I thought my battery was the problem so I stopped using it and asked HP Support for replacement since my laptop is still under warranty and I have no money to buy a new one. The agents I talked with in chat support, denied my requests for battery replacement. The first one promised to call me and said he talked with his supervisor about my problem. I waited for 48 hours but he didn't call or email me. The next agent I chat with remote accessed my computer and installed BIOS. I do not remember what kind of BIOS was it but all I remember is its a BIOS. The agent asked me to try and put the battery but the laptop shut down. It restarted and I waited a long time before it started. When it was finally restarted the agent and the connection was gone. My battery problem was still not solved. The third agent I talked with again asked to remote access my computer. Then he said that HP cannot replace my battery because battery shipment is prohibited by Bureau of Customs.  My father bought this laptop abroad in the US and we are living in the Philippines. I was frustrated and thought I will just have to use the laptop without battery.  A day later something horrible happened. My laptop did not start anymore even when I plug it with the adapter! The lights blink and goes out after 10 or so seconds when I click the start button.
Now my laptop is broken, black screen and completely unusable.
I researched a bit and realized that HP and overheating issues always went hand in hand.. I'm suspecting that the BIOS update was improperly done and the overeheating fried my motherboard. If this is the, then it's the HP technician's fault for making things worse. I hope they replace the laptop or atleast fix it. They're not taking imported laptops seriously and this really angers me because HP laptops by default come with the ITW (International Traveller's Warranty). I need your advice on what to do.

    Hello armela,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand your system was overheating and shutting down, and after a BIOS update you are no longer able to start up the notebook.
Here is a great document to walk you through restoring the BIOS to the original factory version and settings: Restoring the BIOS
If that does not resolve the issue, here is a good place to start troubleshooting startup problems (choose which link best represents your issue):
Computer Does Not Start and the LEDs Blink or the Computer Beeps
Troubleshooting Black Screen Displays with No Error Messages During Startup or Boot
Once you are able to get the system to boot, you may want to take a look at this document to troubleshoot the overheating issue, so we can prevent this from happening again: Reducing Heat Inside the PC to Prevent Overheating
If you are still experiencing problems take a look at our Global Warranty and FAQs. You will want to contact support in the region which you are currently located, in this case, the Philippines. You can reach them by phone at this number: 1-800-88-8588 - Mon-Fri 08:30 - 17:30 (excl PH)
