Laptop shuts down when lid closes

My 15" powerbook has been acting up the last few days ever since I downloaded the last group of updates. When I close the lid to put it to sleep the entire computer shuts down. When I open it and start it up it gives me the message that the computer was unexpected shut down. Any ideas?

Sorry, then I have to give up
Hopefully an other user can provide more assistance to you.
I would give Apple a phone call and ask for support, since it seems to be affiliated with the replacement battery (at least I would state so to get support).

  • Urgent: Shut down when lid closes problem

My Mabook pro / mid 2010 / Yosemite 10.10 shuts down when lid closes. This is new in the last few days, not after any system updates. It wont restart after lid opens again, unless repeatedly holding down power button for long periods. Strangely, the sleep light is on before I open the lid, but once lid is open, it's completely off.
Does anyone know the cause and/or fix for this? I'm really worried it's the beginning of the end, and I rely on this machine for work and need to travel in a few days! Thanks in advance for any trouble shooting tips.

Just to clarify; when I say "this is new" I mean the problem, not the laptop.

  • Laptop shuts down when I close the lid

I just recently purchased an HP Pavilion x360. It was working fine until HP did an update and now everytime I close the lid, the computer shuts down and has to restart when I open it. I've checked all of the power settings, including the one that allows you to specify what it should do when I close the lid but having found nothing that helps. Any suggestions? Robby

For you to have the best experience in the HP forum, I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I understand that before you did a HP update you were able to close the lid and reopen without Windows restarting, but no longer. You have checked the power management setting and the option for what happens when you close the lid, but no change. I suggest you do a scan for corrupted files. This process will also try to repair any corrupted files it locates.Go to the command prompt and right click on it and run as administratorType sfc /scannow and press enterWait for this to complete and restart your notebook. Windows 8 has a built in troubleshooter you could also try.Press the Windows key + C to open charmsType troubleshoot performance and press enter.Follow the on screen prompts. If that did not help. you can do a restore back to before you installed the update. You also have the optiion to do a Refresh Your PC to Resolve Problems (Windows 8).  To be on the safe side I would backup your personal data first, to ensure no personal data is lost. You could also do a recovery back to factory.  Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8).  You will receive a prompt to backup your personal files to prevent data loss, if you have not done one recently, I  suggetst you do one now.Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows 8) With the notebook being a fairly recent purchase, you could also contact HP support for assistance.  They can remotely log onto your system to aid with locating and resolving issues.    Please call HP technical support at 800-474-6836. • Laptop shuts down when i close screen

This just started yesterday, I shut my laptop to go to sleep like normal but when i returned a few hours later it was off. I didnt think a whole lot of it at the time cause i routinely reboot and shutdown my computer from time to time. so i turned it back on, did some work, then closed it again before i went to bed. now this morning i woke up to find that my laptop was off again, now i knew i didn't shut it down or anything last night. So i turned it back on once again and i thought i'd try to close it again to see what happens. well, as soon as the lid got close to the magnet i saw the "sleep light" kick on for a split second like it was going to sleep then it was gone. I open my laptop to find that it had shutdown already. i kicked it back on, and figured i'd wait a minute to try it again. so i got online and check some emails and i tried it again. sure enough, it was barly closed long enough for me to see the screen light go off before i opened it and it had shutdown again. So yes, i tried it one more time but this time i figured i'd watch it a lil closer. It's almost an instant shutdown as soon as the screen closed, i have no idea where this came from or why. please help

ok, i already had another account on my computer made for some trouble shooting i did a while back. and once again the computer went to sleep just as it should both ways. so now that we've narrowed it down to some settings or software on my account, what should i look into? i have recently done some summer cleaning on the computer, i went through my folders and cleaned out a lot. i also went into my Library's folder and got rid of a lot of junk. I'm sure i only deleted what was made by some of my software and other misc. files that i would never use. things like my cache for final cut pro, some backup filters, fonts, and brushes for photoshop, and alot of GarageBand crap that took up over a gig and i never used it! Whats funny is a did that a few days ago, but the computer didn't start acting up until a day or 2 later.
    Thanks again and again,

My macbook wont shut down when I close lid, how do I prevent this?
This had happened before and I seem to recall having to disable blue tooth.
    Is this correct?

It's not suppose to shut down when closing the lid, it's supposed to sleep.

  • MacBook Pro shuts down when i close the lid

    Hey,
My MacBook Pro shuts down when i close the lid.
It started to do this one or two times, but now it is every time.
I have the latest battery update, so this should not be the issue here..
    Any sugestions??
I have started to suspect the it might be some faulty conecctions or somthing..

If it's unable to go into the proper sleep state for some reason then it will do that.
Run /Utilities/Console and click 'All Messages' top left then close the lid, wait a minute then open it again - if it's shut down then reboot and open Console again and check the latest log lines looking for 'sleepimage' - it should give you an indication of what happened/didn't. If you're not sure what it all means post _just those lines_ here.

MacBook Pro shuts down when I close lid. How can I prevent it?

Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. The power adapter indicator light may cycle off / on once.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • MacBook Air shuts down when I close it

Whenever I close my MacBook, it shuts down instead of going into sleep mode. At first, I thought it was a problem with my MacBook not waking up from sleep at all, but if I use the Sleep function from the drop down menu, it will wake up normally.
I've looked around the community to see if anyone had a similar issue, but most people say they need to reboot it to start it up again, which isn't my case at all. It just does a typical shut down. How do I make it go to sleep instead of shutting down when I close it?

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    bzgrep 'Previous Shutdown' /var/log/system.log*
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.

  • Pre Turns Off or Shuts Down when I close the keyboard

Is my pre screwed or is it OS?
It shuts off, not the version that other people have had where you have to pop the battery (the power button still works to turn it back on) out to get it to restart.  Anyway, it shuts off when I slide it closed.  I thought maybe something loose so I did it very slowly, not allowing it to even go all the way, the minute that the sensor tripped it back into "no keyboard" mode it turns off.
It's especially bad when on bluetooth...happens every single time.
Is there a solution for this.  Please palm, a lot of people are having this problem and there is no answer yet?
Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)

Palm is on deathwatch.  The Pre could have really kept them afloat, but there are too many problems with it.  When I first got my Pre in June, it was awesome!  Everything worked great.  But now, I am always having problems with it.  Here is the list:
    1. Pre turns off or shuts down when I close the keyboard.  (I had to make this one the first on the list since it is the topic.)
    2. Pre turn off or shuts down for no apparent reason and the only solution is to remove the battery, wait a second, put the battery back in, then turn it back on.  This takes forever.  Plus, because I have removed the back so often, my Pre squeaks when I am typing (from the plastic).  It is very annoying.
    3. The navigation system has a glitch where most of the time, it cannot find my current location.  The message says to make sure I am in clear view of the sky, but i always am.  There are many posts about this problem in other sections.  There are some solutions, and the often work, but it takes 5 minutes to reset the system.  It is a beating.
    4. The navigation system voice is usually very clear, but sometimes, the voice will skip over the names of streets as she is calling out the directions.  Ex. "Turn right on ________ Drive."
    5. Sometimes the keyboard will stop working.  I have to remove/replace the battery.  Again, this is time-consuming and further contributes to the squeaking problem when typing because you have removed the back so many times.
I like Sprint because I can get unlimited data, txt, and mobile-to-mobile calling for $70/mo.  So, I hope that someone comes out with a great touch-screen phone (not the BB Storm), because I want to stick with Sprint.  If you go with an iphone, you have to get AT&T, which will cost you at least $100 for the same.  That is a $360/yr difference!  I am sticking with Sprint.

  • Shuts down when I close my MB. What's the crack?

I've read a bit about this on other threads but I just don't get it.
My MB has done this about 30 times since I've had it. It's 6 months old.
For the last 3 days it has done it every day. Is it getting worse?
There is no pattern to follow. Just sometimes when I close the screen I hear the chime and I open up to the blue start up screen.
Is there any known remedy to this? It's doing my head in.

When you close the lid, the MacBook should go to sleep. If you choose "sleep" from the Apple menu, does the MacBook shut down then as well?
If so, it's unlikely you have a hardware problem (since no hardware is involved with the selection of the menu option). You might try try restarting and holding down the "shift" key to startup in "safe" mode. Does it behave the same way in "safe" mode? If not, then you may have a third-party software conflict.
If it doesn't shut down when you choose "sleep" from the Apple menu, it's possible that you have a hardware problem with the switch that tells the MacBook when you've opened or closed the MacBook. Does the MacBook shut down if you put it to sleep first from the menu before you close the lid?

  • How do I get my lap top to shut down when I close the lid?

I have tried to switch on the function that shuts down my lap top when I close the lid but am either dumb or lazy and gave up too quickly.... any help would be greatly apprecated.

    Thanks Poikkeus
My mac goes to sleep when I close the lid pretty quickly but when I open up the lid it opens up again where I left off.
Some nice person burgled me some time ago and stole my mac so I want to force my mac to close right down so when someone else opens up they are forced to open up in guest.  I can then track my mac without risking them accessing my personal details etc.
