Laptop sleeping while working and won't wake.

When using the battery, laptop keeps going to sleep WHILE I am working.  Several times, it would not wake and I have had to manually power down.  Any ideas?

The problem is caused by a faulty temperature sensor in the track pad. Because of the bad sensor, the computer sees an imaginary spike in the temperature and decides it better go to sleep instead of allowing your computer to fry.
This is a common problem with PowerBooks, one that Apple won't own up to and pay to replace everyone's top case and logic board. After all, that would hurt the bottom line.
To find out if this is the problem, do this:
1. Open the Terminal program and type this: cat /var/log/system.log | grep kernel
If you see a line that says May 7 23:49:45 AlBook kernel[0]: Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep. then you have a problem.
2. Install the application Temperature Monitor from http://www.bresink.de/osx/0TemperatureMonitor/download.html and run it while you work. Open the History Window and you'll see graphs. Right before your computer drops off into its narcoleptic fit, you should see a spike in the trackpad temperature. If you see this, then you have this problem.
3. You can do a temporary fix (find it here: http://makel.org/blog/20/), which disables the thermal control system, but then you risk overheating and eventually causing your PowerBook an early demise. Otherwise, you have to replace the top case and logic board. That'll run you close to USD$1000, maybe more.
This is a fairly common problem (just Google "PowerBook narcolepsy" or "Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep" and it amazes me that Apple is risking the goodwill of its loyal customers by not replacing their crappy engineering for free.
So then you have to decide if you want to waste the money replacing the top cover or buy a new laptop. What I am going to do is buy an external hard drive, move my files to the backup, then buy a new laptop.

    Since yesterday my MB pro suddenly goes in sleep mode while working and won't wake up. After reset the MB Pro goes into Sleepmode befor I get the log in screen. After resettin SMC and PRAM I can log in but after a few minutes, againg deep sleep. I'ts not a software isue I think because when I use my MB Pro's harddrive by firewire as the startup disk on an other macbook it works fine. anyone knows about this problem?

    It sounds obvious but are you sure your power adapter is ok and the battery is charged. The behaviour sounds a lot like low battery sleep.
    Press the check button on your battery pack - do you get plenty of lights?

    Ops I replied to myself in error.....
    Tom:
    I performed the steps indicated but this morning when I clicked the mouse and hit the space key and clicked the track pad again as before nothing happens.
    I hold the power button for a few seconds and the screen fills as if the computer was normally awakened but it is locked up.
    Then I have to shut it down with the power button  and then power it up as a reboot.
    Not good...SMC reset didn't work....Throughout the day yesterday I put the computer to sleep and woke it up normally.  It seems to be a overnight problem.
    Am I going to have to shut it down everynight?

    My Macbook pro, (late 2010) sometimes will sleep and won't wake up. then the sleep light flashes.What's the problem

    Hi I've been following this thread (along with a different one on the same topic). I've been having the same problem with my ibook. I can add that I have no problem with startup. It's just that the screen "goes to sleep" unexpectedly and may operate normally for a few minutes or a few hours at most. Opening and closing the lid or restarting seems to cause it to awaken but then usually for just a few seconds or minutes. If it is connected to another video display that display continues functioning fine even though the computer screen is blank. In addition the desktop is there and visible faintly or if totally blank can be backlit through the apple logo and can be read. I've had my logic board replaced twice under the extended warranty and assumed it was that but now I'm thinking of the reed switch. Apple refuses to consider any further work under warranty as the last repair was in Jan, 06 and they claim only a 90 parts warranty and the machine is from 03. Any thoughts before I cut the wires? I have reset the pmu, run cocktail and disk utility. Other than the sleep issue the machine works fine. thanks Ronda or anyone else who has any ideas... Dave

  • MacBook screen goes gray and won't wake up from sleep - 10.6.2

    We have a MacBook Alum running 10.6.2 with 4gb ram.
    We recently upgraded to 10.6.2 from Leopard and this issue started to happen.
    It seems that as the MacBook goes to sleep or goes to the screensaver mode, the screen goes gray and won't wake up from sleep or screensaver mode without a hard reboot.
    Is Apple aware of this issue? It did not happen with the previous version of Leopard. This issue arrived when we upgraded to Snow Leopard. Other than the sleep issue, SL is rock solid. Kudos to Apple for producing a great OS!

    Hi GrooveDaddy,
    Have you contacted AppleCare via telephone to make them aware of this issue? It definitely doesn't sound like normal behavior. What sort of troubleshooting have you done so far on the issue? What sort of settings do you have on your screen saver? Password protected? Custom iPhoto slideshow?
    What if you manually sleep the machine by closing the lid or engaging it via software (via the Apple menu) does the screen have the issue in both scenarios?

    Well, iCloud has nothing to do with this.

  • IPhone acting weird and won't wake from sleep.

    Hi All,
    I have a first Gen. iPhone and loved it until last weekend. The screen went white and wouldn't turn off, reset, hard reset, nothing. Even though I start with a full battery I can leave it connected to my Macbook overnight and after hours and hours the BIG red low battery symbol will be displayed with a sliver of red and the connected to a power source shows. After a normal charge time it will show a full charge and work fine as long as it stays hooked to the USB port. After that sometimes I can unplug it and it will work fine as long as I don't let the phone go to sleep if I do I have to start the whole process of waiting hours for the iPhone to be recognized by my Macbook. Other times it goes to sleep and can't wake up, no reset or hard reset or hooking it back to the USB port will wake it up or cause it to be recgonized by my Macbook.
    Also sometimes as I'm trying to wake the iPhone with the Home+sleep button procedure the screen will come alive and show scrolling vertical lines instead of the all white screen.
    Any ideas? Oh ya', the iPhone is about 5 weeks past warranty
    David

  • Fan runs on HIGH and won't wake from sleep--it freezes!

    I have a G5 (Power PC, g5, Dual 1.8 GHZ with 1.25 GB SDRAM, and Mac OS X 10.4.10-phew!) and I recently: added more USB ports using a PCI card, and purchased a non-Apple 22" widescreen display.
    Prior to adding USB ports, I was using a hub that ran off its own power source, and used a Samsung 19" monitor.
    My situation now: everything starts up fine, but ultimately the fan will kick in at SUPER HIGH and won't stop. I can put my Mac to sleep--which stops the fan noise--but then it won't wake up.
    I have run the Apple Hardware test and everything checks out OK. I've also reset the SMU according to directions from this forum; AND I've vacuumed out all the dust bunnies.
    The fan runs so loud and so high it sounds like it's an airplane that's about to take off.
    Short of bringing in my Mac to a technician, can you recommend anything? My Mac has been glitch free up until now.

    I have a G5 (Dual 1.8/2.5GBSDRAM,10.3.9) that I'm worried about. After stepping away from my machine for an hour, I came back to it and it sounded like the fans were about to blow they were revving so high! My screen was frozen and non-responsive, so I did an immediate shutdown via the power button. I let it sit for an hour or so and it would not reboot (Got the power on chime but nothing...except the three repetitive quick pulses of light from the power button). I knew that it meant it was a RAM issue. Did the old unplug trick and SMU button trick, nothing. Have 2 original 256MB and 2 6mo old 1GB pairs. Pulled the #2 pair then booted (failed), then swapped the #2's and seated in #1's slots...no luck, still get the three flashes on the power button.
    All the RAM was seated firmly...so I don't think it's the RAM. Am I looking at a logic board or power supply failure? Is there an alternative I'm missing?

  • Crashed while export and won't start again...

    Hi guys, i just want to ask, why my PPro, doesn't want to start, it only shows the startup and then shows the application with white screen, after that it closes by itself. no error message or anything. it started when my laptop crushed while i exporting the movie. the screen went crazy. so i shut down the laptop. after that my PPro CS3 won't start. i try to uninstall and reinstall, still the same...now i've tried the CS4, but still won't work. still remain the same. what's the problem...can anyone help me?it's been 4 months i tried to solve, but still got nothing. please help me...

    Ok...sorry, i'm new in this kind of things. or i can say, this is my first posts in this kind of forum...
    I'm using Laptop. it's ASUS F8VrOS : Windows vista Home premium;
    Platform : intel centrino 2;
    Processor : intel core2 duo P8600 2.4 GHz;
    Chipset : mobile intel PM 45 Express + ICH9M + wiFi link 5100;
    Memory : DDR2 800 MHz, 2 GB;
    Screen : 14,1 inches  WXGA+/WXGA;
    Graphic system : GPU ATI mobility radeon HD 3470, 256 MB memory;
    HDD 250SATA; anything i didn't mention?
    ok, the case is, i use Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 before. i was using it doing my personal project, basically only combining .avi video. it's finished, and then i want to export it as a movie. but when it's still rendering, my laptop crushed, the screen went crazy (looked so colorful(u know what i mean?^^)), then i couldn't do anything. so i just shut it down forcefully. since then on, i can't use the PPro anymore. i've tried to reinstall, still the same. the startup screen still appear (the loading of all .prm file), but when the application come in, it directly shuts down. with no error message. i also install the PPro CS4, but still the same...is it my laptop or the PPro?
    any info i didn't give you, just ask...
    sorry, newbie.....
    thanks for amending me...^^

  • PB sleeps while working

    I have just come through hurricane Wilma, and ever since, my PB puts itself to sleep, while I am working, even though the battery says it is charged. It does it even more so when I have it plugged in to the AC adapter. I say the hurricane because it was charging in my RV which is running on generator. I am also afraid that in the dark, my son grabbed the charger from his ibook and plugged it in to my PB, will that hurt it?
    Thanks,
    Garpoe

    Gary,
    This is an example fo my console logs!.
    Nov 8 20:22:36 james-thorns-powerbook-g4-17 kernel[0]: Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.
    Nov 8 20:46:26 james-thorns-powerbook-g4-17 kernel[0]: System Sleep
    Nov 8 20:46:26 james-thorns-powerbook-g4-17 kernel[0]: System Wake
    Nov 8 20:46:26 james-thorns-powerbook-g4-17 kernel[0]: Wake event 0800
    But yesterday thought that i would reinstall the 10.4.3 update from Mac manually rather than on automatic download, I think that has managed to solve my problem as not getting the overtemp signal in my logs anymore and also doesn't seem to be shutting down as much.
    Have you tried updating the system?

  • Fans always @4400rpm, sleeping while working

    I have a 1st generation 20" iMac that has very loud fans and that has recently started going to sleep while I'm working. Needless to say, this is pretty annoying.
    I have...
    - repaired permissions
    - run both Disk Utility and Diskwarrior
    - reset the SMU
    - reset the PRAM
    - checked CPU usage with Activity Monitor (nothing abnormal)
    Using X-Resource Graph I see that the CPU temp is a pretty consistant 68.7 Celcius and that the CPU fan is running at 4400 from the moment the machine is turned on.
    I called Apple support, who suggested that I bring the computer to the nearest Authorized Service Center, which is an hour's drive (Maine) or purchase Applecare. I understand the benefits of Applecare, but want to make clear that this computer needed a Motherboard replacement straight out of the box (with a refurbed component) and has always had problems. It is also in the serial number range of computers in the iMac G5 power/video extended warranty. It seems unfair that Apple should expect me to drive an hour each way to drop off a computer, and then to be without it while it's being fixed (hard to be a web designer without a computer) when it was broken out of the box.
    Does anyone have any advice on software issues that I may have missed?

    Today, after continuous problems with the iMac going to sleep, and after noticing that some of the logic board transistor's had bulging tops, I re-ran the Apple Hardware Test and got an error for the logic board - 2GMC/3/15: built-in
    Broke down and ordered Applecare. Called Apple support and the rep said, and I kid you not, "Oh, you totally have to replace the logic board." Unfortunately, I have to wait for the Applecare package to arrive in the mail and then arrange for someone to come and repair it. Oh yeah, and it usually only takes 5 days or so to get an appointment.
    Wait! I'm relying on this computer, which has NEVER worked properly, for my business. I just paid $169 for Applecare to have it repaired more conveniently, even though it's in warranty, and now I have to wait for the Applecare package to arrive (estimated 5 days) and then call for an appointment.
    If a vs.1 iMac G5 user has a bad logic board (bad power supplies, bad thermal sensors, etc.) Apple should pick the computer up and deliver it back repaired. If the computer needs to have its logic board replaced more than once, the computer should be replaced. Why can't Apple just do what is right, acknowledge that the vs. 1 G5 iMac had serious problems, and repair them at their expensive and at their customer's convenience.
    This is leaving a seriously bad taste in my mouth!

  • My Ipad stopped working and won't turn back on.

    My ipad stopped working suddenly and won't turn back on. What can I do to turn it back on?

    Assuming that the battery isn't empty (and it can take up to 15 minutes of charging before it will respond), then have you tried a soft-reset to see if that gets it to boot up ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
