Laptop special keys

Hi!
I`m running 32-bit Arch on my Acer 7720g lappy, and i`ve managed to get everything working by now, except for 2 things:
1.Suspending to Ram for more than once (known bug, that hasn`t been fixed yet, Acer fault - notebook doesn`t come up from sleep on 2nd resume)
2.Enabling all hotkeys on keyboard.
I know about "xev", i`ve used it to set my hotkeys that work with the Function key(brightness control, volume control, next/prev song, etc.), they work OK. What doesn`t work are some addition Acer keys, like Email, Messenger and Internet Browser (i`ve marked them on the attached image):
The problem is, they are not even detected by xev. Are there any other ways to configure them? In fact, bluetooth and wireless buttons are enabled and working, but other ones are not... I do have acpi hotkey support installed (as said in Wiki).

It didn`t work either, i get no responce when i press these keys - as if Linux doesn`t even know i`ve pressed them.

  • Slim Keyboard special keys non-functional

Picked up one of the awesome new keyboards tonight, installed keyboard update, rebooted, but the special keys (itunes, dashboard, etc) don't work.
I can assign fn-key to say dashboard, that works, but in non-fn key mode, they do nothing.
    Any ideas?

I have the same issue. Basically, after installing "Keyboard Update 1.1" the special keys above F1-F4 (Brightness, Expose and Dashboard) do not work. I have the keyboard plugged into a MacBook Pro and I expected the brightness keys to change the brightness on the MacBook Pro LCD. The iTunes play/pause and the volume keys work fine, but the previously mentioned ones do not.
You should not have to change the keyboard shortcuts (keyboard pref pane) to get this to work, because if you do, then when you unplug the keyboard (as laptop users do frequently) the buttons will be off compared to the laptop keyboard.
I went into the store today to find out if anyone has noticed this, and all the keyboards attached to the new iMac machines work fine. This must be something with the MacBook Pro's

  • Who succeeded using special keys in KDE?

    Hi,
I'm using Gnome, but I really love KDE.The reason that I don't use KDE is hotkey/special key issues. I can't get my x61 thinkpad's special keys to work in KDE such as:
    Fn+F2
    Fn+F4
    Fn+F6
...No on-screen notification for volume keys and brightness keys
I've tried so many distrospensuse kde, kubuntu, debian, and pclinuxos, but I can't get them worked.
Anyone who is successfully using KDE please advice!
    Thanks!

ewaller wrote:When I was using xfce4 exclusively, I just used the xfce4 services for keyboard shortcuts and they worked perfectly.  You might just go to the settings menu->keyboard and map key presses to actions there.
    That's what I'm doing, and that's what's not working  8-)
It looks like xbindkeys is the way to go.
Thanks all for your comments and assistance.

  • Additional laptop function keys and KDE

Hello everybody. If I install all KDE packages with:
    sudo pacman -S kde
I got native support for all my laptop function keys (like volume control, mute, etc...) with also graphic icons showing up when I choose a function. Of course I also get a ton of other software which I don't need. Sadly to say, installing only kde-base (which of course is the way I want to proceed in order to fully configure my system only with what I need) doesn't provide this functionality. I spent some time looking at all KDE packages with:
    pacman -Ss kde | less
to find out the one I need, without success. Has anyone any idea about the packages I may need to install? Thank you.

  • Change keyboard configuration for special keys

    Hi guys,
I want to change the default behaviour for some special keys when running windows.
I want the Cmd (Mac) key to be the Alt (Win) key and the Fn (Mac) key to be the Ctrl (Win) key.
    Is this possible?

Thanks for your answer Fortuny, but it seems the Ctrl and Alt keys can't be re-mapped using that application... I'll keep searching
Edit: You pointed me in the right direction I found a similar application to the MSKLC called SharpKeys, I was not able to edit the Fn key, but at least a could remap the left Cmd key to be the Alt key.

    my laptop some keys notworking.
tollfree nos. are not working from dholpur

    Hi,
Shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
    Any improvement?

    Hi:
You probably need to install the graphics driver and if this one doesn't work, you are out of luck, and will need to install Windows 8 64 bit.

  • Special keys/buttons on enhanced HP keyboard no longer do anything

The special keys/buttons on my keyboard no longer do anything. ALL ,except for the Mute and Volume Up/Down buttons, do nothing when pressed. The Eject 1 and Eject 2 buttons used to Open/Close upper and lower the drive trays, but now do not.  I tried downloading the drivers from teh HP website but they are older than the ones I got with the computer. I tried installing them anyways but the install keeps crashing with error "If (OSLangDec=="1028" || OSLangDec=="2052" || OSLangDec=="3076") Then".
Any idea why these special keyboard buttons are non-functional at this point?

Hi mikenowo, sry I haven't got any more ideas on this one.
In an effort to bump this back up toward the top of the list, here's a couple more questions for you:  Is ur Vista current with updates i.e. SP1 and/or SP2?  And have you, by chance, disabled the "kbd" services from start up?  (KBD.exe runs the special buttons on the keyboard.  Needs to have a check mark next to it, like this.)
And an observation:  I googled ur error message and, from my brief survey, this oslangdec thing appears to be an hp specific issue with windows operating systems, both xp and vista, a compatability/emulation conflict of some type?  I even found one thread where someone posted a pic almost identical to the one u posted.   Here's the link to that forum thread.   And here's the pic *he* posted (almost two yrs ago).  You will see in that thread that he's not even talking about keyboards; he is having a problem with audio drivers.   This tells me that the problem is not specific to the keyboard driver - but to certain 3rd party driver installation in general?  Unfortuantely noone every followed up with any solution either in this thread or any others I found.  But I bring it up now in case someone else in these forums has any idears.
    Good luck.

  • Handling special keys with no "up" code ?

    Hello everyone,
I don't know where to post this, so I start here.
My laptop (samsung nc10) has Fn-keys that can be bound with xbindkeys, but some other don't send an "key released" or "up" signal, making them useless (because the kernel send auto-repeat for that key, leading to infinite loop when bound to this).
I would have an idea to fix this :
By simply adding an option "-noup" to "setkeycodes" so that the kernel would send the keyreleased automatically for those keys would do the trick.
Does anybody have an input for this ? Would that be possible ?
    and Merry christmas

I think that first you should exhaust all possibilities for fixing this behavior at the kernel level.  If it's truly a hardware issue, where the hardware does not issue key up events, then I think that solutions like the one you have proposed are a good idea.  But if the problem is that the driver that handles these keys for some reason doesn't recognize the key up events from the keyboard, then I think the issue is best solved at the driver level.  This will allow the keys to work for everyone, even those who haven't figured out that some special xbindkeys command is needed to get the keys to work properly.

  • Toshiba Laptop Function Keys not working

Hi: I have a Toshiba Satellite C55-A laptop. It is a year old, and it came with Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1. I recently upgraded to Windows 10, but then after a week I decided to downgrade back to Windows 7 for personal reasons. My function keys (like the brightness up and down, volume up and down, mute, wifi, play music etc.) worked before and worked in Windows 10, but for some reason when I downgraded back to Windows 7 most of them have stopped working properly. When I press the keys what I get is the function of the actuall F1-12 key (e.g. full screen, search, refresh) and not the brightness, volume etc. The special functions only works when I have to press the FN key at the same time, which is kind of troublesome. I also no longer get the useful notification in the corner of my screen when I press the buttons of, for example, what level (4/8 for example) of brightness I'm at or what level of volume I'm at. Solutions I have tried / checked:-I have checked in All Programs > Toshiba > Tools and Utilities > HWSetup > Keyboard, and the setting for Function Keys mode is correctly set to "Special function mode". But it still doesn't work.-I've installed Toshiba Value Added Package.-Function Keys is enabled in Flash Cards. Is there anyway I can get them back to a working state, because they were really useful before, without having to factory reset my laptop? Thanks, Tiffany

You may want to download and install the System Driver from Toshiba support website

  • Using windows XP. After replacing a bad keyboard apple special keys no longer work with Boot Camp 3.2

My Original keyboard (MB110LL/A) was damaged. I recieved a new keyboard (MB110LL/B) from the Apple Store online. Now none of the special Apple keys, volume up, volume down, eject, etc. work anymore. I have Boot Camp 3.3 installed on Windows XP. Boot Camp 3.3 requires Windows 7. I cannot get a replacement (MB110LL/A) keyboard anywhere.

Adding to the above: I also tried plugging in an Microsoft USB keyboard at the point when Windows freezes at the Windows log-in screen. The keyboard is not recognized and the only way I can leave this screen is to power-off the computer.

  • Several laptop keyboard keys not working

    Dear all,
I hope you can help me. Several keys on my HP Spectre 13-3000ea ultrabook occassionally don't work. More specifically, the n,m,h,j,y,u,6,7 keys (if you check your keyboard you see they constitute a vertical area of keys) do not work, most often when the laptop boots from cold or resumes from sleep. I can get them to work by rapidly hitting other keys in the neighbourhood and swiping my finger across these keys. All of the sudden they 'wake up' again and they will work. Sometimes, randomly, they will stop functioning again and the problem appears to become worse.
It is not a software related problem which support seems keen on, since I experience exactly the same problem in Ubuntu Linux and also in the BIOS. I have the feeling it is related to the connector ribbon but I'm having a bit of a difficult time convincing HP Support of this, especially because the occurrences seem random. If you have any ideas on how to solve this problem, please let me know.
Edit: I forgot to mention I never spilled anything over my keyboard and I used a keyboard brush to clean under the keys as well as I could, since the keys are not removable.
    Thanks in advance

    Hello
Test the keyboard using UEFI diagnostics. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03467259&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en#N341
If the keyboard test fails, contact HP Support at 1-800-474-6836 and them know the test failed.
While I am an HP employee I am speaking for myself.

  • Keyboard special keys not  working

I have an older imac (imac4.1?) with a new 2009 wireless keyboard and none of the special function keys work aka the volume keys eject and so on I have done everything I can think of it has OS X 10.6.2 snow leopard and they did not work with my older keyboard or older software I had assumed older software new keyboard when I put the new software on it will work it still dose not work and is very frustrating.
    What am I doing wrong!?
    Thanks for any help.

As far as I know I do but just in case if I had the wrong one selected how would I change it to the one I have?

  • How can I get the special keys on my external Cherry keyboard to work?

    Hi,
so I'd like to get my external Cherry Evolution Stream XT keyboard fully supported. How would I go on about that?
I know there [is a guide on that issue](https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ex … ys_in_Xorg), but how do I know which keycode/number the volume and other media keys on my external keyboard have?
So I found out the keycodes to the "hotkeys" with xev, just as described on the wiki page:
    keycode 122 = XF86AudioLowerVolume
    keycode 121 = XF86AudioMute
    keycode 123 = XF86AudioRaiseVolume
    keycode 173 = XF86AudioPrev
    keycode 172 = XF86AudioPlay
    keycode 171 = XF86AudioNext
    keycode 77 = Num_Lock
Do I have to put them into  ~/.Xmodmap and it'll be fine? I don't think it could work that way since these keycodes are probably only true for the Cherry keyboard, but not hte Thinkpad's own keyboard.

But what's the command I have to enter? I have been googling the commands, but I can't figure out what kind of "action" I have to assign to that XF86...LowerVolume key.
    SOLVED it myself
I coincidently discovered that I had to install asla-utils for the command to work, so I assigned
    amixer set Master 10%+
and other versions and it works. Will have to find some matches for toggling, I guess I'll find them eventually.

  • Sony Laptop: Fn keys won't adjust volume/brightness. How to fix?

Hello. I recently installed Arch linux with Xfce on my Sony VAIO VGN-SZ430N laptop, which has an Fn key that can be used in conjunction with the F keys (F1, F2, etc.) to complete tasks such as changing/muting the volume and adjusting the brightness. I would like to know if there is a simple way to assign the key combinations:
    Fn + F2 Mutes
    Fn + F3 Lowers Volume
    Fn + F4 Raises Volume
    Fn + F5 Lowers Brightness
    Fn + F6 Raises Brightness
Those are the combinations I really use and need. How can I assign these tasks to the keyboard shortcuts specified above? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
