Laptop starts randomly(wont boot from first time)

I own HP Pavilion tx1000 for 2 yrs, it was working normal since now. The problem is - laptop starts from second third or more times.  When I switch it on, only led indicators start working and hard drive, but no initial boot and screen blank. Then i do off and on it again and randomly it boot normally. Then if it loaded system works fine. i'm using Debian Squeeze OS, but think there no matter which system installed. I suspect that it has BIOS problem or some power issue. I know that it is hard to help me with that, but hope someone know approximate reason and do me a favor to give a clue.

Not exactly. The video chip is on what is called a ball grid array. As the chip overheats and cools, the connections to the motherboard (i.e. the array) get brittle and break off so that there is not complete contact with the motherboard circuitry. It can be "reflowed" so that it all gets liquid and all makes connection again by applying heat evenly. The trick is to do it at just the right temperature and monitor the process. It can be done by just baking the motherboard in the oven but that is not reliable. It works better when you have real expensive equipment, but what doesn't work better with real expensive equipment?

  • Is there any way to disable "Checking Your Add-ons" window that comes when user starts Firefox after update for the first time?

we have over 1500 firefox users and its very confusing to them if after update they start their Firefox and this "Checking Your Add-ons" window comes.
It would be much appreciated if it can somehow skipped this or do it silently.

Unfortunately this link does not help.
We currently have 3.6.x versions of Firefox in most computers, and if i do a silent install via sccm to version 12, then if user starts the new firefox for the first time, it checks addons, like java quick starter and browsing protection (f-secure) etc. Second time when they start firefox, it starts normally.
My question is - is there some way to avoid this first run addon compability checking?
I've tried numerous preferences in mozilla.cfg, nothing helps so far.

  • Clunking drive on start up, won't boot from CD

This 2003 Dual USB iBook suddenly started with a clicking noise coming from the hard drive. It won't boot from the hard drive, just lots of clicking.
If I put in the install DVD that came with the machine, eventually it will be recognised and the Apple logo will appear, but after a few minutes a circle with a cross through it appears. The hard drive clicks throughout all this and nothing else happens, just lots of clicking.
The HD is no doubt faulty, but I'm not sure why I can't boot from the install DVD?

The iBook should have come with Install CDs instead of a DVD.
You say you are running Mac OS X 10.4. Do you have the Install disc for 10.4 (which is likely a DVD)?
Sometimes using _Startup Manager_ allows you to boot from an optical disc when holding down the c key doesn't work.
If you manage to boot from the Mac OS X 10.4 disc, try repairing the hard drive from Disk Utility on the Install disc.
If this doesn't work, you could try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless it's been renamed). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if you are able to do a little hard drive maintenance to help things out.

  • G4 Won't start. Won't boot from any disc (OS 9 or Linux).

I recently acquired a Power Mac G4 from my school, as they did not need it. The computer was a donation to the school, so the hard drive was removed and destroyed.
I found a hard drive for it, and hooked it in and it seems to be running fine. However no matter what I do, it will not boot from the disc drive. I have tried holding "C" while it's booting, and the screen goes white for a little while, and then it switches to the flashing Finder icon and question mark. I have also tried the Startup Manager, but it doesn't show that there are any discs whatsoever. I looked around and found that the Open Firemware may help. But I can't get into it using the CommandShift+OF command. In fact, the only time i got into it, was when I mashed a bunch of keys at once, and it came up. But that hasn't worked again.
Also (I dont know if this matters) but when I press the Power button, I don't hear that ever so wonderful, startup sound. And Ive tried to boot from the internal disc drive, and an external Sony drive.

The Mirrored Drive Doors G4 models (and possibly the quicksilver 2002 models) are unable to boot OS 9 from ANY "Full Retail" CD. These Macs came out after the last versions of "Full Retail" 9.2.1 were issued, and if you bought one of these advanced G4s new, it came with a set of discs that contained a customized 9.2.1, so no new "Full Retail" OS 9 CDs were needed.
If you could post the CPU speed (check the label on the back), readers can figure out exactly which Mac you have and determine how much trouble you are in.
Can you get a Mac OS X 10.2 or 10.3 "Full Retail" CD from the school? They should have trunks full, and think of them as antiques.

  • K7N2G Beeps when booting for first time

I purshased the K7N2G series motherboard, and after connecting everything when I boot it beeps for about 1 and 1/2 seconds straight then stops, then a few seconds later it does it again.  It does this until I power it off.  A few times I was able to get into the BIOS, where the only things I set were the boot order, disabled the floppy controller, and changed the FSB to 133Mhz.  But nonetheless, it did this before I got into the BIOS the first time.  I have the following items attached to it:
AMD 2200 w/ fan(which I made sure was working correctly when I booted)
    256MB DDR333 memory(installed in slot 1)
40GB brand new unpartitioned IBM hard drive
    HP 4x CDRW drive
Hard drive is set as master and plugged into the middle of the cable, and cdrom is slave at the end both connected to IDE 1.  I realize this isnt the best way to have them hooked up but its only like that for convenience purposes now.  Any help on this would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks.

  • I want to know how Mozilla FireFox knew all of my bookmarks, etc from my laptop when I installed it for the first time on my desktop.

What sort of tools are you using to track me? How did you know it was me? My iCloud account? My iTunes account?

If your stolen laptop continues to Sync with Mozilla's servers, you might have access to information about some of the browsing activity on that laptop, such as browsing history, new bookmarks, and new saved passwords. However, I suspect that iCloud is a more powerful tracking tool than Firefox Sync.
For your security on your new PC, you probably should create a new Firefox profile. One way to do this with minimal transitional pain is the use the Reset feature. This duplicates certain key data from your active settings folder into a new one, bypassing some add-ons and custom settings.
More information in this article: [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]].
Do not sync your ''new'' profile with your ''old'' Sync account.
To access your old profile for any purposes, such as to delete any saved passwords or see whether you get any new data, you can switch back and forth using Firefox's Profile Manager. This article describes how to start Firefox in the profile manager. I do not recommend removing anything until you are 110% certain that you will never need any of that profile's data in the future. [[Use the Profile Manager to create and remove Firefox profiles]].

  • Start PO workflow after approved from first level

    Hi Guys,
I have i typical requirement i my knowledge its not possible.
What exactly has happened is that after upgrade BUS2012 event linkage was not active and there where no workflow got triggered for PO approval
But the line manager have gone and approved the POu2019s from ME29N now for the next level they are asking to send the workflow as we have activated the linkage.
Any idea how can we start the workflow from that point again.
    Atul

    Hi Atul,
In production how many workflow's are there like this?
Its small amount of workflow's then you can again manually trigger the workflow using SWUE[You should pass the object key as purchase order number] and Complete the first level of workflow.
So it will be go for Second level of Approval.
If you have large amount of workflows that are already Triggered in production, then you have to discuss with your client about the issue.
    Thanks,
    Viji.

  • Mac mini doesn't boot the first time i turn it on

    hello,
i have a strange problem with my mac mini and was wondering if anyone had heard of it before.
when i turn on mac mac, the light comes on and i hear drive noise, but no chime. no video is sent to the display (the monitor flashes "no signal"). however, if i wait for 5 or 10 minutes, turn it off by holding down the power button and then turn it straight back on it again, it starts up as usual (with chime).
could this be a software problem or is it more likely a glitch in the hardware?
    mac mini, 1.66ghz intel
    mac os x 10.4.11
    cheers,
    jack.

That doesn't sound like a software/OS problem, because MacOS doesn't begin to load until after the initial startup, including the chime and the grey screen with Apple logo. Since you don't get the chime or display, it sounds like the system has a hardware problem, or perhaps an issue with PRAM.
As a first step I would reset PRAM as follows:
    -Shut down the computer.
-Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in the next step but one.
    -Turn on the computer.
-Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
-Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    -Release the keys.

    Hi,
I am sure you might have followed these steps. However, Could you please verify whether you had migrated the code by following the steps as mentioned in the docs posted below:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E13154_01/bpm/docs65/upgradeguide/index.html
It seems like the properties are causing some issues. the properties files have been upgraded from .properties to .xml files in OBPM.
    Hope this helps

There's a number of potential problems here, and they may not necessarily be at your end.
First of all, it should be clear that CMYK is not so much a generic "image mode" as it is a description of specific press conditions. If you produce final CMYK, you must have the right profile. Don't use Image > Mode, use Convert to Profile.
Given that, I would question anyone who doesn't accept Adobe RGB photographs for a magazine article, because it implies a process that isn't properly color managed and generally not up to date. A standard workflow today would use InDesign, where images are normally placed in their original RGB space whatever that is. Then the conversion to final output CMYK is done as the last step, when producing a press-ready PDF from InDesign.
It helps tremendously if you know that final CMYK, because then you can proof to that so your file survives the CMYK conversion with the least possible damage (we're talking gamut clipping here; not general color shifts). But it's not absolutely required, which is why this workflow is relaitively safe.
Third, CMYK jpeg is in itself risky, because many jpeg decoders (in some software) don't have proper CMYK support. The result can be weird colors. This could well be the problem here, because it sounds as if your client uses a non-standard workflow.
So what to do? I would send two files. One sRGB as reference, which is guaranteed to come through correctly. Then find a way to send TIFF for the CMYK version if they insist, or ask them to try opening it in different software. Of course you should have a calibrated and profiled display, but I agree that's probably not the immediate problem here. There's no particular reason a CMYK file should come back with twisted colors if it's opened and processed in properly color managed software.

  • When starting Lightroom 5.6 for the first time I get the error message "AgPathUtils.getStandardFilePath: can't create directory at: /Users/.../Pictures" when trying to import pictures

Today I installed Lightroom 5.6 on Mac OS 10.9.4. Photoshop Elements 11 is also installed on this computer. This Lightroom Version is the 30 day test version. My Picture folder is linked to a secondary hdd, but this worked fine with any other program so far. This error keeps me from editing / opening pictures. Any help is appreciated.

I replaced the symlink with a folder named "Pictures" and it actually worked. At least a new menu shows up. BTW Photoshop Elements does not complain.

  • Disk space is full and I need to move and back up some movies to clear up space--suggestions?  I have a time capsule, but am afraid that if I delete the files from my laptop, they will subsequently be deleted from the time capsule.

I also don't want to have a single copy of the movies.  Is buying an external hard drive for my movie files the only option?  Can I then use the time capsule to back-up the G Drive?
    Trish

You can't depend on a Time Machine backup keeping copies of files that you've deleted from your Mac.  For one thing, those would be the only place those files were kept.  If the disk in the Time Capsule fails, you'd have lost them entirely.  For another thing, Time Machine will eventually delete those files.  See item 20 of Time Machine FAQs.
A locally-connected external disk would be the best place to move those movies.

  • Grub fail to boot the first time

    Hello
I spent the past 2 days trying without success to install my archlinux. I am out of ideas so I come here for advise.
Grub doesn't seem to be able to load my LVM partions.
Before you ask, yes, I have the dm_mod in the module list and the lvm2 in the hook list. Yes I regenerated the image.
Here is my /boot/grub/grub.cfg (Which is loaded! Grub load correctly the config, load the initrd and everything!, the isssue comes after the menuentries)
    insmod gzip
    insmod part_gpt
    insmod lvm
    insmod ext2
    set root=(lvm/lv1-boot)
    linux /vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/lv1/root ro
    initrd /initramfs-linux.img
I tried to use /dev/mapper/lv1-root, it does just the same.
/etc/fstab have been generated by genfstab.
    # UUID=xxxxxx
/dev/mapper/lv1-root / ext4 ro #Tried also with rw and default optiions...
    # UUID=xxxxxx

It propose me to enter recovery mode or to continue and if I continue, it works fine!!! But as it is a remote server, this happen way before the network initialization so I can't let it be
I must have missed something setting up grub. But what?
As I said, I am out of ideas . Does someone would have any?
    Regards,
    EDIT: additionnal infos:
    GRUB2
    GPT
    /dev/sda1 -> bios
    /dev/sda2 -> Linux LVM
    pv /dev/sda2
    vg lv1 /dev/sda2
    lv:
    root -> ext4 (I tried ext3... no luck)
    boot -> ext2 (I tried ext3 and ext4... no luck)
    swap -> swap (unused)
    Install via bootstrap (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Install_from_Existing_Linux Method1)
    EDIT2:
I tried with MBR instead of GPT, exact same issue
I tried to gensftab with UUIDs instead, changes nothings

In the example on the wiki, there are no parentheses around the lvm/lv1-boot:
    # (0) Arch Linux
    menuentry "Arch Linux" {
    insmod lvm
    set root=lvm/VolumeGroup-lv_boot
    # you can only set following two lines
    linux /vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/mapper/VolumeGroup-root ro
    initrd /initramfs-linux.img
Note: I don't know that the wiki is correct. I'm just noting the disparity.

  • W541: Cannot boot from USB created with Windows 8 create recovery drive

Hello, I have just bought a W541, and want to install the supplied Windows 8 on an m.2 SSD.I created the recovery drive on a USB following the instructions in the User Manual, but the recover image procedure under Advanced Options cannot find the USB.During the re-image step, it fails to find a drive with a valid image.I've confirmed using the command window available under the Advanced Options that the USB is mounted Searching these forums, I found the following, which describes a similar problem for a T540:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-W-Series-Laptops/Lenovo-W540-won-t-boot-from-USB-flash-drive-ThinkPad/m-p/1500902#M39097 This implies that the USB should first be formatted with FAT32 before use, which cannot work, since FAT32 only has a maximum 4 GB  partition, whereas when copied to the USB, the Windows 8 recovery drive occupies nearly 10 GB. Is it possible to specify the boot order from insde the BIOS? I could only find an entry under Security about UEFI boot enabling, nothing about the boot order. Can anyone help?Paul

Hello Z, thanks for the reply. I tried another USB drive, and created a recovery drive, as before. This time it was able to detect the presence of the drive when I tapped on the Enter key when starting up, followed by the F12 key.  However, there are still problems when I clicked through the options:Choose the languageChoose your keyboard layoutTroubleshootAdvanced optionsSystem Image Recovery At this point I am offered the option Windows 8.1.When I select this, it indicates it is scanning for system disks, and then displays the the pop-up window "Re-image your computer": "Windows cannot find a system image on this computer" Why does this happen if it detected that there was a Windows 8.1 installation on the USB? I've spent a whole day now on this. Luckily, if I can't solve it, the machine is new and I can send it back to Lenovo, and ask to have it re-imaged with the downgrade option to Windows 7.
